I actually got married to my wife because of Firefly in a major way. Entered college, had no car at the time and needed a ride to school. During orientation, the mother of my wife turned around and talked to me. We were of the same nationality , so she was excited to talk to me. She introduced me to my wife, and gave me her number so I can "take care" of her. Anyway, my wife at the time was a VERY timid person - never spoke to another boy , and was very anti-social. On the first day of school, I called her early - and went to I-hop, where she didn't even take a bite of her omelet (as it was her first dining experience with a guy lol). On the way back, I was a bit discouraged by how difficult this ride situation was going to be... super awkward, understandably. As we got near her car, on the back window was a large sticker that read "Serenity", in that firefly font. I was so excited, because I had just finished that series a week ago, and was a massive fan. We were able to talk about something we both loved and while it was still difficult for her to open up, it gave us something to talk about , and eventually ended up dating her, then marrying her- we've been together 10 years, married for 6, and we still watch firefly together.
I'm a 67 year old Sci-Fi fan and I remember being glued to my Black & White TV during the first episodes of Star Trek. And I never forget the first time I saw Firefly I thought to myself this is the best Sci-Fi I've seen since. You've got to keep flying, you know Mal would never have given up.
Wow, you're old, I'm only 63;) and remember the salt-sucker episode very well, it kinda scared me a bit as a kid. Have you seen The Expanse? It had the very rare successful fan revolt and is probably the most realistic sf show ever produced.
@@mechtheist yes i did enjoy the the realistic effects but, i couldn’t bring myself to enjoy the sad truth about how our civilization doesn’t ever learn to treat each other better. i like my fantasy about someday improving our behavior towards each other. i guess Firefly had some of that but there was still a good moral base for the primary characters . The Expanse doesn’t have any positive outcome. no happy ending. and that’s sad.
I'm about to turn 60. I'm also probably the youngest person here who watched the original Star Trek as it first aired. I think Disney has the capability of doing something very special with Firefly, but a major factor would be getting as many of the original cast members as they could. I'd be very wary of "Firefly: The Next Generation"
One of the biggest problems with the Firefly series is how so few people actually knew of its existence. By this I mean people who would have become great fans never knew of its existence until long after it was canceled. My stepfather was 1 of these people. He had no clue that this show existed until I showed it to him on Netflix. When I did he was upset that it was canceled before he had ever known it even existed. Also I don't think the magic of the Firefly series can be recaptured. The culture has changed far too much. We will have to wait until another paradigm shift in the culture for it to happen again.
TV networks seem to have a very poor history with the Sci-Fi genre, as the executives running them are so conservative & worry that the shows will scare the viewers, so their reaction was to broadcast them sometime around midnight in the middle of the week, often prioritising sporting events to precede them! Invariably that meant you had to stay up late to watch it, or at the very least start the recording on your VHS machine to ensure you don't miss an episode!
@eswielinga3064 My stepfather was actually in disbelief. He didn't find out about it until 2012. That's with the original channel it aired on being one that he tends to watch. So he was watching the channel it aired on while it was airing. Yet it was coming on at about 12 or 1AM. It's very much as if the channel itself was conspiring to keep possible fans from finding the show. At least in his case, they succeeded spectacularly. I only found out about it because I was working the late shift and usually took 3 to 4 hours to wind down before I could go to sleep. So I was coming home every day and surfing the channels winding down, and it popped up. It was 1 AM.
@@stevie-ray2020Too conservative? I don't know about that, showed Firefly to my fundie Christian brother and he adored it! Reality is we're far too woke now to have a love story between a woman and a man who constantly calls her bad words. Firefly was 100% about amazing characters; the setting and plot were secondary. But the current crop of Hollywood writers are far too obsessed with sexual identification, race, demonizing cis, white males, and policing their own speech to write one truly complex, interesting character, let alone 7. You can't even use the word "woman" these days without deeply offending most Hollywood writers. These people are far more concerned with identity than making art! We are truly living in the age of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence," sadly.
Like every Firefly fan, I don’t know how many times I’ve watched the TV series and Movie. It made me understand what timeless classic really means. The thought of Disney making anything related to Firefly is scary.
@@quertianmotto, Incorrect, Disney would add their “woke” agenda message to it like they are doing to everything else. That doesn’t belong everywhere, especially on an independent minded show like Firefly. It would ruin it because it doesn’t belong in that world.
I've been asked maybe 100 times what my favorite sci-fi series is and my answer is always the same. "I have seen every episode of Star Trek, and all it's descendants, I've seen The Mandalorian, I've seen many great sci-fi series, but I know every word of every episode of Firefly, and the same for Serenity, and I aim to misbehave."
@@obelus5985 Unfortunately, The Mandalorian recycles and reuses plots and plot conveniences from so many other films, and you can predict character deaths ages in advance... Firefly told fresh stories. I'd love to enjoy The Mandalorian, but watching it feels a lot like playing a remastered game... it's shiny and new, but very little has changed on the inside.
As a 22 year old, relatively young fan.. the canceled continuation of Firefly hurts more than it should. I’m truly passionate about this universe and want to see more!
My boss on my 2015/2016 deployment for Operation inherent resolve was a huge fan. When all of the flight medics sat down one day we realized that he built his team around the crew of the Serenity. It blew his mind when we put it to him but now he can't unsee it. We would sit down and watch the series and film together. We even got "You can't take the Sky from me" patches made for our flight helmets. Got more made when the pilots and crew chiefs wanted them and handed a few out to Aussie Browncoats that ran the Role 2/ Forward Surgical team. That patch never left my flight helmet and flew every mission with it until I had to stop flying. Keep flying
This comment makes me so happy... I saw Serenity before the series - I was in Afghanistan when it was on TV and missed it completely, but during my two Iraq deployments, I introduced several others to it. To read another group of Medevac folks are keeping it going... well, that's just shiny. Fly safe (and remember to pull the damn inlet plugs... THAT is a trend even us retired backseaters are seeing and going "WTAF?!")
