I am on my second EV. My wife is on her second EV. We have solar panels and batteries. We live in Sweden. We are not rich. We drive almost for free. We are never going back.
Why did you get rid of your first EV? Did you drive it long enough for it to offset it's environmental impact of mining the minerals or did you just create more waste?
@@ttkddry The car would have been sold onto another driver. There would have been no more impact. Note also the environmental impact of oil spills, oil drilling and oil refineries (which by the way, run on electricity)

@@JacktheRipper-xo3wo The reality is these pure ICE vehicles are old surplus thats stranded in warehouses for many months. They sold at a loss especially in China. Its why legacy auto makers go full pivot in hybrids. Its recommended to not buy new ICE vehicles this year and in near future

I regret buying my EV in 2016 so much, I’m still driving it in 2024 with a smile on my face every time I put my foot down on the accelerator.😂
Same here. I bought my Hyundai diesel in 2016 and am still very happy with it 8 years later, and will still be happy driving it 8 years from now.

This is so true. I have friends who absolutely hate EVs and get their back up if they are even mentioned. After a bit of conversation and questioning I realize they are parroting much of the rubbish they hear from the Murdoch media. Sky News in Australia is especially to blame.

That's a great point, Sendu. It's exactly the same with politics today - it comes down to which channel one watches etc to get their news. In the US, we used to have something called "The Fairness Doctrine" that made all the news radio stations and tv channels fairly and accurately report the news. Until 1987 when Ronald Reagan and the GOP/Republicans destroyed it.
When I hear the anti EV claims, I can tell where they came from.

I just traded in my 20 year old Suzuki Liana, for a 4 year old WV e-up. The thing is tiny, drives very nicely, costs nearly nothing to charge and gets me about 200-220 km on average at around 80% charge I would say. I have to admit I have found my love for just enjoying driving again after being very tired of having an old car with so many issues.
The silence of the car is one of the huge benefits, it is very nice to just float around the streets while enjoying some good podcasts or music.
The realization I can just stop and idle the car with no ill effects to anyone around me is such a nice bonus. I don't believe anyone actually enjoys breathing in exhaust fumes, or gasoline fumes when re-filling your car.
The e-up has none of the fancy things the new cars have, it has a steering wheel, a shift stick to handle your drive mode and a bluetooth setup. Thats it. It is just a car from the early 2000 era with an electrical drivetrain replacement and it still feels this good to drive. I think it is a great stepping stone EV for someone in my position going from an old failing ICE vehicle, but who is limited to a normal sized bank account. 😅
Looking forward to the next generation of cheaper simpler EVs, which I truly hope is coming soon.
I’ve owned my 2014 E-Up! for 5 years, it’s a great car. I totally agree with you about its design. Such a pity that VW didn’t repeat some of the simplicity in its ID range of cars.
I had a very close look at the Skoda equivalent - I think it was called a City Go. A fine little car and I don't understand why it was not developed further.
Genie is out of the bottle. No matter how hard they try to slow down EV adoption the ice industry is still going to be screwed.

My MG4 is a great car it runs off my roof in summer and cheap midnight electricity in winter. The legacy car makers and oil companies are pumping out propaganda galore. It’s amazing how much this must be costing them.

I found an old magazine from 1924 where they openly advertised cigarettes as "health products".
“In theory, you can make your own energy with solar, you can power your car, you can make the majority of the energy for your house.” It’s not theory. I have 36 solar panels, a Tesla 14.4 kw system. Last year, I made 22,000 kwh of energy. My model S used 9,000 kwh to travel 25,000 miles. My house used 10,000 kwh for all of its needs. At the end of the year, I got a $700 credit towards my next year’s electricity bill. So even with the $30 monthly connection fee to the grid and taxes associated with moving large amount of energy to the grid during the day and then moving it back to my car at night, I have paid zero dollars to the power company (SoCal Edison) in the last two years. And I have paid zero dollars in gasoline costs. It’s not a theory, it is a reality. My Tesla solar system cost $33,500. After federal tax rebate, it was $23,000. I was previously paying $2,500 per year for electricity and $4,000 per year for gasoline.
You really have been ripped off paying $33,500 for a solar systtem. I suppose you live in the US where there is little choice. On the plus side you must live somewhere where the sun shines a lot, especially in winter. Here in the UK I made 4,300 kwh from a system conttaining 16 250 watt solar panels. That is plenty in the summer but not in the depths of winter when I might make just a few kwh per day but use up to 50kwh per day running my ground source heat pump.

