Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. They can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even from plant-based materials (like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum). Or the Polestar 3 e.g. is using pine oil. And even if you still create a leatherette seat the classic way with petroleum base without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is very little in comparison to how much oil is used for other car parts or how much oil is burned for fuel or heating. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en). @@autogefuehl thank you for your responsiveness. I see some problems in your arguments: 1) You write about reducing CO2 emissions cause ditching animals skin, but in reality you don't reduce CO2, because animals growing for meat, not for car leather. Leather is a useful side effect. I saw some leatherette in difference cars and always i can feel difference with close eyes. I like thick natural leather, it's much nicer. 2) I love animals and the same against animal cruelty. In your link we see examples of terrible cruelty. Animals have their throats cut without stunning... European regulations give muslims permission on the viоlence murdеring on rеligion grounds, it's called "HАLАL FOOD". It's very big problem about it the most people silent. Animal husbandry is not equal to violence. There are technologies of killing without torment for animals. The life of animals should be comfortable. Efforts should be aimed at combating violence, not animal husbandry. This is not a whim, meat is necessary for a person to maintain health, and it's also very tasty for many people.
I got my Lucid Air GT just over a year ago. Aside from the convenience to its range and charging speed that make long journeys effortless, I am most attracted to its driving dynamics. The car has a comfortable ride in every driving mode but becomes noticeably more firm in the higher modes when pressed. I particularly enjoy driving rather quickly on mountain and canyon roads and the Lucid is ideal for that. While I have not driven it over about 240kph it does feel quite stable and fully controlled at that speed. The Lucid Air is nicely furnished and will be quite comfortable for passenger on normal trips, but it is really designed for the driving enthusiast, someone who gets pleasure from engagement in the driving experience yet needs a practical car.
I don't care if my EV comes with Leather, matter of fact, I Prefer it! I am also okay with High-Quality Luxurious materials like how the Lucid Air has though.

