Joy, I did “enjoy my ride” watching your trip in the “Joymobile.” Your video is one of the best at capturing what Tesla road trips are like. Tesla road trips are the best, so much more enjoyable than any of my pre-Tesla [ICE] road trips. I have taken many road trips in my 2015 Model S and 2018 Model 3, several at over 600 mi/day. I also have watched many Tesla road trip videos, starting with Bjørn Nyland’s first trips in “Millennium Falcon,” his 2013 Model S. Again, this video really captures the feel of what it is like.
I think you found a good idea for Tesla to improve their software. Would be nice to see an option where you set a minimum state of charge at your destination and the Tesla navigation can then calculate accordingly.
I use and love that app but have only used the free version so far since we don't travel that often. I normally use it to plan my trips before leaving and just put the stops into the nav in the car as I go. Didn't notice anything in your video about whether the car preconditioned the battery for supercharging when you were putting your destinations in the nav but I'm assuming it did. If I want it to not precondition to much before arriving, I just put in the town where I'm going and wait to put in the supercharger as my destination as I arrive closer. This gives me a little more time at the supercharger to finish eating or using the facilities without having to move my car due to idle fees if the location is fairly full. As always, really enjoy watching your videos!
Another awesome video Joy. It's great to have you back.... I'm leaving on a 1600 mile road trip in a few days, the longest one so far in my Tesla, and I will try out A Better Route Planner this time.
Hello Joy. As someone who has taken a number of trips from the SF Bay Area out to Jackson, WY and Boise, ID, I have some experience using ABRP and the Tesla app. My conclusion is that they really have different purposes. ABRP is wonderful for planning, while the Tesla app is better for use in-car. I've found that the Tesla app simply can't be beat when actually using the car as it does a better job than ABRP in calculating range considering topography and speed. There are quite a few errors in the ABRP map database, where (for example) it assumes the speed is 45 mph when it's actually 65 mpg....big difference. The Tesla app doesn't seem to have any such errors. So, for planning, ABRP is great (although you need to be careful that the assumed speeds are correct), but for going from point A to point B the Tesla app is much more reliable.
Thank you for sharing your feedback Dan. I agree for trips that don’t need frequent stops to charge, the native navigation works great. However if you want to arrive with a certain charge in my case, then ABRP works better.
I like your channel, cool Tesla stuff with minimal snooty holier than thou vibe. Unlike other Tesla channels ahem solving money problem ahem now you know.
I thoroughly enjoyed this road trip. I almost got emotional when you said you were returning to where your joymobile was born. I can't wait to visit the Fremont factory. I wanted to go to battery day but the covid thing is making that impractical as I live in Atlanta. Joy, I do hope you are a shareholder of Tesla. You sure are a great spokesperson for the Tesla experience.
Joy, this was a fun video. I need to get out on the road for a real road trip. Post covid I plan to head to the Bay. Maybe we should do a road trip with others. That app seems really good. Will check it out when I make the drive.
Thank you. It was like being right there with you. I would have driven there to meet you if I had known. I live north of San Francisco, an hour and fifteen minutes from the factory.
Was really nice to see you again, Joy! Thanks for the capture at 18:26! Dizzyness, I think you may have been dehydrated? Bananas sure does help for me too.
Yes I was getting dehydrated and it was simply too hot for me since I got there earlier and was already exposed to the heat. Sorry I didn’t get to catch up with you much, but I’m sure there will be a next time!
Thanks for sharing. There’s no chance of having road trips here in Hong Kong (and hence no use for the app), but nonetheless it’s captivating watching how Tesla owners in other places use their EVS 👍😷
Welcome back again Joy, we missed you! Great informative video, I will try A Better Route Planner one day. I think they should build out as many Supercharger centers in California just like In Kettleman City, it would certainly help!
A tip I've seen in hot weather is to place a damp cloth over the charging handle of the older v2 units. It will keep the cord cooler, allowing your charging rate to stay high. Tesla should add Apple CarPlay/Android Auto to their infotainment unit so you could display your better route planner on the main screen. Those v3 chargers are awesome!
