    Such a great and clear explanation of line levels and a pre amp 'not' included nor suitable for vocal/mic input.
    I had a suspicion this was the case. Will be after a different solution for my purpose. Great review!

    Thanks for the review! I got the 6 channel mixer through your link. I’m in Canada and the 8 chan is $13 (25%) more and the 6 had a $5 coupon on top so it was under $40 with tax. Replacing a Yamaha MW10c and I can’t believe the space saving.
    I’m just using it for playing a few synths, all line level stuff, and most of my outputs are 1/4”, usually stereo, so it’s perfect and 6 is just enough (drum machine, lead and bass synths).
    I was surprised how clean the output is. I was expecting to hear some noise floor with everything on max but it’s so clean - the Moog sounds as harmonical as ever.
    I can highly recommend this. I got a Volca Mix a while back thinking it’d be a good complement but even set up as advertised (even has picture on the website with the exact mini Kaoss pad I have), it doesn’t support being hooked up to an external effects unit properly as the send doesn’t convert the mono inputs into stereo so you get effects only on one side. And it’s wayyy noisier. Haven’t tried but I’m sure it’ll even fit in the Volca rack due to the size.
    Thanks again for the video, I’m quite happy so far!

      There is one thing i don't understand exactly about the outputs. is A dedicated to 1-4 inputs and B to 5-8 inputs or is each of A and B are duplicated outputs for all the 8 inputs ?
      if you use 8 mono inputs, you only need to use one output for those 8 inputs? correct?
      I need another Moukey and was thinking about connecting each mixer to one audio interface input?

      I am not exactly sure about how to connect the 2 of them to a 2 input Audio interface, since I got now 3 outputs available from the Moukeys.
      would be great to have a tutorial about how to use multiple Moukey mixers with one 2 inputs A/I
      Hoping for a 20 input Moukey !

    Thanks for the review! Nice to hear your comparison portion as I own one for my IEM for live performances (vocal, guitar, mix in from keyboard player and aux send from sound eng.)and I’m trying to figure out what’s causing a small amount of loss of high and low frequencies. Sounds like I can’t blame it…. For now 😂 Could be too cheap of a balanced headphone cable or perhaps a bit of interference. Swap cables and/or I might try a faraday cage hack with copper tape in the box. But as you mentioned, awesome cost effective product and for someone like me who wants to step up their game but not spend 100’s, this is perfect.

    Thanks for the review. Do you have any recommendations for a mixer like that but with pan control and basic compression and 4 independent mono channels? Would that be the Yamaha one? I’m also wondering about multi-track recording - potentially the Zoom H6 would give me all of that in a compact package but higher price point. Any thoughts? (And apologies for bouncing my thoughts. I just like your pragmatic approach.)

      I’m looking for a new one myself actually - Radial Key Largo is amazing and actually doubles as a DI box but it’s $$$$! Been looking at one that’s 1/5 the price from Art Pro audio as well; but might just start using my Yamaha mixer - it has balanced XLR outs so that basically is a built in DI box as well

    Great video Tony. I have the Alesis Multimix 4, just for home use with keyboard and iPad (lessons and play along). What would be the advantage of the Moukey?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 роки тому +2

      Hey there! In that case no advantage whatsoever (unless you want more line in ports).
      If you remove the mic ports, effects, mic and guitar pre-amps, and phantom power off of your Alesis and add a couple more line level inputs you've got a Moukey. The only use you would have for it on top of your Alesis would be to add more line channels (for example you buy a second keyboard like a small synth or something and want them both hooked up to the Alesis at the same time).