Every time I have driven a Tesla, they did not feel like a luxury brand. Just a little better than standard. I would argue a Lexus is far more comfortable inside and FAR better build quality
Thanks a lot for committing to this video. I really enjoyed the 3 hours, and this is a topic that really interested me. At the end, Genesis is my kind of brand because you get a lot of value from the money you pay. I also like the fact they are underrated as conspicuous luxury cars get stolen the most.
The i7 wins by far. Best quality interior, tech, performance, luxury, quietness, comfort. Genesis is from 5 yrs ago in terms of tech and design. Tesla is ikea, Merc is not where it should be based on price. My 2 cents By the way, turning nomi off was really funny 😂
I have used the EQS 580 in some of the coldest winter temperatures on the planet, north central WI. It has never provided less than 275 miles of range despite not having a heat pump. Using eco on the AC and keeping your speed at 65mph it still provides longer range than most cars do in summer. I would love to see actual numbers on how much better the heat pump does.
@Autogefühl I dont take my jacket off when I drive. On eco plus the cabin still can maintain 65 degrees without a problem. As Im sure you are aware when it -30 outside, the last thing you want is for the cabin to be at 80🤣
The fact that BMW is overtaking Mercedes for luxury and comfort should be a big concern for Mercedes as they are meant to be the bench in luxury for vehicles in their class. This is coming from someone who owns a Mercedes
@@ogabchemseddine1654 I’m certainly not a BMW fan boy and I don’t own a BMW (although I had 3 successive modes several years ago), I own a Mercedes. I’m just stating facts. Both Mercedes and BMW nowadays make pretty ugly vehicles but BMW drives better, are faster (than equivalent Merc models) and better built quality which I’m not shy to admit. My dad’s Mercedes vehicles of the 80s were more comfortable than many of those made today. Mercedes better get this act together otherwise they will be left behind.
Would have been good to see Lucid Air replace Tesla in this video as it is a more "real" luxury car. Eluxe cars are definitely the next generation of luxury
Teslas first principles are best. No key just carry your phone (Bluetooth). No ionizers chemical perfumes. Medical grade filtration/bioweapons mode. No levers buttons. Most functions are intuitive and automatic-shifting, driving (FSD), profiles transferred vehicle to vehicle (from phone key-no buttons to push). Infrastructure. Supercharger is best function and price. Efficiency built in-even rich people don’t want to waste money.
BMW has all that and better self driving for highways when u actually need to use it. Also tesla interior just screams cost cutting. They use "minimalistic" design as an excuse to cut manufacturing cost down and drive their profit margins up. It's just a code word for coat cutting. Having to scroll while driving for every little thing is not a luxury. Tesla has no apple carplay, no HUD, no gauge clusters in some models, no ambient lighting, air suspension..etc. nothing feels like ur in something special or expensive when ur inside a tesla. It's just blah
Many thanks for creating such informative and high quality content. This video commentary was special in particular as car production sustainability should feature higher up in the manufacturer's agendas. One point however needs to be addressed : while prices of cars are spiralling upwards, quality and durability is dwindling down with the eventual replacement of these cars at very premature ages.
Limo rear seat Is not something most of us need. Our kids are in back. Good rear seat room is enough. We are the drivers (or FSD). Hatchback design is needed-we can put large amounts of luggage/bicycles.
Plaid power gives you such peace of mind and safety especially on Autobahn (I’m I’m US) I had a ludicrous model S And it got me out of a dangerous situation safely because of the power. Escaped to a lane with rear- oncoming freeway traffic. Other cars you think about the power and 0-60. Plaid you don’t. It’s there. Plaid “cheating” with figures. Still blows away most everything.
One pedal driving makes regen always there. Very rarely do you move foot to brake. 200k mile model S with original brakes including pads (and without permanent magnet motors)
Hi Thomas, if it wasn't for the looks, I would definitely go for the BMW. I don't know exactly what is wrong but BMW's new designs and I aren't good friends. Tesla's technology is probably the best, and the car is hence the best EV I guess, but I don't think Tesla's quality matches its high level of technology, unfortunately, neither does Mercedes' by the way, which is too bad. Lucid is as you say simply too expensive, though it looks awesome. This leaves me with Genesis(for the moment China is out) which I think looks really great, not least inside, and is built by Hyundai which also is known to build really good cars.
none of the genesis come even close to the nio et7. nio et7 is as comfortable and quieter than the bmw 7 series, it was tested its not my opinion. genesis lacks in everything including tech. you can ask your nio to program in advance and do anything if the battery percentage gets at 15 or 10% which is something that tesla dont do and i own a model y. nio is crazy and i have seen some model s owners switching to the et7 when they test drive it in europe. i can tell my nio to turn off everything that is heavy on battery like ambient light, adequate volume, unnecessary memory usage, massage seats etc etc so it can be more efficient and the car does it. not even mentioning the benefit of battery swap which will allow me to get a 200kwh battery with 1500km range 3 years from now possibly
I realise that these comparison videos make use of previous reviews, but the careful comparison is especially useful in one place. Thank you Thomas and Brian. If I look at road engineering clearly BMW and Mercedes still have it probably in that order. The suspension, 4W steering, and general poise are still wonderful. For luxurious comfort, I agree with Thomas that BMW now have that. Where the German models here have lost it is that they seem to mistake glossy, novelty, gadgets, and complexity for luxury; in my view luxury is usually defined by the discreet absence of those things. The interior which looked most luxurious to me was that of the Genesis, despite its other faults. I also liked the Lucid, partly because of Brian’s believable hard sell, but also for the future promise. I liked the Tesla but there are at least two showstoppers for me: everything on a touch screen which could be on a touch screen; and no Apple CarPlay. Besides I think the Plaid is dangerous in the way that really old time Porsches were dangerous.

