    What I've learned from smoking pipes recently is don't light too hot and fast, don't smoke too fast-pay attention to how hot the pipe is in your hand, don't pack too tight-you'll have to puff a lot to keep it lit and don't wait till your having a nicotine fit to smoke your pip because you'll be impatient and fry your tongue.

    As if the tongue bite issue isn't bad enough, if you are trying to avoid a nicotine hit, it just gets more complicated.
    This was one of the most comprehensive talks on tongue bite I've seen on YT. I hadn't really been taking the alkalinity factor into account, concentrating instead on the moisture levels and sugar content. Thanks to you and your contributing viewer for this additional information.

    Hey Muttnchop, i think i'm having a bit of trouble with my pipes. I live in a small apartment, so everytime i want to smoke i have to leave and find a space where smoking's allowed. And that's fine. My problem is that when i get back and i clean my pipe up, It stinks the whole room out with a awful smell. I am wondering if i'm doing something wrong? Please let me know. Thanks

    After watching ALL of your videos, I thought I'd never had tongue bite, because heat has never been a problem since I used the breath method from day one. However, I always had what I was calling "dry mouth", sometimes for days, and even throat soreness although I never inhale. Today I realize this must be the "chemical burn" version of tongue bite from all the aromatics I've been using, combined with my long draws to keep it lit. I'm only in my second month, but I'm going to switch solely to english blends for a while and see if things improve, along with picking up some Biotene Mouthwash and Aloe Vera Juice. I won't give up easily :) Thank you!

    I'd like to point out that the use of a 9mm charcoal filter seems to prevent both types of tongue bite. I never experienced any kind of this affliction with my filter pipes. The minimal reduction in taste is a fair price to pay for the extra comfort of a cool non-biting smoke! (Personally, I don't taste this reduction, but many complain about it and prefer not to use filter pipes.)

      I agree I have mostly filter pipes and I think they taste great. Also I pay attention to having the tobacco just dry enough. That and the breathing method have cured tounge bite for me.

    Just get a pipe with a 9mm filter and you'll have to work hard to get a tongue bite. Use the Vauen 9 mill filters.

    Sugary things greatly relieve tongue bite for me. M&Ms and sweet tea are my go-to. Sugar is definitely the key, because artificial sweeteners do not have the same effect. As stated in the video, carbonated drinks exacerbate the problem, so sodas ought to be avoided.

    Thanks for your videos vis-a-vis information provided.
    I'm returning to pipe-smoking after 20 years. (Last time was in college years.)
    Question: This past weekend I heavily smoked. Like 3 times a day. Sat and sun.
    But.. I was using a torch lighter with tobacco with chocolate flavor (which i understand turns into sugar with the torch).
    Could it be the reason for an acidic aftertaste in my teeth ?? Even after days of not smoking/puffing.
    Thank you. (Greetings from Puerto Rico)

    I'm a returning pipe smoker after an about 3 year hiatus. I recently started back and smoked some straight Perique the other day , then realized why I'd quit-tongue bite. I carefully re-watched your video on breathing type of pipe smoking. That was just today, and I went for a walk lit the pipe with PS Navy deluxe flake using what you showed, then forced myself to use this method of smoking. I kept thinking the pipe is going to go out, but almost magically it didn't. Every time I thought this I'd breath in a couple of times and give a little puff out through the bowl. The thing stayed lit and almost burned to complete ash with a few shreds of tobacco left. The best result of all was this "strange" to me pleasant, savory almost plum type taste left in my mouth. This eventually faded, and to my amazement, I didn't have any ashtray type taste left. You've helped me see a new attainable level of pipe smoking enjoyment, and I'm newly excited to explore untried and old blends to see what real taste I can experience that otherwise would have been hidden. I understand now. Thank you!

    I've stopped using a lighter and started exclusively using matches.
    It seems to help immensely. The flame on the match never gets too hot. It also seems to not burn too far down the bowl, thus providing a more flavorful experience. The time it takes one match to burn seems to be the exactly perfect way to char light.

    Plus of course calmer sipping, shorter draws, and packing the pipe looser so that I don't have to draw so hard in the first place.

    I always recommend Zinc cough lozenges to cure tongue bite. Particularly for the new smoker. I've also found that a tobacco I like but tends to be a hot smoker. I'll let it dry out and re-moisturize with a couple drops of water and let it set overnight. Great video!!!

      There may be something in that. I'm a new piper and ordered some tobacco samples online from a company here in the UK. When they arrived I was surprised to find they'd put a handful of paper wrapped hard sweets (candy) in the package. I thought it odd but forgot about them until yesterday when I fancied something sweet so I unwrapped one and popped it in my mouth expecting it to be some kind of fruit flavour and was very surprised to find it was a cough sweet! I was wondering why on earth they put them in and your comment may have thrown some light on it. Thanks!

