Shout out to my 10th grade history teacher Mr. Frazier for letting us bring in whatever we wanted to watch - lunch time club we watched hellsing ultimate. That guy was rad.
Hellsing's world is so interesting that it feels like the story we got feels almost like a mere dip into what it can offer, it's a shame that Hirano releases stuff at such a slow pace cause I'd definitely love to see more of this world.
Leaving so much mysteries open is what makes stories like Hellsing so good, too much exposition and explanations disenchant the world. Just look at Star Wars and all the endless pieces of media explaining the magic of it, now it feels hollow and boring because of that (that, and terrible writing)
9:00 I'm not certain I agree. Seras was already dead the moment the Vampire took her hostage. His question clarified that she was able to have a choice in the matter. She did choose to be a vampire. In many ways choosing death is the more respectable route , at least to him. But humans refusing to give up are the only thing that interests him in his long life. Seras choosing vampirism and then clinging to her humanity is a complicated subject for him. I'd have to read the books again to get a deeper analysis on this but boy howdy does the TV linger on it.
Exactly, Alucard at that precise point in time most likely had all his usual restrictions in place locking out the bulk of his powers, so it wasn't like he could just choose summon a familiar on the spot to backstab the false priest and prevent Seras from being harmed. Pointing and shooting back was practically all he could do, anything else available to him right then would put him at risk letting the target escape... Which Alucard was never going to accept even if his orders might have allowed for a loophole prioritizing a human's safety.
Alucard: The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. An advanced long range reconnaissance aircraft capable of Mach 3 and an altitude of 86,000 feet. Integra: You sure do seem to know a lot about it. DO YOU EVEN READ MY CHRISTMAS LIST?!?!?! It was right there, sorry

“Women referred to as female dogs hold great adoration towards large armaments” - not my comment originally, but I just love it so much I had to share... ❤
I'd argue that Alucard is a prescient proponent to Absurdism which is a philosophy that argues that reality is meaningless but irrational or absurd, and trying to find meaning is fundamentally irrational. Albert Camus argued that the only way to reconcile with the absurd is to accept the absurdity of existence and to "revolt", in effect creating our own meaning despite that absurdity, thrive by becoming absurd. Alucard is an absurd man who actively makes the situation more difficult for his own enjoyment. "there is no fate that cannot be surmounted by scorn" - Albert Camus
there is a recent video talking about the clothing style of the characters and how similar they are to alchemical processes and psychology too. good search for those who want to.
The Major is perhaps one of my favorite villains of all time. He's delightfully hammy, weak and small and objectively pathetic, but at the same time is imposing, larger than life, a mythical figure in the things he accomplishes with such meager resources at his fingertips. He's evil and perhaps a monster in his own right, but also adamant in his humanity and unbreakable will. He is beholden to nothing but his own wishes and motivation to slay the monster, retaining his individuality when the offer of power was given in his weakest moment, rejecting the supernatural to accomplish what no other character had a hope at in the series, all within the span of a single human life.
As a huge Hellsing fan. Hellsing Ultimate is my favorite show of all time, I'm happy to see someone cover it. For it being such a great series I feel as it doesn't get as much coverage and attention it should be getting.
I always appreciated the concepts it explores, but I find it interesting that you consider it horror. It certainly has horror elements, particularly imagery, but it was always much more about the action for me, after Van Winkle there is very little down time and every major story beat is accompanied by epic full page explosions or sweeping views of battle ready undead troops. It was always full action, it just told a great story full of style at the same time.
Cool little detail with the hand positing of alucard and anderson at 31:15 - the monster's hand position is an upside down cross, and the monster of god's is a cross.
Yeah, but it TOTALLY is Argentina. Most non-Brazilians think that our capital is Buenos Aires and we're just an extension of Argentina... which pisses Brazilians off, especially because we're socially, culturally and economically vastly superior to Argentina. Also, we never gave shelter to Nazi war criminals.
It must be said. (I say on every Helsing video I see) I love all the versions of Helsing: manga, anime, Ultimate. But my absolute favorite version is the Helsing Ultimate Abridged series here on UA-cam. "And Yes! This is a JoJo reference!"
I honestly think it is the superior version. Hellsing takes itself way too seriously. With Abridged playing it more as a comedy the actual emotional moments hit a lot harder as they really emphasize the change in tone and stakes of the moment.
That MIGHT have been true…IF you disregard the Sera’s/Pip bloody kiss build up and payoff and the Brazil arc. The scene where Big A “joins” the soldiers in the elevator is absolutely jizz-worthy the first time. 😩
Seras,as a part of a task force fighting a vampire, would have some knowledge of vampire lore. When Alucard asked his question, she knew he was intending to shoot her and turn her into a vampire

15:33 Nah, as someone with Scottish heritage and who's accent kind of surfaces a bit when I'm angry or annoyed I actually found the phonetical spelling of Anderson's accent kind a nice touch since it's not something a lot of Mangakas do or separate very well. From a youtuber who I always appreciated for his nuanced takes and manga/anime retellings, you completely lost me at 23:00 Born and raised Israeli, served in the army and lost life long friends to the 7/10 attacks, I might not like my government but we sure as hell not "Apartheid". We grow up alongside arab Muslims, arab Christians, western Christians, gay people, bi people, trans people all of whom are free to live their life here unlike any other place in the Middle East. Apartheid means "separating, setting apart", yet all those who claim this is Israel have NEVER been here, never treated by an arab doctor, never spoke with a Sudanese refugee running his own shop, never seen the kindness and colorblindness we have for our fellow man. All other places in the middle east, these people would be either treated as slaves or executed, a fact which horrifies me as a man with western sensibilities TAUGHT at schools. You'd think someone who said in his own video "...this guy just wants to create a state of war for his own enjoyment, he's trying to speed run the most fucked up villain category..." can't see the bigger picture of this Israeli war where on a holiday families were tortured, raped, butchered and kidnapped from their homes and nature parties by people who's own charter calls for the death of all Jews. I know Bonsai pop would never read this, most people in the comments wont, and if you have and are still here I thank you for reading all the way through. 15 years ago when I was in Japan and already a fan of Hellsing, I went to Mandarake and found two manga books which were a Hellsing Halloween/Nightmare before Christmas inspired, very cool!
perfectly sums up why this manga/anime is so good it isn't just a sweet bunch of battles, it is an exploration of what humanity is and what it can become and why our choices do matter so much in this life, as a man of faith I thoroughly enjoy when people wrestle with this question because you are meant to and alucard is the perfect example of it in the story, the only thing that is missing is redemption which is why I wish there was more mention of God Himself in the story but hey they still did a pretty good job all things considered, Hellsing will always be one of my favorites for the story it chose to tell!

not to nit pick but "protagonist" is not synonymous with "hero" it just means the person the story is following, so yeah he kinda is the protagonist
I was about to comment this
You should definitely never read Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson.
Yeah in jojo part 4 Kira was written as the protagonist for the second half. You were Kira on the run from josuke

Love that MvC1 logo in the background.
Alucard is definitly one of the protagonist in the serie.
This was fucken awesome
I love how the characters in hellsing speak, I'm not a native speaker, so I rarely get the chance to come across the more "formal" of the english language
