Man, Fist of the North Star is a true Magnum Opus. Some may see it as just a typical shonen manga/ anime, but the ripple effect it has had is truly legendary. Also one of the finest examples of a positive male figure in modern times, who's influence can be seen even today.

Also worth noting is that HnK(2005) is far and away the most thematically accurate fighting game of all time. It's broken to hell and back in every sense of the term, a fact which readily can be summed up in how it's tier list is not determined by which character(s) have an infinite (_the whole cast_ can do that) but rather simply by how _easily_ a given fighter can achieve the coveted Touch of Death in a single combo. Kenshiro doesn't sit at the top of that list, the game's systems don't grant him such favors simply by virtue of his status as the story's original protagonist... But he has all the tools, a player with sufficient dedication can bring his style to life just the same. There are many titles in the fighting genre containing glitches or other unintended exploits where competition is undeniably brutal and unforgiving... But in no other case is this sheer unrivaled level of tension so _perfectly_ suited to the setting and cast. It's not a particularly accessible experience, it takes a certain kind of person to actually enjoy facing down an opponent competent enough to generate that threat level, but there are still plenty of dedicated folks in Japanese arcades (as well as online via emulator) still doing just that to this very day.

48:07 wowowowowowow souther "channeling points" are NOT in random places, his body is kinda inverted, so something that should be on the right is on the left and so on, it's a real and rare condition called Situs inversus. I guess for the manga is the same thing but more extreme
1:12:49 There isn't incest at work at here. The incident with Shuken and Ryuo happened about 2000 or 1800 years before the main story, so it's so long that Hyoh and Sayaka are at best very very very distantly loosely related. They certaintly aren't cousins.
They are basically the royalty of the wasteland. Some inbreeding is likely mandated. ua-cam.com/video/u8PZ7noEzcA/v-deo.html Also don't get those unique physical characteristics without some very particular selective breeding I suppose.
My memory is hazy, wasn't in the first chapter the sky was blackened out with nuclear dust (which is odd because the would mean it is cold in not hot). Then the last thing Raoh did was swing his fist to the sky and cleared the sky (from chi or just force from his fist) and it restored the world weather patterns. Maybe that's wow the ocean appeared again in chapter 2? My head hurts now from trying to make sense of that.
42:15 I'm pretty sure Mamiya is still wearing a pants as you can see the fold on her calf, it's just that her pants weren't shaded. 45:03 I think this just simply implies that "with the power of love you can change someone's fate", we know how Rei had feelings for Mamiya and his love was strong enough to save her from certain death.
Oh, wow: you really did not pay much attention or had a terrible translation at hand; but I would be inclined on the former; a few things: * Mamiya does not start to go half-naked in a super short skirt - the has tight pants and the "shirt" is actually the last part of her skirt; * Ken and Raoh are not cousins - their ancestors thousands of years ago were brothers, but not their parents; * Toki hitting his tsubos on his legs was not meant to kill him at once, just to shorten his life even more.
You are the definition of the "well ackshually" meme. It wouldn't come off so self obsessed if you would have just given the notes without the bullshit at the start. Just because you use nice punctuation and grammar doesn't make you any less pedantic there Bald Potter! See, I could have left the insult out and that would have almost been constructive criticism wouldn't it? Instead you're over there mad because so old asshole on the internet decided it would be funny to shit on you for 30 seconds then ignore you.
Toki stepped down from the Hokuto Shinken succession because of his radiation poisoning. Not only it severely impaired his fighting prowess in a new era that absolutely needed the best warrior possible, it would also compromise his ability to train a proper successor on his own and in time. Both he and Ryuuken agreed that their best second option was Kenshiro, despite all his shortcomings in terms of strength, skill and resolve. He was still rough around the edges, but Ryuuken hoped he would eventually shape up and that Toki could be of assistance. ... And yeah, there's a crapload of stupid retcons in Hokuto no Ken 2, it gets pretty nonsensical quickly and the timeline gets cramped as hell. The way everyone revolved around Yuria was already stupid enough as it was, this manga really didn't this on top of all the other bullshit. Starting from the Souther arc, the manga also suffered from a "kleenex character" problem: characters who appear in one scene, get an establishing flashback or two if they're lucky, and get killed during the next scene to build cheap drama. The anime tried to mitigate this by giving those "kleenex characters" more screentime, but it was still pretty apparent that their quality declined following Rei and Toki's death. Shew, Ryuuga, Juza, Toh, Shouki, Sayaka and others are pretty egregious examples. Btw, Juza's element is the Clouds, not the Sky. As for Fudo and Rihaku, you mixed up their elements. Fudo is the Mountain and Rihaku is the Ocean, not the contrary.
i grew up watching the old '86 animated film and loved it so much. def wasn't old enough to watch it, but that didn't stop me from sneaking the old vhs tape my brother had 😂 i still watch it occasionally and have been dying to watch the show and read the manga. such a good concept, even if it is a bit out there.
I watched the whole thing 3 times and it has one of my favourite soundtracks in anime for sure. Kenshiro is easily one of my favourite characters in anything along with Auron(FFX) and Kiryu(Yakuza). correction: The six big nanto styles are not the main nanto styles that split off into others, they are just most powerful practitioners of nanto seiken, the nanto rokuseiken. Also, the 108 branches of Nanto are a reference to 108 Stars of Destiny from the chinese novel Shui Hu Zuan.
One of the best parts of the first Ken's Rage game was Mamia had a special move where she'd bump into someone and then fall on her ass like she got knocked back. Then said person would walk up to her ("Evil" characters would have an arrogant walk while "Good" characters would walk like they were gonna help her up) and after they got close she'd pull out these spikes and stab them in the chest. But if the person in question was one of the 9ft tall throwaway tough guys she'd stab them in the balls instead lol
Souther fight is different. He was born with his heart being on the right, insted of the left, like all normal people do. So in their final confrontation Kenshiro used his op af power to MOVE HIS HEART TO THE LEFT, so those pressure points could work.
my dad was a mega-nerd who caught the anime bug a few years before it hit big in the west. He had the original 8-comic Viz series of FotNS, so one of the first things I ever read involved watching these beef muffins punch eachothers' guts out of their heads. I never had any context for the series beyond ch. 8, but this video confirms it was all about what I could have expected. Good shit.
A lot of errors in this. 1. Ken was always the strongest but he was too soft hearted thats why he lost to shin the first time and why he needed sadness to achieve the ultimate art. 2. Rei death is important because the nanto stars fade when hokuto appears thats why they all die. 3. Souther is not immuned to channeling points he has his heart on the right side of his chest which is a real medical condition and his pressure points are reversed. Ken figures that out when he hears his heart beat during their second fight. All this is explained did you pay attention. Also they never said there was no more ocean

