We pipe smokers are few and far between. If you happen to meet one in the wild, we’ll be happy to share a pinch of tobacco and a chat! That’s the natural milieu of pipe smoking. The powers that be demonize pipe smoking because they fear men, sitting and smoking and talking. Because doing so, we start seeing and noticing and planning.
I actually just picked up the hobby last night because i was in a cigar lounge and saw an old dude smoking a pipe. My curiousity turned into a 1.5 hour long conversation and the purchase of my own pipe. Can’t wait till it gets to my house
I just started a pipe smoking club a couple of months ago where I work, and we smoke pipes or cigars every day at lunchtime, if it is a Friday, we go for a pint too! Happy piping fellas!
I can feel the Carolinas in that accent, interestingly the accent descends from British aristocracy, even though some people see it as a backwoods accent now.
Pipe smoking for me, is far more therapeutic and calming than cbd. I quit cigarettes 3 months ago and just got into pipe tobacco. I wish I knew years ago
I have a lovely Gandalf pipe and it's been hard to smoke. I'm looking forward to trying things I've learned here. No one tells you anything about smoking a pipe! Especially women! Thank you. 😊
I’ve been into pipe tobacco for about 15 years, and I agree with everything this guy said. He’s legit. Maintaining that Goldilocks draw throughout the entire smoke (not too tight, not too loose) is the difference between a great smoke and frustration.
I just enjoyed my first pipe in a couple months last night. It’s unfortunate that it is becoming a dying art at my college. For those saying it is a health risk; as a rule, I only smoke or drink if others do it with me to help keep me accountable, and I never smoke cigarettes. As others are saying in the comments, as long as you smoke in moderation, you’ll be fine.
And my uncle smokes for 50 plus years cigars and pipe tobacco every day. Never touched cigarettes. And passed in his mid 90s he always says stress kill you faster than tobacco (not cigarettes, they will kill you) but cigars and pipe is way better bc it relieves stress

I just inherited 20 VERY nice pipes from my father after he passed. He was a man a very few pleasures but when he did take something on he did it well hence the very nice pipes. I'm learning how to clean and restore them and smoke them. I learned a paste of water and baking soda will clean the stems incredibly will and $5 bottle of mineral oil will have them shining in no time.
Excellent video. I struggle with getting my tobacco packed appropriately. It always seems too loose or too tight. Also, its good to hear the bit about relighting. I have a tendency to try to keep it going at all cost lol.
I would love to share tobacco pipe smoking with these two gentlemen I am from South Wales UK thank you for making it easy for everyone to know about pipe smoking
Studies show the mortality rate for pipe smokers is the same as non smokers. I read a thesis citing many studies. The author concluded the therapeutic benefit outweighs risks.
While cleaning my aunts house after her passing, I found my grandfather's pipe. I decided I want to learn to smoke it and found this site. I happen to be a Catholic deeply interested in Catholic theology. Count me as a new Subscriber.
Proper pipe ashtrays have a cork knocker for tapping your pipe. The cork will not damage your pipe. Another don’t is do not puff too quickly on your pipe. The bowl will get too hot to touch. I recommend Peterson pipes of Dublin and Savinelli pipes of Italy. Dr. Grabow pipes are very good too. My first pipe was a Grabow and it lasted me 20 years. It would have been longer, if i had been more careful. The bowl slipped off the stem and cracked the shank. 🙁
One of the ways that you can counter the bowl getting too hot for the touch when you're wanting to puff quickly is to breathe the smoke in through your mouth and hold the smoke in your mouth while breathing out of your nose. This will cause an airflow back through the stem and out of the bowl, which in turn, doesn't trap as much heat (you'll notice smoke coming out of the bowl). Obviously, only do this for as long as you want/can while holding the smoke in your mouth. ;) It'll cause a nice big puff of smoke when decide to finally exhale from your mouth.
