I loved this book but couldn't articulate to others why. You described it perfectly. I learned about 3 act structure from you. I too loved how he developed the sense of place... I felt like I was right there snd even got chilled when they were all in Montana. I wasn't let down when the mystery was unveiled. A whole new sub-story to support her actions began. It was really good and not 1000 pages!!!

Every time you mention the crate, I can't help thinking "what's in the box?!!" Thanks for getting me hyped to pick this one up off my shelf.

I’m so happy to see a shining review from you on this book because I’ve mostly watched peoples’ negative reviews on it. I’m exited to see where I land when I get to it soon. I have a physical copy!

I loved this book, and I'm so happy to hear your thoughts on it. It does so many things well at once, it's mind-blowing. But first and foremost, it's horrifying. For instance, I'll never forget the blink-and-you-miss-it passage where a certain someone is grabbed off a horse by a certain someone just after it "cracks" that horse in half, leaving it to some hungry pack of wolves. Just the idea of something being "cracked" open, like an egg. Yikes. Also, I really enjoyed how that certain something is included in the titular cast of "lone women". Speaking of which, I'm thinking of all the different things the book's title could mean . . . is the title paradoxical? How can these women be (a)lone if they're together? It reminds me of the end of Milton's "Paradise Lost" when Adam and Eve walk "hand in hand, they're separate ways".

Overall, I loved the premise of the book!!!!! The smash up of genres - genius!!! I love a little historical fictional, mystery mixed with horror - chef’s kiss! I feel the book was disjointed in some areas. I also felt the ending was rushed. Again, the author is so creative and imaginative and was able to incorporate Black women homesteaders at the turn of the 20th century! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I liked the ending, but I can see how you might feel that way. Glad you liked it overall though!

Lone Women has been my second favourite book, so far, this year. I loved it, makes me hope for more modern horror western books to come out on the market.

Glad you enjoyed it! I also love late westerns. The later the period, the more remote the setting needs to be. I wrote a western screenplay last semester that was set in a poaching camp deep in the Colorado Rockies in the early 1930s.

I loved this book! Victor Lavalle is a wonderful writer. I’ve loved all his books so far. I’m glad that you touched on his pacing. I’ve always thought his books always have a lovely “slow burn” at the beginning, before things get really weird. He really takes time to flesh out his characters in a way that gets you really invested.

This was such a good book. I also would recommend The Devil in Silver, which was my first book by LaValle (I haven't read The Changeling yet). You can tell that he really cares about his characters, on top of being an excellent writer, and it makes his stories both riveting and moving.

The Ballad of Black Tom is on my TBR for the beginning of July. I've heard great things. I also really want to read Lone Women, but the waitlist for it at my library is insane.

I haven't read it but it sounds good. It appears to have my less is more rule too - only 300 pages ? I think that helps the classic structure.

Glad you liked it. With Lavalle I'm always really excited when a new book gets released and then it takes me months to actually get around to reading it.

I'm halfway through reading Lone Women, and I thinking that if I were a women (I'm a guy), would several of the revelations surprise me so much? Read The Changeling as your next Victor Lavalle novel. That story envelops the reader, and you feel so peaceful and cozy...until you do not. Highly recommended. And I think you, as father of a son, will feel especially the joy and the terror of The Changeling.
