  • We have had our flock of Khaki Campbell ducks for one year now. How are they working out? Do we have hens laying an egg every day of the year?

Along with my husband Clay, our dogs, cats, bees, and some poultry, we live in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming and are working on setting into our own new little homestead. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and my wonderful partner has joined me more recently. What will you find if you follow the channel and watch the videos?
    Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. We split wood for heat, fill the water tank from a gravity fed spring, and attempt to grow as much of our own food as possible between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
    We live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that we are surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at mewe.com/join/... or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!

    Ariel, the way you take care of your animals help to make it possible for their production. I've seen you take care of what you feed plus supplements. Lots of TLC. And you know how to live off the land, admirable. Thank you for your videos.

    Ducks always seem to be in a hurry, running everywhere; they never seem to be just strolling about. like hens do.

    I'm wondering about their taste...i know that neither of you liked the flavor of the Swedish Blues so, just curious if the Khaki's are better. Trying to weigh the pros & cons of different breeds.

      Apparently they are too top heavy, and don't have the wing capacity to fly.

    I loved my Khaki's. The predators are many here, and ducks can't move as fast as the chickens to get away. We enjoyed the eggs also..

    How do you get them back in the duck house at night? I lost all of mine to the raccoons because they absolutely refused to come in at night and would roost in areas where I couldn’t get to them.

    • @kellydowns6203
      @kellydowns6203 5 місяців тому +2

      Don't know if this helps but, maybe switch to feeding them at night. That way they'll be food motivated to follow you or meet you in their coop. Also, it saves some $ on feed b/c the flock spends it's time foraging all day.

      @herbwitch5681 - You can also verbally train your ducks to go into your duck house at night. Morgan Gold of the Gold Shaw Farm channel uses "All ducks go to bed!" as his phrase. Search this phrase on that channel's video tab. I think the first is from five years ago (Man Trains Ducks to Go Home at Night) and another good one is four years old (A Nearly Foolproof Guide to DUCK HERDING). There are others that either address the training or have some bits about the training.

    Glad to see you back! I always enjoy your videos!
    Just a comment about feeding your dogs and cats raw eggs.
    I used to have a Saint Bernard. I also had a source of Turkey eggs. I mentioned to my veterinarian that I was supplementing my dog's food with turkey eggs. The veterinarian cautioned me not to give him raw eggs but to always make sure it was cooked. Something about an ingredient in the raw egg white.
    Have you heard anything about that?

    • @mircat28
      @mircat28 5 місяців тому +1

      I just went to Google and asked if dogs and cats can eat raw eggs. The best answer came from the American Kennel Club. The answer was YES!
      The best eggs are from free range chickens on an organic diet. You could have looked this up.
      Some animals might have digestive issues so check with your vet.
