@@YardyHardy-z4h neither have I. this is the first i'm seeing and learning about this. the only sequel idea I recall hearing coming up through the 2010s was something about this Manhelltan story, where they end up getting sent to Hell and encounter this distorted corrupted version of NYC...I might be mixing some of this up with a fanfiction pitch watched on UA-cam years ago. But I think they might've used some stuff from the Manhelltan idea for that Ghostbusters video game for X-box or something.
Honestly there’s such a great movie they shot for 2 but watered it far too down for kids like me at the time. The extra dialogue scenes, esp in the beginning really make it more a comedy, plus would’ve been great to see Louis Tully chasing Slimer throughout the movie before the bus joke. Would’ve been nice to see Hardemeyer get sucked into the goo in his fit of rage but the best horror moment would be the freshly possessed Ray going nuts behind the wheel. You only really get a reaction shot from Murray & a fast corner taking in the montage, all that survives other than what was printed in the picture books & novelization
Damn, imagine being a ghost in this universe. Not only are you forced to haunt the Earth for eternity, you may have to spend most of it in a gas station in New Jersey. Jokes aside, this original, darker version of the film sounds awesome. Great research on this one Mr Bullets!
Another great “What If”. I remember reading in Cinefex magazine when Aykroyd told the effects wizards about the ghost then named “Onionhead”. He had not told anyone he had added this for his friend Belushi, and when described, someone said, “Hey sounds like Bluto in Animal House”. Aykroyd said nothing and everyone knew it was, essentially, Belushi’s ghost - which is why he “slimes” Bill Murray as that was originally his part.
I’d love to see an animated Ghostbusters movie like this, with all the fantastical ghosts in alternate dimensions, it could be something really special
You should watch the first two seasons of the cartoon The Real Ghostbusters. It was fantastic until mom's for mediocrity got a hold of it. The did time travel, interdimensional travel, all kinds of stuff...
If memory serves, the animated The Real Ghostbusters Winston gave one or two hints throughout the series that he served in the military before joining the team.
There's an episode or two of The Real Ghostbusters animated series that effectively places the team inside the original 'hopping across dimensions' concept. It's actually pretty cool.
Thanks for telling how much work was done to create the first Ghostbusters movie. It was a colossal achievement with a lot of changes that shaped it into a great action comedy with heart and soul, from the great cast to the great writing. Something that is not done as often today with new comedies produced. That's why the first Ghostbusters movie will remain a classic.
Also, unrelated, but I think Winston being the audience character in my opinion is something Lucas should've took notes for for the Prequel trilogy. I.E. have a character who's basically a POV for the audience, so we can have stuff ACTUALLY explained to us properly through said audience character.
Not only that but he plays a critical role in a comedy ensemble, "the straight man" someone who does not get as many great jokes and one-linners as when he does... they are legit. "I've seen sh!t that will scare you WHITE!"
Love Eddie, he's such a great presence... but man the first Ghostbusters is so near perfect for what we got. Love that cast, the plot, the humor...and the 80's weird it is. Thank you for this, I get excited for most all your videos.
I think the next inevitable REMAKE of Ghostbusters needs to be Dan Aykroyd's original idea fully realized. Interdimensonal, time, space traveling competitive business.
I dont think it needs to be a remake, it sounds like a sequel with the way it sounds with competing ghostbusting orgs in it. Sounds like a lot of progression into the lore than what the films established so far
It is hard to believe Ghostbusters changed so much during development. It's crazy to me that the film manage to come out as great and as goated as it did.
I read a story that Christopher Lee's agent told him there were two scripts that wanted him. One was some worthless thing Ivan Reitman was pushing but the OTHER was a Stephen Speilburg production sure to be a big hit. So, apparently, Lee's agent talked him out of "Ghostbusters," and into "1941," which wasn't a "flop" so much, but did kind of underperform. In a book on the original premise of the film, they DO mention "Gozer" being a middle aged man, but they implied that he was manifesting as Ivo Shendor. And while they didn't say it, I can't help but wonder if THAT'S where they wanted Christopher Lee? Could you imagine THAT voice saying; "Are YOU a god?"
Thanks for the new video. I think a few elements from the early version could be used for a part 3 after Frozen Empire. The main thing that lit an idea bulb was the competitive other Ghostbusters services. I've no idea how the tech would've become that widespread...well, maybe since Mayor Peck seized their old equipment in pt 2, maybe someone who seized the tech took it away and got it to a team to reverse engineer, improve and start their own Ghostbusting group. That's the most I can think of right now. I don't think that's enough to sustain a 90 min movie.
That would be very dicey. The packs contain radioactive material. They were described as mii nuclear reactors, probably fission. They would need protective clothes' and a special area to contain the radiation.
WOW. Just wow. I have been a Ghostbusters nerd since seeing the original 1984 film as a kid. I read ALL the books, interviews-yet you managed to condense the best facts into a fascinating video, AND throw in some even **I** didn't know!!! AWESOME job!!
Purple lights, they should have gone with that idea. I'm not sure but I know isn't allowed on the streets of Oahu, and I think they had to get a special exemption for New York since it's not a police vehicle.
