As with anything, moderation is key. There's a huge difference between pipe smokers and cigarette smokers. Pipers occasionally smoke as a relaxing diversion. Cigarette smokers smoke constantly, and because they're addicted, and they're inhaling the smoke. Big difference.

My step-grandfather (loved him dearly) was an avid pipe smoker; he would have his breakfast, tend to his pipes, light one and read the newspaper for an hour. After that he would take a walk, a casual stroll really but you would be amazed by his posture, he stood at a tall 185cm with a back straight as an arrow and carried himself like a gentleman. Even at the age of 82 the man was as healthy as anyone could hope to be, sharp as a razor too. He seemed like he would outlive myself actually, so his untimely death was a surprise. Turns out few weeks after an electroshock theraphy his heart just stopped. No sickness, no complications, just stopped just because of a "treatement" gone wrong.
You can live your life being careful about every little thing, living straight and narrow. But that doesn't mean you won't get cancer, or die in a traffic accident nonetheless. A person should be aware that no amount of being careful will make them immortal, and sometimes taking some risks for the sake of a brighter day will be more fulfilling than trying to squeeze out every last second from a future that isn't even guaranteed. There is a balance between freedom and safety, and everybody has their own flavor of it, but everyone should remember, safety isn't assured but freedom is. Honestly abstaining from the things I like just to die by some a-hole on his phone running me over would make me pretty mad... if I wasn't dead.

When my Husband had surgery the anesthesiologist asked him if he smoked, he said yes. then he was asked, "how many packs"? He told the doctor that he smoked a pipe. The doctor told him that that was much better than cigarettes. My husband has smoked for many years he is 70 and has smoked since he was about 17. When he gets his yearly check-up the oxygen level of his blood has been at 99% for many years. Cigarettes have a huge amount of chemicals to give them the "flavor", pipe tobacco and cigars usually do not have the chemicals added.

The big points about tobacco in my opnion:
    1. Moderation is the key for everything, not only tobacco.
    2. Tobacco was (and is) the target of large scale social experiments. If you say "tobacco", 200 persons will gather around you with stories about deceased relatives or something government said - even if you smoke very rarely, like me. Look the point: tobacco isn't an angel, but isn't that devil.
    3. I always try to avoid doubtful and low quality tobaccos, and i NEVER carry smoke to my lungs.

Great video. As a long time pipe smoker I have stayed away from highly processed and commercialized pipe tobacco. The cigarette companies manipulate their tobacco plants thru hybridization to boost nicotine levels to ensure they have a nicotine addicted customer, in addition, they re-process their stale cigarettes and re-blend the stale tobacco with fresh tobacco to be re-shipped to the retailers. The tobacco being smoked by cigarette smokers is putrid. Finally, I have known old timers who where pipe smokers like my grandfather who lived well into their 90's with no health problems.

12 years ago I quit smoking cigarettes. I recently took up pipe smoking. These are two vastly different worlds. Cigarettes are the coffin nails of modern tobacco use.
Pipe tobaccos are the best of tobaccos. For taste, aroma and chill smoking a pipe is the best. Not anywhere near so addicting. I can skip smoking for days or weeks and then fire up a bowl of Captain Black.
Pipe smoking is an art form.

From observing how cigar tobacco is prepared and cured and noting that the cigar is wrapped with tobacco leaves - contrasting with cigarette tobacco which is mushed up in a slurry and processed all to hell with thousands of addictive and harmful additives added to increase the addictive properties, it makes me wonder. Pipe tobacco has be wondering as well- what are "aromatic" tobaccos - what is added?? Once the plant is processed to these levels, how can either pipe or cigarette tobacco even try to compare to the rawest use of tobacco - watch how cigar tobacco is fermented and air cured, then hand wrapped with whole leaves to form the finished product. Interesting isn't it?

I've noticed this. I've never smoked cigarettes before so I can't speak on those, but I know that with a pipe or even cigars, I'll often go a week or more between smokes and feel just fine. I never really feel a strong compulsion to smoke my pipe, but it'll be more like I'm sitting on a rock in the woods and think to myself "a bowl might be sort of nice right now". I never find myself packing another one right after, and I usually go a minimum of a few days between smokes - not because I'm making some big effort to, but because I genuinely just forget it's an option sometimes. I like that it's not always there in the back of my mind.

