Is Warner Bros Acquiring Paramount? What Happens to Star Trek & Others If Streaming Services Merge?

- Hey Everyone and Welcome to What Did I Miss, where today I have a very interesting story about the future of Paramount studios, the company the produces Star Trek. Which is that the executive team at Warner Bros, who also produce the streaming service MAX, are in early discussions to merge their two companies. This comes after it was revealed earlier this year that Paramount would likely be looking for a buyer given the fact that they have been unable to make a dent in the streaming service wars with their option, Paramount Plus. So first I am going to discuss the story and then I will talk about which franchises would likely be affected by this merger if it were to happen, and how this would affect one franchise specifically, Star Trek.
#startreknews #startrek #paramountplus
I purchased shares in both companies recently. Mostly out of curiosity to see where this all will lead financially for both. But I'm seriously wondering how Anti-Trust rules may come into play here.
And being a STAR TREK fan since the late 60s, I really don't want David Zaslav anywhere near that franchise. If Paramount were really smart, they should just license all the "ST" properties back to Netflix. That's how "ST" got rejuvenated interest almost two decades ago. Especially "DS9".
Keep making Star Trek episodes and they will have a customer FOR LIFE. Cancel S.T. and you will have a boycoter for life. (I'm still not over Firefly)
If this means I get to see a Vulcan Green Lantern on screen in any way shape or form, I’m down!!!!!
Combine CBS and CNN? Total disaster for CBS.
Total disaster for CBS News if the fools running WBD try to do the same thing to it that they did to CNN. They cratered that network’s ratings trying to make it more GOP friendly. Nothing at all to worry about for fans of CBS Sports or its primetime entertainment lineup.
Man, if Teddy Roosevelt was in office, these giant mergers wouldn’t have been allowed from the start.
It's mind boggling that B5 could technically be a Paramount show (ironic) and DS9 a WB show (weird). Just hope the future of Trek will be in good hands. Netflix saving Prodigy was a good sign.
considering 30 year old TNG reruns outperform Discovery, overall acquisition, would be a win. just at an artificially inflated price. a streaming merger did help The Orville greatly when it went from solely being part of Fox for the first 2 seasons, Hulu for the first half of its 3rd season/year, before also being branched into Disney+ for far greater viewing numbers. the concept of exclusives, hurt the streaming company. people just wait til the show is fully released for the year, hop in 1 month, wathc the entire season, which are significantly shorter these days, 8-10 episodes, and call it quits after the month is over, watching 1-2 episodes a week if not outright binging the show they want to watch. they'll then maybe dabble in other stuff, but not really get hooked. then jump ship to another streaming service for a month. rinse & repeat in cycles.
TNG is my favorite over all I was 10 when it came out on tv
I don’t have enough money to subscribe to all of the streaming services.
go p2p
Star Trek: Legacy please! No Starfleet Academy 90201.
They made Klingons do a musical and you want me to give them a chance?
Well the kliggers have always been such dramaqueens so......!
Star Trek is a dumpster fire these days. Total travesty what these morons have done to the franchise.
if the merger happens where are the cbs shows going i wonder
I suppose that depends on if they are just buying the Paramount portion of the company or all of ViacomCBS
Star Trek, Peacemaker, and Harley Quinn on the same streaming service? Where do I sign up?
Please NOOOOOO! Max is a joke! I cancelled it after they cancelled, then removed Raised By Wolves. Warner Brothers in control of Star Trek would be an absolute disaster for the franchise! I for one will NEVER subscribe to Max again! Ow, and the price would be beyond outrageous!
I didnt think warner bros had the money to merge with Paramount, i would rather they went to a private equity firm
Well it sounds like a smart move on Paramount Plus but I was actually kind of hoping that Paramount plus and peacock would merge mainly because they're essentially equivalent in size and neither one are really big enough to compete with the Giants of streaming where if they were to merge they just might be big enough to compete at least with Netflix I know I personally am not as big a fan of Netflix as some people are.
I do wish that series would move back to a 22-24 episode series
I miss this as well. There also used to be a new season each year, rather than the oft-uncertain and multiple-year-long waits that are common today. People will say that what we get today is of a higher quality, but I see nothing wrong with the quality of The Next Generation or DS9. In fact, I think that pre-streaming Trek was of vastly higher quality overall.
Where ever Star Trek goes I go
If Amazon revives Stargate like they are hinting at, this could bring about a new era in the rivalry between the three Stars: Star Wars on Disney, Star Trek on this new merger with WB, and Stargate on Amazon! They could easily build up three platform here!
If the competition leads to a race to the most woke shows, they are doomed.