This is the age of lies. Business, government, news media, and social networking sites. The proof is in looking with your own eyes, and doing your own math. When I decided on buying my EV I looked at range, figured by current total ICE costs, estimated savings and then purchased. I was not disappointed because I knew what the truth was, since I knew how often the oil industry paid off experts I didn't listen to them. Modern consumers don't seem willing to look at the data, or the bias of the media.

math is math. all people need to do is find out what works for them.
The science supporting anthropogenic climate change is absurdly bad. The Vostok ice core samples proved that during low levels of atmospheric carbon global temperatures were even warmer 100K years ago than they are today. Add to that the fact that, since plants prefer warmer weather, higher CO2 promotes more robust agriculture, thus lower C02 levels would logically reduce the global food supply.
Having said all that, the reason to prefer electric cars is twofold. First, because it reduces actual pollutants that cause respiratory and heart disease, especially in large cities. And second, because the cost of operating an EV is dramatically lower due to fuel, maintenance, and repair savings, such that even an upfront premium (if there is one) will be recovered over a period of between 3 to 5 years.
The point that Europe and US are raising tariffs on EV shows they are a threat to existing car companies
not really, nz was one of the first to stop tax rebates and charge evs per mile, they have no car industry to protect, we do operate a free market with no subsidies but the last govt had to have the greens on board to govern and they wanted subsidies for evs, as soon as we changed govt the new govt leveled the playing field and ev sales dried up
It’s not the EVs, they are secondary. China is waging industrial warfare on Europe and the US. They are trying to smash industry in those countries, disrupt the labour market, raise the value of the Chinese Yuan and fill the space with their cheap throwaway products.

There should be a levy on all ICE vehicles to pay for the current environmental damage they are doing through CO, NOx and particulate emissions and future damage to the climate through CO2 emissions. NZ is fortunate in that a very high proportion of its electricity comes from renewables. This reacttionary government will be cursed by future generations.

Battery technologies are in the main being developed by battery companies, not car manufactturers. This means that the latest batteries will be available to all manufacturers. Thatt is even the case with Tesla which uses the likes of CATL etc.

Legacy car brand have been sleeping in the past two decades. Years ago German car brands laughed at hybrid technology and just added more gears to their gearboxes and added turbochargers to their engines. Now they are surpassed by Tesla and Chinese industry. Oil companies keep on drilling for oil because the fail in changing their thinking. These legacy companies are digging their own graves with huge consequences for themselves, economy and social stability (unemployment). Their policy is irresponsible
Sadly governments will just bail them out on its own citizen money. And after the bail out they will just buy out competition besides Tesla and chinese companies. Stealing from struggling EV startups technology.

Actually, a lot of these oil companies are hedging their bets and buying into charging infrastructure, and The Saudi government fund put billions into EV manufacturer Lucid. BTW, remember years ago when Elon Musk got in trouble for saying Tesla was going to be bought out, and go private. It was the Saudi's that were wanting to buy Tesla. Fortunately, it didn't happen.
@@JacktheRipper-xo3wo completely false. The mining for minerals for batteries is in no way "friendly" to the environment but its no Deepwater Horizon or Exxon Valdez oil spill. Most of these "Devistating" battery mines have nothing to do with EV supplies, like the child labour used in Cobalt, that Cobalt is used in petroleum refineries not EVs!

