The two characters also resemble the critics. Michael Lerner made up to look like Roger Ebert is better known for his appearances in The Coen Brothers movies.
There was an earlier attempt of a American Godzilla film back in 1983 called *"GODZILLA: King of the Monsters in 3-D"* with Steve Miner - who directed the first two *"Friday* *the 13th"* sequels - hired as the director and Fred Dekker (who was not a fan of Godzilla) wrote the screenplay. Demi Moore *("Ghost")* and Powers Boothe *("Tombstone")* were considered to play Dana Martin (a female journalist) and Peter Daxton (an eyepatch- wearing US Navy Colonel) with Raymond Burr (who played "Steve Martin" in the 1956 Americanized Cut of the original 1954 Toho film *"GOJIRA")* considered for a cameo. The main reason this was never made was because Steve Miller was stubborn about wanting the film to be 3D, which was going to make the budget gargantuan.
It still amazes me how the 98 movie wound up costing more than the movie Jan De Bont wanted to make. Overall, G98 is not really the worst Godzilla movie and is a decent monster flick. It’s just that Tri-Star wanted their own Jurassic Park and not even the studio cared about the monster. I still remember to this day Emmerich ranting about how he has to hear about how his movie sucked all over again when the 2014 film was about to release. Godzilla definitely destroyed his reputation, that’s for sure.
Well, it's on him, he could have either respected the source material or if he absolutely can't stand Godzilla at all just as he claims, he could have simply not made a Godzilla film.
Bonus Fact: Hellraiser creator Clive Barker was also at one point hired to pitch a storyline for TriStar in 1993. His pitch would've been set in the future of 1999 during the Y2K paranoia in New York City with the world on the verge of collapsing. However the studio rejected his pitch for being too dark. I mean this is the same guy that made a movie about demonic gimps that pull people's skin off with chains. What were they expecting?
Despite liberties taken, the story actually sounds pretty good. It would have been interesting to see if made, but I’m sure there would be backlash because of changes to the mythology
i would love to get a godzilla created from "atlantians" to fight alian invaders, instead of the overgrown insta pregnant iguana without the iconic heatray. I think its not too important how Godzilla come to be, but it is very important that Godzilla IS Godzilla. Posture, Backspines, AND Heatray. These three things are that, what makes Godzilla, Godzilla. Without one of the three, its not Godzilla anymore.
@@Kenichi2002 change the script a little bit and make the drone malfunction, get discovered by Atlantians, they mostly figure it out and make their own monster that won’t be controlled by the aliens. They can’t control him either however, and after his creation he destroys Atlantis, but, when the aliens send another drone Godzilla, who has free will, fights their monster off because he’s territorial. His existence being both a blessing and a curse, as he has his own interests at heart, causing him to save mankind one minute, and fight us the next. Maybe he’d get his atomic breath while destroying Atlantis and not from his creation, like when he’s destroying their power plants he gets irradiated and gains atomic breath. He still stands in as a nuke with the Atlantians standing in for Americans, who created the nuke, but throughout the Cold War thought it would be our own destruction. It’d be more difficult to criticize the change in origin as it still conveys the same messaging, even if it’s a bit less direct. This would also pave the way for King Ghidorah and Gigan, the monsters the aliens made to kill rogue monsters prior to their invasion.
I read the script for the 94 film, it is so fun. It's infinity creative with big ideas, yet mixed with pulpy monster fun and dark humor. It's a lot more fantasy take on Godzilla than the more sci-fi nuclear version. But it's honestly a better concept imo
Working on a massive essay on everything regarding my thoughts on Tri-Star Godzilla remake, including the cancelled version. Almost to editing. My thoughts is that this version, while better, still has plenty of flaws. Biggest tragedy for me is not getting the Gryphon.
It would have been interesting to see what Tim Burton and Jan De Bont would offer to the franchise. But its honestly a shame that we never got to see their versions instead of this one. I know some people love the 1998 film despite the backlash but honestly i think i would have love to see Tim's or Jan's Version of The King Of The Monsters
I think Tim had Mars Attacks in mind so probably that. I'd love Tim's kitsch style and maybe he'd make Godzilla another Edward Scissorhands but I think have been a bit knowing/tounge-in-cheek.