    Thanks for the thorough review! I just got the 4 channel version so I could mix my computer, my partners computer, and my TV to the same speaker (Google Home Max). It works, however there are instances where the positions of the wires will cause a loud buzzing sound. I'm sure its regarding the multiple wires touching each other and sometimes a slightly misaligned or not fully seated input. I'm using braided cables 3.5mm cables with adapters on every MouKey port. Is this my problem? Should I get better, thick cables? Would that stop buzzing from wires touching? I can also secure our setup so the wires will be tied down and never touch, but we are just in the setting up phase and the shuffling of wires is causing a lot of feedback at the moment. Thanks Tony!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 роки тому +2

      I'm not an expert in this stuff, but there are probably lots of potential sources for the buzzing unfortunately; kind of a trial and error thing where you may have to try and rule out various potential causes. Maybe the adapters, maybe the cables; how are you powering the Moukey? I've heard some people say they get some random noise if powering it from a device as opposed to a wall port (if you're powering it from one of your devices maybe try plugging it into a wall outlet/power bar).
      Not sure if this was much help, hope you get it figured out!

      @@PianoTone Thanks so much, yeah I figured I would have to troubleshoot but was if you'd noticed anything with interface in your fiddling with it. I've pretty much figured out it's the cables touching would sometimes cause buzzing, but I was worried if it had to do with power delivery or if an amp was needed. I also checked online and found the USB versus outlet solution which did help but not totally fix it. I'll just have to keep the wires apart, it's been working great so far!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Рік тому +1

      Thanks a bunch! You only need an audio interface if you're recording audio (it converts an analog audio stream from lineouts/headphone outs on a keyboard, or a microphone into a digital audio stream a pc/app/software can understand). If you're just using your keyboard as a MIDI controller and using sounds in your DAW then you don't need an audio interface.
      If you wanted to record the actual SOUNDS of your keyboard into an audio track in your DAW then yes you would need an audio interface.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 роки тому +1

      Not being able to see all your setup I can’t guarantee anything (and I’m also not a sound engineer :) ).
      But if both your mixers can send output with 1/4” cables, then you should be able to mix those together with the moukey just fine - the output on the moukey is also 1/4” so as long as that is compatible with whatever your camera is expecting then …. Should work (note that if your camera is expecting a balanced XLR input that I haven’t been able to confirm whether the outputs on the moukey are balanced or not) - so you might end up with an unbalanced signal which could add noise if it is a long distance.
      Hope that helps!

    Hi, thanks for the video, it was very helpful. I have a question about the power consumption. I saw that the adapter gives 5V and 1A. The 1A is probably more than the mixer needs, so I am wondering: how many mA does the mixer actually requires? I am planning to use it with a portable speaker that has a built in usb port that produces 500mA, so that I don't have to use a powerbank (I am a busker too and as you know we already have to deal with to many batteries :) ) I am hoping it wouldn't exceed the 300mA, otherwise, it'd be to tight, I guess...

    Huge note: DO NOT use the splitter dual TS to TRS to connect pianos, synths Etc to a mixer with the TRS input unless there is a phase inverter, otherwise you will lose quality and volume towards the center of the stereo image due to phase cancellation, and yes this can happen inside the wires in the same way it does when speakers are misaligned. It happened when I would use my Novation peak, and I was confused why when I panned the synth it would get much much louder

      I’m not familiar with that Roland mixer, but using the moukey to premix some stuff is one of its best uses. You’ll just want to premix things that you’re ok with having on the same channel(s) on your Roland (all you can premix is relative volumes, so if there are other things happening on your Roland like effects etc all the inputs you premix on the moukey will have to share those settings on your Roland.

You can specify stereo or mono for the output, so I’m assuming that will allow a TRS stereo signal out of each port. The markings on the back also say L/R which I assume would imply output A=L and B=R when you specify output as mono and use TR instead of TRS cables.

    Hello, I really appreciate you posting this! But I'm still a bit confused when it comes to this mixer. I currently have a Scarlett 2i2 audio interface but need more inputs. I have 2 synths and a beat machine and am tired of having to constantly plug one in and the other out to record in my DAW. All my devices use L/R channel outputs. I'm looking for a way to hook up and record these instruments with both their left and right channels going from my interface to my DAW for further editing. Is this mixer capable of doing that? And if so would it be say (synth 1 Left goes in line 1 and 2 right go into line 2 and so on?) Because I read in certain reviews that this mixer doesn't record actual left and right channels seperately and another that said to play in stereo 1-4 is L and 5-8 is R. If using both left and right channels. So yeah, I'm still a bit confused and just want to be able to hook up 3 of my instruments in stereo using both L/R channels to my interface. So if you could tell me if this is possible and correct me in whatever I quoted that may be wrong, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Рік тому