There was never a person that did not fall in love with this show when I introduced it to them. The song touches people in a way that is personal for each person
Mine has always been "It's time to be a bad guy" I had a shirt made up with that quote, and wear it when playing some characters in role playing games.
I am a grown ass, large, bald, bearded, 6’2 man in my 40s and the overwhelming nostalgia this brought forth had me crying. Good lord I loved this show and the fan base it gathered. This was before companies learned to artificially manufacture grassroots hype. This was all natural, baby. I remember being at the Chicago comic con a couple years after this was cancelled and just gathering larger and larger groups of people to talk about Firefly. Thanks for making this video, it was definitely shiny.
Considering that Disney lately seems to be where once great IP’s now go to die, it’s very troubling that they now own Firefly. If they have it their way, the entire crew becomes part of the ever growing alphabet monster while the entire Firefly universe becomes queer. Marvel and Star Wars will never be the same...irrevocably damaged by the identity politics and people who don’t even like it. WHY? Would rather they just left it alone than have it get butchered and permanently marred by some purple haired Twatter freak. If they can successfully stay to the canon, then I’m all for it. But I highly doubt Disney has the ability...or the desire. Not like any of these other big companies wouldn’t do the same; look at Paramount with Halo, and Amazon with Lord of the Rings (and Wheel of Time). They haven’t even been fully released yet but one has to only look at what HAS been released. Pure SHIT...
My family hates sci-fi but we were looking for something to watch and I played the first episode of Firefly for them, and asked after if they wanted more. Ended up marathoning the whole series.
I actually knew somebody once who was not wowed by Firefly. Didn't hate it, just wasn't into it. I erased that person out of my life, because who needs idiots for friends.
As much as I would LOVE to see more Firefly coming, I dread the possibility for it to go the way other great franchises went, namely Star Trek and Star Wars. I'd rather see it buried in grace then being mutated into something almost unrecognizable.
I hate to say it, but in a lot of ways it worked out perfectly. The story basically parallels what happened irl. Good idea, screwed over by powers that didnt understand it, and the "defeated" never really letting the fight go. And eventually getting a few good punches themselves. And even if they didnt win overall, theyre still out there fighting (and watching/reading). I cant imagine what the franchise would have become w full and competent studio support, might have been awesome, but also might not have generated that never say die browncoat spirit thats keeping it alive.
@@blackc1479 This is the problem...Big government "the Alliance" does not support the "Little guy" winning any battle. The only way that Firefly could have still been on the air, would have been if they had been crap. You get a crap show not giving the fans anything to grab ahold of, it lasts for years, you give them something to fight for, it's gone in a season...or less.
@@blackc1479 I think that the cancellation of the show is actually what built it up in people's minds. Don't get me wrong, I definitely enjoyed the show, but I think that (because it got cut short) it developed a romanticised status based on 'what it could have been', the reality is that if we got more seasons it's not likely they would've lived up to most people's expectations.
The Browncoat community is one of the tightest knit fandoms in all of science fiction. We hold an annual event called The Browncoat Ball and it’s based upon the episode Shindig. There’s usually about 150-200 of us there every year and it’s the coolest event ever.
How does one go about joining up? I happen to have a coat of a particularly brownish color, and been in love with the show since I stumbled upon it on accident as a kid.
@@CRACKERJACK439 If you’re on Facebook you can just search the term Browncoat and you might just find that there’s a group near you. Here in Pennsylvania we have many groups. Besides the Browncoat Ball I mentioned in my original comment, there’s also an event called CSTS (Can’t Stop the Serenity) where there’s a showing of Serenity and all proceeds go to Joss Whedon’s charity Equality Now. Plus there are other get togethers we throw like camping trips and bowling nights. I hope this helps. P.S. I too have a coat of a brownish color... it was on sale. Edit: Browncoat Ball tickets are now on sale. Just type Browncoat Ball into your search engine of choice and you will find the website. This year we’re limited to100 attendees due to hotel restrictions.
OMG, what a fantastic idea! I ALWAYS never wanted to wear a fluffy pink dress like Kaylee's! I would absolutely dawn myself in that pink monstrosity to attend a Shindig. 😁

A few years ago now, I purchased Serenity without ever having heard of Firefly. Spoke to a coworker after watching the movie and was told about the Firefly cancellation. Luckily, I found Firefly on the shelf and made my purchase. After viewing Firefly, I found it hard to believe that it was cancelled. But, now that both are in my collection, I can have a numb butt weekend whenever I wish. That proved to be a godsend throughout the pandemic. I have enjoyed watching both to many times to count (only have four limbs) and will continue now that I'm retired. Hats off to the cast and crew for all of their efforts.
I also was one of those people who had no idea this series even existed until after it was already cancelled… I heard about it when a friend at work asked if I was going watch serenity and I didn’t even know what it was.. He lent me his DVD box set and I wanted it 3 or 4 times back to back then went to the movies with him and his wife and saw serenity. I could not believe this show was cancelled after watching it. The fact that Disney has the license is horrible.
