- Here are some of the tips I recommend if you are planning on doing a road trip in your Tesla vehicle! Some of these tips are Tesla-specific, but many apply to other EVs as well.
Before you leave:
- Plan your route ahead of time
- Make sure there is charging at your destination
- Scout out chargers around your destination
Preparing your car:
- Make sure your mobile adapter is in your car
- Reduce weight in the vehicle if possible
- Put on aero wheels to improve range
- Charge up to 100% before you go
- Schedule your departure in the car
- Plug in your destination or next charger into the Tesla navigation
On the road:
- Use Autopilot!
- Set speed, and set following distance to the longest distance for maximum safety
- Use energy tab for more accurate range estimate
To improve efficiency:
- Slow down
- Draft behind Semis
- Turn off or reduce HVAC
Charging stops:
- Leave space between you and other cars charging. Tesla splits power between sister charging stalls
- Back in pretty far, the cable is not very long
- Navigation should tell you how long it will take to have enough charge, and you'll be good to go after that
- Charging etiquette: make sure you move when your car is done charging if you plan on sitting for a while
When you arrive:
- Confirm it is okay to plug in and for how long
- Plug your car in so it stays charged
- Enjoy your destination!
- Learn from the road trip and adjust it on your way home if necessary

Thanks for the tips! I’m looking forward to my first road trip this year. 😎
Thanks for these tips! Much appreciated
Solid tips!
Thanks Andy! Tried to not completely copy your video lol
Great video Alex. Just want to remind everybody that following behind a semi will increase reduce gas mileage and EV distances, but increase the chance of your vehicle being damaged due to the amount of debris getting kicked up by the semi.
Thanks! Yeah that's true. I'm still pretty far back so I usually don't notice stuff dinging my car, but it could be small
Alex Sibila - I used to do lots of driving for a previous job with a little Ford escort. I got great gas mileage following close. What I noticed is that the semi will kick up lots of sand in small stuff that eventually sandblast the windshield of your vehicle. Ended up having to change out the windshield after a few years. I guess it all comes down to how desperate a person is to get that “few more miles”! 👍 😂
Great video and info. We are planning a cross country trip this spring from west to east coast.
Thank you. Well done. Using the small wheel to indicate control is an especially good idea. p
This is a great video! very useful tips
Immensely helpful, thank you!
Of course, enjoy the car :)
Great video!
Great tips & even better b-roll Alex!
Thanks man!
Great tips here mate. Also loving the Hotwheels cars. (Edit - subbed)
Thanks so much!! Subbed to you a few weeks ago. Great work!
I'm about to pick up my vehicle from port in San Diego from Hawaii to take to Arizona and this makes me feel a lot better before I start that 400 mile trip
Awesome! Glad I could help. Best of luck!
Great tips...
Thanks!
The cat had me dying. Great tips!
Haha great to hear 🐱
When planning your lunch/dinner charging stops make sure there are restaurants within walking distance that you like (sometimes the choices are limited and below your preference level). Practically all restaurants during this pandemic provide for take out and publish their menus online, so if you don't mind eating in/at your car you can expand your choices by calling ahead to places well beyond walking distance you can hit before you stop at the SuperCharger. I'd suggest you call well in advance to see how much lead time they need. We called a restaurant about 20 minutes before we would've arrived to find out that they needed 45 minutes to prepare our order. Had to settle for O'Charley's. :-/
Good point!
Poor kitty didn’t get to go on a road trip, LOL. Ok seriously, another good video, Alex. I would add checking tire pressures before a trip even though the TPMS alerts you when there’s a problem. Hadn’t thought about drafting a semi to improve efficiency so I checked a few sites for additional information. Looks like you can save about 40% by following within 100 ft (and greater savings as you get closer). With the debris issue mentioned and the hazard with following that close, I’m not sure that’s worth the risk. Have you given any thought to tire problems while traveling? I’ve seen a place that sells a compact spare along with a jack for Teslas that might be a good thing for a really long road trip. Not sure I’d get that but might consider getting a container of tire sealant along with a 12V air pump. Yes, more trip videos would be good!
I typically do my traveling between city centers so roadside assistance is usually pretty close, and I haven't worried about a spare. I definitely need to throw a fix-a-flat and an air pump in my car for emergencies though!
When visiting family, I like to supercharge (to 80%) at a supercharger that is close to my destination. This way I get there with plenty of miles, and no rush to plug in.