Fist of the Blue Sky is wild, I think the one scene I will remember the most is when Ken (don’t remember if his name is actually Kenshiro) is just in a hotel room, naked as the day he was born, starts flirting(?) with a male hotel attendant? It’s so strange I remember legally acquiring the series and watching it in public and realizing I can’t watch it in public anymore.
Yea, that scene was in the anime (which is pretty bad sadly) but not in the manga. Actually, Kasumi Kenshiro isn't flirting with him, he just tells him to take off his clothes because Ken needs to pose as hotel staff. The guy blushes when Ken tells him to take off his clothes tho, lmao
Glad I have the manga of fists of the north star it’s so good and I love it. I’ve been collecting the new hardcover reprints that viz has been putting out.
Funny, Charles Buchinsky was given his stage name “Charles Bronson” by actor Steve McQueen. And now I can’t stop thinking about Kenshiro saying “my finger point” right before poking someone until they explode thanks to the Kung Pow footage.
I presumed the writers got the idea for the art from Sinanju from the Destroyer book series except blowing somebody up Remo and Chuin could do everything Kenshiro could do
SUCH MANLY TEARS 😭. Man the recentish 6 OVAs were so lit too, amazing animation as well! I watch them yearly...WITH A BOX OF KLEENEX BY MY MANLY BEDSIDE TABLE.
Kenshiro is Potencial Man done right. Both Toki and Raoh were better fighters than him at the beggining, but Kenshiro was chosen because his insane level of empathy gave him the potencial to rise the Hokuto Shinken to new heighs. And I love that
Awesome vid, man ! Must have been a pain to write down, talk about it, film, and especially the edit (You just did a feature documentary film, at this point !) And yeah, like Dragon Ball, you can very clearly tell when was the true narrative ending as the author had prepared, and what was the unneeded padding Jump forced them to do long after their heart were not in it anymore. The Raoh fight and the Frieza arc, you could already tell both Buronson&Hara and Toriyama were already trying to drag it out to try and tire the audience out, but it severely backfired and people were just more and more addicted to it, making them have to churn out even more. Anything post Raoh or Frieza was just whacky af. Shueisha just can't help themselves, they just had to ruin great works by overworking their authors to their future impending death (literally, as we saw recently with Toriyama sensei). I mean, when was the last time you saw one of their hits actually stick the landing, and not be either getting an abrupt boot, or dragged for 1500 chapters to many ?
I really wonder what the master of HnK was thinking by picking Jagi as a potential successor? I mean did he think..yeah this dude has got what it takes!