I fell in love with all the characters in Firefly immediately. I recorded every episode & shared them with my friends. Great scripts, perfect cast. Others were sharing episodes of Firefly at sci-fi clubs & it’s fanbase just kept growing after it was cancelled. Everyone I know owns the entire series & the movie “Serenity”. I’m still a fan of everyone involved in making “Firefly”💕
That's so cool. I wished we had thought at the time to record them as well, but sadly no. Can you help me with how many actual episodes there are?? It's hard for me to believe there are so few listed........I seem to remember watching that show for a while and we "binge" watched in there as well....... I want to say there were a lot more episodes that somehow disappeared. Thanks...
i saw the show and as a reader of sfi novels it were unintressting and when they started to kick the "ugly actors since they dont appeal to a young audience or shareholders it were pretty much dead and soon it were just that
I saw the movie Serenity and later found out that there used to be tv series based on it. Then, after watching an episode or three I found the series on Itunes for some crazy price like $9.99 or something around there and snagged it up. And after seeing As Summer Glau kick off on some booty I later discover Terminated: Sarah Connor Chronicles and purchased that series as well ...I think on Itunes for that one too. Or did I get it on DVD? I think I have it on Itunes but ai haven't watched either shows in a good while. I like to let them rest for a couple years before I go back and watch them because by then I've forgotten some of it and it makes it much more interesting.
How deep is the admiration for Firefly? My very good friend and neighbor named their son Malcom (they call him Mal all the time). To this day Serenity remains one of my favorite SiFi movies, along with Galaxy Quest and a couple others. I never saw any Fire Fly episodes prior to watching the movie but it didn't matter because Serenity is an excellant movie with a fine cast, well written and directed.
My daughter name is Zoe, and yes, it because of Firefly. The only reason why my other two kids aren´t named Mal and Simon is because they already were named before we knew Firefly existed.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I remember seeing Serenity at the theatre for the first time. I never even heard about a show called Firefly and that the movie is based on it. But I immediately fell in love with the story, the world, and above all else... the cast. Since then, I've watched Firefly and Serenity countless times. Since it has only a limited number of episodes, it's perfect when you get in the mood, you can watch it all in one sitting. Damm... getting in the mood again :)
You described my story, only I didn't see Serenity at theater, but at home, but everything else is the same.. I didn't fully understand movie, but after I saw the series, I enjoyed movie a lot more..
As a person who grew up in the 60sand 70s, the original Star Trek was an obsession to me as it was to millions... It was only a few years ago that I purchased the Firefly series on UA-cam. It INSTANTLY became my most beloved science fiction series..... Firefly. in my opinion, absolutely and utterly dwarfs Star Trek or any other science fiction series ever made.... ... It is truly a bitter shame that Firefly and Serenity didn't become the greatest and most successful science fiction series of all time. As a browncoat, my way of reliving the joy of that single glorious season of Firefly is getting to watch reactors on UA-cam experiencing "The Verse", crew and joy of the series for their first time. It's 2023 now and I've yet to see a single person not fall hopelessly in love with the series..... It truly was a masterpiece that should've go on for years.... They never should've taken the sky away. 🏆 ❤ 🎥
Ditto, everything you just said. Except I bought the box set off Amazon. That was my last purchase of anything Fox. And it was the last show I watched on Fox. There will never be another Firefly, Ron Glass passed, and they killed Wash off. The absolute two top reasons I loved it so much. I'm still gutted.
Firefly was a saving grace for me. Was in a terrible situation for an extended period. I was only able to get to sleep when watching these. Went through two or three a night for a good five months. I love this show!
I was about to go to bed and found this, and could not stop watching. For me, the story is just as epic as Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek and many others. Loved the show and the movie.
At least once a year I take a weekend and rewatch Firefly and Serenity, it's a damn shame it was cancelled I'm just happy we got some closure with the movie.
@@ThePopcast I have NEVER seen that level of chemistry before or since. While I LOVE the Expanse and think it is the best sci-fi show I've ever seen, from detail to detail and with so many layers of subtle nuance, political overtones without being preachy etc,... I still think Firefly/Serenity was the best actor chemistry I've ever seen, and a close second in terms of those same beloved details, and significantly funnier or more entertaining second by second certainly. I always tell my Firefly fan friends to also watch it. They got me in to Firefly, and I love it, so I always try to return the favor.
The thing that I remember most about Firefly is that the "intensity" of the characters came through. I was able to identify with then being "up against it" and push as hard as they could. Unlike so many other shows that were just actors playing roles. I loved River. For instance, I actually understood her feelings in seeing a branch of a tree for the first time.
I missed Firefly when it originally aired and remember not being able to find it anywhere when when i finally heard about it so i had to sail the high seas to get it. I absolutely fell in love with it. When the movie came out i was stoked and loved that too. Since then I've bought the box set on Blu-ray and digital to make up for it. It's an annual rewatch for me.
I was almost in tears in the damn intro. I just finished my Nathan Fillion marathon and I love how many projects he's in that there are cameos from his other projects. Tons of Firefly references in Castle, sooo many Castle actor cameos in The Rookie (plus a pretty big Firefly cameo). Destiny and Destiny 2 (up til a certain point) was a great way to hear Nathan Fillion and Gina Torres together again.
I'm really old, 74, so I don't remember well in what order I became aware of "the verse" but it barely matters. I love everything I've ever seen of it and them and frankly it's mainly because of the coherent and compelling energy of the cast. I recognize even the best actors must have good scripts and direction but the bottom line is that while I wouldn't watch the cast read telephone books, at least for more than a few minutes, I would most definitely watch any adventure Joss Whedon creates with that cast acting it out. Done and done.