I disagree with the idea of avoiding animal products altogether. Personally, I prefer leather over vinyl or pleather. It's worth noting that leather is actually a byproduct of the beef industry, so it's not as if using leather is somehow less renewable than other materials. It's true that electric vehicles are not entirely environmentally friendly, since the process of mining minerals for battery production can have a negative impact on the planet. So please, everyone needs to stop with the save the planet crap when it comes to EVs.

Having owned Teslas since 2013, it has the worst interior materials, worst quality for both interior and exterior. Also, the NVH is rather bad in all Teslas. Exterior color choices are minimal and basic. Ditto for the interiors. Their service is astoundingly bad. Which is why I will never buy another Tesla. My next EV will be either the MBZ EQE sedan or the BMW i5. Leaning towards the i5 right now, but it’s a touch choice.
@@Danin4985the i5 has amazing interior feels like it floating with their new air suspension (from rolls royce since BMW owns them) they took alot of their tech implemented into it. Looks amazing too. Definitely has a presence. Like a big bulky bmw muscle car
@@G82Watts I test drove the I-5 yesterday, and I have to agree wholeheartedly with you. This car just wowed me on the test drive, and I am a picky evaluator. I drove the car fairly hard around the corners and over rough roads to evaluate the suspension and ride. The car feels very refined, composed and luxurious. Materials are excellent. Couple of downsides were the numb, soft steering (both of my Teslas have numb steering too), somewhat surprisingly - more body lean than I expected for a BMW, even in sport mode. However, all the other pluses far outweighed the minuses.
If i remember right Lucid, and EQS has more range than Model S and the range different between Model S and i7 is not that significant. And if you drive in big european cities CCS coverage is great. It also offers more 350kw chargers than Tesla SC.
Lucid and bmw i7 have more range then tesla. Are u serious? Go watch the carwow video where they drive the cars until they die. Bmw won. Edmunds Car reviews did the same thing. As stated in both range test. Bmw gets 85% of its stated range. Tesla gets 75%
I love Mercedes but BMW have upd their game in the luxury game and clear winner here. EQS is such a let down and that "hyper" screen is a massive let down. More of an over kill and anything but luxury
Copycats??? Everyone copies everyone else!! Pablo Picasso quoted as having said that “good artists borrow, great artists steal.” It is racist to accuse the Chinese of having this as a "value". Japanese carmakers copied a lot after WWII, before they could become Master Artists If Africa could copy, they would be richer continent given their vast resources!
Lots of respect to Tesla for what they did for this industry, but to put an S in a category of luxury vehicles is a downright joke. Price alone cannot be a qualification for such a thing. But I could be wrong. There was a time when you could drive an Italian super car off the dealer's lot, and it'd fail... what do I know?
@@SDot-dp9xm Not debating sales figures. Tesla sits under Premium and Prestige in every chart I read. Only Tesla fan-boys and Americans will beg to differ.

Mercedes and BMW have the feel rich factor. Tesla looks like a cheap car. Nio looks quite good. Conclusion, German are able to please their customers with comfort for cars at this segment.
What I'm really torn about is whether to get an EV at all. Between charging infrastructure, weather influence on batteries, charge times, range, and the fact lithium-ion batteries are likely a stop gap, I keep worrying whether I should stick to an ICE.
@@fakamada not really. When planning a trip that would go through the Ohio and Pennsylvania turnpike, there are only charging stations once every 150 miles or so. That doesn't leave much margin for error. Regarding weather impact the video notes how much cold affects the Mercedes. Regarding price, the BMW 540i is $20,000 cheaper than the i5 M60 (though 540i hits 0-60 about a second slower because it's ICE).
@@andrelegeant88 There's no error or anything. Just keep an eye your charge level in every 50 miles or so, you'll be alright. Heat pump is a must and you cannot complain about the weather in winter, unless you buy an EV with heat pump. There's no comparison left between ICE and EV. ICE is garbage. If i5 is expensive, then stick with the i4.
I think the point about charging infrastructure is well made. In the UK I would not own an EV if I could not charge at home, ideally on renewable electricity. The public infrastructure here is more or less ok, but the prices can vary widely and are no longer obviously cheaper than petrol. The point about batteries is also well made. I am far from sure that ever larger and heavier batteries using rare minerals is the way to go. The extra weight really does affect the handling and efficiency. An ideal EV might have a small battery to smooth out the demand for power with an ICE generator running on something renewable such as hydrogen. The variation in performance depending on weather is not something unique to EVs but I suspect we take much more notice of it than we did with our ICE cars.