Bought my first pipe-a Doc Grabow-in 1963 at Chanute AFB, Illinois. I was schooled by two different pipe veterans over the years, and I definitely believe that a pipe MUST be broken in (seasoned). If not done so properly, you’re going to have a taste to your pipe reminiscent of a recently burnt out building. That’s why you need to build up a ‘cake’ of smoked tobacco inside the bowl, and you don’t accomplish that by just “smoking” the pipe without first gradually breaking the pipe in.
I started smoking pipes in university about 12 years ago (32 now). Don’t do it as regularly as I’d like to because the tobacco tax in Australia is up to something ridiculous like $1600 per kilogram. Back when I started I thought it was ridiculous at $550/kg. Our government sure likes to take our money off us.
I have fond memories of my grandfather relaxing in his lazy boy recliner smoking his pipe and cherry tobacco. He lived to be 94 years old....I'm approaching my 51st bday this next week and will be purchasing my first pipe to carry-on the tradition.

Things those gentlemen fail to mention: If you plan on smoking more than A pipe, have more than one pipe with you. You need to let it rest, so switching between pipes is a good choice. Also, never ever scrape that coal residue you get on the inside of the pipe completely. Scrape the excess that builds and then you always leave some, this helps with many things, from the quality of the smoke you have to maintaining your pipe.
I swear, Dr Harrelson could've been the diction coach that tutored Val for his portrail of Doc Holiday. Such a pleasure to listen to him talk about pipes and tobacco.
I use a bamboo chopstick. The thick end is the tamper, the tapered end is for scraping out the dottle. Works good for loosening the tobacco if it's too tight, too.
When I first started smoking a pipe years ago, I worked with an old pipe smoker, he showed me how to clean, light, smoke it etc, he used to rotate his pipes, also if you buy a new one, half fill it, until it's broke in, I have heard of older pipe smokers, soaking pipes before using them, a new one will never taste right until broke in, don't get it too hot either

New to the pipe crew, im getting one for fathers day. Btw happy fathers day to you all. But honestly im coming from smoking Black and Mild Casino cigars. And need to lower my habit. Ive looked into pipes for a while now and looking into all the education i can find. So, thank you all. Im looking into what is a good first tobacco i should try. Nothing too expensive and not too cheap. Just right as a usual morning with a cup of coffee and the morning news. And also, one that my wife wont complain about too much. Nice to meet you all. I Recall my father had a favorite blend made locally by the same shop that repaired his pipes by the bagful. He tended to break stems, especially if someone annoyed him. I have his pipe stand but none of his pipes. I think I will buy myself a pretty pipe even if I don't smoke it.
I wouldn't say my palate is especially refined, but some aromatics (even those without deertongue, and especially Lakelands) will absolutely ghost a pipe, at least for a bowl or two. It's not a big deal to me, I just deal with it, but it would definitely bother some people. I say just pick your subsequent blend with consideration for what you just smoked, and you'll be fine. Have something neutral like a plain burley or dark fired Kentucky after your strongly flavored aromatics, and smoke that until you can no longer detect the ghost. Or even pick another aromatic which might synergize with the previous blend. Ghosting isn't necessarily a bad thing.
This is the first video from this channel I've watched i don't know either of you but that guy with the beard and glasses, Gaw-Lee i could listen to him talk all day
Thanks for saying that seasoning does not do anything. After years of pipe smoking i realized that seasoning a pipe does not do anything. The only thing we need to do is to just smoke it properly by not letting the pipe get extremely hot
Started my morning looking for reviews of a Camacho cigar and down the rabbit hole I went thinking about why don't I smoke a pipe any more and landed here being fascinated by this mans accent.