I was one of the 4.7 million that stayed home every Friday night that fall to watch the show. Shocked and saddened at it's demise at the hands of poor network decision making, after the show ended I got rid of my TV, and have not had one since. Firefly, my most favorite and also the last TV show I've ever followed. I've been a browncoat as far as mass media ever since. Keep on flying.
@@tessierashpoolmg7776 the book we know actually murdered the original after fighting in the civil war and took his identity. Realizing what he had done he turned to what was left of Christianity and became Sheppard Book for the rest of his days. He mentions some of this in serenity while near the AA gun before the ravager fight
The cast and character developed, the script, themes, humor, tone, art production….one of my favorite of any type of series. So glad I got the Firefly and Serenity-watching them now. ❤️❤️❤️
I loved this show, it was the very best sifi show of all time, bar none. It was so realistic. Was very very disappointed when they cancelled. I bought all the dvd's and continue to view them.
Probably, for me, the highlight of the episodes was when the crew all sat around the table eating, joking and jibing, it just hit a nerve with me as so realistic, I often thought that in some of the scenes, there really was no written dialog, just the cast being themselves, talking and goofing off. It really pulled me into their world as no other series or movie has done before or since.
I’ll always remember how I discovered Firefly, or should I say Serenity. I didn’t have cable so I hadn’t been aware of the show. .One night I went to the video store and was about to leave not having found anything interesting to watch when my eye landed on Serenity. I looked at the cover, read the brief synopsis and thought heck, why not ? I could go for some shitty sci-fi. Needless to say it exceeded my expectations and I was blown away by this little movie. I only found out about the TV show because I bothered to watch the extras on the disc. Next day I went out and bought the series on DVD, binge watched the whole thing and have been cursing Fox ever since for being too stupid to understand how good this show was.
Wow, I knew of the series first so it is interesting to hear your perspective. Sounds like Joss nailed it from that perspective! I agree. It is so sad what gets the production money and what doesn't. I am sure thousands of nerds like me could have made a better version of The Last Jedi for free, but they paid $400 million dollars (including promotion) for a beautiful artistic visual experience added as a veneer to the dumbest story I could imagine.
For me I discovered Firefly completely by accident!! In 2010, I was online talking to somebody in a email chat about movies I had met through a post I'd made on Craig's List (of all places) Rants and Raves section a week earlier. I had been talking about how Hollywood sucked and how there was "no good science fiction shows out", and added that I had just seen Enterprise for the first time!! The person I was talking too, asked me "Have you been living under a rock?" (jokingly) and I said "No I was going through a bitter divorce from my second wife in 2001 to 2004 and I had been homeless since 2002 till a friend had allowed me to move in with them, but hadn't had cable in about three years!" And that is when the online friend I was talking to said "Then you don't know about Firefly, huh?" And my reply was "Firefly, what is that about?" and the only answer I got was "Dude you HAVE TO SEE THIS SHOW!"!!! I dug around on the internet for it, and nobody had it!! What information I read about it (by 2010) was so out of date and spotty at best! Then I stumbled across a copy of the DVDs and sat and watched it (in the correct timeline order) and was immediately hooked on it!! I watched it over and over and over again!! And just went I couldn't watch it again, I would throw a couple episodes on and watch it again, in order, out of order, and in between watching episodes of Castle (oddly enough)!! I fell in love with the show.....then six months had gone by and I dug around the internet looking for MORE Firefly and that is when I learned that it had been canceled!! BUT I stumbled upon a website that talked about a 2005 movie Serenity and stated that it was "the continuing story of Firefly"!! I got my hands of a copy of that and watched the movie about 30 times!! Firefly transformed me, inspired me, changed me!! Alas I came to realize Firefly was sort of about my life!! Constantly fighting just to get by and keep flying!! And no matter how hard I tried things never went as they should go or I planned....exactly how Firefly works!!
Same here! I saw the advertisements for Serenity and thought, “this movie looks great! I can’t wait to see it!” I actually waited until it came out on DVD and then discovered there was a series. Streamed it when it came available and then bought the BlueRay when it came out. Break it out 2-3 times a year and watch the series over a weekend plus the movie. I would LOVE to see more of what Whedon would have done had there been more seasons.
I was introduced to this universe in 2006. I just graduated navy bootcamp and was in my barracks for A-school. It was the weekend and I had nothing to watch at night. I went down the hall to my friend Perkins and told him I need something to watch and make it good. He tried to sell me on this show Firefly and tried to give me the history blah blah blah. I told him I wasn't interested in a show. So then he started telling me about Serenity the movie of the show firefly and I only half listened to him. I went down the hall to my room, climbed in my rack, and put it in my portable DVD player. I was enthralled by the movie from start to finish. Even going in cold, knowing none of the characters, the histories, relationships, or anything about the show I felt I followed along just fine. I did feel I missed out on some back story and show specifics. But the movie had a fast enough pace that I kept up with it enough to love the movie. I watched it again as soon as I finished it. The next day, I went and returned the movie and wanted to ask him about the show he said it was from. He had the dvds and I watched it right away. Holy shit I was amazed by this show. I couldn't believe this was everything I ever wanted in a show without knowing it. Even the episodes that could be considered "filler" are just more time that you get to spend with the crew and on the ship or on a job. It really makes you feel a part of the crew as you watch it... I have been a Brown Coat ever since. I have introduced so many people to this universe since. They have gone on to be both either casual viewers that felt it was a good watch or a massive brown coat themselves. For about the first 5-6 years or so since being introduced to this I have watched it at lease twice a year. After the I watched it once. But in the subsequent years lately, I haven't. I have read the books put out recently which i highly recommend. But after watching this vid and a few others before it that popped on my recommendations randomly, I think I'm gonna do a much needed rewatch.
