    One thing we need to remember about Marilyn Monroe: she was 5'5" tall and 118 lbs. When they took her white dress from The Seven Year Itch and put it on a size 2 mannequin, it wouldn't zip up. Today's size 8 is about a size 16/18 from the 50's, (there is a significant difference because of the vanity sizing we have today). Some years ago, I bought a pattern to sew a dress for my daughter who was a size 2, and her measurements required me to buy her a size 12 dress pattern. Marilyn had a perfect perfect Hourglass figure, but she wasnt a size 16, as we define it today. Sorry, the seamstress in me just popped out, lol! Anyway, cant wait to hear this video!! Here I go...

    What sucks about having an hour glass figure and putting on a fitted dress without zippers is that its so hard to get the smaller waist part over the shoulders or hips. Im always worried that ill rip the seams when i put on dresses if its not strechy.

    I just came across this video this afternoon. And, WOW!! This has so much excellent information on how to dress the hourglass body shape. It's hard to imagine, but I only recently discovered that I'm an hourglass and NOT a straight body type. My mind was quite blown at that moment. I couldn't, at first, figure out how on earth that I didn't know I WAS AN HOURGLASS. I began thinking back to my teen years in the early 1970's and realized that "fashion" emphasized the tall straight figure. The advice was always to dress to look tall, thin and straight. I've spent so many years dressing to look tall, thin and straight that I literally had no idea what my body shape was. Several weeks ago my body shape was revealed through very reliable sources. Now, I know why I was feeling so "squarish" (instead of slim) and thought that nothing fit me right or seemed the right styles. I went through all my clothes, tried them on and got rid of clothing definitely not for my body type. For the first time in years, I'm loving how I look and loving my clothes!

    I’m in my 40ies. Unfortunately cat calling and hormone driven men, throughout my formative years, have taught me to hide my curves. I detest to show any cleavage, I feel self aware with anything too form fitting. I try to hide my chest 100% of the time. My goal is to appear as small chested as possible. Yes to all this esp the jeans and pants section. My main issue is that I have to work at not looking TOO sexy at 70. After losing weight I am a size 10 figure 8 meaning my hip curve starts higher than on the hourglass shape. I cannot wear straight skirts that taper in at the legs or I look tarty so I wear swingy fluid skirts as you show. Fit )in the bust area) and flare (below the waist) looks great on me as do wrap styles that you show. I always try to find v neck tops for my ample bust and for button up shirts often have to add front and back vertical darts at the waist so as not to look too boxy...very easy to do with a basic sewing machine. When heavier I wore boxy tops like you show and I looked 20lbs heavier than I actually was! Great video.

    It is so wonderful to see such a graceful woman like you. Very inspiring to young women to grow into age in an elegant way. Age is just a number. The more we add on years the more sofisticated, graceful and elegant we become. And how we present ourselves is what makes us. Its important to stay put together despite your age, place, occation or status. What women got all are just excuses to stay comfortable in places which arent really comfortable. Its in the way we dress, sit, walk, eat, talk...even sleep. Ladies, dont let yourselves settle just for anything. Enjoy the journey. Become a whole new you every day by adding something new which brings out the best in you.
    Thank you. Your videos helping me alot in my studies. Love you loads 💜

    Shellea, I am 59 yrs old, in full menopause, and I am an hourglass. You exactly nailed all the issues with an hourglass figure. I also have a bad knee and I tend to wear very low heels, not flats, but maybe a two inch heel at most and I am 5'4". The best sizing for me is a 14W. One trick I have found from you is if you have a pair of jeans that are snug on the thigh but have a good flare on the bottom invest in an asymetric top to break that line across the largest part of your thighs and wear a pointed toe or almond toe shoe/boot to elongate the leg. You did a video on this type of thing a while ago and it works every time. I like tailored clothes the best on me but a little flow also works well.

    I'm just loving this series, Schellea! I definitely have an hourglass figure as far as shoulders/hips/small waist, however I have a small bust so I don't know if that still qualifies as hourglass ;) And as I mentioned in the last video I have those large upper arms (my sausage arms as I lovingly refer to them lol). My calves are also thick. I think it's a genetic thing because my mother has the same problem with thick calves, even when she was younger and quite thin she could never find fashionable boots to fit her calves. Back in the day they didn't make boots for thicker calves like they do nowadays. I chalk it all up to our German heritage, we are hearty German women!

    • @hobbypotter
      @hobbypotter 5 років тому +1

      My daughters sound like your shape dilemma. One is a pear the other is an hourglass. Both flatter chested. The difference is the width if the shoulder (not the actual bust). If the shoulder width is equal to the hips, it is an hourglass. If the shoulder is smaller than the hips, it is a pear. They both have challenges buying jeans for exactly the reasons she stated! This is an excellent series of videos!

I’m 5’4”, and a size 10/12 but can look much heavier due to draping, cuts and shapes. I also live in a tropical climate and it’s taken all the fun out of buying clothing. Flip flops, T-shirts and shorts. I despise shorts, and find myself I’m boho style dresses and shirts. I miss dressing for four seasons and having a closet full of variety. Yay! Thank you Schellea! I'll be trying these ideas. It is pretty hard to find stuff that isn't boxy or made for women without much chest. Luckily, I sew. So sometimes I buy huge clothes with lovely fabric and restyle them to better suit me. I used to make all my own clothes, but it takes a lot of time. BTW, I have found the Seven7 brand jeans have some styles that fit hourglass figures. Lucky find a thrift shop once. As some people commented here, sometimes we don't want to flaunt the curves, but still don't want to look boxy. It is a bit of a dilemma, but it is possible to be curvy and tasteful, too.

    I’m doing the opposite. I hate drawing attention to my bust and I hate my tummy so I tend towards styles that I think draw attention away from those areas. That means looser tops and leggings. My legs are slim and I’m size 8 (US sizing) so not huge but I hate my curves. Sigh. And I wouldn’t be caught dead tucking anything in ever. The struggle is real.

Every once in a while someone will comment about why I am so dressed up. Unfortunately, I can’t really wear a lot of suits because they can really make me look boxy.

    Thank you very much for that explanation. I have always dressed with an eye to these shapes, but not really knowing why I looked better in certain styles. I have always had an hour glass figure with the tiniest waist, but at 65, I have a belly. Not that I don't work out, I still do, but I am post menopausal so that belly is hard to lose. If I look straight on at my figure, I still look OK, I can still see the hour glass shape, however when I turn sideways it is down hill from there. I get a bit depressed with that stubborn tummy. Thanks again.
