I don't believe in no win situations. But seriously, it would be a huge shame if Star Trek finally came back into its prime only to have the rug pulled out from underneath it. Paramount+ is unironically the only streaming service I use these days. Between Star Trek (new and legacy content), the Yellowstone universe, Tulsa King, and all the rando stuff they have licensed, it's such a pleasure to not be subjected to the poor tastes of Netflix and Amazon.

Two things: I've heard it said that there are too many streaming services, but we don't want someone like Netflix to have a monopoly either, do we? The other is what does it say if Paramount+ fails and the UPN network already failed?

The problem for Paramount+ is that it has not gone global enough. It needs to go truly global the way Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video are.

I like Paramount Plus. ST strange New Worlds is great and I love Yellowjackets on Showtime. I think the problem is there is a great percentage of people that don't actually pay for the service. They use the free month trick over and over again. Paramount would be wise to get rid of that IMO

  • @pauljazzman408

I don't like Paramount+ because they took Star Trek Discovery away from Netflix to make their own streaming service. There are way too many streamers. Who can afford them all? Then I watched the latest season of ST Discovery and didn't like it at all. Picard final season was great because it was finally in space! But as you say it could go to other streamers. There isn't room in the market for that many streaming services.

I've grown to love Paramount Plus because it allows me to see "Ghosts" and the new "Beavis..." episodes without having to pay double-digits for a live streaming service. Additionally, it provides me a live stream of my local CBS affiliate so I can check it out for severe weather coverage.
Although I understand the economics, I'll be very disappointed if they shut down.

I agree completely, I use it for local news/weather coverage too.
Although at the same time, as far as Trek goes, they've already got the movies on HBO Max, so it wouldn't be much of a struggle, I'm sure, to get them to take the TV shows too.

No HBO, HULU or most of the others mentioned in my country.
CBS10 hasn't aired any STAR TREK series for 2 months, instead flooding the Network with NCIS, JAG, FRIENDS, BIG BANG, WORKAHOLICS, THE MIDDLE, & heaps of the dreaded HOME SHOPPING, none of which I watch.
STAR TREK~DISCOVERY is due to start again on Thursday night @11.30pm & Friday @10.20pm (probably a repeat of Thursday).
Would like them to air DEEP SPACE NINE, which hasn't been aired for more than a decade.

I think they could get a bump by adding in the Showtime content... I would not like to see it move over to Netflix where most of the series are unwatchable. This was one reason why I didn't adopt CBS All Access when it first became available. I was enjoying Star Trek on Netflix, then Netflix raised prices for shows I didn't care for and so I dropped Netflix FOR the less expensive streaming of Paramount + primarily FOR the new Star Trek content. I have access to Hulu to watch The Orville so I would be happiest if Paramount+ went to Hulu, I am just concerned Disney would somehow get hold of Star Trek and ruin my enjoyment of it.

Came in with CBS "before" Paramount bought them! Loved series "Evil" so had to get. Bonus was S T Discovery, now lost in the sauce too. Then Picard which was a joy 🥰, Writers did an amazing story line there. My rub is they start these one season stories , then just drop!! Picked up Wolf Pack and School Spirit which I enjoyed tremendously...but if they drop streaming what happens to them. IDK the problem with Paramount+ being a streaming service is that they are under pressure to produce a lot of content to keep subscribers. I'd much rather they produce fewer Star Trek shows and just concentrate on quality. Even when Star Trek was on air there never were more than 2 shows on air at the same time. The weird thing is there IS a Paramount channel on cable yet it doesn't show the Star Trek shows.

It's Difficult. I use P+ to watch several CBS shows at more convenient times, like when VCRs were a thing. I also watch the current Trek shows and binge-watched DS9 & Yoy. Much different expeience than the weekly shows.
These days we watch P+ & Peacock and Acorn & BritBox more often than Hulu, Netflix or Prime.
I think we need data that we don't have access to.
You don't discard 60 Million new subscribers plus subscribers already onboard.
Also, you did not say where the losses are coming from. Are they paper or real?

I have found that Paramount + has the worst software of all streamers. And it's bad in different ways on different platforms. Poor design and functional choices, slow to load, frequent crashes or stoppages of playback, and more. Not to mention how the app punishes you for backing up or pausing... replay that commercial! Right. Shrink that window down to nothing when pausing (PC). Right. Truly not a Class A development process with very poor oversight. I subscribed only to access Star Trek series, including DS9 which I'd never watched (it's great, turns out), and to get Beavis & Butthead. Most of the other offerings on P+ are not my taste. And the movies selections are weak weak weak. Old B-level stuff mostly. But it's the horrible software design and bugs that make me hold my nose every time I run it. All platforms. Ooof!