I recently took up pipe smoking as a hobby, but I took the advice of people like MuttonchopPiper here and gave it some thought before I did so. The father of a friend of mine was a heavy pipe smoker that died of some kind of cancer, though he always inhaled. Another friend of mine lost his pipe-smoking grandfather to cancer that returned despite an operation to cut part of his lip away. This kind of stuff weighed on my mind at the start.
Most of my family have died from smoking related illnesses, but they usually had other health problems including those related to lifestyle. Stress, mental health problems, poor diet, medications, serious poverty and so on. I know that lung cancer doesn't run in the family, though most of my relatives suffered and died from lung conditions - emphysema, pneumonia, pleurisy, collapsed lungs, tuberculosis. Most men in my family smoked pipes (including some women) but we have no history of oral cancer; the main killer is actually stomach cancer partly due to chronic ulcers (stress), followed by heart attacks and strokes (diet, medication, lifestyle).
Looking at the situation as a whole, I reckoned it would be foolish of me to start smoking and inhaling due to the history of lung problems that even affect my non-smoking relatives now. I don't think I should be at high risk of oral cancer however because we have no history of that, even among the pipe smokers in my family. I decided to take up the hobby while keeping inhalation to a minimum, unlike my relatives who always inhaled their pipes going back to the 1930s. I've been smoking for 6-8 months now, a few bowls per week, and I see it as no worse for me than caffeine, junk food or alcohol. I would recommend this approach to anybody else thinking of starting the hobby; never mind other people's stories, look at your own family history and decide for yourself.

Nice video. I have a chronic leukemia (CLL), since 2008, which is being treated very successfully. I still plan to take up the pipe again; I think there's a lot of health hype going around. When I was an Air Force navigator in the '80s I'd sit in the alert facility (as part of Strategic Air Command we lived on base for 1 out of 3 weeks, "alert" status, ready to go to war on a moment's notice) & enjoy my pipe while reading. It had a pipe cleaner that stayed inside the stem to absorb moisture; worked pretty well, but eventually got tired of getting the moisture in my mouth (must've gotten pretty wet tobacco) & gave it up. Don't recall hearing about filters in those days (or just didn't pay attention). My wife has been complaining about my occasional cigars, so I'm taking up the pipe again, & renew the battle with moisture. Sounds like a 9mm filter will take care of the previous problem nicely. I used a Zippo pipe lighter--think I still have it somewhere--but don't recall ever having the lighter fluid taste in my tobacco. Thanks for your helpful videos!

Your points remind me of my opinions about riding a motorcycle: risk mitigation.
There is no doubt that riding a motorcycle (like smoking tobacco) increases your risk of certain injuries/diseases. However, there are things that you can do (wear protective gear, wear light colors, never drink and ride, etc) to greatly lessen your risk below cited figures for the "average" person.
Smart approaches like you've given here are great to help lower risk while still enjoying a great hobby 👍

don't forget to floss! Smoking increases you risk of periodontal disease by decreasing neutrophil and fibroblast chemotaxis. You should floss before you brush and scrub your teeth with the floss - brush your gums at a 45degree angle for 2.5 minutes two times per day. Get regular oral examinations, including head and neck cancer screenings by your dentist and 6 month cleanings (3 months if you are diagnosed with periodontal disease). Try to keep pipe smoking to a minimum and enjoy only on special occasions. Smoke outside in the breeze to avoid second hand smoke. Pipe smoking will increase your risk of oral cancer(squameous cell carcinoma) with a survival rate of about 50%. Pipe tobacco smoke can also increase your risk of other salivary tumors which have a much worse prognosis. Alcohol will increase your risk of oral and esophageal cancer by about two fold (tobacco alone). You can get lung cancer with any form of tobacco smoke. There are more than 4000 carcinogens in tobacco smoke of any kind. The more you are exposed to smoke the greater your probalility of acquiring different forms of malignancy. Like you I enjoy a pipe, but understand, we are all taking a major risk. I do limit my exposure to only special occasions. I hope this helps you in your discovery process.

