I've gone from being a teenager to a 60 year old man in the time between the song coming out and seeing this video. Ah, how the world has changed beyond all recognition since then. This takes me back to the good old days.
King of synthpop, godfather of techno, foundational in the creation of hiphop. Pure legend. Been a fan since 1978. Seen him perform across decades. If I had a dollar for all the time people told me he was a one-hit wonder Bowie knock-off I'd be a gd gazillionaire. They were so wrong. His influence on modern music is nothing short of staggering.
Well stated and spot on. This is a gawd damned masterpiece. Numan is one of the most criminally over looked artists of all time but those of us who get it have gotten it since the 80's ...I was 10 years old when this iconic masterpiece was released and thanks to my older brother it changed my musical listening landscape forever.
Gary Numan is music, which hip-hop isn't, imho. But, there should be a special wing for Bowie and Numan. I put Bjork in there just because they all were so original and created new music boundaries.
@@mjp96He's been through some tough times and has emerged much more at ease with himself and his past, I think. I'm off to see him tomorrow night and I can't wait.
This is the first time in years iv'e heard Gary do the old 'Woh Woh!' bit ever since the re-imagined version he just done the whisper thing, was sooo damn good to hear that old bit back in just like the 1979-95 versions
Was just thinking the same thing on your latter point. Went back to listen to the original (to make sure I wasn't talking out of my rear end about one particular lyric in the song), and his voice IS better. How many singers can you say that about 30...40 years after they began.
Thing remains this. I am 64. I stand American. There is only a couple of weeks difference in age between Gary and I. We are losing our greatest artists all the time.
The first time I saw this on television Gary Numan (Tubeway Army) with Are Friends Electric? I knew immediately, that's it, that's my music. Best song never made, heard it more than 1000 times and I still have that kick of fun, youthful, fresh and new wave. Gary Numan for fever in my heart.
40 years ago the father of synth pop was killing it with Tubeway Army, now the grandfather of synth is still killing it. Hard to believe it's been over forty years since I first heard Tubeway Army on Space radio. Amazing Gary and thank you!
A little bit of sweet sublime Gary Numan right on time He is just the same as me On a different planet we Must get out my violin Been a while create a din Oh my goodness this is loud Ramp it up now Gary's proud What a brilliant star creation Sings it loud for all the nation Keep on going kick some ass Reaps my soul a heaven's pass Makes me smile it's rockin' gold Thankyou Gary this is BOLD ⭐️
This was fantastic! The orchestra and the conductor were all so into it and I am sure that brought so much to the event. Gary looks like he is having such a blast too. So well done!
Thank you for sharing. When the original single came out I had been on exercise on Dartmoor with the TA for 2 weeks. It was robotic, and sounded the way I felt. I fell in love with this tune and this version has just caught up with me on UA-cam...
love it when a band plays a well loved song with a different intro that suddenly segues into something iconic. King Crimsons live 21st Century Schizoid man with building notes then sudden descent into the riff epitomises it.
I love the small switch in lyrics towards the end..."you see THIS means everything to me." And all the accompaniment drops. That's why you go see live music. As much as this song was great when first recorded 45 years ago (damn...btw...lol), this small lyrical shift popped the crowd like mad. And, to be honest, me too hearing it on this UA-cam!
When I was a teenager I loved this song and I love it still ;-). It breathes from the Mini Moog sound. When I was in Scotland 1981 I bought "Replicas" the LP. Are Friends electric and Down in the park are so great.....
I’m 25 and this is my favourite song of all time. Think it was because ‘Freak Like Me’ by Sugababes, which samples ‘Freak Like Me’, was out when I was a kid. I discovered this only in 2012 and haven’t stopped listening since!
As a long time prog rocker I didn't really follow Gary Numan. By chance I came upon the Brixton concert and it blew me away. The songs evolved over time and live versions of Metal and Are Friends just blew me away. My name is Ruin. Wow. So have gone back over his many albums and I regret what I missed out on. Bravo
This is simply excellent, sound fantastic in the car, wide open heavy hitting and crystal clear, a true treat for an audiophile like myself. And when I’m home the neighbours gets to enjoy this gem too
Wow totally epic, takes me back to his early days I loved it then but to hear this is unreal, gave me goosebumps. Gary Numan the gift that keeps on giving:)

It annoys me when they do things about 80's music but completely overlook the one true genius from that era.