In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? Chinese cars are light years behind software. I will crash this car against a guard rail. Tesla infotainment interface is far more advanced than Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Apple CarPlay looks very dated now.
This argument is as old as Betty white. The model s is definitely cross shopped with all cars in this comparison. It actually has caused sales of the s class to tank. Especially here in California.
@@Jackie-Brown It s not old. Model S is not a luxury car. It s no near BMW or EQS in finishing, comfort or ride quality. And before you start with tech. The other cars are full of tech as well. Is the Model S quicker than EQS and i7 ? Yes but that has nothing to do with being luxurious.

You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at ua-cam.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/v-deo.html). BMW are trying too hard to be different their design is overly complex and ugly it's been a long time since BMW has us given us a beautiful designed car. They need to get rid of all their designers because they've lost their way by heading completely in the wrong direction. ☹☹☹☹
All of them have too big limitations and remind in some aspect of French cars from the 80s and 90s. I have no desire to spend money on such test vehicles, nor do I understand how these unfinished-looking vehicles receive so little honest evaluation. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a parallel world. There are almost perfect cars and now new models with half the quality are coming out for twice the price and this is not addressed in the test? Irritating.

I see some problems in your arguments:
1) You write about reducing CO2 emissions cause ditching animals skin, but in reality you don't reduce CO2, because animals growing for meat, not for car leather.

The Lucid Air is nicely furnished and will be quite comfortable for passenger on normal trips, but it is really designed for the driving enthusiast, someone who gets pleasure from engagement in the driving experience yet needs a practical car.
thanks for the feedback !

Thanks, glad you enjoyed!

The i7 wins by far. Best quality interior, tech, performance, luxury, quietness, comfort.
Genesis is from 5 yrs ago in terms of tech and design. Tesla is ikea, Merc is not where it should be based on price.
My 2 cents
By the way, turning nomi off was really funny 😂
OMG that two tone bemer is just gorgeous 😍
BMW Mercedes 👍
Yes trade all the Ferraris for Aston Martins and Jags
I have used the EQS 580 in some of the coldest winter temperatures on the planet, north central WI. It has never provided less than 275 miles of range despite not having a heat pump. Using eco on the AC and keeping your speed at 65mph it still provides longer range than most cars do in summer. I would love to see actual numbers on how much better the heat pump does.
Eco AC indeed makes the difference because it heats up the car later. Depends then if u can live with that
Thanks for the report!
@Autogefühl I dont take my jacket off when I drive. On eco plus the cabin still can maintain 65 degrees without a problem. As Im sure you are aware when it -30 outside, the last thing you want is for the cabin to be at 80🤣
Hehe. Will get heat pump with next model year change afaik. Lets see
Genesis G80
The fact that BMW is overtaking Mercedes for luxury and comfort should be a big concern for Mercedes as they are meant to be the bench in luxury for vehicles in their class. This is coming from someone who owns a Mercedes
Yeah I agree
You're a BMW fanboy, not even owner lol
@@ogabchemseddine1654 I’m certainly not a BMW fan boy and I don’t own a BMW (although I had 3 successive modes several years ago), I own a Mercedes. I’m just stating facts. Both Mercedes and BMW nowadays make pretty ugly vehicles but BMW drives better, are faster (than equivalent Merc models) and better built quality which I’m not shy to admit. My dad’s Mercedes vehicles of the 80s were more comfortable than many of those made today. Mercedes better get this act together otherwise they will be left behind.
It was an easy task for BMW after Mercedes spent all their budget dolling up the EQS like a cheap bordello.
Bmw has been ahead of mercedes for most aspects for decades
Nice video which proves again that while other brands catch up Tesla is still the one to beat in 2023
Would have been good to see Lucid Air replace Tesla in this video as it is a more "real" luxury car.
BMW all day