Zaslav: Ok, Star Trek... How much money have you made in the last few years...
Kurtzman: ummm
Zaslav: So since 2017 with the release of Discovery... You've not made a dime??? You're all fired... Next... Now Tom, explain your last movie's box office performance...
Nooo, i love the paramount franchise, i don't want it to go
Nah, their effects suck. Marvel should pick it up
so Disney... Marvel is owned by Disney. no fuqqin' thank you.
There was a rumor a few months ago that Discovery was trying to dump WB. So this new rumor is crazy. I wish Paramount would just rethink Paramount + or give it up and move back to Netflix and Amazon for their shows and movies.
Also, then what was the point of selling The CW
IF Warner Bros / Discovery outright buy paramount and then merge with Disney, you could have both Marvel and DC under the same umbrella with Super Hero crossovers from both IP's.
I hope Netflix buys all of Star Trek
No. Terrible quality and mass produce for the dumb masses
Discovery destroyed HBO’s quality with reality show crap. Not looking forward to this.
F*********** YA...I love WB & buying Paramount ... WD Gonna get f*n HUGE & is right buyer to mixed up their products togther HELL F*N ya ..... if i was WB just leave HBO & that stupid Discovery ...open up their own WD/Paramount streaming service , ooohh I would the first ONE TO SIGNED UP AD free version ...Hell ya 👌✌👍
Warner/Discovery getting Paramount means that we'll get "Naked and Afraid: Qo'noS", or "Gold Rush: Quark's Claim"... ;-P
Actually, if Paramount didn't pour so much money into Star Trek: Discovery, they would have been alright
I don't care who buys what just bring back my ST Discovery !!!
Kinda figured this would happen. They are both staggering with film and tv activities.
I thought the Saudis were buying Paramount?
Well considering the Paramount Plus app sucks for usability I think it would be a win
Paramount doesn't own Shrek or kung fu panda universal studios does
I subscribe to both so it would just be one less bill for me.
However, I don't like the idea of limiting competition.
I think that the more competition; The better the options and quality for the consumer;Which will drive the market up.
Another dumpster-fire in the making. This has been going on for so long that I'm no longer disappointed. SMH.
Star Trek would be well suited at SkyDance Studios seeing they have co-produced recent films with bad robot too , would not want Star Trek to go to Warner Bros, Paramount must not be allowed to die.
Well get ready for the loss of 80% of Paramount's back catalog because Zaslav will bury all those shows and movies as a tax dodge.
paramount sucks because even with paid service there are unskippable minute long ads
Wouldn’t it be cool if Universal also got in the merger and Universal also got access to Star Trek franchise and DC franchise Universal studios could redesign the Marvel attractions in to DC attractions and make a Star Trek attraction to rival Disney’s Star Wars attraction
There is no "Warner Brothers" anymore, it's been merged with Discovery and the company now has all three names.
There are just too many streaming services. That may sound like a good thing, but it's not.
As long as it isn't freakin' Disney.
why the hell are we still using neilsons?
All this streaming services are killing streaming but also shows. In France, Star Trek has changed of streaming services several times in the last years, and I am not even sure it is possible to watch all ST with just one subscription. So in 10 years I will buy the integral of the shows in BR 4k if physical media still exist and if climate change does not make watching a show... futile.
it will be the end of star trek
look at what they did to dc
This is a great idea
Paramount doesn’t own any distribution rights to Indiana Jones 5 and beyond, as Disney recently specifically paid Paramount to get those distribution rights. So, the only Indy products they have are the original three films plus Crystal Skull. They don’t even have distribution rights to the Young Indy shows, since those were made using ABC, which Disney owns.
Disney also owns Dominique Fortune an adventurer from the 1930's who isn't an archeologist, but more of an adventurer / secret agent.
Disney owns Lucas. The merger makes them look better for when they are sold to universal within the next few years.
Indiana Jones is NOT owned by Paramount it's owned by Disney/ LucasFilms
@What did I Miss... - I sincerely doubt Warner Brothers will be buying Paramount or Star Trek or any variation of that. In fact, I fully expect Warner Brothers to start doing things to stay afloat as there was a report released last week showing that they now have a 60% probability of bankruptcy. I would expect them to try to focus on cost cutting measures within their own organization first before moving outwards to try to acquire additional content that is currently undervalued (Trek) and try to exploit that to generate additional revenue as going after Paramount golden goose (Trek) will not come cheap.
Don't mess with my Star Trek!
You tell 'em!
Just more reasons to stock up on physical media (or keep what you have) people. Because once the needs of the many (to watch tv shows, movies, etc) are owned by the few or the one we are the ones who will suffer. It is logical.