    Famous bite...some Virgianias might give that..specially red ones. I once had terribly bite from a Virginia blend ( I don't remember name of the blend)..some say McB's blends will give them a bite..I haven't had problem McB's. Clean pipe might help and slow smoke is key to tasteful and no bite smoke. Got tin of Bijou...haven't open the tin yet...I think it is a oriental blend with some honey casing...what is your opinion about it?..Should I open the tin..honey casing is not automatically my cup of tea.

    9? - Don't drink alcohol with smoking. The alcohol removes the natural protective mucus layer in your mouth as well as damages cells.
    A lot of this is also very related to cancer. Tongue bite, either one, means damaged, exposed cells = BAD. Alcohol multiplies this.

    Thanks to your smoking tips videos I rarely get the bite due to improper smoking techniques. Now I'm focusing on blends and so far the only blends that are problematic for me are blends that are cased in fruit or honey. For whatever reason, those casings wreck havoc on my mouth. As a beginner i get regularly tongue bite, though mostly on starting or reliting the pipe.
    When I started I was also paranoid (still am a bit) of my pipe going out, sometimes i take too deep pufs or too fast.
    Yesterday i tried something different, just little short puffs and nothing too fast. It was a pleasant experience and no tongue bite at all. And above that the pipe didn't go out and it stayed lit all the way to the bottom.

    Muttonchop Piper how do I know the difference between tongue bite and spice? I ventured into flakes, Virginia's and Perique.
    I smoked Missouri Meerschaum Southern Gentleman and it can be difficult to tell if my tobacco is hot or is spicy? I have been learning to use the breathing method. I do notice my lips get spicy the same way with Ram Rod cigars and Camacho cigars.

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  5 років тому

      Leon Boudreau - spice hot is like eating a hot pepper, or regular pepper, it’s more of a numbing hot, where tongue bite is more of a stinging hot, your tongue will sting. 👍👍👍

    Talking about chemicals... I used to work at Lane Limited in Atlanta, we packed pipe tobacco, Borkum Riff Captain Black amongst others. There was a general feeling of "ol' school" in the factory, we respected the tobacco and the procedures. However, there was an old machine, a Focke, (German) that used Prestone radiator fluid to clean the piston that pushed the tobacco into the pouch. First time I saw that, (bein a pipe smoker) I was alarmed but my boss asured me that was legal and approved by the goverment. So, I wonder what other fluids the other manufacturers are putting into our pouches...

      @MuttnchopPiper  6 років тому +2

      Jorge Picabea - I have only been to the Cornell & Diehl factory in South Carolina, and it was a very clean facility, the machines they used had no chemicals that I saw spilling into the tobacco, but I can’t speak for other factories in other places of the world. 👍👍👍

    I’ve bought all the gear and all the components…. I was going to try my first bowl shortly… but now I’m a little worried I don’t want this issue. Is it just part of this world? I bought a Peterson pipe for my first pipe, but the “best” tobacco I could find at the moment is - from what I understand - garbage. I have Captain Black Cherry and a brand called Largo (Gold). Beta I could do for now… yeah I know, sad. But in case you guys haven’t noticed, pipe shops are few and far between nowadays! Haha. Any advice is welcome and appreciated

      I just started smoking a pipe yesterday. I had never smoked before, so I can relate to your nervous concern. My first smoke (yesterday) was in a MM cob pipe with Captain Black original. I thought it was quite pleasant. I did get too pre-occupied with keeping it lit and consequently sipped too strong one time while lighting. I didn’t get tongue bite, but it certainly felt unpleasant. However today’s smoke was not as pleasant. I used a brick and mortar blend that was recommended for beginners, but honestly I tasted more like an ash tray. Then I discovered that my cob pipe has a filter and maybe it was still wet from the previous day, which would have that effect. I just discovered today that I should replace paper filters after each smoke, so I think that’s what tainted my 2nd smoke. I also learned that using charcoal filters can get you more smokes per filter and help prevent tongue bite. I actually think my paper filter helped prevent me from getting tongue bite on my first smoke when I drew too hard.

    This makes me want to use a PH test kit on some tobaccos. If I were to use distilled water (perfect 7.0 PH, no particles at all) and soak a small piece of of tobacco in a 5ml test tube I could use the PH test kit I have for my fish tank to see if the alkalinity increased or decreased.