Possibly too late , but I’ve a question on pipe smoking and health. My wife and perhaps family are against smoking. Now I’ve lit up a few times a year if only to enliven some memories of my grandfather. I do enjoy it but it’s probably not worth the fight to do regularly as the big C word would be thrown at me . I am also of the larger stature , so I get it from that end as well. Aside from my grandfather I’ve only ever met another and he was probably a chain smoker and probably not the best example as he said he was dying and his teeth were stained black but he still lived his piping . Can it be done, smoking in a healthy way ? Thanks
Healthy, no, it's just like drinking in moderation chances is not as high, but there's always a chance, even non-smokers, but by keeping good oral health like flossing good tootbrushing the chances are very low Avoid touge bite, and by having a healthy weight and diet, you can also reduce risks A youtuber clif Higgins, his youtube name is pipeninja, which has a video on risks. I recommend watching it. he's a dentist, so he knows what he's talking about Also, don't inhale the smoke
It’s like anything else in life, moderation is key. First of all you’ve stated your a bigger man, you should fix that. The best thing you can do to try and prevent any issues is get your weight , nutrition, and fitness on point. Secondly, I wouldn’t recommend smoking every day. Make it a treat just like an alcoholic drink. 1-2x a week at max.
Cigs are bad bc the additives. Vape is bad bc of the synthetics. Pipes are good (if you use quality tobacco). Stress is the worst for you, pipe smoking reduces stress more than any trace negative effects from the tobacco. Tobacco is neuropreservative that is medicinal. The war on tobacco is an experiment in medical tyranny.
Somewhat related to ghosting: I've heard people suggest you let any pipe sit on a stand for three days. Why? Because if it's wood (aka not Meerschaum), it'll get moist from smoking. And if you don't let it dry out over three or so days, the wood will remain wet, then cause it to rot. The nice thing about Meerschaum is it doesn't have that problem. Problem is, it's super fragile. Dropping it once will cause it to break 80% of the time. Also, I didn't know about the "don't take apart a pipe when it's warm" statement. I've been smoking, letting it sit for a few minutes, then picking it up I'd take apart, and pipe clean both pipe and stem. Haven't seen any issues, but really I don't let my pipe get super hot in the first place. Finally, I use a cork nub to "knock" the ash out gently. I think from now on I'll scoop it out like he suggests, then do a few knocks to get anything else out. Thank you.
Yes that is the reason, although typically once a pip is a broken in you can smoke it every day for 3-5 days without problems as long as you only smoke that same pipe once per day. And then after ward give it a three day rest
You probably won’t see this but I’ve been searching for years. My great grandpa use to smoke this House of Windsor / field and stream tobacco. They don’t make it anymore… is there anything that smells like that that still in production if you know? You’d be helping me be close to my great grandpa again!
Good day. I have bought a cheap pipe to test if i like smoking pipes or not. Although cheap it is hand made and I'm fond of it. The problem it has is that the hole of the stem is too tight to fit a cleaner in it. How do you clean it in that case?
Let a pipe rest 7 days before re-smoking after cleaning it. This is why you need 7. Season a pipe with bourbon or whiskey overnight first time (a light rub will do in the bowl). Smoke a full bowl first time to get the cake going. Always clean 2 hours after smoking. A well-packed, correctly lit pipe, even when talking, does not need to be re-lit if done correctly by my experience. I've gone into a drug store with the pipe lit in my pocket and 10 minutes later came out and stoked it back to life no issues many times in my life.
It's a big part of my job not only to make smoking mistakes clear, but also to create new pipe smokers. there is a need for solidarity among smokers, while currently there is a lot of envy in appearance.... in my opinion more and more smokers smoke a pipe and not tobacco...
just bought a pair of used but decent pipes. one classic straight and a smaal vest pocket pipe... Thinking of quitting my gigarettes and the pipe seemed like a way to still enjoy a smoke once in a while and at the same time make it into a bit more enjoyfull and relaxing thing. -But as a bluecollar worker with a sharp tounge and foul mouth I will never be an estinguished gentleman pipesmoker like theese two seem to be! LOL The tips were appreciated though.
@@friederichrex9622 perhaps, but that was always a new years eve thing to me I guess... I finished restoring both pipes already and did a few custom touches to them as well, and even made a pair of matching pipe stands... I quite like them to be honest! :D
That and legislation on flavored tobaccos and vapes b/c it "targets children" which I think is a bunch of crap. If an adult wants apple pie flavored whatever, let them have at it. I haven't seen a commercial or billboard for tobacco since I was 12 years old.