I was part of one of the many " Brown coat" oragizations who helped get the movie made. It was such an eclectic group of " nerds" and to see Josh's reaction was priceless. Love the actors and josh's stuff. Always will.
i became a fan way after the show was canceled, thanks to a friend loaning me the DVD set. it still boggles the mind that Fox couldn't see the gold they had. great story. amazing cast. i'm a browncoat forever!❤
I showed the series to a friend and when it was done she was like, "OK, what's next?" all excited, so I popped in the movie. After that was over she asked me how they worked it with Wash and Shepard being dead and I told, "I don't know. They killed the series, then did the movie and that's all there is." I remember, she scream, "NO! How could they have been so STUPID! This series totally rocks." (sigh) I totally agree.
This will forever and always be the greatest show and movie ever made, the greatest story and cast. There chemistry just made everything perfect, and will always be my number one. I wish more than anything that we could have gotten at least a couple seasons. You will be forever missed and loved Ron Glass ❤️ RIP Sherpard Book.
Serenity did bring in new fans. It was my introduction to Firefly. I was one of those young adults that weren't home on Friday nights to watch TV. I didn't find it til I saw it on Netflix I believe. Now a solid fan with a box set, bluray of Serenity, and a daughter that loves the show
Likewise except I am an old adult (73yo). My son moved in with me with a box or 2 of DVDs. I was going thru them and passed on the movie but my son insisted that "You really WANT to watch this one." While I was watching it he came up with the TV series. I love my son, now more than ever.
Joss Whedon is a stellar writer. His language is instantly recognizable. I got to hear him speak in NYC at a bookstore event - maybe 50 people. The quality of Firefly is rare for television because the majority of the television audience is fine with reality shows and inane comedy - or drama. At least Firefly was made and aired. Thank you Firefly fans who put such heart and effort behind this treasure. 🎉
What a fascinating and sad story. I didn't even know about Firefly until I saw Serenity in the theater (and loved it), which is a true tribute to the quality story that it is. And please don't let Disney get a hold of it. They destroy everything they touch.
Same here. Saw the film first, and it plunged me into fully fletched characters I immediately was eager to know more about. At some point I checked the film on imdb and learnt that there was a TV series?! With the lines "We're still flying. - That's not much. - It's enough" I was sold on that universe. And yes, please, for the love of God, don't let current Disney execs find Firefly and "subvert" it.
It was a good show, but I think that the fact it was cut short and people's annoyance over it has built it up better than it actually was. It was well written with a lot quip-tastic moments, but if it had continued normally I think it wouldn't be as fondly remembered as it is Edit: also before you dislike Fox, just remember that you couldn't have bought that dvd without them choosing to take a risk and release it
I took a copy of Serenity to a friend of mine who had never heard of the Firefly. He, like me, are old farts who watched Star Trek back in the 60s on b/w tv. He was blown away. Which proves, that if its original, if its done with love and care, it will attract new fans.
If you look at what Disney has done with Star Wars and now the Avengers movies it becomes obvious that the new Disney CEO, (or CGO [Chiefly Greedy Officer] depending upon your point of view), Disney will NEVER bring back FireFly nor Serenity because they wouldn't, (in Disney's opinion), make Disney enough money. Seems like Disney has gone ALL ABOUT the all mighty dollar.
I'd never heard of Firefly, until someone suggested I watch Serenity. I asked what it was about, and they told me it was the movie based on the series. So, I bought Serenity, watched it, and then bought Firefly. I have lost count of how many times I have watched them. All the characters were perfect for/ in their roles.
I came across Firefly years after it was cancelled. I didn't realized it was cancelled when I first started watching. I fell in love with the story and characters. I was so sad when I found out that I only got one season. A shame!
@Michael Bravo , they are afraid of a backlash ofalling on non-woke movies. As in if it is not woke it will not sell at all. That's why all woke characters feel so unnatural. They were added just so they can be there, so there is no backlash. The second reason - making money without working. They use familiar famous stories, make heroes into girls or turn them black and hope people would pay for tickets/subscriptions for something that is both new and nostalgic. No need to find a new storie, use the fame of another storie. And they do. So first priority is still money. They just agree to less money to get any profit at all. That is why all the characters get treated this way.
@@PolinaLee94 Well I'd say there's 20% chance of any given series/movie turning out not woke these days. I wouldn't assume that they all will, I'd certainly like to give it a chance, but I'll also definitely be looking into some reviews before watching it myself
@@AeneasGemini , we probably need some # or simply a term to indicate shitty agenda movies and to separate them from good movies that talk about or show woke problems beautifully, like B99.
Marvel has been doing pretty well but I agree, I'd rather keep the fond memories of the FIrefly we did get than have a potential stain on the franchise because Disney wanted to profit off of the IP.
I'm not so sure. As long as Joss stays at the helm, and doesn't get his hands tied too much, I think the magic could still reappear. But not as a sequel. I see a lot of opportunities to fill in gaps, have plenty of stories that happened in between the time frame of the original series and the movie.
The warmth, integrity, love, and genuine human partnership of Firefly as a healing new set of movies is needed in the extremity our world more than ever right now. As we are ALL in the midst of extremity.
@@chrisdufresne9359 Yeah that seems to be every network's problem lately huh? I can't even imagine what Firefly would be like after the SJWs got it "cleaned up."
Firefly holds a special place in my heart as one of those shows that captured my imagination in my early twenties. I had a huge crush on Jewel Staite mainly because of her portrayal of Kaylee and her heartwarming interactions with the other characters. There are few shows where everything was done so well and the characters’ interrelationships were written with such authenticity.