    Very helpful and comprehensive review of this eternal problem. The burn and air flow dynamics are complex and multivariate. In addition to the key methods you well describe for preventing tongue bite, I find a larger bowl is better for me as I can light a smaller part of the surface and let that spot grow slowly and distill all the flavours and oils from the warmed surrounding unlit tobacco very gradually. I also find it easier to pack the bowl lighter and less densely, which helps easy air flow control and makes gentle sipping much easier. A large inside diameter and shallower bowl can release more heat easily. Like other commentators here, I am finding that a rustic or sandblast finish pipe, having more surface area, can help to release more heat from the bowl and keep the smoke a bit cooler. While physics (the ratio of surface to volume of a sphere is larger as the radius decreases) dictates that small volume pipes should radiate more heat away, I find its easy to overpack small pipes more densely and this leads to a higher burn rate and less control of air flow which overweighs the influence of heat loss through the bowl surface.

    I hate to bash certain brands, but there is one in particular which I cannot smoke, no matter what techniques I use. After many unfinished tins of their products, I no longer buy any of their blends. The funny thing to me, is that so many other pipers love their blends, so I figure it's something in my chemical makeup, which turns me off to their products. In the end, it's like Coke or Pepsi. For me, it's Rootbeer!

    I am a rookie piper, but I notice somethings: 1. The more pipes you smoke the less you'll get tongue bites, guess your mouth get used to it. 2. Wet tobaccos are really a problem, fix this by putting a chunk of tobacco (enough for a bowl) over a paper towel and put it 20 seconds in the microwave, if it is almost "cracking" after the MW, it's ready, if not put another 10 sec there. This procedure really improved my smoking, way less relighting and gurgling. 3. About gurgling, a straight pipe completely solved my problem, I guess is due the fact that the moisture doesn't accumulate in the bottom of the bowl and keeps flowing out the stem little by little. 4. Mutnchop techiques really helped me, I use part breathe method and part sipping some air in every draw. Cold water goes really good with piping. That is what I found out, hope it'll help you too!! Regards from Brazil!! Where are you today Muttnchop??? Like your vids!

    As a new pipe smoker, I find myself wanting to take very long draws from my pipe. But I think the key is sipping the smoke like you've mentioned before.
    Last night I was experimenting with drawing the smoke in by using my jaw to make the empty space in my mouth bigger and smaller, while keeping my lips sealed around the stem and using my cheek muscles to push the air out as I closed it. It made the smoke come in a lot slower and almost massaged it like in the breathe method. I may have to try this a little more and see how it goes.

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  6 років тому +2

      Aaron D. - That’s exactly what you do when using the breathe method, Sipping is the key, if the smoke feels hot, or the bowl is hot to the touch, you use your muscle action to just force air through the pipe until it cools, then start sipping in again once it cools, using this method gives you so much more control over the pipe. 👍👍👍

I'm fairly new to the hobby, but found smoking a dry system pipe helps (currently using a Savinelli dry system), trying to smoke slow as you said (difficult as I like to chase the flavour) and the most helpful is drinking something, but definitely non carbonated and non alcoholic. for me everyone said start out smoking aromatic tobacco. So I did, if that was all there was out there I would have quit. The tongue bite was just horrible however since I started smoking English or non- aromatic tobacco I have not had tongue bite. The type of tobacco, rhythm of smoking, sugar content, the dryness maybe all factors but for me a simple fix was needed smoke English tobacco. this is just opinion but it worked and I enjoy pipe smoking everyday with out tongue bite.

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  8 років тому

      Cortney, I totally agree, my only concern with suggesting English blends is for some new pipe smokers the taste might be to intense, it's a double edged sword, aromatics are sweet, and are flavored with vanilla, or maple etc. but they are more apt to produce tongue bite, conversely English blends might be to harsh in the taste department, but less or no tongue bite, either way you go it's a challenge. 👍👍👍😃

    Hello Mutton Chop. My question, why then do cigars and cigarettes often with toppings, never tongue bite? There is something else, the pipes themselves are solely causal? Burley or Virgina causes no bite in other methods of tobacco smoking.

      @MuttnchopPiper  7 років тому

      Robert Dixon - good question, that unfortunately I can't answer, I have never smoked cigarettes, and I think I have smoked 2 Cigars in my life, but maybe some one in the club can answer that, because I would like to know myself. 👍👍👍

    • @jonathansimpsontw
      @jonathansimpsontw 7 років тому

      I would also like to know, but I think I can understand why cigarettes don’t. When smoking cigarettes it gets inhaled over the tongue, with smoking a pipe, it usually sits in your mouth with the smoke concentrated on a small part of the tongue. Also, cigarette companies add toppings etc to make them feel smoother to smoke so they aren’t as harsh when inhaling. Just recently been getting a lot of tongue bite, I thought I stopped getting it ages ago! Oh and cigarettes aren’t real tobacco

    I have a pretty serious question for you actually... have you ever burned the back of your throat from tobacco that got too hot?
    I haven't had any issues up until now but last night I went out to smoke a nice pipe full of a mild aromatic and seemingly did something to the back of my throat? It definitely looks irritated... I guess my question is is it possible to burn your throat from pipe tobacco keep in mind that I use filters?