As a person who is considering taking up pipe smoking, alcohol tasting, and snus, as well as vaping; I do a lot of research beforehand and try to see the risks and the positives (if there are any). I used to be very anti tobacco, anti cannabis, anti alcohol, etc. But i have learned a lot from both sides, hearing what they have to say. All in all you just have to know what try is fine with you. If you feel something is harming you, you may have to take a step back and take a break or lay off. But that is life. Anything can happen the most practical and unpractical can cross our paths. You can sit back and try to avoid anything that could come with a negative risk and still get some sort of health issue...... but then again would you have really experienced life. On the left, list the top five pros of pipe smoking. On the right, list the top five cons, or detriments, of pipe smoking. When you complete the lists, compare the two and the right decision for you will be staring you in the face. Honesty is a prerequisite in this methodology.

I like the idea of “contemplative” pipe smoking in the privacy of my shop. That’s how I’ve always viewed it. I’m actually a worship leader at our church and not looking to advertise my hobby but you’ve added value and have affirmed to what I otherwise see as harmless, masculine, small life pleasure. Told my family that they may walk in on me here and there but they say as long as it doesn’t smell like cigarettes, they’re fine with it. I’ve been doing about a bowl a day over the past week in the shop and there truly is something relaxing while watching creation through the smoke of a pipe. It’s a cup of hot chocolate for men. Thanks for the vids, you’ve helped me affirm the way I’ve thought of it for some time now👍🏻

Aaron Hoffman - You bet Aaron, I truly believe in my heart that not only does God expect us to spread his word, he also wants us to enjoy the life he has breathed in to us, if not, why would he of created so much beauty for us to enjoy? Pipe smoking and the contemplative, relaxing state it puts you in let’s us slow life down a bit and enjoy what God has created for us. 👍👍👍

Thank you very much for your priceless observations, really appreciate them from an experienced smoker.
You raise very valid points as well.
I've just started with pipe smoking, and the one big difference I've observed is the burnt aftertaste, its almost a charred smell and taste for hours together, and this is regardless of the type of tobacco I use. I make sure, I smoke outdoors, I do not inhale, I do not over draw and overheat the pipe with rapid draws, clean the pipe, brush my teeth and clean my tongue. At the moment, I'm going through a huge conflict, of quitting cigarettes altogether and limiting myself to one pipe smoke a day, typically late evenings after dinner, in open air. But even that is really a borderline experience for me, since the near-term aftereffects are significantly obvious as compared to cigarettes. That aftertaste, and the amount of burnt stuff (that black fine dust, and the burnt smell) is very disturbing. I will continue this observations for next few months and if it gets just too much, will stop altogether. Please do continue to make such thought provoking posts.

Cool smoking is definitely a very important factor. I smoked a bowl that was consistently too hot a week ago and my throat is still inflamed which is not good and tended to make my mind go off the edge with worry. I think I will give it a break for a decent period and might look to return in the future

To a pipe smoker i would recommend having coffee along with your pipe as coffee reduces risk for oral and throat cancers and those who drink 4 cups a day reduce their chance of those cancers by 49%!! An alcoholic beverage increases the chance for oral cancers so alcohol should be taken in moderation.

When I was younger I asked the owner of The Hill Country Humidor in San Marcos, TX which was worse for your health, cigs, pipes, or cigars. His answer was honestly pretty shocking for someone in the industry. Basically it boiled down to them all being worse for your health than not doing it. That being said he advised moderation if I wanted to get into it and to thoroughly enjoy it rather than it being an addiction/obligation.

Thank you for your video, and for taking the time to research this topic. It is certainly a political topic, and I strive to be considerate to others when lighting a pipe. I have been fortunate in that I've had mainly, if not all, positive reactions to my pipe smoking.
An anecdote of my own pipe smoking experience is that while smoking outside one evening my aunt, some 100 or more feet away, was complaining that someone (me) had used a match and the smoke from the spent match was bothering her breathing. As I puffed the pipe to glowing I started walking further away and my aunt hollered at me to come sit next to her because the smell of my tobacco smoke was so pleasant. Here is a woman that suffers various ailments, especially asthma, and who can not be at elevations of a mile high because there is not enough oxygen for her at those levels, asking a pipe smoker to sit with her so that she could enjoy the experience.

