You forgot to include the best response Bioware had to this entire controversy. When the Developers released the Bring Down The Sky DLC for Mass Effect 1, one of the points of interest you can drive up to on Asteroid X57 is a small Radio Station. Examining the Terminal Inside the Station normally describes it as a Small Pirate Music Station that the Engineers on the Asteroid had set up while they were working and some of the promotional tag lines they have scripted out. In the PC Version and in all versions of Legendary Edition however, Examining the Radio Terminal a second time pulls up a new prompt that reads; "You notice an open text file, the personal journal of the station operator. It reads in part: "Project director wants to shut us down. Says our music is too 'extreme', that we're inciting the younger workers to riot and sleep with aliens. I asked him if he'd listened to us. To be fair, that hasn't really stopped kids from playing these kinds of games. A lot of little kids played GTA 5 and GTA Online. It's on the parents that allowed them to play, but still though, an M rating is hardly a barrier for entry, especially nowadays.
@@lmno567 Bro, its illegal to buy an M game if you're underage. How is that not a perfectly defined barrier to entry? You can't deflect parental failure into fascism. to rate something is all we can do. anything more is fucking cersorship.

Not only are their claims about the game degrading females into humpable objects false, it also undermines the very essence of Liara's character, who, in fact, is a highly educated cultural anthropologist in spite of the game's own stereotypes about Asari being depraved lust demons.
Yeah kinda wild, the Mass Effect games while having some issues _(miranda colonoscopy cam)_ were fairly ahead of their time in terms of representing women in games as equally deep and complex characters with agency and independence.
And in 2007 the baulders gate people would've used the news as fee advertisement and made bg4 even raunchier. Feels like nowadays people are quick to censor things the media wants them to rather than double down like they did back then
The only reason they’re not losing it right now is because BG3 is so universally admired and video games have become a better respected medium. The basic attitudes have not changed at all.
The Mass Effect 2 offer could have saved her career. People forget how much hype was around that game. Its first real ad was aired during the Superbowl.
As someone who was at the time of Mass Effects release, a horny teenage boy, I cannot stress enough that the only thing greater than the fuss around this game's sex scenes, was my disappointment on actually getting to that part of the game.
The "exaggerated sex scenes" may have felt like they were dissuading people from getting the game, but the truth is it was the greatest marketing ever for Mass Effect 1. The first thing I ever heard by word of mouth about this game was "lesbian sex scene". These sorts of news stories were activating 14 year old neurons.
I was 11 at the time and heard nothing of the news, but one day a friend of my dad's gifted me Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball 2 and Mass Effect 1. The first one I recognised as definitely not being for kids. But in hindsight... did he think ME1 was in the same caliber because he had seen the news? Either way, I got a favourite game from that lol.

It has some rather in depth wrestling mechanics and a decently steep learning curve. But you probably wouldn't think that if you were to look it up. lol
I thought this was gonna be about an author who wrote a book called mass effect before BioWare announced mass effect, making her book impossible to google. Like that movie frozen. No, the other one
Your lack of specificity makes your comment much less useful almost zero actually but "thanks" I suppose for pointing out the possibility for possible scenario.
I thought it was gonna be about the 4th tie-in novel Mass Effect Deception. After the first three were written by one of the lead writers for the game and were pretty good, they brought in a new author for the 4th book who clearly did not understand Mass Effect nor had a grasp on preestablished lore. The book was a mess and heavily criticised, so much so that Bioware and EA had to apologise, and promised to rerelease the book with all the glaring errors corrected. I don't think they ever happened in the end however.
@6:52 It's basically like trying to "protect the kids" by banning liqueur chocolates: "Yes they say those chocolates are for 'adults', but let's look statistically at WHO'S eating chocolates! It's children! Children eat the vast majority of chocolates in the world! Do you support children .. and babies! ... having access to liqueur! You monster!!!"
Well that is literally why you can't buy flavored cigarettes. Adults hate flavor so the idea of an adult product with flavor must mean it's being marketed towards kids, fast forward 25 years and now flavored cigarettes are more popular than ever except they have to be battery powered.
@@marii8ytb Nope, just regulars or menthols. You can still get flavored cigars like Swishers though. It always confuses me that people believed people who had little to no experience with what they're talking about rather than people who have actually played the game before. politicians in general are full of shit when it comes to video games or any relatively recent piece of entertainment or technology. The funny part is that the first time I played Mass Effect I didn't even realize there was a romance subplot because I apparently chose the "friend" dialog choices for both Ashley and Liara. But romances in video games are almost always so poorly written. At least the Miranda romance in ME2 almost kinda made sense since they had something in common and that one only happens if you actually pursue it, as opposed to the ME1 romances which were barely more complicated than "I listened to your sad story, you good looking, sex now please."
Yeah, I played through the entire trilogy three or four times as virgin Shep because romance plots in video games are always so boring, contrived, and have no actual impact on the story and gameplay. Which is actually why Mass Effect is a nice change of pace. Some of the best and funniest dialog comes up in the romantic arcs. And it's intentionally funny too. In most games the best you can hope for is that it's bad enough to be amusing.
@@michealdrake3421 seriously. I only got into ME when the legendary dropped, and only got around to the Tali subplot on my 6th playthrough. I see now why that arc has the reputation it does. Makes it even funnier that the devs didn't expect Garrus or Tali to become fan favorites in the first place.
As a guy with zero personal game, it has always pissed me off how laughably easy romancing the hottest options out there always is in gaming. One reason I'll never come anywhere close to any chatbot: if it's so easy, it can't be true. Would be awesome to see a game where your level of attraction depends on your stats and physical appearance rather than selecting dialogue option. Of course, hard to imagine in today's climate (Kotaku: "Fatshaming in game strips romance options from body positive players!") but once this whole craze has withered away and died, who knows.
@@yarpen26 In fairness, chubby chasers exist, so you could pretty easily get around that by having certain other romances locked to bigger characters, but the main reason it doesn't happen is because it'd be hard to program in, since EVERY option in a character creator (which is a lot, with how many options there can be nowadays) would need to be given a different number to affect the 'attraction' stat. Combined with most RPGs having some sort of Charisma stat anyway, it's just generally easier and more convenient for both parties to not have to go through the extra effort. That said, Fable: The Lost Chapters does have a system like this, but that game doesn't really have a character creator and more so your character's appearance is changed based on several different factors, as well as the game not having any proper romances besides one, so I don't know if that really counts. That, and The Sims 4, but that's not an RPG (and is also TS4 lol) so it's also debatable if that counts.