Smart!
Came to see what kind of road-trip tips you had, ended up learning you can change the following distance via the right thumb wheel! Awesome
On my 28hr drive from Colorado the frequent stops every few hours were game-changing. So much better than pushing yourself for 4-5 hours until you run low on gas. Also, having a destination goal every ~2 hours gives you a dopamine energy boost by achieving small distance goals throughout the trip (compared to looking at the map and seeing 17 hours to go, seeing a series of 2 hour destinations is much less mentally fatiguing). I only slept for 2 hours on a 26hr drive and felt great the entire time.
If you ever want to do a video with a performance Model 3 let me know! I'm in Columbus : )
Great to hear! I definitely enjoy taking those breaks, makes the road trip much easier. Shoot me a message on social media or via email (on my channel's "about" tab), would love to check out your Performance 3!
Great tips. One question, can you plan a trip with expected departure time so you can see when you need to plan to stop for the night?
I don't believe so. The touchscreen only calculates based on the current state of charge. I would suggest using a route planner on Chargeway to get some estimated trip times with charging. You can set temperature & speed - which both contribute heavily to reduced efficiency.
Nice video! If you were going to charge at a friends house through a regular outlet. What kind of extension cord would you need?
Thanks! On regular wall outlets it only goes up to 12A typically so any cord rated for that current level and you'll be fine. Most are rated above that anyway.
Alex Sibila awesome thanks. Yeah in my googling I ran into some people saying to get a 12 gauge wire because of heat and some saying it’s fine. So I wasn’t sure what to get.
If you are just using a 120V outlet, an outdoor heavy duty extension cord should be fine. Definitely wouldn't use the same one that people use for plugging in their phones though lol
Never gotta worry about charging since I live in LA
That's nice!
What tips did I miss here??
Great tips! SC are definitely Tesla's "moat" for now. Road trips in a Tesla are not bad at all with all the SC stations nationwide! Oh also, your chapters aren't working. I think it's cause you have the ":" after the time stamps?
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll get it fixed!
when you arrive at a friend's house at your destination, you have to make sure your friend has a 15amp extension cord right? or if they have a charging plug? if they just have the regular 110V, you have to ask them if they have a 15+ amp extension cord and a plug that can handle 20amps right? curious about this....
Yes, if plugging into a wall outlet via extension cord, it's best to use one rated for 15A. Most outdoor or heavy duty extension cables have this rating. The charger will never pull more than 12A when connected to a normal 120V outlet.
Any way to plan a round trip? Especially where the final stop on the 1st leg of the trip there's no place to charge and it's 50 miles back to the nearest Supercharger.
If you are stopped overnight on that first leg and you can charge using a 120V outlet that's probably your best bet if you want to avoid backtracking. Or charge up extra at that first supercharger so you can still hit the next one after you stop
If you want some automated assistance with that (round trip or multiple destination) try A Better Route Planner (abetterrouteplanner.com).
How long does it take to Tesla supercharger to completely charge the car? I’m considering buying a Tesla but don’t feel like spending an hour charging up if that’s really the case.
Good question! Charging from 0-100% would take you 40-60 mins depending on the supercharger and car, but the reality is you'll almost never do this. Fueling with an EV is not the same as a gas car where you always fill up with a full battery. On road trips you'll arrive at a SC with around 10-20%, then charge up enough to either reach your destination or arrive at the next SC with 10-20% remaining. This means most stops are 15-30 mins and keeps you moving. Charging above 80% or so is much slower, so it's better to just get back on the road than wait an extra 30 mins to get to 100%
Alex - are you based in Ohio? I’m in Akron.
@@GrahamRiverProductio yup!
Is it okay to use an extension cord with the Tesla home charger?
Yes just make sure it is rated to do so.
@@Sibs I couldn’t find one at Home Depot.
@@kevindelane2385 go to Amazon. I saw they have a lot of different types.
95% is better if you go to 100% you lose regenerative braking
Might be one of the most useless videos lol.
Thanks for the engagement 👍
Our biggest tip for Tesla touring is to use the www.evhotels.org app - it's the simple way to find all those thousands of hotels that offer EV charging. Not only Tesla HPWS destination chargers but also the many more J1772 chargers that are perfect for over night charging of our tesla. Also hotels with 14-50 charging etc. It saves us a lot of frustration. We also use it to find our favorite brands so we maximize our loyalty points for hotel brands.