Jonathan Clark - that's an awesome story my friend, if pipe smokers smoke aromatic blends, most people don't mind, matter of fact, I think most people enjoy smelling a wonderful blend of pipe smoke, but bring out the English blends especially the heavy Latakia, and you can clear a room. 🎃🎃🎃

    • @themancalledhondo
      @themancalledhondo 8 років тому

Muttnchop Piper I can not recall what specific blend I had in my pipe, though I know it was a Nat Sherman, probably a lighter Virginia. That said, the heartier English blends are what I now prefer, and I find that even receive compliments on those. In fact, my wife once asked if I would lend her a pipe to try smoking and when I went to fetch her a nice Virginia she asked that I share some of what I was smoking (Nat Shermans Empire English). My wife, who like myself detests cigarette smoke, took to the pipe and that great English blend right off. She is not a regular smoker (honestly, I hardly get to smoke but once a week), but my wife really enjoys those English blends. And, from what I've learned from my friends who also share a love of pipe smoking, I'm quite lucky indeed in that their spouses are not so found of smoke of any kind.
Additionally, while I have been enjoying pipes for a few years now, I still consider myself something of a novice and I am very glad that youtube recommended your pipe smoking health video as it alerted me to your channel. I have since gone back to the beginning of your uploads and am thoroughly enjoying your videos. I find your videos to be well crafted, and informative. Jonathan Clark - first let me say, I to am more partial to English blends, except for a couple of aromatics, I prefer Oriental forward English blends, my favorite right now is Seattle Pipe Clubs Plumb Pudding. Next it is awesome that your wife smokes a pipe, even if it's just accessionaly, I am able to smoke in the house because I smoke at one end, and my wife watches tv at the other end so she does not smell it very often. And finally, thank you so much for watching my videos, I hope you have found some useful information in them. 👍👍👍

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Lord of the Rings was indeed a part of my interest in pipe smoking and it also forged a great friendship. My own inspiration for smoking was formed largely by the fact that my grandfather had a meerschaum pipe (a gift from his brother, that he never smoked) on display in his bedroom. The meerschaum got me to wanting a pipe of my own, if only for the look of the thing. Then after reading and watching the Lord of the Rings I thought that the experience really sounded like something I should try. And so, together with my grandfather, I purchased a few cheap corn cobs, a bit of tobacco, and my pipe smoking journey had begun.
As for the friendships, several have been formed as a result of both the smoking and the Fellowship of the Ring (they do seem to go hand in hand). One such was after I had turned a churchwarden on a friends lathe and was talking about my new pipe outside a geology club meeting at my college. Another student chimed in, asking about my pipe, explaining that he was a pipe smoker (he and his father started smoking pipes after watching and reading the Lord of the Rings). The beginning of a friendship was formed that afternoon, and with your videos and our conversation this afternoon I am reminded of how pleasant it can be meeting fellow pipe smokers.

I looked into this topic too. The "secondary smoke" you talked about, is a concern. But you need to put it in a context that we can understand. And that is, research has found that driving on the highway, with your windows down, in traffic, is MORE dangerous than "second hand" pipe smoke. I always found that to be interesting trivia.

I agree, if you think about it there are tons of things we choose to do that are a danger to our health, eating greasy fast food, riding a motorcycle, skiing, sky diving, rock climbing, why people feel that smoking a pipe trumps all other dangerous activities is beyond me. The crucial thing is the tobacco itself. The Burley that comes out of the fields of Kentucky and what goes into a cigarette are FAR different. The crap and chemicals added will blow your mind!! It scared me more than smoking cigarettes themselves did. I make this point to show before cigarettes because popular in the early 1900s there wasn’t much health issue with tobacco. Tobacco in its natural form has far less nicotine than a cigarette and no added BS. It’s the cigarette and the process companies invented to make tobacco such a “ evil”. Before cigarettes people puffed on pipes or a cigar for pleasure, little if any inhaling, or it was chewed. Both my great grandpas lived to be 90 and were pipe smokers. Mt grandpa and several uncles smoked cigarettes and inhaled every puff...all died in 60s of massive heart attacks. Moral of the story....Tobacco has been around for a long time but the way we use it drastically changed and the crap put into it changed. At least with pipe smoking your puffing natural tobacco that’s not molested with a chemical bath of chemicals and extra nicotine to make sure you get hooked. I quit cigarettes and went to pipe only now for about a week and I can already feel lung function returning and I feel better. Much smaller doses of nicotine through real tobacco and no inhaling.

