The Actual REASON Palpatine’s Face Changed (NOT Sith Alchemy) - Star Wars Explained
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 лип 2018
- In Star Wars Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine's duel with Mace Windu left his face pretty...different...while many think it's from sith alchemy (which may be true in deep dark legends), it's actually been explained in the Revenge of the Sith novelization.
What do you think? Let me know.
May the force be with you!!!

Did the fight with Mace also change his voice? He went from sounding like my great uncle to Count Chocula.
I would imagine just like the outer skeletal and muscular tissue deformed so too did his vochal chords. No different then talking to a burn victim - many never sound the same.
@Michael Rossi That's simply because the actor was younger back then. It makes sense that since he is older in these movies, his voice would be deeper. Just like Vader's voice being very raspy in Rogue One because James Earl Jones is older.

@@saturniunyttech679 He's an imposter. I'M THE SENATE
Many imposters.
There approximately 200 billion galaxies in the known universe. 97% of which we could never reach, due to the constant expansion of space itself.
While I didn't know the term as a kid, always thought this was him revealing his true form (whether on purpose or just losing his concentration) rather than it actually being a disfigurement. I then thought him telling the public that the fight left him "scarred & deformed" was just another lie to cover up what actually happened.
Personally I prefer that because it shows how deep into the Dark Side he was that not only did his face become distorted from his use of the Dark Side, but that he was able to hide that with the Dark Side. It plays into the "abilities some consider to be unnatural" line from before rather than just accidentally melting his own face.
THIS! Personally I will always hold that as a head-canon, especially since other Sith had lost their bodies and such from using a lot of dark force abilities in the EU!
Agreed, I didn't really get into star wars untill I played the KOTOR games 1 and 2. The Sith in those games were always deformed in some way, even Treya when she reveals herself. It just makes more sence that the dark side corrupts the body has well as the spirit.

@@ryder5019 it was never continously reflected back on him.
Does Palpatine not know Force Lighting has an 'Off' button? He just keeps that stuff going and going...
I;m actually wondering that. He's now lightninged himself almost or exactly to death three times now. I do wonder if this is kind of an all or nothing power.
If he stopped mace would've cut him to bits and he needed for Anakin to panic and pity him, for him to convince him the only chance to save his wife was slipping away
Maybe it's like actually being electrocuted, your stuck as your body seizes up so he couldn't change from what he was doing, although he does carry on talking which means that theory is possibly out the window. But if you think about it, stick a metal rod into a plug socket and you won't be able to move unless the current stops or you are pulled away by something... Don't actually try that at home kids.
In RotJ, he is mostly electrocuting Vader, that one doesn't count.
Dooku could stop and Palpatine stopped with Luke multiple times. In Episode 3 he was trying to lure Anakin to kill Mace, in 6 he was trying to break free from Vader's grip and in 9 he did stop. If you look closely he stops shooting at Rey but by then she's a conduit for the Jedi Order's ghosts and they're concentrating all the Force onto him through the Skywalker blades. Remember QuiGon even said that 'we stand behind you Rey'

@@ScooterinAB George Lucas says in the original trilogy he's a clone body so
@@Boristien405 Lucas also said that the Special Editions were his true vision, yet be went on to make some-three other major edits. Lucas also said that he had a definitive plan for 12 films when it's clear that he only had plans to make one. Lucas said a lot of things, but they weren't all true.
Another possibility is that Sidious knew from studying old Sith lore that Sith begin to undergo physical decay and mutation once they've fully immersed themselves in the dark side, so he deliberately held back much of his power for years to prevent this from occurring. While powerful enough to orchestrate his plans, he could not truly embrace his full dark side potential until AFTER gaining absolute political power, because he needed to pass as an ordinary human with no unique strength in the Force while senator and chancellor. This is also why he relied so heavily on apprentices and other stand-ins to do his biding. By the time he dueled Windu his plans were complete, so he allowed all of the hatred and darkness he'd been suppressing for years to flow forth, transforming him in an instant.

The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities... Some consider to be unnatural.
Would "facelift" be one of those abilities?
I think not.
Sam Picklesimer fuck u
Funny how the light side is not natural either since it is space magic lol.
The Dark side is natural, such as the Light side of the Force, both are the Force, the one that creates life, the one that's in everything. The unnatural part was about some of those abilities that the (here mentioned) Dark side brings in. Those abilities are considered to be unnatural. Yes, it is space magic and yes it is unnatural for us, but in the far far away galaxy, the Force was before everything, the force is in everything, the Force is the most natural thing in the universe. Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

@@MrParkerman6 Lightning by a big difference of electrons between 2 things; rather Lightning is the result of the excess electrons moving from one side to another.
So in theory, sith could create lightning by controlling electrons with the force. here is a better explanation: ua-cam.com/video/_8amsn4vFN4/v-deo.html
I always assumed the constant use of force lightning in that moment changed his appearance rapidly. It's already canon that using the dark side changes you the deeper you delve into it. Not only did Palpatine's skin color change but so did his eyes to that distinctive yellow color. His voice also changed too. Personally I think that pouring everything he had into his force powers to repel Windu is ultimately what changed him so quickly...