Wow! This was both amazing and heartbreaking. Being excited learning new things about Firefly & Serenity while at the same time mourning Firefly's cancellation and Serenity's lack of sequels. The emotional music at the end was very moving too. Well done... Beyond well done. Best special on Firefly & Serenity I've seen so far!
For those still thirsting for more, there are also five Firefly books. I bought them on audio and I swear the narrator sounds almost exactly like Nathan Fillion but he has great range and does a fantastic job with every character. I'm on the fourth one now and am very happy so far. It's awesome to get some new stories and be able to "see" the actors in my head. I highly recommend!
Have to admit I agree with you. Can't imagine anyone who would revamp it without changing it beyond recognition into whatever social trend was 'bankable '.
Firefly is the only program that I consider perfection. Never watched it on TV, Don't have a TV. Never saw the movie, Don't go to the movies. But I finally rented the movie. For me the rest is history. Also have a crush on Kaylee. To me the perfect woman. She loves mechanical things, is inquisitive and brave. I immediately went out and bought the movie and series.
@@ThePopcast the best scifi shows have one element in common; crew evolves into family. IMHO Battlestar Galactica is the gold standard. Too bad Firefly didn't run long enough to challenge.
"I ate a bug." "Also, I can kill you with my brain," LOL! River cracked me up. One of my very favorite scenes is when Jayne tried to trade Vera, his "very favorite gun" for Saffron. Favorite episode probably 'Objects in Space'. Richard Brooks as Jubal Early was really amazing.

It is crazy how all this stuff happened nearly a decade before I even heard of it. Watching it in highschool with my friends was awesome. It was better than most shows on TV at that time. It is a real shame we did not get to see more, but what we got was fantastic.
I remember watching Firefly the first night it aired on TV. bought the box set when it can out. saw Serenity the week it came out. then bought the DVD of it. LONG LIVE FIREFLY
I saw some episodes of FIREFLY, here and there, D dialogue on the show was Awesome, along with the action! But I had NO IDEA that Serenity was Firefly, till years later. Not great marketing! Anywho FireFly and Serenity r d GOAT!!!
I loved this TV series because all the characters relationships was so connected, and that shows passion reflected passion just like iron sharpens iron.
I still LOVE the show, the movie and all of the characters AND the actors who played them. I have watched by dvd box set IN THE EPISODE ORDER IT WAS MEANT TO BE, at least twice a year. I started wearing it out, so I bought a back up set. The theme song not only described the characters and story of the show, but also the struggles of those who made it. As much as I love Joss's other shows, I will forever be grateful to him for making FIREFLY. Keep flying.
Yea that Fillian guy, he's been great in everything I've ever seen him in. I didn't know that he took on the unofficial role of "team captain" of the cast. I can imagine him doing well at that too because he just had that air about him like..."yea, I can make that work" about everything. I think he's a great actor and the cast for the show and the show was absolutely amazing. When I heard it was canceled I was pizzed! When it turned out to be true I was really pizzed but it's not like they ever put a show back on that got canceled because the fans rioted over it's cancellation.
I remember watching the last episode of Firefly which was my first and was hoping to another one the next week. A few years later I bought the series and Serenity and loved them all. It was a shame to be cancelled so soon.
I was so disappointed that it was canceled I was working a swing shift when it first came out I would really get disappointed when I come home to look at my recording on my VCR and I only get half of a movie no fire fly very irritated. Really enjoyed this thank you
Just imagine if Firefly had been on another network, we might have more than 14 episodes to watch. And if they are doing a reboot of it they need to hurry up but also the original cast needs to come back.
This show has a place in my heart second only to my kids. The amount of times I teared up during this video made it hard to be at work. Keep on flying, stay shiny, and that's good enough for me ❤
Not too long I saw the movie, two weeks ago on a flight saw a few episodes. I liked them all very much. It's grown on me, now I need to get the full series.
I am such a fan of the series and the movie now but I would disagree with some of the original fans. I saw the film, 'Serenity' first, (watched it on Netflix about 2 years ago now) then, being so impressed and engrossed in the story line and characters (who I immediately kind of fell in love with) looked it up on Imdb and saw that it was based on a tv series!...I was astounded that I had never even of it (and of course, bing watched the all of the tv episodes) Thank you so much, Joss Whedon!...I, like so many other fans, lament that it did not continue. But we still have the film and the original series to enjoy 🤗
Thank Heaven we at least got the movie. I can't think of a movie or series I loved more than this one. I felt it as a real tragedy that it couldn't go on for at least another full season. It also has real relevance in today's world which I suspect is one reason it got cancelled before its time.
It's really too bad Fox didn't realize that it didn't matter who they were going to put on Friday nights. If it was for young people, it wouldn't do well. They could have Given Firefly another season since it didn't matter and then watched it take off :)
@@chrisbiro1 So true, and and on more than one level, it entirely reflects the Borg like goals of those who want to control every aspect of life, and the urge for freedom that has not yet been stamped out of the human soul. The obsession with controlling the narrative and covering up the horrendous truth of what their arrogance has done to people and our world. The heroic determination that is demonstrated by those who just refuse to bow the knee and somehow manage to be individuals and make their own way against all odds is mirrored so well. Values like courage, loyalty, determination, I'm afraid Firefly was too inspiring, too uplifting, too potentially freeing and empowering to those who get its message. I for one will never forget the values that made this a truly great work of art and gave me encouragement during this time of great crisis.
