- Time for a mini build project and this time we're putting together the Kung Fu Flash cart that Lee from @MoreFunMakingIt sent me. But I thought while doing this I'd also expand the video to talk a bit more about how I approach this type of SMD soldering. I'm by no means an expert so take it with a pinch of salt but wanted to show you in more detail how I do it.

All the videos about the Kung Fu Flash cartridge should have that song about kung fu fighting as background!!
Very educational for those of us that can't solder SMD worth a damn ... thanks dude!
That type of tip is usually called a bevel tip. A chisel tip is more like a blunt screwdriver.
Lee is just a nice bloke!
Very much so. We speak often and help each other with little projects when we can. Lee is a good friend in this UA-cam world.
Great tutorial, helps build confidence to have a go!.
Nice little tutorial, good to hear some of the ways you like to make up boards like this, I've made some notes...
Oh and I'm still finding myself giggling at your fine voice acting skills on Rosie's Blue Force video, a total triumph - A voice acting career awaits! 😂
Its always good fun when working with Rosie although not sure why the guy from Belfast got the role of ANGRY boat owner 😆
@@CRG lol 😂 well it worked for me!
nice !! thanks for showing how to do the sodering..i enjoyed it ...and seeing the Kung fu..flash card work!
I find SMD soldering quite relaxing once you get into the, flow of it.
A good guide to soldering.
It's just important not to overheat one spot if it doesn't work.
Then it's better to solder something else and let it cool down, then rework it later with a lot of flux.
I love the Kung Fu Flash, it's so much more convenient than an Easy Flash cartridge. Although I think I'd get myself one of those SMD practice kits before trying any soldering on something important, my eyesight is crap. :)
I did the same build last night. That's a great explanation of the drag technique -- I still need practice.
I'm sure there are many ways to do it. This is just my self-taught approach which I mostly picked up from watching others on UA-cam.
There is SMD Chip Glue the electronics seem to use to lock the component to the board so that it doesn't move while they solder it.
This is great. Might have to get one myself. I love anything Commodore. :)
I can highly recommend it, makes life so much easier on the 64.
oh nice. been curious about these kung fu carts actually... that sd2iec is handy enough but I would much prefer sth much faster like that
It really is worth it, so much fast at loading plus seems to support everything the SD2IEC does an more.
Really enjoyed this video and all the soldering tips. Would be great if you could make a totally beginners guide for soldering. Which equimpent makes sense and how to start this wonderful hobby. I thin you have a very valuable channel.
Thanks, I'll look into doing a guide.
@@CRG I'd love a guide too!
Nice. FYI I recently ordered leaded solder from RS Components and they rejected it as a restricted item. Needs a trade account.
In the same order I had a few flux pens, wick etc which came with a 40+ A4 pages regarding H&S.
Came fast, I'll give them that. The flux tasted funny though.
I get my solder from CPC Farnell, they don't require you to have a trade account.
@@CRG CPC Farnell did indeed work. No bullshit H&S leaflets.
Just as well they didn't sell you the solder, I find that gets stuck in my teeth...
Are there any tools to help you keep the soldering iron steady? I have quite a shaking hand, but I would so much like to learn soldering and start tinkering with my retro computers.
nothing that I can think of but I too suffer occasionally from a shaky hand and when it does start I find resting my arm and wrist on the table beside what I'm soldering can help. If its really bad, I can push my wrist into the table which I find gives an anchoring point for my hand.
What is the difference between the Kung Fu Flash and the Kung Fu Flash Mini? Cheers.
My C64c really needs one of these. Any recommended source?
There are various folk selling them on ebay or you could download the gerbers from github and get them made at one of the pcb houses. I asked Lee where he got his boards, he ordered them from jlcpcb. Minimum order of 5 though and you'd need to get the soldering iron out.
@@CRG Thanks bought one from eBay. Soldering iron next time 🫣
@@CRG Did jlcpcb assemble the other components that you didn't install in the video?
Are far as I know, yes, they assembled the rest of it. I didn't order the board myself though, it was a donation by Lee from MFMI.
You can also get them assembled and ready to go from places like The Future Was 8-Bit if you don't fancy soldering yourself.
Do you do Kung Fu?
Only while soldering 😅