One thing that I was curious about was how Palpatine's voices has a deep echo right after the duel, like that was his true self.
While the wrinkled face was definitely a result of lightning burns, it's definitely a symbol of palpatine dropping his facade of kindness.

The actual (t)reason...
What I have to wonder is why people blasted by force lightning aren't all maimed and hideous if this is the case. The idea that sith alchemy was used to further preserve palpatine's benign appearance despite the ravages of the darkside, only for force lightning to interact with it in such a way as to leave him looking outright worse than he normally would always made the most sense to me.
Totally! Why wasnt Luke disfigured?
Well, Sidious has wicked power when it comes to lightning. I guess I've always just kind of thought that he was using "more power", or at least was using more of the Dark side as he sent the arcs at Mace, which in turn came at him, which is probably partly why he had to stop, besides the fact that it was killing him. Comparatively, he was trying to kill Luke slowly and painfully, so perhaps his lightning wasn't as powerful in that instance. That's just my theory though, I'm not an expert so I could totally be wrong.
Because if you're the one shooting the lightening, and then it's getting reflected back on you for a long period, then you'll be cooking yourself. Like a battery with both ends being touched by a paper clip.
not "more power" but " unliiiimmmiittteeeddd powwwwwweeerrr"
The Spanish Inquisition I have to admit if the sith alchemy theory is false then I'd have to lean on your theory. It makes a good deal of sense despite relying on a few assumptions. But then so does the sith alchemy theory since that whole technique iirc was in the sith book for star wars rpg and never even confirmed as something Sidious did.

Mce 1863 The majority of the lighting hit palpatine in the face. Luke was getting shocked all over. It was concentrated on Palpatines face as Mace pushed his saber towards his face.
Mce 1863 He got lightning all over his brain and that's why became an emo Jedi who tried to kill his nephew

Yep. The whole Sith mask thing was just one of a long list of unnecessary explanations for something that is easily explained; his face was melted by by lightning. Also, he's really, really old in Return of the Jedi. He's just going to end up looking wrinkled and weird looking anyways.
I think they wanted to "reveal" it by making him look exactly like the emperor, and wanted to test out their new CGI magic.
If his face melted by lightning, then why did it not melt Luke's face?
@@user85937 Distance, time, and intensity. Luke was hit a few times from a distance for the purpose of torture. Windu was shot with the intent to kill. The amount of time in which each was shot differs, and Windu deflected the entirety of Palps' attack back at him, while Luke was hit at a distance with less intensity. It's like the difference between being hit by part of a shotgun blast of by all of it.
Yeah but his whole body looks like his face I'm pretty sure. And that lighting clearly didn't reach across the whole body so.
It's been a while since I watched them, but the impression I got at the time was that Darth Sidious was very old, because one of the stories he told to Anakin about a Sith apprentice killing his own Sith Master in order to become the master, he could only have known if he had been that apprentice, centuries before. I took it that his Sith magic had held back the ravages of time, like Dorian Grey, so that he could infiltrate the senate posing as the benign Palpatine (a false identity he must have created a few decades before), but that his fight with Windu exhausted him so much that the years caught up with him, like when Grey's painting gets stabbed and the spell breaks.
SW Theory: it would be great to hide a prequel meme in your fan film.
For Darth Sidious seeing his new body damage would be akin to Sacrificeing the role of The Chancellor casting it off to become The Emperor, as a turning point in the Sith plan. also seeing this as a new weapon he can use in puplic opinion.
To be honest i never doubted that it was the reflected force lightning since i watched this movie in theatre back when i was 9 years old...
I always thought it was his “disguise” leaving him as he weakened from the lightning. As we know, he clearly could hide the dark within him from even the strongest Jedi, yet after weakened by the fight with Mace, his true self was revealed