Unfortunately this disruption is too real to simply deceive the consumers away from the advantages of change. @@BrisbaneTeslaGuy Why? Tesla is really ripping you off charging of the order of $1000 per kwh when battery prices are now around $50 per kwh. You van buy an EV with an 80kwh battery for £40,000. That is £500 per kwh and you get a car attached to the battery for good measure. There are plenty of better cheaper altternattives to Tesla powerwalls.
@@rogerphelps9939 to be fair I got mine 18 months ago so you are sort of right but the issue is in Australia the other battery products are not as safe , as good quality long lasting have the ability to latch into a VPP the way the Powerwall does. I’ve saved a small fortune so far in Australia. We have some of the highest electricity cost In The world. Ultimately I made the right decision. Also as I joined the Tesla vpp the too my warranty to 20 years from 10 years so I’m happy.

As the Chinese begin to take over the international market for EVs the vested interests (oil and legacy car makers), will have to struggle to maintain their positions. Not only will the prices of EVs come down but China will be more involved in helping to develop the charging infrastructure as well. Slowly, the pieces are starting to come together. Battery technology in particular is advancing with each year, getting cheaper and more reliable. The old ICE technology is fading. Tariffs and propaganda can slow the transition, but once the prices of EVs match or beat gas guzzlers and fears dissipate the shift will accelerate. One thing is clear, the future is with EVs, it's just a matter of time.
It's no coincidence that Communist China (and places like Norway and California) is the biggest 'market' for EVs, because there is no such thing as a free market for EVs, they (and the chargers) inherently cost more to build than anyone is willing to pay for them- and so will always cost the taxpayer a fortune. Let China own that albatross if they want, (they've already sunk hundreds of billions of state money into it) let other's actually make money selling cars people actually want.
EV market is 7% in the US, (down from 8% last year), if we are freed from the mandates, which is looking increasingly likely, it's going to shrink even faster.
@@user-jb2om7cm8m Like it or not, the Chinese are way ahead of everyone else in the EV space. They subsidized their EV manufacturers early on and were able to bring down prices so that most of their EVs are at or better in price than ICE vehicles. They are also ahead in battery technology. CATL and BYD are producing denser and cheaper batteries with each iteration. Tariffs in the US and Europe will save the legacy automakers for now, but the Chinese have almost no competition in the rest of the world. We are beginning to see more Chinese cars, EVs, and ICE in Latin America and Asia. Prices and quality are equal to or better than US or European cars.
Moreover, Chinese companies are setting up plants in Mexico that will someday supply both the US and Latin America with EVs. Regardless of what you might think of their government, their cars are stiff competition for Europe and America. It remains to be seen if the legacy automakers can catch up.
@@ferfromla Well yes, they're way 'ahead' in terms of public money thrown at EVs, nearly half a TRILLION by some estimates, one reason their economy is looking so shaky.
In terms of being able to produce competitive IC cars that people want in the US- they are way behind. IC technology is a lot more complex than wiring up some batteries to an electric motor- anyone can do that- but nobody can make a profit doing it. I'm happy to have China take the hit on EVs if they want it.
@@user-jb2om7cm8m The Chinese are very competitive and are marketing all over the world. Reviewers worldwide, including in the US, have uniformly concluded that Chinese cars are equal to or, in some cases, better than what the legacy car makers offer. If BYD, Geely, and the like were not tough competition, tariffs would not be needed here or in Europe. We do subsidies, too, through tax breaks and bailouts. Anyone who does not take Chinese companies seriously is making a big mistake. The legacy car companies have been given a reprieve for the time being with 100% tariffs. But the rest of the world is open for business and will buy Chinese cars.
@@ferfromla Sure, but again primarily in the EV market only, which is a pretty small niche with an uncertain future in the US. I agree we don't need tariffs- and without looming mandates for EVs, we wouldn't have to worry about China dominating that subsidy driven market.
The most popular auto in the US is the IC powered Ford F150. (Ford didn't take the 'bailout' which was only a loan anyway) I don't see China competing much in that market.