I'm glad Ghostbusters turned out the way it did, everything about it is perfect, even the "janky" special effects, I hate to think what Eddie Murphy and John Candy would have done to it! Fantastic video as always!
Thank you so much for all that you do. My turtle just died and this is really helping ease the pain. You’re the marshmallow in my Lucky Charms. I love you. Xoxox
You notice how in every movie its kind of the actions of the ghostbusters that create the biggest effects on the world right? Ray made the stay puft, playing outlaw got the containment unit shut off and all the ghosts escape, sleeping on Gozer for 40 years barely stopping it, loose with the experiments letting loose garaka and eventually freeing every ghost again. Well i can see the ghostbusters eventually making a permanent rip in the dimensions and decades later they are outlaws and a dark future dystopia with a bunch of ghostbusting companies hiding ghosts in secret, running from cops just like the original script.
Great video! I kinda would like to see the original draft as like a comic book Elseworlds story one day. But it's also really cool how all these people collaborated to make such a funny and interesting film. I also get kinda nostalgic for the Filmation Ghost Busters animated show. The bit with Ecto-1 zapping the parking ticket was actually in the original novelization of Ghostbusters. I was always a little sad that it wasn't in the final cut of the movie.
Alternate universe ghostbusters has got to be crazy ah. I bet most universes GB was an obscure 80s scifi ahead of its time and has been rebooted a couple times and just cant get it right.
Ghostbusters is kinda like back to the future in that they are both cinematic masterpieces. I do think it would be the same after hearing what could have been .
It would have been kinda cool to have Belushi appear as a ghost in the original Ghostbusters Don't forget that maybe in a future video you could talk about how Chevy Chase was supposed to be in Animal House or maybe I imagined hearing that once
Ghostbusters worked because Ivan Weitzman decided to progress the audience slowly. Ghost contact I library to proton pack intro to trapping the first ghost. Then montage and on to possession to Gozer to a gigantic walking marshmallow man. Baby steps. The original hand antennas looked like a scientific recreation of a magic wand.
Ngl I did assume Eddie Murphy was originally sought out for Winston Zeddemore. It kinda blows my mind to learn he would’ve actually been the Egon character - although that would’ve been cool to see. 😆 I wonder if any of the discarded elements will show up in future films since it’s obvious they’re trying to turn the series into a sprawling franchise.
The fact that they could make this a reality, but with some changes to it, the crew is obviously different and won’t need the OGs nor the new crew in the frozen empire, and a new ghostbusters movie just came out too, this original GB concept would be called by me “Ghostbusters: The alternate reality”
Dan Akroyd is nuts, usually in a good way. Hopped into a discord server once and they were watching something, asked them what it was and they said "Dan Akroyd's autobiography" I clicked to join in and it was Coneheads.
Wait, New Jersey isn't an alternate dimension already? With Aykroyd's interest in the paranormal, it would be interesting to see his original concept made into a film - sounds like it would have ended up being a lot more of a horror film than what Ghostbusters became, could have been an interesting story. But I have no doubt it wouldn't have been anywhere as successful. Ghostbusters is a great example of a film being shaped by the creative people on it - Candy would have given us a very different Louis, maybe it would have worked, maybe not. Had they gotten a different director, it wouldn't have been as grounded and Ramis wouldn't have added his work to the script. Belushi instead of Murray would have brought a real different feel to the character. Any of these alone impacted the film but all of them together really changed the film in a positive way. I think any version would have been successful, I don't think any version other than what we got would have been a classic and talked about 40 years later. Going to see the new film tonight, Ghostbusters lives!
Back when Sony was trying to reboot the GB franchise, I always thought doing Dan Ackyrod's original vision would've been the way to go. Have it set in the orignal continuity but take place roughly a hundred years later.
Slimer was not an homage to Belushi. Studio asked SFX to change Slimer to resemble Belushi. SFX did nothing and pretended he made changes and Studio liked Slimer even though it was the same.
It's amazing how many changes the movie went through before even reaching production. It was all changed at the script level. And for the better for the most part (though I would've loved to see what it would have looked like if it included Belushi and Murphy). More movie productions should do this, honestly. Apparently, Christopher Nolan does this with his work. He writes and rewrites the movie at the script level. Which is why there are often very few deleted scenes with his movies. What you see on screen is largely what he ends up with. Imagine how much money studios could save if they didn't have to "fix" everything in reshoots and post-production.
Here's an idea for a future video: *The Original Plans for* *"The NeverEnding Story III: Escape From Fantasia"* The first screenplay by Karin Howard (who previously wrote the script for *"The NeverEnding Story II: The Next* *Chapter")* was to have Bastian Balthazar Bux being in Fantasia for most of the storyline, with his step-sister reading the book and initially trying to sabotage Bastian's story, before she eventually starts to help him out.
I wouldn't mind seeing something close to this being done now that the Ghostbusters are going through a bit of a revival. Maybe a spinoff using these unused story concepts for a cinematic version of The Extreme Ghostbusters, that would be cool.