@@davidjames579 I once imagined a perfect timeline in which Tim Burton's take on Godzilla doesn't suck and possibly working out if it was something more in vein of Shin Godzilla, with Godzilla initially being a googly-eyed radioactive monstrosity crawling out of the sea (and I'd have it wreck some seaside town in Louisiana instead of New York or some other cliched big city, just to subvert expectations but eh, LOL) and then coming back evolved into a giant zombie-like saurian titan, and all the attempts of bombing/shooting it down failing because it's tough as hell. Can still have Johnny Depp as the main human character if he wants to, tho I would love to see Michael Keaton and some other Tim Burton collaborator coming back in the role of a politician or something. The monster, just like in Shin, would be the result of Americans poorly trying to get rid of radioactive waste into the deep sea, and I thought it'd be neat and respectful if Japan or otherwise a Japanese character offered the freezing solution to stop it. None of that "The French are to blame!" to remove America's fault in creating Godzilla. Plus imagine what killer soundtrack Danny Elfman might've provided. In this version I also imagine having a song like "Who will know" to give a sympathetic/tragic angle to Godzilla since Tim Burton is into that thing when it comes to monsters.
@@DeepEye1994 There's actually a drawing Tim Burton made with Godzilla on the Internet. He actually looks like a fat alligator. And is teal green with yellow dorso plates. I remember one drawing he did of an alien that resembled one from Invasion of Astro Monster. And since Burton grew up with monster movies from the 30s-60s, it's most likely Burton grew up with the Showa era films like Invasion of Astro Monster. (Which Godzilla and King Ghidorah made a cameo in Pee Wee, and in Mars Attacks the aliens' weakness is high frequent sound like how they were defeated in Astro Monster.) And any references he makes with Kaiju monsters are depicted as classy B-movies like the earlier Godzilla films. Like even though many think Burton makes dark films, they're still quirky or darkly goofy. And so if I had to guess, he wouldn't make Godzilla a scary horror monster, but more of a love letter to the Godzilla he grew up with and embrace the sci-fi elements UPDATE: I just found a video with Tim Burton visiting the set of Godzilla vs Mothra (1992) and when asked which one he liked, it was Astro Monster. (Monster Zero) 😁 ua-cam.com/video/zLSHcjmwzA0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
This actually sounds like it would be a fun and well made movie, plus with those Stan Winston effects and Bill Paxton, defiently would of been memorable
In a departure from series tradition, the Godzilla in this film is said to be an artificially-created species rather than a naturally born or irradiated species. Terry Rossio would later be recruited as part of the writers' room tasked with creating the story for Legendary's Godzilla vs. Kong and write the film's screenplay.[6] In that film, Godzilla attacked Kong on all fours, as he briefly does in this script.
it's funny that they wanted Godzilla 98 to be a serious movie, because when I saw it the first time in my teenage years almost 20 years ago I laughed so hard like it was one of the greatest (unintentional) comedies I had seen in a long time! :D
To me, it’s a bit like J.J Abrams’ Superman: Flyby, where a lot of liberties got taken with the lore, but I actually liked the story, even though it has some problems
The US should do a movie using Godzilla about admitting a mistake, taking responsability, apologising and helping out rebuilding after the destruction and showing compassion. Something like that.
@@cmere9141 I'm fairly sure he's talking about the atrocities that Japan committed during WWII that they either never apologized, delivered half-assed apologies or even tried to deny. Also Japan doesn't look at WWII as a colossal mistake, Japan's role in WWII is either portrayed in a better light in there, like mangas where Japan won WWII lead by great heroes or they are kept in the dark to the point that young people demonstrate an America-level of ignorance about it. Also despite how crazy it sounds if it wasn't for the atomic bombings Japan was preparing every civilian from children to women to elderly to fight back with sticks, knives and whatever they could muster against armed troops in case of a land invasion that would result in massive bloodbaths.