Regarding that 'study' claiming that EV owners are going back to ICE, there are some huge red flags.
1. None of the reports link to the actual study.
2. If you go to the McKinsey website, there doesn't appear to be a report. I suspect it is buried deep inside something on a different topic.
3. Reporting of this study is all over the place. Some reporting that it applies to US EV owners. I've seen the same claim about Australian EV owners. I've seen a global figure of 29% cited. The reporting is all over the place.

@@rogerphelps9939 I looked it up, the number applies to the US. The study was of several countries, but that number applied to the US, not the world. US is a bit weird with EVs. Americans are more likely to do long distances as the norm compared to Europe and the charging network is one of the worst in the western world in many areas. It makes some sense that there will be more negative experiences there than in Europe.
On 43k miles of mostly road trips in my Tesla I have not had issues charging.
Must be non Tesla owners.

It is laughably obvious in light of the greatly accelerating adoption of EV's, battery storage and green energy production, Big Oil and Legacy Big Auto is getting increasingly desperate. Thus, the fear-mongering will continue to increase and the lies become bigger. But take heart, much like the powerful cigarette industry, the public will continue to be more educated and accepting of EV's. I must say though, I didn't think the fossil fuel goofs would get so outrageous as to tell such a whopper that diesel fumes are suppressing methane!
Can someone please get a professor of chemistry to show that diesel fumes (nitrogen dioxide) suppresses methane.
Some people are afraid to test drive any EV for fear of what they have heard from other EV owners that they will never go back to an ice vehicle and be a slave to the oil companies, and the high cost of vehicle maintenance. Not everyone can spot the many EVs that are out there unless they are a Tesla, but there are more and more from all manufacturers on the road including an increasing number of new Teslas, the snowball is beginning to gather speed and size.
It appears that a lot of American ice car owners treat EVs as a bit of a cult.. but if they get a chance to drive one many discover that in fact is a better driving experience in most not every case
I just moved from Canada to China. The air quality and quietness on the road sides is mind boggling compared to even downtown Vancouver. I just bought my first EV and have no intention of going back to IC cars.
Air quality surprises me. China is ranked as having the 13th worst air quality in the world. Canada is way down in 93rd position.
@@davidbrayshaw3529 I've been visiting China now and again since the 1980's. The air quality was horrendous even as back as the last Olympics in Beijing. However, what struck me most was the difference in the last 2 years. I was in Hong Kong last week and the heat from the car and bus engines, exhaust pollution and noise was very uncomfortable in this Summer heat.
Of course, anti EV videos popping up on my homepage even if I never searched for them. I flag these videos as "not interested" like 5x and they still show....😂
It will be amusing to see these fossil fuel interests trying, and then spectacularly failing, to stop the electrification revolution. We have a front row seat in Australia where we are about to be inundated by a wave of ever more excellent and affordable Chinese EVs.

Battery round trip efficiency is already around 90% so any improvements really are marginal.
What amazes me more is that we are less informed today than 20 years ago, and every news I hear or see I have to fact check it in several sources until I can make an opinion. Basically we went backwards in what respect information.
I did a forty miles drive this week in my Kia EV, total cost of the fuel used charging at the cheap night rate, 60 pence
I think we should not bang on too much about how cheap EV motoring is because it is an artificial situation. Petrol and diesel are rightly taxed far more heavily than electricity, not heavily enough in my view. Anyway this tax is a very important revenue stream for the government. As EVs become an ever larger proportion of the number of cars on the road this revenue stream will decrease and will have to be replaced by somehing else. In my view there will be an annual charge based on mileage and the weight/size of the car. This avoids taxing electricity per se because it has many uses besides charging EVs that do not warrant increased taxation. The mileage is already recorded at the annual MOT and it would be straightforward to extend it to tthe first two years when no MOT is required. Eventually EV mileage charging will cost about the same as ICE fuel tax costs today but I would hope that by then the tax on ICEs will be punittive.