      To be honest I'm not 100% positive (I never did anything like that with the mixer); but my thoughts are you would connect all your L's to the A stripe (1-4) and all your R's to the B stripe because the A and B stripe are each tied to their own output. As far as the "stereo/mono" switches for the output you might have to play with that (the documentation for the mixer is pretty bad and no help). That's how I would try it at least.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 роки тому +2

      Do you mean mixing multiple computer's headphone out ports through mixer to some speakers? This should work for that I would think. If that's what you mean:
      Headphone outs have some type of amp in them (so signal can be loud/noisy - so when connecting start with pc volume low) and they are stereo ports, so make sure you use either:
      a) TRS cable (2 stripes on connector) into headphone on pc, and TRS going into mixer, set that mixer port to stereo OR
      b) TRS cable into headphone on PC, with splitter cable to 2xTR plugs (1 stripe on connector) to 2 channels on mixer, set both of those channels to mono
      For stereo output same idea with output port; whether you need a single TRS or a TRS to TR splitter depends what you are connecting to at the other end; if it is a single stereo in use a single TRS, if it is a L/R in use a TRS to TR splitter.
      Hope that helps; if I'm wrong in what you are trying to do give me some more details

      Definitely didn't switch the Yamaha to mono; had L/R line outs connected to 2 inputs on the Yamaha, same thing on the Moukey.

      @@PianoTone That is very interesting.. It sounds so much better with the Moukey and its almost as if either the Yamaha (aside from also coloring the sound) gives a less wide stereo image or perhaps the Moukey provides a wider image by default... do you not hear the difference when you listen in headphones ? Its so drastic to me that it sounded like mono vs stereo...

      I didn’t notice any significant drops with mine (my ears aren’t the best though ;). Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

    What diferences between option 1 and option 2 y 9:50??

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  7 місяців тому

      End result not much really; option one sends both L & R signals through a single stereo cable to one stereo channel on the mixer; option 2 splits the stereo signal into two individual mono channels (one L and one R).

    Hi thanks for the video! I've recently bought the 6 channel version, I want to run some synths/drum machines/samplers into the mixer which have L/R outputs. Would a 6.35mm 'TRS Stereo Jack to 2 x 6.35mm Mono Tip Ring Cable' work to go into a single input on the mixer?
    Was hoping this would so I can use all 6 channels, and assuming I would need to press the stereo button, however from watching your video you say that 2 x TS cables running into 2 channels/inputs of the mixer is needed which means I would only have 3 channels available for gear with L/R outputs. Is that correct?
    Any help much appreciated! :)

      The TRS to 2xTR splitters (I'm pretty sure) are meant to be used in the other direction; so if your gear had a stereo headphone out the TRS side goes into your gear and you're still using up 2 ports on the mixer anyways. I wouldn't recommend connecting it the other way around it might be bad for your gear. I'm not an audiophile myself, but had one explain the "one way" ness of those cables to me once before. I'd use the 2 TR cables from your L/R ports.
      Another example is a single TR to TRS cable I had THOUGHT might be a solution for sending a stereo signal from a keyboard with only stereo headphone out into a mono amp input; was told by a guy in a music store "yeah that should be fine" and then found out no, it will fry your headphone out because it's meant to go the other direction only. It's meant to take a mono signal (TR side) FROM a mono source like a guitar amp and duplicate that into a "stereo" (same mono signal both sides) on the TRS end to plug into a stereo system etc.
      Hope that helps!

      @@PianoTone thanks for the reply! I have now worked it out it's fine to use a 'dual TS to single TRS cable' to connect gear with L/R outputs to a single input on the mixer it just has to be bi-directional which most are

      @@waysiiide Thanks for that, that's good to know. When you say "bi-directional" are you referring to the cable or the port on the mixer?

      @@PianoTone no worries, yeh referring to the cable 👍