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  7 років тому

      John Silvers - I have heard a few other people complaining of this problem, I don't think it would be because the tobacco is to hot, because if the smoke was so hot to burn you threat your pipe would burn up in your hand. It might be because of the PH level in your mouth. If it's different then the PH level of the tobacco, it could cause a reaction. I would do a good cleaning on your pipe, then try a different aromatic for a while to see if you get the same result, if not, smoke the mild aromatic that caused the problem, if it returns it could be the tobacco has been tainted in some form and you might want to dispose of it and get a fresh batch. 👍👍👍

      Muttnchop Piper I was trying a brand new aromatic and I was using it to break in a new pipe that I just got for my birthday yesterday. It's a good pipe so I know there's no chemicals or anything like that but from other people I've talked to you might be right about it being the blend that I was smoking. I had never smoked that particular blend before and I did find it although it was supposed to be mild to be a little harsh. Interesting I think I will just shy away from that particular blend and stick to the blends that I know that I have no issue with. Thank you for the advice much appreciated.

    Sir, I disagree. Sugars are weak acids (containing aldehyde group), so you cannot blame them. But when it burns it produce water and co2 (lot of water, carbohydrates). Tobacco contains many alkaloids (eg. nicotine), which are basic. There is no real research on that.
    So my theory is this: when you smoke a blend with high sugar conten (it produces lot of water vapour) and when it reacts with those alkaloids in tobacco (to produce alkaline substanses), you get tongue bite. You can observe this when you smoke too wet samuel gawith blends 😀

      It does for the heat portion of tongue bite, because the smoke has further to travel before it reaches your mouth, it cools before it gets there. But it does not help for PH or chemical tongue bite, I find with chemical tongue bite it depends on the tobacco, for me oriental forward English blends agree with my pallet, they smoke cool and flavorful, each person is different, so try different blends to find the one that agrees with you. 👍👍👍😃

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  6 років тому

      Kuratos Darque - no, not that I have found, a filter is primarily used to soak up moisture, and filter out any impurities if there are any, tongue bite is a heat, and steam problem, if your tobacco is moist, and it gets to hot, it turns that moisture into steam, which you draw to your mouth stinging your tongue. A slow even rhythm like using the breathe method is the only way I have found to limit tongue bite. 👍👍👍

     OK... once again from an elderly pipe smoking gentleman (who has, sadly, always tended to be a "wet-smoker"), I'm gonna "let the cat outta the bag" here on a LITTLE TRICK that I've used to solve the tongue bite problem for me... and, it just might work for you, so I'll give away this little "trick" to all my "pipe-smoking brethren" free of charge!... To be PERFECTLY HONEST, the COOLEST, DRIEST smoke that this ole dude ever experiences is in using BOTH a 9mm charcoal filter and a 6mm Savinelli balsa filter SIMULTANEOUSLY in a 9mm churchwarden stem (that is: use BOTH at the same time!)!... The balsa filter absorbs all the moisture, which not only eliminates tongue bite, but, also greatly extends the life of the charcoal filter to at least 2 bowls!... And the balsa filter can be rotated (between 3 or 4 fresh balsa filters), so each can completely air-dry... and, after a few uses, can also be rinsed in vodka, dried, and used over and over again as well!... So, here's the deal: I buy the replacement 9mm bent churchwarden stems (Chinese made) on Amazon... which, BTW, fit only SOME of my Danish, German, and Italian 9mm filtered pipes (ones that have a 0.40" O.D. tenon). Of course, after smoking a bowl, you need to push out the 6mm balsa filter with a LONG pipe cleaner (but that also serves to clean the churchwarden stem with each bowl anyway). Some folks might say, "But, doesn't 2 filters detract from the taste of the tobacco?"... Well , to that, all I can say is: "I can certainly still tell (and enjoy) the differences between all the various blends - Peterson EMP, Plum Pudding, Magnum Opus, Mississippi River, Nightcap, Artisan's Blend, Quiet Nights, etc., etc.... and this trick has GREATLY increased my enjoyment of "pipe smoking, and THAT"S what it's all about - right???? Pipe smoking is about your own "personal enjoyment", NOT copy-catting what someone else TELLS you to do!... Ya gotta do what works for you, so also take what this ole boy says with a grain of salt too - BUT... ya might wanna give the "DOUBLE-FILTER IN A CHURCHWARDEN STEM" a try - because ya just MIGHT like it a lot!... Blessings and happy puffing to you!👍

    Ok. I'm new to piping. However, I been making my own vape juice for about 5 years. PG is used in the nicotine and flavors to get what we call throat hit. That's the main way to get a good nicotine hit. So , higher nic level means more PG and more burn. Thank you