Wrong. There are plenty of alternatives at least as good as if not beter than what Tesla has to offer, unless of course, you live in Nortth America where your choice is extremely limited.

I've been driving a Model X for 5 years, never going back to an ICE vehicle.
BYD: Sold 341,658 NEVs in June 2024 - and already toppled its December 2023 sales of 341,043.
This will increase massively due to BYD giving customers the option to first try BEVs but to also be secure with the ICE side while doing so. This way it lies in the customers hands what drivetrain will be used. I am pretty sure that most will instantly see the benefit of the BEV part and choose a full BEV next time...after they sell the PHEV prematurely so other customers can make the same experience...only a bit cheaper than the original customer. Giving the customer the choice and being fully transparent is way way more relevant than advertising.
Thank you! I don't think you focus on it too much. Legacy auto manufactures are behind. Battery manufacturing plants are being built in the U.S. and legacy manufacturers are using tactics like this to stall for time.
ICEs will be providing a free horse and cart soon with every dinasaur purchase as a way of reducing CO2.....all free advertising for EVs cause you won't need grass.....
Infrared light reflects off pollution chemicals, so it will get worse. That doesn't mean its rite to continue polluting, there are many aerosol's that we can use if needed to offset the effects. including water vapor.

Not the main driver like CO2 but it does act as a multiplier in that we get more of it as the atmosphere & oceans heat up due to CC.
But yeah i suppose we could emit other aerosols to try and combat methane emissions, but I'd rather see methane(Natural gas) go the way of the Dodo along with all the other fossil fuels, then maybe we can worry about methane emissions from natural sources, like rotting vegetation, thawing permafrost and volcanic eruptions.

So as we top burning coal and gas the temperature will initially get worse not better. The underlying cause of climate change is still caused by co2 & methane. Water vapor at the earths surface may trap heat? But clouds of water vaper block heat we all feel it on a cloudy day.
I don't feel like its a impossible problem anymore, theres so many things we can do, just changing farming practices alone can draw massive amount of carbon. The first step to fixing things is to stop breaking them first though.

Tesla managed to at least get into the top 10 best sellers for June, but only by the usual tactic of holding back sales and bunching them into one month. For example, about 17.6% of cars sold this year were sold in June, but 29.3% of all Tesla were sold in June. Of all the Tesla registered in June, only 4 weren't models Y or 3

My ev has saved me a TON of money I used to spend on gas and maintenance. There’s no free lunch in technology. Upsides and downsides to everything. But if you weigh the pros and cons evenly, EV’s are better at this point, especially financially.
I’ve driven three Tesla’s now, plus a BYD and an MG EV. Two were rentals, the others were friends and family. I was stunned at how bland the interior was in the Tesla’s and the poor quality of the materials, seats, plastics, etc. The BYD and MG were just plain rubbish. The Tesla’s (US builds) were clearly far superior to the others and much better to drive but having said that, I still found the driving experience to be disappointing. I was expecting more for so much money. And don’t get me started on that bloody great screen that controls everything…

For me the only problem is the cost EV is 20k more so for me thats 10 years of my fuel cost. Its just not economical but if you drive a lot and can charge at home its not bad. It depends how you use your car if its worth it.

I drove my first tesla last week. I used fsd 12.3.6 from san diego to los angeles with NO intervention. I was blown away! Once i got back in my ford exploror, it was like driving a dinosaur. Im a tesla believer!