Many thanks for creating such informative and high quality content. This video commentary was special in particular as car production sustainability should feature higher up in the manufacturer's agendas. One point however needs to be addressed : while prices of cars are spiralling upwards, quality and durability is dwindling down with the eventual replacement of these cars at very premature ages.
Thanks 🙏
Thomas vs Nomi! 😅
😂

Good thoughts!
none of the genesis come even close to the nio et7. nio et7 is as comfortable and quieter than the bmw 7 series, it was tested its not my opinion. genesis lacks in everything including tech. you can ask your nio to program in advance and do anything if the battery percentage gets at 15 or 10% which is something that tesla dont do and i own a model y. nio is crazy and i have seen some model s owners switching to the et7 when they test drive it in europe. i can tell my nio to turn off everything that is heavy on battery like ambient light, adequate volume, unnecessary memory usage, massage seats etc etc so it can be more efficient and the car does it. not even mentioning the benefit of battery swap which will allow me to get a 200kwh battery with 1500km range 3 years from now possibly
BMW
I'd love to pickup a Lucid Air but Lucid's service network is incredibly weak. Barely any repair centers aside from the west coast.
I absolutely love the blue
Thanks for the feedback!
Old vid but true, pound for pound the q60 is it.
Que bueno El programa gracias

I disagree with the idea of avoiding animal products altogether. Personally, I prefer leather over vinyl or pleather. It's worth noting that leather is actually a byproduct of the beef industry, so it's not as if using leather is somehow less renewable than other materials. It's true that electric vehicles are not entirely environmentally friendly, since the process of mining minerals for battery production can have a negative impact on the planet. So please, everyone needs to stop with the save the planet crap when it comes to EVs.

I believe Lucid is the best EV in many aspects: long range, luxury, engine, aerodynamic and fast charging.
Any electric car is better than Tesla.

Fantastic comparison. The Tesla impressed me the most as a non fan in the past! I think it could use a radical restyle but it's come a long ways.
Thanks keep following!
Not in luxury segment. It s even the last one.
Tesla S/ light years ahead in battery technology and range. fantastic infrastructure that none of the other EVs have.
But horrible interior
@@j800q I would have to agree, the Mercedes and BMW are absolute gaudy, with way too many buttons and knobs that only confuse the driver.
Mersedes bens 👍👍👍👍
I love Mercedes but BMW have upd their game in the luxury game and clear winner here.
EQS is such a let down and that "hyper" screen is a massive let down. More of an over kill and anything but luxury

It is racist to accuse the Chinese of having this as a "value".
Japanese carmakers copied a lot after WWII, before they could become Master Artists
If Africa could copy, they would be richer continent given their vast resources!
G80 does have a small frunk under that lid, just like the other e-GMP cars.
Nah, you are correct. A Tesla is not a luxury car. It's an expensive appliance... like a wifi connected washing machine.

So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.

What I'm really torn about is whether to get an EV at all. Between charging infrastructure, weather influence on batteries, charge times, range, and the fact lithium-ion batteries are likely a stop gap, I keep worrying whether I should stick to an ICE.
Just please follow up the current state for EVs. Things you say are more like pre-2020 era, lol.
I am doing 1300 km drives in my Tesla every few weeks. I would rather take the train than an ICE. Whenever I drive one I feel like Fred Flintstone.

Animal free seats? What has this to do with cars?
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment.
You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat.
Irritating.