Brother, I am hopeful like you. But judging by the way Warner Bros DC manages, great chaos awaits us, fault J.J. I wouldn't be surprised if Abrams did something completely different instead of canceling the series. Cancel existing projects. j.j. I wouldn't be surprised if they make TV series and movies that also take place in the Abrams universe. But they will turn off all kinds of Paramount Plus content and put it at Max.
find a place and stay there. I'm tired of getting new subscriptions to different services. or here's an idea create one specific service just for trek. you could call it treker or Trekkie or to honor the great bird of the galaxy (gene Roddenberry) call it Roddenberry. just my thoughts.
first of all yes, probably moving to max, but it is NOT an acquisition, it is a merger, they are different.
what will happen to paramount plus Canada if that merger go's true? WB (hbo) don't stream in Canada its Crave who own the right to hbo show
Maybe they can work a deal with the merge and force them to trash the trek fan fiction ban, so many good shows sitting on shelves unreleased because of greed.
More and more streaming services need to merge.
Too many to watch… better all together.
I Hope That if Warner Bros Acquires Paramount I Hope it does not Take Down Star Trek Section 31 Movie.
pfff section 31 is supposed to be a mystery organization. and should remain that way. we dont need canon movies and shows for them. sec 31 should remain a mystery enigma. not corner itself into "canon" rules, logic, and story. it was the one grace the franchise had, the fandom found to be tolerable enough, without having to dive into stupid multiverse crap that other, more lazy writing has to resort too.
Not to mention, they could take lower decks and send them into the adults swim pool
You had a more clarified view of this news and that I like.
Given how MAX has brutally trimmed back their Science Fiction offerings in the past two years, Star Trek would have very little support with Warner Brother's executives...
well... 30 year old TNG reruns outperforms current discovery episodes. the show is done. and finished. that would be a win for them. DS9 has similar pulling 83% of Discovery's viewership numbers. that show is also done. Discovery itself, has 1 season left, then its done, and likely to fall off. but its done. SNW and lower decks are the only thing on the table right now with running green lights. Animation is getting cheaper and cheaper to produce, so thats another win. the only major cost would be SNW, in acquisition. The Grand Nagus would approve.
Perhaps we can get some Star Trek that’s worth watching. TNG was the last Star Trek that was actually good and Enterprise was the last Star Trek that was even watchable. Discovering Star Crap and Pisscard were abominations. Most of SNW was badly written and poor portrayed with stupid plots. It was less Star Trek and more the CW in space. Modern “entertainment” sucks.
I haven't watch ST since it went to pay services. Good luck yu' all.
Pluto is free
Both companies are doomed, they are merging just to stay alive. They went woke now going broke. Paramount by pissing off the OG Trek fans and not inspiring any new ones to tune in. WB with their crappy DC superhero movies lack of focus on things that could make them money. Boils down, you don't entertain the masses left and right, you are going to pay for it in the long run. Like Spock famously said, "The Needs of the Many outweigh the needs of the Few."
Lol this guy
If you do not have Apple, how can you access Star Trek if that happens? I would rather see Netflix buy Paramount. I am not to buy Apple anything so hopefully a merger will not shut me out from Star Trek.
The merger would be between Paramount Global and Warner Brothers Discovery. It has nothing to do with Apple.
@@thomashong2938 Thanks !
apple tv is something you can watch without apple products... its a streaming service... android tv, sony tv, and many traditional cable companies even have the option for a normal digital tv box or an apple tv box, for high def tv viewing.
I HOPE NOT. I LOVE PARAMOUNT PLUS & THE WB SCREWED UP TOO MANY SHOWS.
I will never pay HBO or Max, even if my love of Star Trek wants me to. No way.
That would be a bummer. I will never subscribe to any version of HBO for many reasons, so that would be the end of my Star Trek experience.
Star Trek is now “Stinky Crap”, I have not watched any Stinky Crap after the first episode of human identifying as a Vulcan smarter than a real Vulcan.
You destroyed Star Wars by supporting Stinky Crap!
WBD is like the fourth or fifth company to meet with Paramount. While WBD says the company has funds to make purchases I don’t believe it. WBD is deeply in debt and selling streaming rights to Netflix to make money and canceling projects along with lay-offs. I don’t see the share holders allowing another big purchase. Paramount might sell streaming rights to WBD for some shows, but why spend the money Netflix is paying them to stream WBD content? I really think this is a no go. And if it happens WBD will be out of business in five years.
Netflix should merge with paramount
This is Warner Bros. here, so there's a chance Section 31 will be be shot and edited, then shelved never to be seen again.
Is the typically confusing Star Trek saga that everybody has grown to know and hate