If I recall from the novel Darth Plagues novel, Sidiuous says his namesake was what he was always was and is. Palpatine was a role that he played. And played beautifully, I might add.
The lightening removed the force ability that was concealing his true appearance. That ability is obviously called force skin.
Then Rey should have been disfigured as well.
@Derick G yeah right I realized that after posting the comment and forgot to delete it.
I always thought he became disfigured by the force lightning. Never heard the other idea. :)
No it's dark side corruption.
Great video. Thanks. I always thought that Darth Sidious had a kind of "mask" (the face of Palpatine) to hide his true identity, but if it is true that the lightning force has disfigured his face, how come this hasn't happened to anyone else? We have seen many being hit by lightning forces (Anakin in episode 2, Mace Windu included in the scene, other characters in clone wars) and nobody has suffered similar "damage"
I like that the Jedi "hurt" the Sith before being wiped out. It's as if the Sith almost lost everything. Vader become half machine and Sidious was wounded. Great storying telling!
Thanks for the video. I actually read the Revenge of the Sith novelization.
Alex Lu You and a million of us... its a #1 bestseller....
Alex Lu I own it in a trilogy that includes the Labyrinth of Evil,Revenge of the Sith, and Rise of Darth Vader
your interpretation of the text is wrong. it says "*as though* the muscle beneath his face was burning away, *as though* the bones were softening". meaning, thats what it looks like was happening, not what was literally happening.
the following is my own speculation: palpatine was being disfigured by the dark side, but was able to prevent this from manifesting physically, through use of the force. during his battle with mace windu, his concentration slipped, allowing the disfigurement to manifest. that doesnt mean that either face is an illusion, both are real, but if he hadnt been concerned with maintaining the appearance of senator palpatine, it would have slowly changed over a long period of time, not suddenly
I think you are on to it.
And what's to say your interpretation is right? We have a very simply, reasonable answer that doesn't require any additional material to explain, and we have a convoluted answer that requires a whole lot of hand waving and literal magic to make it make sense. Which is the most likely?
The novelization of Revenge of the Sith was one of the greatest science-fantasy novels of our generation! It gave me so much insight into Anakin and who he was.

Talk about an obscure reference for a joke, lol
Well I totally loved legends even before Disney took over, so it's still sith alchemy to me. Btw, it's the only option that actually explains why he never had any signs of dark side corruption on his face before that scene. Even the most powerful sith lords of old couldn't hide it without using sith alchemy, and Sidious dug very deep into the dark side, it totally must've had it's toll on his appearance.
Great vid
I don’t care what is canonical in the eye of Disney, personally I consider the movies 7-9 fanfictions.
Old Age.
Ahsoka Tano you are joking right
My theory was that he was very old and using the force to hide his age (or slow the aging process down). Getting fried just made his age catch up to him. Luke and Mace weren't scarred by force lightning. Neither was Anakin (episode 2).
That intro cracks me up every time
To be honest it sounds like the author simply watched the scene and tried to put it into words.
In ryse of Skywalker when Rey repels his super force lightning he must have been thinking "nice, my face is gonna be massive!!"
Here one ive thought about that isn't likely but would be interesting .
What if Dooku Grievous Maul Ventress and Savage Opress all teamed up to overthrow the Emporer destroy the Sith and from it create a new order that Dooku wanted to do with Obi Wan? Know this wouldnt be likely but still i find it any intriguing concept :P

