- A cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" by Tim Eilers. Featuring the voice of poet Miles Ciletti.
One need never have to go out if you have a holographic room and electric friends to come and visit. The room can be any place, any time. Your electric friend can wear any face. But what to do when your friend malfunctions and wanders off? The holograms shatter and fade away as a digital pimp waits on the street. Smoking a cigarette.
Originally released on the album Replicas. Some of the images in the video were lifted from various Gary Numan albums. The rest of the images and animation were generated in After Effects. Recorded and animated in Northridge, California March 2011.
Gary is the reason I saved and bought a moog in JrHS 1979.
Hes always been a great inspiration to me and my love of his music.❤❤❤❤

Sitting with a few beers as all real scots do working my way through all your covers of a man I consider an absolute legend , in case your worried Tim this is'nt stalking mate it's adoration I keep thinking I'll eventually come across one of your covers thats not quite as good as the original but so far no luck. Big shout out to my After Effects teacher Ben Bardens (youtube channel bardensplace) and the school Studio Arts in Los Angeles. Ben made this program really interesting to learn and the school has a top notch environment. Couldn't recommend it more.
fantastic job on this. can't be easy to cover a song that's perfect in its simplicity by adding more elements to it, yet this version works so well

Fantastic cover, really great songs on your channel. Unlike a lot of people who cover Numan songs, although good covers in their own right, they never quite capture that same essence of the original Gary Numan songs, but you come really, really close.
These are wonderful Tim, you really understand what makes Numan's songs so great. and convey this superbly through your own 'take' on them. The visuals are wonderful too. I love the 'vs' tracks too.

I believe Tubeway's Top Of The Pops appearance in 1979 was shown in the firtst series of a UK TV comedy panel show called Never Mind The Buzzcocks, asking guests what Numan's lyrics were to the song. You've done a great job in helping us all out with it!
EXCELLENT!! You captured the meaning and underlying darkness of One of Garys Finest pieces. Love The Guitar textures and combination of drum sounds You used! Perfect Programming And sound choices! The spoken parts are awesome, mechanical and Inhuman. The video is Perfect. What's That red plane trail footage from? Another Great one Tim! :D

I don't like this as much as your other work. (It's still in my favorites though, and still one of the best AFE covers I've heard.)
The problem for me, is that while you have an excellent voice, it doesn't sound right on AFE. The only male cover of AFE where the vocals have worked for me, is the two guys with the ukulele. (And that would be because the style is so un-Numan) (I would love to hear Fiona Bates singing it)
The spoken part really worked well though, and the music is excellent
Eilers does Numan better than Numan. That's not to say Gary couldn't do as well; but it's hard to see how really.
im not suggesting that musicions shouldnt cover numan but i do suggest that at least make it different and credible, i get it that tribute bands do original sounding sets, fans love his past music but if you are an original artist you do you own thing and not just carbon copy it, i struggle with people who try to impersonate him and his style it bothers me, i respect people who use his music to develope it into something we havnt already heard a thousand times, i mean no disrespect it its just my opinion, peace and long live Numan.

In retrospect I agree. I could have done so much better but live and learn.
Vocals are flat really it's like a bad karaoke, I'm a numan fan have been from the start this is just sad, with respect there's only one numan and plenty of clones but please c'mon leave it alone take what you have learnt from numan and do your own thing.
Since I've been doing these covers I've had a lot of people share their cover versions with me. I think all the musical efforts, good and bad, come from a place of sincere appreciation for Numan and his music. There is only one Gary Numan and he is the bomb, but to suggest that musicians should not be covering him is a little strange. Reznor, Manson, Foo Fighters and many more have covered Numan. I don't like all the versions but I do like hearing interpretations of his music as do many others. As for my vocals, your criticism is fair. Not my favorite performance. Numan really is the only person that can sing this song worth a damn. I still had great fun doing it and it was totally worthwhile. Cheers.