Muttnchop Piper No sir...thank you! I’ve learned so much here. I’ve tried every way in the book to quit cigarettes so I began my pipe smoking education here :). I found the problem is I just like smoking, but I don’t want the massive health problem. I am a researcher by nature and after much study I’ve learned using tobacco like my ancestors of old is the way to go. I can puff and enjoy a smoke all while my lungs are already clearing. You should go watch the cigarette process BTW...it’s like dragging tobacco through a SEWER and then selling to you to smoke.

Inhalation of any kind of smoke is a health hazard. That being said, people should be able to do what they want with their bodies, and if that means doing activities that may lead to cancer or other serious health issues, they should be allowed to do so. This is how I live my life, and at least how I feel, others should live their lives as well. But again its their lives they live how they want to.

I'm a relatively infrequent smoker of cigars, and have recently ordered a pipe and some English blends of various strengths because cigars are just too expensive for how often I want to smoke them. Can't help but want to smoke a cigar every couple days and when you get up to 8-10 decent Cubans a month (Romeo y Julietas, Hoyo De Monterrey, etc) it gets prohibitively expensive as I'm not what you'd call a Bilderberg or even a Rothschild.

We all make a conscious decision to smoke. Whether by pipe, cigar, pipe, etc. None of it matters. Smoke is not good for the lungs or mouth in any known universe. Some folks last longer than others. I lost my mom and dad to copd and lung cancer, directly related to smoking. No question- I very much enjoyed cigs, cigars, and sometimes the pipe over 25 years. I now have COPD to show for it. No question- I miss the pleasure of it. On the other hand- smoke of any kind is just straight-up not healthy for humans, nor any other animal for that matter. I wish there was a way to smoke without consequence- believe me.

regardless of the stigma against vaping. you should try it. buy a decent pen and tank setup and kick back. The flavor is full, the heat is mild at best for pens. and you don't have to worry about anything until that tank empties out. When the tank is done. refill, and continue. When the battery is done after about 5 days for a slow vaper, 3-4 for a mild, 2-3 for moderate, 1-2 for a serious vaper. charge up and go. in 2-3 weeks change out the tank's coil and start again or if you get a new flavor change early. This setup is simple and easy to get into. The fancy shit isn't for anyone who enjoys the slow smolder of thought that comes from a pipe.

Well, I never smoked by choice when younger, except second hand smoke and I hated it being a severe asthmatic. Now that I am in my late 50's and asthma under control, and I realize that mortality is a reality after losing almost all my elder relatives except my one uncle who was a pipe man, I have become a pipe man. Why? As I said, my asthma is under control and I do like a pipe. My brother, a Marlboro man, has survived throat cancer, and now my sister a smoker too, is battling lung cancer....so far so good. My other two sisters and mother, all smokers, are gone now, but not from smoking. My father too, a pipe man till the end, lived till his 80's. So, I say, what the heck....I am not gonna live forever, and a pipe relaxes me....so I will enjoy it till something ends my being here. Do everything in moderation and don't inhale. I think I have inhaled enough smoke when it was acceptable and I didn't find it so. How ironic now that it is not acceptable, but I find it so, because more of my life is behind me than in front of me. lol. Who wants to live forever anyway! Nothing is good for you on this planet filled with monsters called humans....events in Las Vegas proved that. Just enjoy the time you have here and cause no harm to anyone else.

In the 90s I read in a magazine where the CDC had done a ten year study about cigar and pipe smoking. I can't remember the exact numbers but they found that those that smoke like one cigar a day or those that smoked like three pipe bowls a day were no different than non-smokers.

My great grandfather smoked filterless cigarettes since he was 11. He died at 98 from lung cancer. My grandmother smokes and had smoked since I was a alive. She's going on 85/6. My mom had breast cancer, she had chemo with a woman who never smoked and had lung cancer. My father died at 48 from sepsis, like others have stated life's too short. I know the risks, I'll enjoy my 2-4 pipes a day

Good video. Fair on your analysis. I for one use a filter, I drink water during my smoke, and when finished I brush my teeth with an electric toothbrush and also the roof of my mouth as far back as possible. I then scrape my tonge with a tonge scraper. This process throughly cleans my entire mouth. There are no guarantees in life, but I feel that you can enjoy pipe smoking and still help prevent any health issues by following a thorough cleaning routine.

