Totally agree, Strengthening them is one thing and using them is another, you can have strong abs but you may not engage them when running.
Today I run with my abs, I concentrated on my abs movement ( left, right, up, down) , I did not think of my upper or lower level movement at all. Your upper( Shoulders, Arms) and lower level( Hip and legs) movement are connected and synchronized through your abs, Abs initiate and synchronize the movement between upper and lower level of your body.
When abs are engaged, your upper and lower level will follow. Your legs with come up more and your arms and shoulder rotate and have more movement compare to when your abs are not engaged and creating a resistance between upper and lower part. Kick boxing, the knee kick, to give more power, they use the core muscles to lift the knee, use the core muscles to lift up your legs when running!

I think its like a support exercise and doesn't make you run more far or fast directly. If you don't do support exercises you get injured and not know why and will just be angry and think you have bad luck.

I aGREE. I do core routine for chest abs back. But i do it more with weights than the only body weight stuff. I don't like only body weight stuff and yoga for mid section. One reason is I am a cutting-edge athlete and i do not need to build only endurance. Need some strength too. Lifting near max weight makes muscles stronger bigger and heavier. But a small amount of weight for a normal runner won't affect us in a negative way. This is more for elite runners i think. These are good though but I stopped back pain from easing into weights. I know there is more than 1 way to do it. I don't understand planks and some exercises like that honestly and why i would want to do them.

I think "rest" is also an exercise, rest periods in plank or workout also have advantages. Why doesn't your 10 minutes have a break of at least 10 seconds?