Tariffs will save the US auto industry when it comes to domestic sales but for how long is the question.
For those of us who can remember the U.S. tried tariffs before and it failed. In early 80’s Reagan imposed huge tariffs on Japanese cars to protect the U.S. car industry. By 1988 Georgetown Toyota was one on the many Japanese auto players to setup plants in the USA and they just celebrated their ninth version of the Camry. The Chinese will do the same to penetrate the U.S. market. BYD is setting up a plant in Mexico and will eventually setup in the U.S. They already have a bus plant in California. Other Chinese auto makers will follow. Unfortunately Canada follows the U.S. and hence they too will be 5 years behind Europe and the rest of Western countries in EV adoption. I live in Alberta and own an IONIQ 5 as a retired oil and gas consultant. Here it’s very political but folks need to ignore the politics and discover what a great driving experience it is own an EV.
Make EVs better and cheaper and they will sell themselves. The push back is only going to get worse as EV sales increase, eventually the tipping point of public sentiment will shift in favour of EVs till then hater’s gonna hate best way to piss em off is go electric 😂👍
90% of people couldn't care less if their car was fuelled by petrol, diesel, electric or unicorn farts. It all comes down to the hip pocket, for most car buyers. The biggest car segment in the world is small cheap hatchbacks and small SUV's. Notice the word "cheap". When EV's can break into that market, you won't have to bother to advertise them.

With bugger all drive through chargers how are you going to convert people who tow to EV when they find out they have to unhitch to charge? I love my new model 3 And want to get rid of our Kluger for a model y, but that’s not going to happen with the idiotic rollout of the current chargers. Think of the millions of caravans, boats, jetskis and trailers.
One step at a time eh Peter. The rollout of chargers is still in the early stages and charging cars towing trailers is being addressed, albeit slowly but they do exist.
Absolutely. The one thing that the petrol and diesel fuel industry got right is the placement of the pumps. They are on "islands" so that you can drive to the left or rightt so suit the position of the filler cap. No silly reversing is required.
China has invested interest in EV's, hence the push in the BEV and PHEV, European and North American markets have investedninterest in oil, pretty simple to work out from both ends.
In the end consumers will decide, can see it already with low BEV resale and low demand from newer hybrid and BEV performance cars (AMG) for example.

In America the media is almost wholly responsible for any EV turndown here. Also, the over 100% tariff on Chinese EVs is doing nothing but allowing US companies to languish in new EV technology!

Share car companies will fight back to keep market share for a while. But slowing EV sales is more of a reflection of the state of the industry. Eevee's work pretty good in some situations. But not all. It's the other situations that are the majority.

No, it's not. Is it a great result? No.
In Australia, Tesla sales for the first 6 months of 2024 are 9.6% below last year. Overall sales of EV's are up 16.5% from last year (and the market as a whole is up 8.7% on last year-to-date). EV's (_including_ PHEV's) now represent 9.2% of the Australian new car market. Other brands (especially BYD/MG/GWM) are taking market share from Tesla.

There is blood in the water. Not all the legacy auto makers will survive what's coming and they know it. The best thing for them to do is lie because they know the truth means they're screwed.
I purchased my MYP last December because Tesla has the most efficient motors and the best charging network. And they update their cars’ software regularly OTA to keep them current. Why choose lesser brands?
OTA updates are now sttandard for most EVs. Nothing special about Tesla. Regarding efficiency I beg to differ. Independent tests have consistently shown that Tesla miles per kwh is middling. Tesla's charging nettwork in North America may be the best there because there is zero compettition but be warned; it is a monopoly or at best an oligopoly which would be illegal in many countries. It ties you to one or a few suppliers through ridiculous accounts or apps. In the UK and Europe there is plenty of compettition. Tesla cherry picks its charging locations leaving many areas with no Tesla charger for many miles. Fortunately tthe competition has far better coverage.
@@rogerphelps9939 I recently read that Mercedes’s OTA update requires owners to go to the dealership to install. And there’s just no comparison to Tesla’s software. Furthermore, the uptime among other charging networks are horrendous and unreliable. The horror stories about apps not working are a plenty.