@@Hat6000 I fully agree and hav said this many times in the past. Today's world is dominated by our own Alliance that for now operates behind the scenes but none the less is hell bent on forcing compliance with their authoritarian marxist will via their "great reset". It will take people like Mal and his crew standing up to them to continue the concept of freedom and truth. It will take people who value standing on their own two feet and not being dependent on the "system." And like in Firefly, packing your own personal defense on your hip is likely going to become a key part of our future. But I suspect like in Firely, it will also soon be required to live on the edge of society, likely being mobile via RV or camper, somewhat similar to Mal and the crew do. Hopefully without crime involving robbery and theft but no doubt living through bartering and other soon to be illegal non trackable means. This has become more obvious the last few months.

Tbf you can't wholly blame fox, Firefly had an excellent chance of being brought back if the movie had been successful, but a series of production mistakes by Universal pictures made that very unlikely. In the end it was just fate, so many people tried so many ways to make it a success but it just wouldn't take.
@@AeneasGemini I'm not blaming Fox for the failure of Serenity; mistakes were made, but it had nothing to do with them. I'm blaming Fox for the initial treatment and cancellation of Firefly.
There's so many great shows that Fox canceled after one season (like Almost Human) that I won't watch any of their shows unless it has at least 3 seasons under the belt.

I was introduced to the TV show through the movie, and I loved them both. It was a shame the studio didn't give this show a chance. It was a phenomenal show I binge watch it three or four times a year.
I have always considered Firefly and Serenity to be a class above other space scifi productions. I discovered Serenity in the outback of southern Mexico when a pirate peddler who sold door to door had it mixed up with a ton of bad martial arts movies. I had no idea what it was but ended up watching it so many times, I wore it out and had to find another one. I learned to curse in Mandarin with the help of the martial arts movies and the inspiration of Serenity.
Like most commenters here, I never heard of Firefly until it was cancelled. I caught a reference to the series from Sheldon on Big Bang Theory when he mentioned it would run for many years to come and the audience laughed. By chance, walking past the video dept. at Walmart, I saw the 14 episode set in the discount bin for $10. Took it home and was hypnotized. I was still involved with the DVD's when I saw a notice that Serenity was coming and went crazy waiting for it to come out. Now I'm 80 years old and after watching this video will go home after work and start the series all over again. So excited!
I was introduced to Firefly when the Serenity movie came out. I thought it was amazing and couldn't understand why it didn't do better at the box office. Then a friend of mine told me about the DVDs. I instantly fell in love. I hope Disney brings it back.
With the same team at the head of disney, expect a woke fest. With a different cast it would not work anyway. Chemistry was everything in the show, aside the universe. Firefly is history now, never will happen again. Let rest it in peace and loving memory.

Another was TSCC.
They never give these shows enough time to gain traction or apply enough money to marketing.
I think it is close. Stay Shiny.

Now that I think about it, I've never known anyone who watched Firefly say they didn't like it. Pretty much says it all man.

I hate to say it, but in a lot of ways it worked out perfectly. The story basically parallels what happened irl. Good idea, screwed over by powers that didnt understand it, and the "defeated" never really letting the fight go. And eventually getting a few good punches themselves. Or did I get it on DVD? I think I have it on Itunes but ai haven't watched either shows in a good while. I like to let them rest for a couple years before I go back and watch them because by then I've forgotten some of it and it makes it much more interesting.
But, do you own any of the comics?
How deep is the admiration for Firefly? My very good friend and neighbor named their son Malcom (they call him Mal all the time). To this day Serenity remains one of my favorite SiFi movies, along with Galaxy Quest and a couple others. I never saw any Fire Fly episodes prior to watching the movie but it didn't matter because Serenity is an excellant movie with a fine cast, well written and directed.
"Bad" in the Latin 😂
Damn, me too! 😎
I was the same way. I saw the movie and while I liked it, it didn't make complete sense. After seeing the series I enjoyed the movie a lot more.
Disagree, it doesn’t dwarf Star Trek at all. Star Trek is still great! I also philosophically disagree. Lowering one to raise another is bad form.
Hi Larry thanks for the comment! 100% agree the Movie eased the pain of losing the series although we'll always wonder what might have been!
Same here
Somewhere, in another parallel dimension, there is a 'Verse where Firefly has run longer than the Simpsons.
Think about that.
The movie wasnt closure, it ruined a potential revival
Only 1yr behind you my friend. Live long and prosper. Great scifi is a powerful anti-agapic!
Yep the cast bonded then just enjoyed their roles that doesn't happen often but they managed it :)
Me too, for real. I haven't had TV since 2003, and, with all due respect to today's talent, never looked back. No regrets.
I love you browncoats. We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.
A terrific Firefly spinoff would be a prequel revolving around Preacher Book's backstory! He had lots of charismatic secrets.
So sad , he passed.
I think they wrote a book explaining it

I'm a life-long Star Trek fan (71 years old). Firefly was better. The way the series was treated was baffling to me and still makes me angry.
In a “behind the scenes” they said that they spent a lot of their downtime (off camera) there as well 😊
I’ll always remember how I discovered Firefly, or should I say Serenity.
That was my experience exactly. Don't own a tv so watch dvd's on my computer. After Serenity, had to have the Firefly series. Stay shiny :-D
Yep. Same with me.
The person I was talking too, asked me "Have you been living under a rock?" (jokingly) and I said "No I was going through a bitter divorce from my second wife in 2001 to 2004 and I had been homeless since 2002 till a friend had allowed me to move in with them, but hadn't had cable in about three years!"