The fact that they scrapped Godzilla ‘94 because it cost too much money, even though the Roland Emmerich film ended up costing way more, will always make my blood boil.
Another banger as always. I’ve always been a huge fan of Godzilla, and having seen the ‘98 Godzilla recently, I was more than a little bummed by what we got. Learning about this was fascinating to me, and I’m very grateful that you brought this to my attention. The only issue I have with the plan they had was that it could have confused me at a time when Godzilla’s best franchise imo was finishing up, soon with one of Godzilla’s best movies ever made.
The Godzilla we did get in the 9s was completely fine and looked awesome. Yeah, it doesn’t look like Godzilla but that was the point, it was different and just as awesome
Wow, what could have been is a major understatement with this movie. It is ironic that budget costs were a an issue at the time considering how expensive movies are now. I think it would have been better than ‘Zilla’ 98. Thanks again for another great video 👍🏽
This original version not getting made is a crime. While the script wasn't perfect (the aliens and advanced ancient humans feel completely out of place in a "serious" movie), it sounds like a great adaptation of Godzilla for American audiences, and it would've been 100% better than Emmerich's version
One of Alien 3's unproduced screenplay's was reworked into a novel and released to the public. I wouldn't mind this script getting the same treatment. Although I assume Tristar owns that particular script, and them no longer having the Godzilla licence would likely muddy things. On the other hand, the idea that Godzilla was created by an ancient civilization specifically to protect Earth is very similar to Gamera the Guardian of the Universe. And that movie is great, so maybe it's a good thing this version never got made.
This is the best canceled Godzilla movie. It’s just so awesome with aliens, ancient Earth civilizations, shape-shifting alien gyphons, Godzilla being made from Dinosaur genes (which reminds me of how Toho used a T-Rex, Stegosaurus, & Iguanodon for their Godzilla), and epic monster moments & battles. Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot have confirmed they were going to use King Ghidorah as the antagonist. That would’ve been awesome!
I have always loved the Zilla design as his own kaiju so I’m not mad we got the 98 movie but I’ve always wished I could briefly teleport to another universe where this one was made instead
The fact this was so reminiscent of Godzilla 2014 is so sadenning. This would have been a hit. Also I'm surprised they never planned on scaled down animatronics, like how buildings are handled in Japanese kaiju films. Those wouldn't have been as high quality but much easier.
Thanks for creating this video, I had no idea that this was even in the works at that time and its cool to have a brief dream of what could've been. I think that that movie would have done well and the design was great.

Honestly, with the massive leaps that CGI has made since 1994, I kinda wanna see someone take a second shot at this film. Hell, if you want, make it a Monsterverse project.
Then you definitely haven't watched that many proper godzilla films 😂, the modern American godzilla films show how godzilla should be done in America. Not this....even the animated sequel to this did godzilla better
This movie sounds SO MUCH COOLER than what we got in 1998. True the plot sounds more like a Gamera movie but taking everything into account that's more of a grain of salt than an issue.
I’m actually loving the Winston Godzilla design a lot but I prefer the story to set in the 1950s with only him minus the Atlantis esque origin and the Aliens.
Isn't Godzilla King of the Monster has kinda same plot? Angry scientist because his son is dead in the San Francisco battle, who wants Godzilla to die? Then an alien Monster shows up, and realizing Big G is Earth's only hope and helps Big G.
All I remember about Godzilla 98 was RAIN ... rain, and more rain ... The film was SO damn wet and grey and gloomy ... which I assume was used to mask the effects.
Didn't realize how obsessed TriStar was when it came to penny pinching. Ronald Emmerich's film made money, but the budget of his film was basically the same as Jan De Bont's. They made around 400 million in merchandising on this film but fan backlash was pronounced. TriStar basically killed their franchise from the get-go.
