- My review of vampire novel Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda.
Book synopsis:
Lydia is hungry.
She's always wanted to try sashimi, ramen, onigiri with sour plum stuffed inside - the food her Japanese father liked to eat. And then there is bubble tea and the vegetables grown by the other young artists at the London studio space she is secretly squatting in. But Lydia can't eat any of this. The only thing she can digest is blood, and it turns out that sourcing fresh pigs' blood in London - where she is living away from her vampire mother for the first time - is much more difficult than she'd anticipated.
Then there are the humans: the people at the gallery she interns at, the strange men who follow her after dark, and Ben, a goofy-grinned artist she is developing feelings for. Lydia knows that they are her natural prey, but she can't bring herself to feed on them.
If Lydia is to find a way to exist in the world, she must reconcile the conflicts within her - between her demon and human sides, her mixed ethnic heritage, and her relationship with food, and, in turn, humans.
Before any of this, however, she must eat.

Considering how difficult it is to find a nursing home in general, I can only imagine how tough it would be to find one that would accept an elderly vampire with dementia.
😂😂😂
This was my first book to read as an intro to the horror genre and although it’s not scary i loved it so much! Lydia is so relatable and overall I just love the story, the mix of coming of age kind of with the vampire and gosh, it’s still one of my favorites! Thanks so much for the recommendation! It’s really one of a kind
Certainly sounds interesting with lots of thought-provoking themes done in a unique way with the vampires!
Yeah, it's an interesting read
Yay! I had a good time with it too! What I Eat in a day videos are genuinely my favourite videos on UA-cam! 😂 Siân
I had no idea they were even a thing!
I was hesitant on Woman Eating but I think you sold me on it whereas no other Booktuber I follow described it in such a thoughtful way. Great job!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy it when you read it.
Ooo, this is going on my list. Thanks!
I tried Night Bitch and abandoned it, but this looks great.
My favourite vampire book, oddly, is Vampire Academy. And I’m not into YA usually, but I like the main character and the theme of class is well done.
I have Vampire Academy on my Kindle I think
I liked this book, too, but the fact that her vampire mother is in a home didn't sit well with me. How would that ever work?? And the fact that Lydia ages, despite being a vampire, but until a certain point also irked me. The rest was awesome. I loved the ending, too. Overall, it was a very unique read.
Yeah it does play around with the lore a bit, but overall I thought it worked really well
I really liked this book as well! I almost stopped reading it because I was in the mood for something very lighthearted and fun...and I found this quite sad. However, Lydia was such a relatable character that I really wanted to see where she would end up, and in the end it was such a good experience!
Yeah she was a great protagonist I thought.
Ooh this has been on my list, glad you liked it. Horror with social themes, gothic/melancholy vibes, literary, and vamps, all my fave tropes!! My favorite vampire book is The Gilda Stories :)
I think you’ll like it! Not heard of The Gilda Stories, I’ll have to check it out
Favourite vampire book, might be "let the right one in", but that may be bolstered by the fact that I really like the original film.
Great choice! Agree that both are excellent
I loved Nightbitch, but if we all agreed on the same books, we'd have nothing to discuss! I think I'd like Woman, Eating, too.
Very true!
what an interesting premise!
Yeah it’s very well done.
Sounds fascinating. Nice review, Olly. - 📚MJ My favorite vampire book is Interview with the Vampire.
I need to reread that as I feel like I should like it but don’t remember thinking it was that good 😂
@@CriminOllyBlog It was a high school discovery for me and I was simply enamored with the characters.
Apart from 'Dracula', my favourite vampire novel is 'The Keep' by F. Paul Wilson.
That’s a fantastic choice. I really need to reread that as it’s been ages. Have you read much else by Wilson?
No, I haven't read anything else by him - but I really should.
@@parlabaneisback yeah I’ve only read one other thing which I forget the name of
I’m reading this in the next month or so, but prefer the sound of a more traditional vampire book. I love Dracula and I’ve just finished Salem’s Lot which surprised me in how much I did like it.
This definitely isn’t traditional! Hope you enjoy it when you get to it.
Ahh the old pigs blood trope, it doesnt work, you need the real stuff. I thought vampires dont age ? 🤨 I've only read one vampire book (Bram Stoker's Dracula) so I can't really nominate one.
Only Dracula? Wow. You need to read some others!
My favorite vampire book is Lesser Dead by Christopher Beuhlman.
I’ve not heard of that! Will look it up.
Do you keep a log of all the books you read? I have to or I would spend my time buying the same books over and over again as I constantly forget what I've read 🤦♀️
Same.
Yes, I use Goodreads to log what I’ve read. The problem I have is with buying books I’ve already got but haven’t read yet 😂
Never thought about that, that complicates things even more 🤦♀️
@@lesleyb26 it does!
😆
A good lycanthropy short story writer? Angela Carter.
Oh great call!