I love how the conservative pundit at the start says the game is about treating women like their objects by men…. Yet Tali zorah the most popular romance in mass effects entire franchise is centered around the fact you don’t know what she looks like and you have to accept her for who she is and has a very strong expressive, and opinionated, personality. even by alien humanoid standards in ME she doesn’t follow traditional beauty standards by having only 3 fingers, digitgrade legs with 3 toe….no wait correction 4th ankle toe cause she’s female, and has literal glowing eyes…. And the response to just her face reveal was met with such rage and outrage it was NOT restored in mass effect legendary edition and replaced with all new ACTUAL art. Edit: oh right I forgot and her ….”big night” scene in BOTH games where she is romancable…. FADE TO BLACK after she takes off her mask with an FOV that doesn’t let you see her face. Meaning the most popular romance in the game…is also literally the most tame and contains no improper content other than their jokes. Unless they count hugging her after finding her father’s body as improper content….oh wait it’s a man showing empathy and emotion of course conservatives would lose it over that.
You had me until the very end, where you took all your valid criticism and used it to just sideswipe a general "conservative" notion like some unhinged lefty. As if cultural media hasn't shown strong men comforting women before. No, that's apparently just a new concept that cropped up in the past few years so those darn righties can just get triggered.
"Mass Effect, in terms of suggestive content, is on par with an episode of Family Guy." Okay, I'll give EA credit for roasting Fox there, but it still doesn't excuse everything they've done.
This isn't about the sex scenes, but one of the most outrageous comments she makes is about how the game depicts women, saying they exist as sex objects for the male character and male players, when just about every woman you come across in ME1 is extremely competent, strong, accomplished or powerful, not even just companions but NPC's too. It probably has one of the best depictions of women in the entire catalogue of games

I was raised in a very conservative household, by then relocated from the city to a rural area. I'm bisexual, and I had some pretty bad internal hatred starting to ferment in my tiny child brain. I was just starting puberty around the time the first mass effect game came out, and trying to reconcile my attraction to both boys and girls with what I had been taught about being gay being a sickness that eventually turned you into some kind of sex-killer child murderer pervert. It was rated 12 in the UK IIRC, so I was allowed to play it.... and then the cool blue chicks in my cool space game were all bisexual or lesbian women.... and one of them could be my character's girlfriend??? EVEN IF I WAS PLAYING AS A GIRL? It's fucking laughable that it was attacked as some misogynistic harem simulator where children learn that women are just sex objects for Commander Shepard- certified male manly man- to play with. Mass Effect was literally how I found out that lesbians were a real thing, that being gay wasn't an evil brain disease, and that people outside of the little bubble my family had crafted for me, really didn't care who you fancied, and if they did, they were actually the weird ones. That game was kinda the first piece of media I consumed that treated the topic of being gay as anything but gross, shameful, or funny. The first nudge I got out of a bubble that was trying to teach me to view sex, sexuality, and gender like that- not putting those ideas into my head. So here's to violent video games corrupting the nations youth!, I guess?.
Mass effect was one of the last games to be rated by the bbfc before they handed game ratings off to pegi. Its kinda funny how it got a 12 since their focus is on film and compared to anything you see in film, its incredibly tame.

Kinda sounds like she did it to herself.
My only gripe about Mass Effect was that I should have played it when I was younger ironic enough.
I owe you an apology, Geoff. I wasn’t really familiar with your game.
isnt it ironic that gta exists and this lady was this worked up over mass effect? like sheeesh
Mass effect was one of the last games to be rated by the bbfc before they handed game ratings off to pegi. Its kinda funny how it got a 12 since their focus is on film and compared to anything you see in film, its incredibly tame.
"It's a Man in this game deciding how many women he wants to be with."
every teenage boy near a TV when this line was uttered suddenly paid attention, but not in the way Fox hoped
No, it's "Why can't I romance Doctor Chocolates?"
Its rather ironic that certain gamers got upset about someone saying a game is too sexy when there is literally a page on Steam dedicated to letting you know if a game iss "too woke" or not...run by certain gamers.
