Inadvertent cellaring...Cleaning my workbench I found an old margarine tub with an aromatic blend I hand mixed...in 1987. It was a little dry so I re-hydrated it and it smoked very nicely. Good flavor to be sure, but I don't know that I would say it was any better than before it fell behind the toolbox. At least I can say I've smoked 31 year old tobacco. (For any Virginians out there, it was mixed at the "Ye Olde Tobacconist Shoppe" that used to be in Busch Gardens, Williamsburg). Keep up the great videos, brother.

When tobacco dries (out of case), all processes stop. It must retain moisture to "age". What you had was "old" tobacco.

You're right on the spot here. When years ago I first learned from American YT pipe presenters about cellaring (which doesn't seem to be a common practice over here in Europe), I was sceptical, to say the least. But as soon as I'd tried it, my doubts vanished. Cellaring really does make a difference, especially to English blends. Now I always let a few tins of my favourite tobaccos sit for 2-3 years before popping them.

I recently found a tin of Old Dark Fired at a tobacconist in Baton Rouge, LA. It had almost 4 years of age on it. When I got back to Texas and opened it, the scent of fermentation was overpowering. There was so much plume on this tobacco, (loupe verified, not mold!). Amazing.

Sounds like you got lucky on getting aged tins. I made a little trip to a nearby cigar/pipe shop yesterday and they had a large stock of mcclelland tins and I picked up 8 of my favorite tins and a couple cigars to try. A couple were dingy from the cigar smoke- a good sign. They had price stickers over the dates so I couldn't tell the age in the store, after getting home and doing some peeling I was delighted, a few of the oldest ones were St. James Woods from 2011 and Bombay Court from 09' . They had a bunch more left that had gotten dingy. I will be going back soon, they even gave me a 10% discount for showing my pipe club card.

    Dear Chris,
thank you for sharing this interesting experience!
I myself came recently about a tin of Wellauer's Best (a tobacco that I haven't smoked so far) at my little newspaper and tobacco shop round the corner. It still has a price and tax label in Deutsche Mark, therefore it is at least from 2001, before the Euro was introduced. I wonder how it has developed, and I will buy me a new tin to compare it, just for curiousity. Let's see!
    Best regards from Munich, Peter

I am a big fan of cellaring, but sadly some of my favorites are flake tobacco's that come in square tins. The square tins tend to be very finicky about maintaining their seal. I would recommend going ahead and popping the seal on these, and dropping them into an appropriate sized mason jar to advance the aging process. I've had too many square tins compromised in the past, to take any chances. Another great video Chris!

Hey Muttnchop, I just bought a tin of NightCap and EMP and it came in roughly three days ago. Going by your research my tins were produced in 2012, already over four years age on mine as well. I noticed the same thing you did, the stains on the paper under the tobacco, and of course a great aroma and it smoked very deliciously. Apparently I need to place an order again. That's a great jump start on cellaring!

Hi, Chris, I’d just like to say thanks for all your videos and advice. You have taken my pipe smoking to a new level. I love smoking my pipe using the breathe method (took me a while to get there...) to a level where it is just going out: the taste is so enhanced that it is unbelievable. In the UK we can’t get the variety of tobacco you can get, but pipe smoking isn’t about variety, it’s about what it gives you as an experience. Relax. Enjoy.

With the deeming regulations going into more effect in the future I am trying to aquire & cellar more and more tobacco that I know is a favorite of mine and may be "on the chopping block." Therefore if the company decides it's not worth the cost of the FDA testing and fees and decides not to produce the tobacco any more, I'll have some to smoke if it doesn't make it back to the shelves.

By accident, I went to a pipe store in my area and picked up a tin of london mixture. I noticed the price tag was yellowed a bit, but being a lounge I didnt think too much about it. Then I checked the code on the back, It turned out it was packed in 2011. Sweet.

An even more important reason to cellar is that your favorite blends, go out of production. Or your favorite companies go out of business altogether! (I'm talking Dunhill and McClelland at this point of course).

Nice clip Chris, been cellaring bulks for years. Mason jars are excelent for that purpose. EMP is good blend just too mild to my taste. The re-release of Standard Mixture Full version is sublime blend. Recomended. Yeah it think that they lightly stove tobacco to create that mellowish taste-talking about EMP.
Have a great week and as always cool smokes, mate.

Hi friend!!! Excelent video. I want you to know that recently (about two weeks ago), we opened a 1980 Dunhill Standard Mixture tin (with my fellas of Buenos Aires Pipe Club), and it was incredible. it was like an English Blend but much more sweet. (i didn't try a recent made blend tin to compare but i don't think a fresh one could overcome that one). So, best regards and to your next video!!!!

Dear Muttonchop do you think as well as age the exposure to air makes a difference as the tobacco tins you received must initially been vacuum sealed or do you think they just settle and mature with age as we all do?
PS I'm on my first tin of early morning pipe and loving it. For me it's a all day smoke. Please let me know your thoughts.

I'm looking at that wrapper and I'm wondering: Is that a coffee filter? Is there anything special about what the wrapper is made of and is it important? I'm wondering if I should use something inside my tobacco jar when cellaring it to absorb undesirable components that may build up while aging.
Thanks for the great videos. I love to sit here and have a pipe (or cigar) while watching them. It's like sitting on the front porch with a buddy and having a smoke with him.

So I live in the hellish environment of Arizona. My problem is when I cellar my tobacco it tends to be bone dry in 2-3 years. I store all my tobacco inside my house in a dark box but still have this issue. My house is usually 78-79 degrees. I thought about adding some moisture to the tobacco before I cellar them, perhaps that will fix the issue? I know many pipe smokers say to NEVER add moisture to the tobacco before cellaring, but most of those people who give such advice live in colder and more humid climates. Do you think I should add a few Boveda packets with my tobacco then transfer the slightly more moist tobacco to a jar for cellaring?

It might be that, since Dunhill exited the market, a lot of old hoarded stocks are entering the market as no fresh product is being made anymore. In Europe we started running out of Dunhill blends, I had to hunt for early morning to get a 50g tin. It may be my last one 😢 I took a lesson out of your video and started stocking up my cellar too. I will have to ration me and my pipe and savour it as long as I can before they make pipe smoking a capital felony (I am sure hard drugs will be legal though, so many damn politicians are addicts).

I learn a lot from you Muttonchop. Great video on cellering. I admire your selections of tinned tobacco, I'd bet you have quite a lot bulk tobacco. One question with all that tobacco do you control temp and humidity in your tobacco room to keep tobacco at the proper temp and humidity for long term storage?
Thanks Muttonchops, your my go to guy for tobacco information.

No, I keep my tin tobacco in the tin which are vacuumed sealed. My bulk tobacco I put in large canning jars that after a couple of day self seal. After a year of having that bulk tobacco in a canning jar I opened it the air pressure sounded like a Mac truck setting its breaks, and the tobacco was as moist as the day I put it in the jar
