During my last year of undergrad, I did a Canadian Literature course and our topic was residential schools. I don't think I stopped crying that entire semester. Some of the books we read that I would recommend are: Stoney Creek Woman, They Called Me Number One, Indian Horse, and The Outside Circle.

The serpent and the wings of night is an amazing fantasy romance series. I would only read it if you like fantasy, romance, Vampires, and the main character facing hunger games like trials. It is also not YA it is New Adult.

What Moves the Dead was interesting, especially some of the side characters, and is a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. If you liked her Nettle and Bone, she just came out with a novel-length fantasy like it called A Sorceress Comes to Call. The Last Unicorn is definitely not a children’s book, but it’s definitely beautiful and whimsical. There’s an animated movie from the 80s if you enjoy the book.

I would recommend anything by Frances Hardinge, her books tend to be mg/ya but absolutely worth it for older readers too, very complex and nuanced fantasy with a focus on character development, platonic relationships & worldbuilding! I've just finished Unraveller and loved it. Human Acts by Han Kang is another new favourite for me, but it's definitely a difficult read: harsh, visceral, and raw, but also necessary.

I'm just going to make a wild suggestion for a challenge for yourself next year: reading fantasy and sci-fi with bright and fun colors/spines. A couple I'd suggest: Axiom's End by Lindsay Ellis (red cover and spine, second book is blue, third is green), Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky (bright yellow spine), and The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky (red spine).

The books are: Contagion by Erin Bowman (mystery thriller with sci-fi), Just the Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica, Ghost Station by S. A. Barnes (mystery thriller with sci-fi), Dead Silence by S. A. Barnes (mystery thriller with sci-fi), Necrotek by Johnathan Maberry (mystery thriller with sci-fi), Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes, Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak, The Third wife of Faraday house by B. R. Meyers, How to solve your own murder by Kristen Perrin, and A House with Good bones by T. Kingfisher. I hope you like some of these.

Braiding Sweetgrass is sooooooooo good. I highly recommend it. It's lovely and the author narrates it herself.
I think that we are obliged to educate ourselves about the people who are indigenous to this land and were murdered/genocided (especially because we live on their stolen land). I have not read this yet, but I always get An Inconvenient Indian recommended to me and it's on my TBR. I also have Starlight Tour on my TRB. A Mind Spread Out On The Ground is also really good - especially the audiobook.

The best way to read Harrow the Ninth and Nona the Ninth is just to accept that you are going to be completely and utterly confused for the vast majority of the book, until the author chooses to let you in on the truth -or part of it. I also enjoyed Gideon but was confused, and I still absolutely loved Harrow and Nona. I'm a new fan of Ashley Poston, and The Seven Year Slip is probably my least favorite -but it's also one that's closer to the author's heart. I recommend reading the note at the end of the book to get an explanation of the author's headspace.
The last book I bought (yesterday XD ) was "Howl's Moving Castle," "You, Again," "Young Gothic," "The Shadow Cabinet," and "The Once and Future Witches."

There are some elements that didn't age well, but it's more reflective of the world the book is set in, rather than horrible views of author - i thought it approached its subjects with complexity and thoughtfulness they deserved.

Just a warning, the other books in the Hannibal Lecter series are various levels of not good. There’s a theory that Thomas Harris was harassed into writing more of the series due to the popularity of the Silence of the Lambs movie.

I think The Serpent and the Wings of Night might be New Adult so I don't know that you will like it.
You might maybe like To Shape a Dragon's Breath which is adult book, the narrator is an adult in her culture, but has a prominent boarding school setting so it has a lot of crossover to young adult readers (so maybe you won't like it???) the audiobook is great though.
The other fantasy book my friends are into this year that's definitely adult is Witch King by Martha Wells but for some reason I'm thinking you've already tried that one? 🤔

The Last Unicorn is not a kids book imo. It’s one of my favorite books and I absolutely recommend it! I think it’s one of the victims of people assuming it’s for kids just because it’s fantasy. Granted, it’s not like there’s anything inappropriate for kids in it that I can think of, so in theory a kid could read it. But the writing style would be a little too difficult for most kids imo.

I want to read the first, it was recommended to me a lot.
This week I break my book buying ban because I found books that I was looking since a long ago on the web of my second hand library.
I don't like the cover of What moves the dead, I prefer the Spanish version (Qué mueve a los muertos in Spanish and Què mou els morts in Catalan), I like this author. I specially like The seventh bride.
The color purple is a hard book.
One of my friends always said I HAVE to read Gideon, but I'm waiting to the announcement of the last book.

I heard the Defiant is good again 🤞 and I have a feeling you might not like The Serpent blah blah. But I might be wrong :D

One of my other book clubs just readWhat Moves the Dead, we all gave it 3☆ish.
I just finished The Beauty by Aliya Whitley which was a much better fungal horror book!
I LO♡ED the Seven Year Slip!
I read the Hannibal books when I was like 15, I don't know how they've aged back then I thought they were OK but not great.
What Moves the Dead is based on The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen poe, I'd read the origonal after (it's super short and free audiobooks on YT)

I'm currently reading Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, it's on track to become my new best of the year! It barely qualifies as a romance but is a great feminist historical fiction (late 1950s-early60s)

The Lost Village by Camilla Sten is my best mystery thriller of the year

Defiant is closer to the feel of Skyward. Better than the departure that Cytonic took. You do need to read Evershore..

I really liked the color purple but it didn't made me cry and i think you won't too. The movie based in the book with Whoopi Goldberg is very good (deviates a chunk but i still loved it). About the Hannibal Lecter books, from what i know (and i didn't read none of them) the only that are good to read are Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs. The others the author was pressured to write so that they could make movies out of them. Now i don't know how they stand those two regarding mysogeny and other stuff. The movie SIlence of the Lambs is one of my favourites, and never saw the others (don't want to).

I recommend The Justice of Kings by Richard Swan if you haven't read it already. Good fantasy read.