"Our purpose?"
I've always theorized that Sidious was the Dark Side incarnated, that his very being was purely of the dark side. The way that sounds, "serves our purpose" it's almost as if the dark side is speaking through Sidious, calling the mortal in which it possess, the tool in which it uses. Sidious, just as every other Sith is the pure, raw power of the dark side and is the person in control of the human Palpatine, a basic concept of the Sith.
Are you threatening me Master Jedi?
I thought everyone knew that’s why his face was like that.
Sith Alchemy.
George Lucas is clearly a student of history. Palpatine seems to be a well put together combination of Hitler, Stalin, Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, Caligula and Diocletian. George also seems to have mirrored historical events when writing about Palpatines plans, for example, Order 66 is an obvious copy of the Night of the Long Knives.
This is very effective, as it makes the events in an otherwise unrealistic fantasy land seem very plausible. The fans who criticised the prequels obviously knew Fuck all about the world around them to not see that!
I love how you focus on the novels
I disagree with that interpretation. He just said he was wearing a MASK. Which then wore off. Becoming his true self. "THE MAN".. Obviously meaning the true form of palpatine is sidious. He says it outright. How do you get that so backwards.? And if your face was being melted I promise that's not what it would look like. That is however an exaggerated Scowl. Which you could imagine Darth Sidious having. And if your face was melted you could not form a scowl on your face at all.
The occipitofrontalis muscles produce the transverse wrinkles across the width of the forehead. And the corrugator supercilii muscles produce vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows above the nose. The procerus muscles cause the nose to wrinkle.
If your face was melted you would not have the ability to do this at all. Let alone at an exaggerated and or buffed out state. As you might imagine if you constantly had a scowl on your face.
Not to mention legends was 100% Canon when this was made.
Fortunately, the truth is revealed in Star Wars Insider:
"Palpatine, who has delved extensively into Sith lore, was using an almost-forgotten technique to hide his true self". "This is an application of the Alchemy skill from the Dark Side Sourcebook (page 13)"
"The real Palpatine is the one who bursts forth at a calculated moment . . . That is when the true person comes out, letting the evil fully manifest itself. The Emperor . . . looks like he does because he's very old and very evil -- it is what he always looked like." [Star Wars Insider 82 (page 58).
"Just as Sith alchemical techniques can be used to make a subject appear more horrific, they can be used to conceal its true appearance".
"TL;DR: Palpatine used Sith Alchemy to disguise himself and then when the lightning deflected off Mace Windu's saber it caused the alchemical spell to break, revealing his true face in the process."
So come on man. I know it's tempting to make up your own Theory. When Star Wars is being so blatantly desecrated. But Revenge Of The Sith is still 100% Canon.
I like you and your videos. Your enthusiasm for Star Wars is always entertaining. And most of the time I totally agree with you. But when you're wrong you're wrong.!!!!
I think it would be appropriate if you came out with a retraction.
And I do appreciate the time and effort you took to make this video. But obfuscating the truth with your own Theory. Does not help or entertain anyone. Thanks.
Gsup7s good shit my boy . I enjoyed reading this . Didn’t know a lot of this stuff . But yea I think this video is completely incorrect and that this is Sidious true form because of like 60 years of being a Sith
@@zerotheg0d330 I appreciate the comment. Good sir.
I thought the exact same when I read the novelization. I thought it was obvious that the face of Sidious was the real one and that he'd simply concealed his darkness so long under his old Palpatine face that as soon as his darkness came out, the Palpatine face was gone. Sidious was what he REALLY looked like.
Yes! Someone who agrees and makes sense of lore. His face melted and accepting it is so out of character to Sidious like he made a boo boo. And saying 60 years or so of being a devotee to the dark side of the force will still keep a humble elderly man appearance? No youd be fucked up. And Sidious is no stranger to alchemy or sith magic. It make sense to hide his true face. This video is bad
I agree that it revealed his true self, but I don't think he always looked like that, I imagine he started to become looking like that like approximately around Episode 1 when he had been exposed to the dark side for a long time already. Then, he used alchemy to recreate/keep how he looked like when he was younger, but of course appropriately aging as he would naturally, while in the background he was deforming more and more. His true looks under his cover probably deformed more and more through out the time between Ep. 1 and Ep. 3.
*HE SHOULD'VE TRIED SPINNING THAT'S A GOOD TRICK!*
Waiting for the intro: “We would be honoured if you would...DO IT!”
Makes total sense, palpi/sidious is exactly the kind of person to shrug off a good ol lighting tan XD
I prefer the look of Return of the Jedi [corrected] compared to the more recent Revenge of the Sith. They did a better job with the mask back in the 1980s.
David Bloyd Do you mean Return of the Jedi?
Yeah. Return of the Jedi.
Yeah, I think that’s mostly because Ian McDiarmid had a thinner face back then, but I agree the difference is really noticeable.
I’ve been annoyed by that as well for a long time but I just thought of it this way: in revenge, his face was freshly burnt. It’s gonna be puffy and pink. Return takes place 23 years later. In that time his wounds healed. He got older so his face thinned out and sagged, and I can’t imagine he got outside much so he turned very pale. No ones face looks the same after 23 years. It made my mind feel better, hope it helps you too
Right? This looked too perfect. Where’s the dripping flesh? Plus bubbles? It JUST happened in this scene
His face should at least be wet it something
this basicly confirms sith allcemy, his spell faded and the mask became the man
It's called a metaphor. The rest of the description describes his face as melting, not anything about a mask. You're taking that line literally and out of context.
Glad to have someone with credibility cut to the answer. I had always read the scene as damage from rebounding lightning, but a few videos referred to it as revealing his face or removing his mask. They shook my confidence enough that I had to get a final answer. Enter SWE and now I know why the mask reference kept coming up and have resettled my mind on why Papa Palps is so pretty.
WOAH he looks so cool with facial hair!! (thumbnail)
I always thought that that fight caused his disfiguring. BUT I think Palpatine caused it to come back on himself.
KiddsockTV interesting idea, I mean he could have always stopped b4 he was disfigured. Plus, for some one who just had there bones melted, he gets up just fine, and in his sith voice, crowns anakin darth vader
I think everyone here is giving sidious too much credit here. I don’t think all of this was planned to go down this way. I think it was more of a happenstance or good fortune that it went down this way for sidious