And that is when the online friend I was talking to said "Then you don't know about Firefly, huh?" And my reply was "Firefly, what is that about?" and the only answer I got was "Dude you HAVE TO SEE THIS SHOW!"!!!

Same with me, I came to appreciate that which I'd already missed!
I found firefly completely by accident years ago and have loved rewatching it often since, easily joss’s best work
Joss Whedon is a stellar writer.
Was a shame he became a victim of me too. Hollowwood is such a cowardly mob mindset place
Disney already owns it dude.
Just because they want to f%^ing own everything. They weren't involved in the making of it which is why it wasn't trash.@@franciscopozole
Yeah me too. In this video they allude to people who see Serenity first might not like the movie because they haven't watched Firely. Totally disagree
Firefly is one of my favorite series. A shame it wasn't loved by Fox. And yes, I bought the DVD.
It was a good show, but I think that the fact it was cut short and people's annoyance over it has built it up better than it actually was. It was well written with a lot quip-tastic moments, but if it had continued normally I think it wouldn't be as fondly remembered as it is
Edit: also before you dislike Fox, just remember that you couldn't have bought that dvd without them choosing to take a risk and release it
don't forget to get Serenity (2005) the movie! it concludes the series!
Yep, I bought the DVDs as well. Too bad Joss killed off to many characters in the movie.

I always loved Ron Glass and definitely love him as Book
venus flytrap.
Regrettably, they're both gone.
This is the best, most complete and correctly toned summary of the Firefly phenomenon. They can't take the sky from us.
A shame!
Firefly actually sets up a very cool multiverse. I hope moviemakers will see that and renew it.
But not like what they did to Star Wars.
@Michael Bravo , i hope not. They care about money much more, so movies still have chance.
But please never a Disney reboot like they propose making.... Just. Wow.
I hope Disney doesn't take a stab at it. They ruin everything they touch at this point.
Marvel has been doing pretty well but I agree, I'd rather keep the fond memories of the FIrefly we did get than have a potential stain on the franchise because Disney wanted to profit off of the IP.
I wouldn't mind it if they could get a solid showrunner. Dave filoni and Jon Favreau did a great job with the mandolorian
I could viably see a spin off in the same universe. But it would not do well with bringing the same people back.
I'm not so sure. As long as Joss stays at the helm, and doesn't get his hands tied too much, I think the magic could still reappear. But not as a sequel. I see a lot of opportunities to fill in gaps, have plenty of stories that happened in between the time frame of the original series and the movie.
@@lukearts2954 Joss Whedon will not be involved according to Disney. Probably won't have any of the original characters either.

I didn't see or even hear of Fire Fly until I saw it on Netflix. I first saw Jewel on Star Gate Atlantis where I fell madly in love with her.
Great art transcends time and people.
Firefly truly does.
For those still thirsting for more, there are also five Firefly books.
This show was so unique and wonderful - - The range of characters, the acting, the plot lines, the theme song, etc ... Supreme!!!
@@ThePopcast If only....
I agree that this show is strangely relevant to today's world and I suspect this was a huge part of why it was cancelled.
The Popcast, I didn't know I could get so many goosebumps within 5 minutes of watching your content. This is the third video I'm watching, I have a lot to catch up on, but two thumbs up.
Update : 7 mins in
Your research is deep. WoW So much more impressed after goosebumps gone
One of the best shows that almost was......enjoyed every episode
I will never forgive Fox for the loss of Firefly.
Never.
@@purpleskiesforever Good strategy.
I really liked Almost Human. I mean, you can see the budget constraints, but it was really decent.
This, imo, was one of the best ever produced Sci-fi series....My sons, who were not even born when it was released and are now in their 20"s, are sold fans and we all power watch the series (in order) and the movie together when we have extended family get togethers....I cant begin to count how many times we've watched this and enjoy it every time.
Soiledbear that is awesome. I hope I can get my kids to watch it with me someday :)
So is my daughter who’s 24. She absolutely loves the show and often rewatches her favourite episodes.
"I swear by my pretty floral bonnet...I will end you." One of my all time favorite lines from anything. That whole scene to me was the best in the series.
"A well regulated [comprehensive contingencies management / neighborhood incident management system] being necessary [to the national security (democratic) posture] of a free state, the right of the people [to employ, a version, of the Swiss template, of "active and passive civil defense"; so to, mechanize and empower, pure / direct demos-kratos, within a republic, by restoring "muster" (from "home", on a device, to resolve crucial issues), in a 21st century context, will not likely be ] infringed."

However, there's no reason "We..." can't build, and use, such a secondary manual backup system.

Remember the stories, about women, who got fed up with what stupid proud men were doing... killing and fighting, and destroying the peace in a town... and how the girls gathered and put a stop to it? Such is what this system could provide, as an avenue for drastic change, to the good. Start with women who have worked in FET... Add this system, to what they were trained to do.
Firefly is the best Science Fiction show I've ever watched.
I was introduced to the TV show through the movie, and I loved them both. It was a shame the studio didn't give this show a chance. It was a phenomenal show I binge watch it three or four times a year.
Never underestimate the incompetence of big business executives. I haven't watched network TV since I can remember.
Yeah, I stopped years ago.
Thank you for covering firefly :) ... this is the best Video Essay I've seen in months
Thank you! After 6 weeks of making it, you have no idea how good that makes us feel. Really appreciate the comment Ahmed
Firefly came along at a time when I needed it. It still influences me today.
And this is why Fox sucks Firefly forever
Don't forget star trek, that was just like Firefly for most of the seventies, until it made a huge comeback due to fan support
