Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment.
You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. They can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even from plant-based materials (like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum). Or the Polestar 3 e.g. is using pine oil. And even if you still create a leatherette seat the classic way with petroleum base without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is very little in comparison to how much oil is used for other car parts or how much oil is burned for fuel or heating. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en). So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.

Depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the first misuse case, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the priority use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down or even murdered on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse?

@@autogefuehl thank you for your responsiveness.
I see some problems in your arguments:
      1) You write about reducing CO2 emissions cause ditching animals skin, but in reality you don't reduce CO2, because animals growing for meat, not for car leather. Leather is a useful side effect. I saw some leatherette in difference cars and always i can feel difference with close eyes. I like thick natural leather, it's much nicer.
      2) I love animals and the same against animal cruelty. In your link we see examples of terrible cruelty. Animals have their throats cut without stunning... European regulations give muslims permission on the viоlence murdеring on rеligion grounds, it's called "HАLАL FOOD". It's very big problem about it the most people silent. Animal husbandry is not equal to violence. There are technologies of killing without torment for animals. The life of animals should be comfortable. Efforts should be aimed at combating violence, not animal husbandry.
This is not a whim, meat is necessary for a person to maintain health, and it's also very tasty for many people.

I got my Lucid Air GT just over a year ago. Aside from the convenience to its range and charging speed that make long journeys effortless, I am most attracted to its driving dynamics. The car has a comfortable ride in every driving mode but becomes noticeably more firm in the higher modes when pressed. I particularly enjoy driving rather quickly on mountain and canyon roads and the Lucid is ideal for that. While I have not driven it over about 240kph it does feel quite stable and fully controlled at that speed.
The Lucid Air is nicely furnished and will be quite comfortable for passenger on normal trips, but it is really designed for the driving enthusiast, someone who gets pleasure from engagement in the driving experience yet needs a practical car.

Both Mercedes and BMW nowadays make pretty ugly vehicles but BMW drives better, are faster (than equivalent Merc models) and better built quality which I’m not shy to admit. My dad’s Mercedes vehicles of the 80s were more comfortable than many of those made today. Mercedes better get this act together otherwise they will be left behind.

Teslas first principles are best. No key just carry your phone (Bluetooth). No ionizers chemical perfumes. Medical grade filtration/bioweapons mode. No levers buttons. Most functions are intuitive and automatic-shifting, driving (FSD), profiles transferred vehicle to vehicle (from phone key-no buttons to push). Infrastructure. Supercharger is best function and price. Efficiency built in-even rich people don’t want to waste money.

BMW has all that and better self driving for highways when u actually need to use it. Also tesla interior just screams cost cutting. They use "minimalistic" design as an excuse to cut manufacturing cost down and drive their profit margins up. It's just a code word for coat cutting. Having to scroll while driving for every little thing is not a luxury. Tesla has no apple carplay, no HUD, no gauge clusters in some models, no ambient lighting, air suspension..etc. nothing feels like ur in something special or expensive when ur inside a tesla. It's just blah

One point however needs to be addressed : while prices of cars are spiralling upwards, quality and durability is dwindling down with the eventual replacement of these cars at very premature ages.

Escaped to a lane with rear- oncoming freeway traffic. Other cars you think about the power and 0-60. Plaid you don’t. It’s there. Plaid “cheating” with figures. Still blows away most everything.

Hi Thomas, if it wasn't for the looks, I would definitely go for the BMW. I don't know exactly what is wrong but BMW's new designs and I aren't good friends. Tesla's technology is probably the best, and the car is hence the best EV I guess, but I don't think Tesla's quality matches its high level of technology, unfortunately, neither does Mercedes' by the way, which is too bad. Lucid is as you say simply too expensive, though it looks awesome. This leaves me with Genesis(for the moment China is out) which I think looks really great, not least inside, and is built by Hyundai which also is known to build really good cars.

I realise that these comparison videos make use of previous reviews, but the careful comparison is especially useful in one place. Thank you Thomas and Brian.
If I look at road engineering clearly BMW and Mercedes still have it probably in that order. The suspension, 4W steering, and general poise are still wonderful. For luxurious comfort, I agree with Thomas that BMW now have that. Where the German models here have lost it is that they seem to mistake glossy, novelty, gadgets, and complexity for luxury; in my view luxury is usually defined by the discreet absence of those things. The interior which looked most luxurious to me was that of the Genesis, despite its other faults. I also liked the Lucid, partly because of Brian’s believable hard sell, but also for the future promise. I liked the Tesla but there are at least two showstoppers for me: everything on a touch screen which could be on a touch screen; and no Apple CarPlay. Besides I think the Plaid is dangerous in the way that really old time Porsches were dangerous.

I disagree with the idea of avoiding animal products altogether. Personally, I prefer leather over vinyl or pleather. It's worth noting that leather is actually a byproduct of the beef industry, so it's not as if using leather is somehow less renewable than other materials. It's true that electric vehicles are not entirely environmentally friendly, since the process of mining minerals for battery production can have a negative impact on the planet. So please, everyone needs to stop with the save the planet crap when it comes to EVs.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  Рік тому +1

The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at ua-cam.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/v-deo.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.

Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Having owned Teslas since 2013, it has the worst interior materials, worst quality for both interior and exterior. Also, the NVH is rather bad in all Teslas. Exterior color choices are minimal and basic. Ditto for the interiors. Their service is astoundingly bad. Which is why I will never buy another Tesla.

I drove the car fairly hard around the corners and over rough roads to evaluate the suspension and ride. The car feels very refined, composed and luxurious. Materials are excellent. Couple of downsides were the numb, soft steering (both of my Teslas have numb steering too), somewhat surprisingly - more body lean than I expected for a BMW, even in sport mode. However, all the other pluses far outweighed the minuses.

@@andrelegeant88 There's no error or anything. Just keep an eye your charge level in every 50 miles or so, you'll be alright. I think the point about charging infrastructure is well made. In the UK I would not own an EV if I could not charge at home, ideally on renewable electricity. The public infrastructure here is more or less ok, but the prices can vary widely and are no longer obviously cheaper than petrol.
The point about batteries is also well made. I am far from sure that ever larger and heavier batteries using rare minerals is the way to go. The extra weight really does affect the handling and efficiency. An ideal EV might have a small battery to smooth out the demand for power with an ICE generator running on something renewable such as hydrogen.
The variation in performance depending on weather is not something unique to EVs but I suspect we take much more notice of it than we did with our ICE cars.

A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ua-cam.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/v-deo.html

More and more natural materials are rising: ua-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/v-deo.html

For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ua-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/v-deo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse?
We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

BMW are trying too hard to be different their design is overly complex and ugly it's been a long time since BMW has us given us a beautiful designed car. They need to get rid of all their designers because they've lost their way by heading completely in the wrong direction. ☹☹☹☹

All of them have too big limitations and remind in some aspect of French cars from the 80s and 90s.
I have no desire to spend money on such test vehicles, nor do I understand how these unfinished-looking vehicles receive so little honest evaluation. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a parallel world.
There are almost perfect cars and now new models with half the quality are coming out for twice the price and this is not addressed in the test? Irritating.