Emmrich is a real dick… he actually told Toho “either we make him like this, or we don’t make it at all”. I personally would have banned him from making the film…
1:19-1:25 This particular edit was HILARIOUS and I appreciated it. Have a like. lol Edit: Nevermind, ALL of this is a fun edit. You tried to find footage to piece together what a never made movie might look like. What an effort. NICELY DONE!
Yeah, the Godzilla that they designed for movie that never happened because of corporate greed is just amazing. He not just looks similar to OG Godzilla, but has also little differences in design that make him stand out from what Toho did back then. So yeah, that was a missed opportunity, but again corporate greed ruined everything. And instead we have what we have. And while I like 94 Zilla, I still think that the movie that they cancelled would be a lot better. But the only thing that we can do now is if any fan would just take 94 end result of godzilla and replace that lizard thing with what Godzilla should have been. And then we had a battle with Griffon recreated by someone on UA-cam already, and all there is to do is to add it in to the movie and that's it. But that's a lot of work to do, so I doubt that anybody would wanna even try it out.
@@supershockerJGONZALEZ Like it's gonna do anything. And eve if it does, they ain't gonna make it the way we wanted it. So yeah, just accept, forgive and let go.
It's a shame this movie was never made, and we now can see many elements eventually been USE in the Mosnterverse.....like the death of a love one and the protagonist wanted revenge on Goji will eventually be use in KOTM, the ending of the fight between the Griffin and Godzilla is literally the ending of Godzilla 2014, and the military and humans helping Godzilla in the final act is literally been the final act in all the Monsterverse films to this day in one way or the other......seriously if Legendary can get this script, I think would be cool to see at least the Griffin be added to the Monsterverse, also, I love the Monsterverse Goji design, but is a shame this one never got use, Stan Winston as always showing his knowledge about ART, admitting that the original design was already perfect and adapted was the best move, sad the greedy idiotic producers took them 20 years LITERALLY to realize he was RIGHT.
Great video and all around fantastic channel. I like how Godzilla in minus one has similar features to Stan's Godzilla, this was truly a missed opportunity indeed. Keep up the great work
In my opinion, I feel like the American Godzilla they did is a little more accurate and It’s cool in its own design. It’s not better than the OG design but I think it’s good!
Imagine being fired for trying to make a movie that's too expensive, but the guy that replaces you ends up making a movie that's just as expensive as your own
Real sad that this version of TriStar Godzilla didn't make it to the big screen. That said, there are two good things that came out of Emmerich's GINO: 1. Godzilla: The Series, an incredible animated series where the surviving baby from the '98 movie grows up and becomes worthy of the name Godzilla, fighting against other giant monsters, and mixes aspects of the Japanese Godzilla (the atomic breath, invulnerability against the military) and his father (speed and agility, digging). Not to mention a likable main cast on team H.E.A.T. 2. The film made Toho, who had killed Godzilla at the end of the Heisei era in 1995, angry enough to revive Godzilla the following year with Godzilla 2000 (1999), kicking off the Millennium era. Fun fact: GINO, officially named Zilla by Toho (for taking away the God from Godzilla), made its debut in the Millennium era in Godzilla: Final Wars... where its completely annihilated by the real Godzilla in less than a minute 🤣. Plus, the mistakes made in the 1998 film served as an example of what not to do with an American Godzilla film. Say what you will about Godzilla '2014 and the Monsterverse, its a better representation of Godzilla than whatever Emmerich made.
Other unmade *"GODZILLA"* films that deserve a video here includes: Roland Emmerich's *"GODZILLA 2",* (a treatment by Tab Murphy) which took place 2 years after the 1st film with the surviving baby Godzilla from the first film, now an adult (with its own litter of 3-story tall "Teen-Zillas", including the smallest of the group named "Runt") living in Australia, and eventually go face to face with the new antagonistic kaiju: A giant insectoid, literally named "Queen Bitch". Joe Dante's *"GODZILLA Reborn",* a direct sequel to the U.S. Cut of Toho's *"GODZILLA 2000: Millennium",* where Godzilla goes on a rampage in Hawaii, gets into a comatosed state thanks to the military (changed from originally getting killed halfway in the story and then cloned back to life), only to then be revived to take on a lava-bat kaiju named Miba who emerged from the still active Mauna Loa.