I found this helpful. Half of my family are cigarette or cigar smokers, and the other half isn't. I got into pipe smoking through my hobby as a reenactor, but I have cautiously watched how often i smoke, which has been a good habit of keeping. While I tend to smoke on my weekend encampments, it isn't every time, and it is only with a certain group of friends. I also smoke at home, but I have kept it to once or twice every couple of months.

Thanks for the info. I had a dental checkup yesterday and my hygienist told me that the roof of my mouth looked more leathery than before. My dentist said it was caused by the smoking but that it wasn't anything malignant. He just told me to smoke in moderation. I also looked for answers online and found similar information that you found. Funny but I found one that said unless you smoked more than ten bowls a day, your risks are similar to non-smokers.
I'll find that study and link it here. Thanks again.

Pretty much what I practice in my pipe enjoyment. My Dr., when he asked if I smoke, I described my pipe smoking and such, he said: Yeah, you're not "technically" a smoker so, you'll not have that on your chart.
I've spoken with fellow pipe smokers and we've often gabbed about the downsides. As long as one practices good brushing and keeping one's face clean, it really reduces risks. Sipping a cool drink is a good tip, and I've been practicing that too. It does help, and pipe bite happens when one is drawing too much, and too hard, so you're getting hotter smoke and, making your pipe burn like a furnace. All around bad! Gotta sip and take your time.
    Good video.

Will chime in as veteran vapor and retired paramedic who spent a career treating copd patients. I switched to vaping in ‘09 and literally vaped 20 hrs a day and loved it - no doubt in my mind that vaping is healthier than inhaling tar and products of combustion but then again having your lungs constantly filled with vaporizes Propyleneglycol and vegetable glycerin along with nicotine and flavorings is healthy ether. I always loved smoking and vaping allowed me to live on the vape but I found that I no longer took or enjoyed my “smoking breaks”. Recently I retired and just happened upon the YTPC and got interested. I have now been smoking a pipe for a month and have not vaped in a week and am starting to off load my e cig gear. I am already feeling better in my lungs. My lungs were starting to feel “dry” or “heavy” on the vape , though I didn’t have a cough. Now just on the pipe I just feel like I’m breathing a little looser and better. I initially was smoking way too hot and getting a lot of tongue bite but with your guidance I’m now got things cooled way down and my bowls are much more pleasurable. I will say that I enjoy the smell of the smoke in my beard so won’t be washing the smoke off my face lol. Thanks for all the great content Muttinchops 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

DevoShreds well, you’re not qualified at all to judge whether or not some one else is qualified to present information.
All doctors are trained to do research, and also read papers and research and interpret their findings to apply to their practice. Medical research literature is peer reviewed and methodologically refined such that such the results derived are meant to be cross-referencible between different studies, both concurrent, or at different times.
Thereafter, the art of doctoring (specialists all go through the same foundation years), comes into play with regards to applying the derived knowledge to the practice of making medical decisions.
Yep, I’m a medical doctor who hasn’t chosen a specialty yet, so I am exposed to all specialties. 😎

Wyatt Hayes - Bias, but more reality, it’s reality that smoking can cause cancer, but when it comes to pipe smoking the chance is low, how many times have you heard either in the news or studies that have been conducted that smoking a pipe causes cancer, for me it’s almost none, we are lumped into the category of “Smoking” Smoking causes cancer, so when your out in public Smoking your pipe and someone says smoking that pipe will give you cancer, you know the reality. 👍👍👍

I have plans to start pipe smoking, and my main concern is how it will affect my gums. At present my gums are fine, but I don't have much to go on if they start to recede.
However, if I treat pipe tobacco like I treat alcohol, I think I should be fine. I was a teetotaller in my youth; didn't even drink beer until my mid 20s, and then only rarely and never more than a pint at a time. In my early 30s I branched out to liquor - whiskey, cognac, rum - but still only occasionally, and just one unit at a time. I may indulge a bit extra on Christmas, but to this day I have never been drunk. And I figure that booze is surely worse than beer, but with the amounts I drink, what difference does it make. And if people can smoke cigarettes habitually, several times a day for years and years and the associated problems don't even happen to all of them, I shouldn't be too worried about smoking the pipe maybe... once a week?