@n.kosters4757 I have the same question lol. Are they doing it?!
It's sad that you skipped over Juza of the Clouds like that. But apparently he was made into more of a bad ass in the anime. The man was able to fight beyond death for a few moments.
When I was a little kid my brother rented fist of the North Star from our local video store and it was one of the very first animes I've seen
Rei's suffering segment was the hardest thing in the whole anime.
Also there was an arcade game called fighting mania that was super fun to play.
"Governments fell and the world was plunged into anarchy and chaos where the only rules come from a persons conscience.. It turns out, a lot of people didn't have those." Fuckin beautiful.
*damn*
Woah! Don’t flippin swear dude. There are kids here, you sicko.
Toki was originally supposed to be the successor... but he got irradiated, so his life was in jeopardy. Kenshiro was good enough to be the successor, and he was considered to have bigger chances to pass the art on, so ultimately he was chosen.
Toki's illness was expanded to be his fate. Before the holocaust he was fated in toki gaiden which was written by Buronson and Hara and Illustrated by Yuka Nagate
@@brothersofwrath4785 Is that the same as the Toki Gaiden movie? I hated that plot. It was much nicer when Toki was just a saint who sacrificed himself rather than him having a mortal illness, getting hit by a log and then getting cancer.
@@stephenpardue2052 the OVA was made by North star pictures(Hara's animation studio)
"Humane Face-Breaking Fist" is such a good name
Remember kids, and Repeat after me: Hokuto Shinken CAN DO ANYTHING ! ! !
Dragonball is the father of all shonen
But Fist of the North star is the grandfather of all shonen
That honor belongs to the creator of Atom Boy Osamu Tezuka. Fist of The North Star is the Son of Shonen
Both started a year apart and stuff like Ultimate Muscle codified core aspects of the Jump formula at that point.
So that means Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daisho is the ancestor of Shounen. Well, WSJ to be specific.
Man, it’s been years since the boys touched fist. The difference between the content from then and now is crazy!

wowowowowowow
souther "channeling points" are NOT in random places, his body is kinda inverted, so something that should be on the right is on the left and so on, it's a real and rare condition called Situs inversus.
I guess for the manga is the same thing but more extreme
And with that D&D monk reference you have once again earned a thumbs up. You never fail to pepper in references that speak to my heart 👏🏻
1:12:49 There isn't incest at work at here. The incident with Shuken and Ryuo happened about 2000 or 1800 years before the main story, so it's so long that Hyoh and Sayaka are at best very very very distantly loosely related. They certaintly aren't cousins.
THANK GOODNESS
They are basically the royalty of the wasteland. Some inbreeding is likely mandated.
ua-cam.com/video/u8PZ7noEzcA/v-deo.html
Also don't get those unique physical characteristics without some very particular selective breeding I suppose.
Y’all took me for a ride!! I was already interested in the Manga and now I’m really interested! Seen all the other movies/series. Time to read now.
Mike this is TOP NOTCH stuff. Great writing and editing! Appreciate you bud
Oh, wow: you really did not pay much attention or had a terrible translation at hand; but I would be inclined on the former; a few things:
* Mamiya does not start to go half-naked in a super short skirt - the has tight pants and the "shirt" is actually the last part of her skirt;
* Ken and Raoh are not cousins - their ancestors thousands of years ago were brothers, but not their parents;
* Toki hitting his tsubos on his legs was not meant to kill him at once, just to shorten his life even more.
Souther arc?

i grew up watching the old '86 animated film and loved it so much. def wasn't old enough to watch it, but that didn't stop me from sneaking the old vhs tape my brother had 😂 i still watch it occasionally and have been dying to watch the show and read the manga. such a good concept, even if it is a bit out there.
Love this story, and love the emotional beats that drive it. Even the recent games, from PS3 and 4, depict those emotional moments pretty well.
Raoh actually does have the trident move in the HNK fighting game lol. And it does lead to punch..punch..punch. It's part of his infinite I think
Thank you for covering this epic manga/anime. Fist of the north star and dbz were my favorites as a kid
Great video, the artwork for the manga is amazing, and his one of my favorite manga and favorite anime as well.