They really need to retcon Godzilla 1998 into the monsterverse and explain that all the TV broadcasts in 1998 didn’t go outside NYC and Monarch somehow covers it all up and claims all the footage was fake or from a film, and Manhatten was mostly evacuted, and people told it was due to a terror attack, id love to see Zilla in the momsterverse
We tend to imagine unmade things in their best possible light in our heads, but from the little I heard of the story, this version sounds just as bad as 98 Godzilla.
I remember all of this. Hard to believe that it has now been 30 years! Just chalk this up as what could go wrong, indeed went wrong! Perhaps in a future project, we will eventually see the Stan Winston Godzilla design and the Gryphon (I don't know if Sony still owns the rights to that creature. If they do, Legendary has now set up shop at Sony, so perhaps we can nudge them to feature the Gryphon in some future movie).
I genuinely think the movie could've been a really cool take, with a really cool Godzilla design. The design gives me a Minus 1, and like you said a lizard, and komoda dragon esk feel. It would've been cool to see this Godzilla fight the Griffin. Obviously the origin of Godzilla is a weird take, but I think it would've made up for the cool scenes that could've been shown.
That literally would have been the best Godzilla movie of all time. The human character’s motivations actually sound interesting and the gryphon looks INSANELY COOL.
Unpopular non purist opinion : Zillasauraus 98 was not as bad as most claim. I roll my eyes at fanboys of everything but it sucks when fanboyism blinds you from just enjoying a movie for what it is. Sure its missing some crucial aspects of Godzilla that it's nothing more than a giant Dino but its still a bloody good 90s popcorn flick in lines of Jurassic Park, independence day, Jumanji. Hollywood was at its peak at that time with whimsical and goofy characters but having memorable lines and personality. Sure, none of the Hollywood Zillas match the human element of Minus one, but they don't have to! Look at the modern films especially, most characters are unintentionally cringe or they are intentionally written to push some leftist agenda , so they are devoid of any actual likeability. Hollywood while being amazing at CGI lost their charm of the 90s.
It was a fun movie, and I love that 90's era blockbuster films. I agree with the purists that he's not Godzilla, but I wont let that stop me enjoying the movie. I'm partial to the theory that he's just another kaiju that was mislabeled by the citizens of New York as Godzilla.
Huh? So...TriStar wanted monster sidekick to make a sequel without the rights? They weren't exactly sidekicks, but I'm guessing that's where those velociraptors look-alike in the 1998 film (d)evolved from. The egg hatching at the end even hints at a sequel that never came to be. That's for the better, tho.
@livelongandtroll9108 Yeah, they technically did, lol. It was a Saturday morning cartoon that had about 2 seasons, and they did try to make Zilla more like Godzilla in Japan by giving it an atomic breath and having it fight a new monster every episode. The series is called "Godzilla: the animated series" if you are interested in seeing what it's about.
I actually love Roland Emmerich's "Godzilla". If you watch the movie closely, you'll realize that it's not supposed to be the actual Godzilla. In the movie the Japanese sailor that the French agents interview calls the monster "Gojira" which is the Japanese name for Godzilla. Which means that Godzilla also exists in this movie as a fictional character (just like in our world). The sailor just had no other way to describe what he saw. So, the monster in the movie is just a giant mutated iguana, and was never intended to be the same creature from the ToHo films. If you accept that fact then it's easier to enjoy the film for what it is. A really good giant monster movie, with excellent effects, that's actually pretty frightening. In fact the scene where he first comes ashore in Manhattan is down right terrifying. I could really never understand why that movie gets the hate that it does. It's really a lot of fun if you don't get hung up on the design of Godzilla.