I don't think Paramount+ is going to shut down this year. Broadcast television is hurting with streaming services and, while not competing for the top slots, CBS and the rest will want to maintain a digital presence as it may be the future. CBS News has not been number one in decades but it hasn't been shut down because it still makes money. They just need to make Paramount+ profitable.

Netflix has gotten outrageously expensive and now you can't even share accounts without paying an extra $10/person that you add, plus the $22 for the 4K Family Package if you want to watch shows in 4K with other people in the same household. Netflix is getting a slow death. In Spain Netflix has already lost 2/3rds of their customers, who are now switching to other service providers like Paramount+ because they're much cheaper and the account can be shared. If Paramount+ could just get another 20 million people to sign-up over the next couple years, and they displace Netflix, then they will be absolutely fine.

Hulu buys all of its content, where Disney produces all if its own. Disney is reportedly loosing subscribers because it cannot keep up with the demand for new programming.
With all that said, I think it would be a good idea for Paramount to start buying programming from other studios like Sony and WB. I believe they already have a bit of that through showtime and the Paramount network.

Also, Sony does have a streaming service. It’s a free, ad-supported service called Crackle.

Didn't Paramount+ change into Skyshowtime? atleast it did here in Sweden, I bought a one year service and canceled two weeks after, when I notised it DOESN'T WORK, I spent two weeks with what they called their support, asking me to try new devices or browsers until I gave up on them, I log in to check from time to time and it's still the same, it's just a money grab service, the market would be better without them.

I think something missing is that Paramount+ owns Intellectual Property people care about. The “Tech” streamers do not. Even Netflix falls into this category. However, Netflix is unique in that it was first to market as a streaming service and built up a large subscription base. But honestly, N has lost all its good content which is why others are catching up. I see Netflix withering if the competition can hang long enough to avoid selling their IP to Netflix again.
That isn’t to say the road will be easy for P+. All of what this video says of P+ is mostly true, with again the content exception, Prime and Apple are not gaining ground because they don’t have enough exceptional content; key word being enough. Netflix has a different problem but similar in that they have very little exceptional content, but they have a lot, tons in fact, of mediocre content variations to keep a subscriber busy.

I think that's bad news but I guess I'll have to wait & see. If Star Trek is spread out to a few different streamers we're not better than getting trek all in one place, right? It seems to if everything is in fewer hands then those few will monopolize entertainment & charge more. Is it all going boil down to a big 3 like the old days of broadcast; NBC, ABC, CBS but in this case 3 others? I don't understand the numbers I guess. It could shake out to be glorious, more great Trek than ever before. We'll see.

I have to admit, the only reason I even subscribe to them is because of Star Trek content, and when they don't have any new content I cancel the service until they have new stuff again.
Yeah Paramount may have to go to the production company only model to survive. The one thing I hate about that model is sometimes good shows get cancelled because the production company and the streaming service can't agree on a licensing deal, and not because the ratings were too low.

With the addition of Showtime later this year, I think Paramount+ will be in a better position and if anything they should try to link up with AppleTv. A consolidation of AppleTv and Paramount+ (without raising prices) would be a big boost to both companies and the content they produce. There has been a lot on AppleTv that looks good that I just don't want to pay for another service and that content looks like it would fit right in with what Paramount+ already has.

This might be another nail in it coffin fact those who get showtime still have option use showtime anytime don’t have to get paramount plus showtime bundle because they didn’t shut it down. So paramount has pay keep to streaming apps up and running for now. At least with people behind max had common sense shutdown HBOMAX and discovery plus and merge to stream platforms and give it new name which suits new improved service.

I never understood why people want to pay more to watch a show on a streaming channel when they are already paying for Internet and cable. Sure a streaming service may not cost much per month, but it adds up year after year, especially if you have more than one streaming service. I'd say cancel them and force networks to air shows on regular channels, but that's just me.

I also have every streaming service under the sun (except for showtime) because I cut cable. I'll continue to pay whatever Paramount asks to access Star Trek, but I wouldn't be mad if they bundled with another streaming service so long as they reallocated some of that budget to make more Star Trek. I want my 4th Kelvin movie and I want 5+ seasons of strange new worlds and I want a 7 spinoff

I don’t think so. Could Paramount is very affordable compared to some of these other streaming services. They need to start developing more Star Trek shows, and apparently they’re doing Star Trek legacies. Remember that also Netflix has lost a lot of subscribers due to the rising prices, and Disney has lost a ton of subscribers in the last year and lost billions of dollars in revenue from it.