Not good? Afterlife and Frozen Empire are amazing! They missed the window to give us what could have been those guys are nearly 75/80 years old. They pulled it off quite well I think. When the weirdness of "stranger things kid and Antman" in the movie fade over time they will be classics will stand the time test.
@HighFlyingEYE Everybody has their own tastes and all I know it. I don't mean you, unless the shoe fits but I just get the impression too many people don't LET themselves enjoy these movies that get all this hate. They just go into these children's movies expecting to get that same feeling the originals bring but that's impossible because of all the baggage of nostalgia that they associate with it. Movies are meant to stimulate the senses of Visual and Audio and a good story and invoke emotions. But the emotions people are searching for are related to memories that have to do with their life at the time the movie came out which the movie itself has zero to do with. Sometimes you have to let the kid in you watch and remember what about the actual movie you liked back then. Idk the instant hate for every movie that comes out is getting old. They are just as good or bad as any other movie ever made in their respective categories.
@@DblTap317 I wasn't hating on them I was just saying I didn't think they were very good, I guess the bar was set so high with the original movie which came out when I was 9 and at the time it blew my mind and still does to this day Ghostbusters and Back to the future along with Indiana Jones defined the 1980s for me
2 men made the movies worth watching back in the day Ernie and Bill just made it better Dan despite his great comedy presence actually was the true middle guy for once in what I am saying is that they are all needed for a great comedy pie
I have to ask but have you thought of doing something concerning free willy? I heard it would have been very different to what we got in 1993 and that even the ending would have been different.
Belushi as Venkman is the ONLY rare 'only if' concept that would have bettered what we got. Bill Murray was also fantastic, so it's not a diss on him, it's just John F***ing Belushi as Venkman, just imagine, he would have been perfection in that character role. Some people find it hard to imagine beyond what they know. But when it comes to this, it's the only time I can imagine Ghostbusters being better. Belushi as Venkman and Eddie Murphy as WInston. Oh, man. Sorry, Ernie Hudson was so underwhelming as Winston and I don't think he's that great an actor.
Aykroyd was going to call it _Ghost Chasers_ - the same name as the films used to parody _Ghostbusters_ in an episode of _The Critic._ I'll let you draw the analogy that the episode had Jary Sherman write the script for the third film that turned out so bad, even he thought it stunk.
I will always love the original Ghosterbusters, but if they ever decided to "reboot" the franchise, they should absolutely adapt the original story, it would be epic. Also I still hope they adapt the "Hellbent" story. PS I love Rick Moranis
wow! most of us never really stop and think of ALL that goes into making a movie and how things like death and job promotions can change the course for the worse or for the better. Some studios just get really lucky it seems.

This script is actually Good not bad But the original is still good from 1984
I want that Ecto 1 as a toy!
I like the original futuristic setting of 2012 for Ghostbusters and original Slimer looks like a Melonhead from Ohio folklore
A black Ecto 1 with purple is such a cool concept, I might just prefer it ver the actual white Ecto 1
I wouldn't mind seeing something close to this being done now that the Ghostbusters are going through a bit of a revival. Maybe a spinoff using these unused story concepts for a cinematic version of The Extreme Ghostbusters, that would be cool.
I would love to read the Ghost Smashers script in its entirety.
3:09 is the post credit scene from ghostbusters frozen empire the tank station
What really puzzles me is a Ghostbusters 3 sat in development hell for decades then we get 2 movies in 2 years that frankly aren't very good
Not good? Afterlife and Frozen Empire are amazing! They missed the window to give us what could have been those guys are nearly 75/80 years old. They pulled it off quite well I think. When the weirdness of "stranger things kid and Antman" in the movie fade over time they will be classics will stand the time test.
@@DblTap317 I didn't enjoy them, sorry
@@DblTap317 I wasn't hating on them I was just saying I didn't think they were very good, I guess the bar was set so high with the original movie which came out when I was 9 and at the time it blew my mind and still does to this day Ghostbusters and Back to the future along with Indiana Jones defined the 1980s for me
@HighFlyingEYE they better not mess with bttf though I draw the line there! LoL
This channel is the best
2 men made the movies worth watching back in the day Ernie and Bill just made it better Dan despite his great comedy presence actually was the true middle guy for once in what I am saying is that they are all needed for a great comedy pie
Man... Ecto-1 looks sick as fu*! in black.
Ray's "sexual encounter" with a ghost was always and still is THE most uncomfortable scene in that whole movie.
Ghostbusters an absolutely underrated classic
I wouldn't say it's underrated, but it's definitely a classic
How is it underrated, it was a massive hit when it came out and continues to be beloved decades later. It’s perfectly rated.
I have to ask but have you thought of doing something concerning free willy? I heard it would have been very different to what we got in 1993 and that even the ending would have been different.
I’d have to look into it
Belushi as Venkman is the ONLY rare 'only if' concept that would have bettered what we got.
PS I love Rick Moranis
well researched
wow! most of us never really stop and think of ALL that goes into making a movie and how things like death and job promotions can change the course for the worse or for the better. Some studios just get really lucky it seems.
I enjoy hearing about the Original plans for Ghostbusters.