Ayo, Castlevania Portrait of Ruin music? 11/10.
Great summary of FotNS though! Been wantin' to learn more about this manga.
I watched the whole thing 3 times and it has one of my favourite soundtracks in anime for sure. Kenshiro is easily one of my favourite characters in anything along with Auron(FFX) and Kiryu(Yakuza). I was fortunate enough to be in Japan for the exhibition in Ginza last year. Got a bunch of merch including some storyboard post cards and a dope af art book.
SUCH A LONELY NIGHT 🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🗣️🗣️🗣️
I cried when I found out Auron's backstory & I love all of Yakuza. You have great taste in characters!
When I was living in Hawaii my buddy Mike got me the complete subtitled dvd series back in like 2001. It’s so dope. I still have it now I want to bust it out and rewatch it.
Hokuto No Ken “Fist of the North Star” is such a raw series always will be one of my favorites
Could you also make a companion video about all the sequels/prequels/spin-offs?
correction: The six big nanto styles are not the main nanto styles that split off into others, they are just most powerful practitioners of nanto seiken, the nanto rokuseiken.
The Savior as Century's end. You a Shock!
Souther fight is different. He was born with his heart being on the right, insted of the left, like all normal people do. So in their final confrontation Kenshiro used his op af power to MOVE HIS HEART TO THE LEFT, so those pressure points could work.
glad to see people talk about the father of shounen and why a lot of troupes of shounen exist, the original anime is a masterpiece
my dad was a mega-nerd who caught the anime bug a few years before it hit big in the west.
So ur G Gundam review pops up in my feed and I'm like well this will be the second video of URS I would watch and I got to going through ur videos and now I'm on number 4 of the more longer ones . Love ur work bud and I'm now a sub thanks.
So much cry guy. Also when you said it’s a dog eat dog world, it reminded me of how my buddy thought it was doggy dog world and for decades didn’t understand why harsh worlds with brutal conditions where man must achieve survival through the overpowering and subjugation of others was so doggy dog.
Snoop dog is out there appreciating your brother 😂
Speaking of how awesome bonsai pop is, these hour plus long videos from bonsai pop are what I live for
Fist of the Blue Sky is wild, I think the one scene I will remember the most is when Ken (don’t remember if his name is actually Kenshiro) is just in a hotel room, naked as the day he was born, starts flirting(?) with a male hotel attendant? It’s so strange I remember legally acquiring the series and watching it in public and realizing I can’t watch it in public anymore.

Yea, that scene was in the anime (which is pretty bad sadly) but not in the manga. Actually, Kasumi Kenshiro isn't flirting with him, he just tells him to take off his clothes because Ken needs to pose as hotel staff. The guy blushes when Ken tells him to take off his clothes tho, lmao
@@Daimonas Thank you for clarifying, still just as wild.
Just waiting for more news on the remake. I can't believe it. It's my top 1 favorite series
Glad I have the manga of fists of the north star it’s so good and I love it. I’ve been collecting the new hardcover reprints that viz has been putting out.
Great video. The 2nd half of the manga exists because Hokuto Shinken can do anything 🙂 You wa Shock!!!
Funny, Charles Buchinsky was given his stage name “Charles Bronson” by actor Steve McQueen. And now I can’t stop thinking about Kenshiro saying “my finger point” right before poking someone until they explode thanks to the Kung Pow footage.
First heard of this from the arcade game in the 90s, where you had to punch the pads, ever since then loved the vibe of this series
This series brings back so many memories. So many explosions of lasagna.
i didnt expect them to drop a video this early now i have something to watch :)
Must have been a pain to write down, talk about it, film, and especially the edit (You just did a feature documentary film, at this point !)
And yeah, like Dragon Ball, you can very clearly tell when was the true narrative ending as the author had prepared, and what was the unneeded padding Jump forced them to do long after their heart were not in it anymore.
I didn’t know your game Mad max
I really wonder what the master of HnK was thinking by picking Jagi as a potential successor? I mean did he think..yeah this dude has got what it takes!

Grew up watching the Anime in French with the green blood and white cuts, saved money for the english Manga when I relocated back to Asia, and now keep reading it again every year to-date (I am 50 now) on digital format, never lost the appeal for me, agreed on the first arc, the rest was just indulging in all things Kenshiro.
I met the Actor Gary Daniels in the Philippines with family friends, stand up guy, he really got into the character and even named his son Kenshiro! He should do a remake and play Ryuuken 😄
Toki IS that one Korean comic of a guy who got shot and ends up in severe pain for several decades, getting married, marry his daughter off, then finally dying on his bed from old age.
Similar to another comic by the same author with the guy getting shot and he spent the rest of his day doing stuff he wanted to do before dying.
I'm at the 10 minute mark realizing how badly Dub of the North Star fucked me up for this series! 🤣