This is the first video from this channel I've watched i don't know either of you but that guy with the beard and glasses, Gaw-Lee i could listen to him talk all day
Invited him back.
God bless you guys.
Thanks for saying that seasoning does not do anything. After years of pipe smoking i realized that seasoning a pipe does not do anything. The only thing we need to do is to just smoke it properly by not letting the pipe get extremely hot
I did not expect to hear the voice of my home when I saw that man
Started my morning looking for reviews of a Camacho cigar and down the rabbit hole I went thinking about why don't I smoke a pipe any more and landed here being fascinated by this mans accent.
2:50 "You need to clean the doddle outta the bottom of the bowl" My favourite sentence in UA-cam history.
Thanks
Healthy, no, it's just like drinking in moderation chances is not as high, but there's always a chance, even non-smokers, but by keeping good oral health like flossing good tootbrushing the chances are very low
Avoid touge bite, and by having a healthy weight and diet, you can also reduce risks
A youtuber clif Higgins, his youtube name is pipeninja, which has a video on risks. I recommend watching it. he's a dentist, so he knows what he's talking about
Also, don't inhale the smoke
It’s like anything else in life, moderation is key. First of all you’ve stated your a bigger man, you should fix that. The best thing you can do to try and prevent any issues is get your weight , nutrition, and fitness on point.
Secondly, I wouldn’t recommend smoking every day. Make it a treat just like an alcoholic drink. 1-2x a week at max.
@@RLS_91 I agree with you I myself only smoke 1 time a week and I exercise alot too
Cigs are bad bc the additives.
Stop worrying is the best way to stay healthy
And then after ward give it a three day rest
that looong as churchwarden looks absolutely sick. could you please tell me the name / brand?
If you find anything about it, please let me know! A few quick Google searches of variations on "extra long churchwarden/pipe" didn't really help
His voice caught me so off guard. I started laughing, gives him some good character
You probably won’t see this but I’ve been searching for years. My great grandpa use to smoke this House of Windsor / field and stream tobacco. They don’t make it anymore… is there anything that smells like that that still in production if you know? You’d be helping me be close to my great grandpa again!
Masters of the art of smoking.
Love too see it such a cool hobby 👌
My biggest problem is using tobacco with great aroma and yet its nasty in the mouth. Is the flavor suppose to mirror both smell and taste?
On ghosting don't finish off a cigar in your pipe unless you have a dedicated last bit of the cigar pipe because it will taste like a cigar for ages.
Still have my Dad’s Dr. Grabow from the 60’s…
Good day. I have bought a cheap pipe to test if i like smoking pipes or not. Although cheap it is hand made and I'm fond of it. The problem it has is that the hole of the stem is too tight to fit a cleaner in it. How do you clean it in that case?
His accent reminds me of Brandon Farris. Love it. Makes me think of A Time To Kill and Steel Magnolias with a touch of Blanche Devereaux
Love the guests' accent!
What is the name of the pipe that the dr. Is holding?
Maybe cigars would suit you better.
@@friederichrex9622 perhaps, but that was always a new years eve thing to me I guess... I finished restoring both pipes already and did a few custom touches to them as well, and even made a pair of matching pipe stands... I quite like them to be honest! :D
I like way of y'all teaching ❤
i am genuinely worried of how many people are not familiar with pipe smoking culture, tobacco brands might pull their blends from markets.
That and legislation on flavored tobaccos and vapes b/c it "targets children" which I think is a bunch of crap. If an adult wants apple pie flavored whatever, let them have at it. I haven't seen a commercial or billboard for tobacco since I was 12 years old.
Can anyone recommend a pipe that doesn't have plastic resin as part of the mouthpiece? Preferably in the area of $50?
For red dead redemption 3 they need to get this man to do VA
Great video for the tobacco smoking pipe newbies :) Me!
I've just smoked my first pipe (not a euphemism) and Instantly sounded like this cool cat. And I'm a Brit.
Omg I love his voice 🤗