The movie is better as a beast from 20,000 fathoms remake which is a better mindset to watch it in instead of thinking everyone labeling it as godzilla without knowing an actual godzilla exist (unless you watch this film with the mindset that it's actually canon to gmk and FW to a extent)
Someone should do a petition to bring this back, continue the project, add a few new modern elements, and Basically just do it right. Basically call it "Godzilla 94, Redemption"
I am in minority here, but I actually like Godzilla ‘97. I can agree that it’s GINO, but as a movie I like it. One thing that Emmerich does differently with his films is that he approaches them as catastrophe films; ID4 is not a classic Alien invasion film in that sense but a catastrophe film. And I liked that approach to his take on Godzilla as well.
It's crazy that Roland Emmerich refused to film this script because he wanted to do "his own thing" and he ended up remaking The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms for his version of Godzilla.

It's well deserved.
His arrogance will be the Ghost of his Past until he met his grave.
What were they expecting?
getting the same people who worked on jurrassic park is actually an amazing idea
Until one Director decided to throw it all away and do "his own thing" 🙄
@@Hevertt66790 Especially funny because "his own thing" ended up just being what the studio wanted.
Despite liberties taken, the story actually sounds pretty good. It would have been interesting to see if made, but I’m sure there would be backlash because of changes to the mythology
Still a lot better than what we got with Roland Emmerich.
i would love to get a godzilla created from "atlantians" to fight alian invaders, instead of the overgrown insta pregnant iguana without the iconic heatray.
Honestly sounds more suitable for Gamera than Godzilla. Though regardless, still would've been better than Roland Emmerich's film in the end.
@@trusty6625 true, for Gamera it would be the PERFECT plot ^^

That Gryphon design was goated. You can still technically use it in a future movie.
I read the script for the 94 film, it is so fun. It's infinity creative with big ideas, yet mixed with pulpy monster fun and dark humor. It's a lot more fantasy take on Godzilla than the more sci-fi nuclear version. But it's honestly a better concept imo

And so if I had to guess, he wouldn't make Godzilla a scary horror monster, but more of a love letter to the Godzilla he grew up with and embrace the sci-fi elements
UPDATE: I just found a video with Tim Burton visiting the set of Godzilla vs Mothra (1992) and when asked which one he liked, it was Astro Monster. (Monster Zero) 😁

In a departure from series tradition, the Godzilla in this film is said to be an artificially-created species rather than a naturally born or irradiated species.
Terry Rossio would later be recruited as part of the writers' room tasked with creating the story for Legendary's Godzilla vs. Kong and write the film's screenplay.[6] In that film, Godzilla attacked Kong on all fours, as he briefly does in this script.
no matter how hard people hate about the Godzilla in this movie, he will still forever be my fav design for a Godzilla

The US should do a movie using Godzilla about admitting a mistake, taking responsability, apologising and helping out rebuilding after the destruction and showing compassion. Something like that.
I like the real life parallels to that idea
@dinofiles what mistake are we talking? I am adressing the atomic/hydrogenic bomb and the aftermath Godzilla stands for/is about.

This original version not getting made is a crime. While the script wasn't perfect (the aliens and advanced ancient humans feel completely out of place in a "serious" movie), it sounds like a great adaptation of Godzilla for American audiences, and it would've been 100% better than Emmerich's version
It’s basically the same story used in 2016
One of Alien 3's unproduced screenplay's was reworked into a novel and released to the public.
The plot should've become a Novel in my opinion.

Real sad that this version of TriStar Godzilla didn't make it to the big screen.
That said, there are two good things that came out of Emmerich's GINO:

Yup!
The Zilla baby did lead into to the cartoon though, which to its credit was pretty good, honestly.
@@thegungerbrospodcast7671 I didn't know about that. So, TriStar did get their spin-off after all
@livelongandtroll9108 Yeah, they technically did, lol.
My recommendation 😁

One thing that Emmerich does differently with his films is that he approaches them as catastrophe films; ID4 is not a classic Alien invasion film in that sense but a catastrophe film. And I liked that approach to his take on Godzilla as well.
What SHOULD have been.