Enjoyed your road trip Joy! Must have a great time driving along the 5 all the way. Too bad you couldn't get into the Kettlemen City Tesla Lounge. It would have been an exceptional experience. I was lucky to experience the lounge right before the pandemic happened when I was doing a coastal road trip last year. I'm sure you would have a lot to say going in. Hopefully next time you will be able to experience the lounge and refreshments they offer.
Thanks Joy - another enjoyable, informative video. One suggestion for next time would be to include the trip energy graph to understand the efficiency over the duration of the trip.
I didn't even know they had an app! I used abetterrouteplanner.com when we took my Model S from Cleveland to Woodstock, NY. It was our first road trip and I really enjoyed the flexibility the site provided, especially letting me choose options to guarantee the battery will be at a certain state of charge when we reached our destination. Good stuff!
Im happy you posted a video bc staying home have been stressful and this helps ik it sounds stupid but it did . and you gotta tell my parent tesla don't run on gas . lol
Your video makes me want to take a road trip!! Glad you’re liking the app. I tried it briefly in February of this year and it seemed kind of buggy but may download it again. Question. When you pull up a route in the Better Router Planner app and share it with your Tesla, will the recommended charger stops from the app go to your car or will Tesla make its own planned stops? In other words, do you use the Tesla navigation separately for each leg of the trip between charging to follow the plan from the Better Route Planner app? It would be great if the entire trip with the recommended stops from the app make it onto the Tesla navigation system
Getting ready for first trip. Once you know which charger station will be used for your next stop, do you select it on the nav screen so the car will condition the batteries for the most efficient charging? Maybe that’s just in colder climates where the batteries need to be heated first? Thanks
That’s one way of doing it, or you can enter in final destination and car will tell you which chargers to stop at, how long to charge, and precondition battery before arriving at each charger. Enjoy your road trip!
Joy, did you use the web browser in the car to launch ABRP? I have the app on my phone but wasn’t sure how you got the app to display on your console. Loved the video as we are planning a trip from the Bay Area to La Quinta.
@@TeslaJoy Does the Tesla navigation and abrp follow the same routes? Or did you program each abrp stop into the Tesla navigation? As an aside I completely understand you like having the Tesla navigation up but if a person wanted the abrp I think someone said to get there by using the browser and go to your abrp account or maybe it was google to the Tesla theater website and they may have the app there.
Hi, sometimes they have the same route and sometimes they don’t. It depends on how much SOC you want to arrive at each charger and at your destination. And yes I heard you can use the web version but I haven’t tried it in the car.
Tesla Joy you showed the UI, but ot would have been nice to see what the Tesla system said in comparison to the BRP for example: Tesla arriving at Hawthorn with 22% and BRP arriving with 25%
I didn’t want to run both at the same time as they gave me different stops so I manually navigated to each supercharger. But the beginning comparison did give you an idea.
So there's no way to set a higher arrival SOC in the Tesla route planner? Seems odd. That's exactly how I prefer to route plan. EVTRIPPLANNER has had this feature for years too. And I wish all SC were pull in. and 261 Wh/mi in that heat and at freeway speeds is insanely good.
both tesla navigator and a better route planner say 10 min or 15 min. Well i do not like that i would rather wait 30 or 40 min and not have any low battery issues. I took a 1000 mile road trip and part was in the mountains. So I charge it up every time.
Without traffic I was driving 80-85mph on AP. And AC worked fine as my windshield has film that blocks 70% of UV so it’s a lot cooler than without the film.
I don't own a Tesla....yet. But I checked out A Better Route Planner on my computer a few months ago, trying to put in a destination in British Columbia from rural Pennsylvania. Compared to Google Maps I found it very unintuitive as to how to set up a trip. I think I would really have to work at mastering the software. So far as your reassurances of road trips being easy, don't forget that you are in California, Tesla home base. Try road tripping from Pennsylvania through Nebraska and North Dakota, just as an example, and you will find that it is not so easy. What measures did you take to protect yourself against the virus when using the public restrooms?
There’s no issue doing cross country trips as a woman I was meeting up was driving from RI to west coast. Follow her trip here: twitter.com/kimpaquette/status/1275936313745776640?s=21

Hey Alex, I don’t believe you can “port” route from ABRP to Tesla right now. As you saw in video I navigated to each supercharger manually.
