Maybe I am giving the Xbox 360 D-Pad too much hate. I keep saying "I'm going to use the DS D-Pad.", and yet, I am still using the 360 D-Pad, XD
3rd Metroidvania game on the GBA. FOllow the story of Soma, an ordinary high school student, who goes to a castle and learns about his skill of dominance. Oh, and Batman is dead. Permanently. CotM was hard. HoD was easy (TOO easy). AoS is just right. The game uses the good ol' SotN formula. It also plays a bit TOO much like SotN (Soma can use all sorts of weapons.) The game also has a system called the Tactical Soul System, where you assign 3 type of souls (Bullet aka Up+Attack; Guardian, use by holding R; and Enhance, which activates automatically), Mix and match for a favorite setup.
Game info thingamabob: standard ol' 100% map playthrough on Hard Mode (used a save that had clear data). I did do one of me going through the game, but I decided "Why not 100% soul?". So...started over, made a VBA movie file (rerecording FTW), and took it from there. I probably won't do Dawn of Sorrow 100% souls. It is a pain. Hard Mode also gives access to Silver Gun, Death's Sickle, Death's Robe, Tear of Blood, and Kaiser Knuckles. Decided to throw in all 3 endings (defeating Maharg without equipping specific souls, getting Game Over at final boss, and..well, the True Ending). Jumping and backdashing will be abused to hell and back. Jumping is to cancel attack animation (for those that can be cancelled, like the majority of short swords and Claimh Solais) and going up slopes. Backdash is used to also cancel attack animations. From there, I can do another jump or use a Bullet Soul. Mix them together for high damage output (jump attack-ground attack-backdash-jump attack~).
Some stuff: I decided to take the "backdoor" to the Underground Reservoir (from the entrance near the Floating Garden). This way, I can quickly enter the Forbidden Area (enter by using Curly, Manticore, or Devil Soul to get past the waterfall) and get the super-powerful Claimh Solais (arguably the best damn weapon in the game.) From there, I hardly switch weapons (I switch on Suiluj because he resists Holy. Gungner is where it's at.) Also, near the end, I missed out on two rooms, the passage from Reservoir-Castle Gate Merman room, and one room in the Clock Tower. =_= After I get 100% souls, I go back to pick up the Chaos Ring, which pretty much grants infinite MP.
WIth that said, Red Minotaur + Lubicant = broken game.
Trick of the trade: Luck manipulation: The RNG in this game is meh. I had to look around the interwebz to figure it out...sorta. Found info on what address to look at. Basic RNG manipulation is caused by attacking with weapon, backdashing, and using Guardian Soul. However, some enemies, attacks, and areas scramble the hell out of the RNG (Catoblepas, Creaking SKull fireball attack, and the tub in the Arena to name a few). For some enemies, I go through the RNG by attacking the air and spamming Flying Armor (or other Guardian Souls) until I get the soul to come out. For some more other enemies, I do a grind of 5 or so kills (it isn't that bad) in hopes of getting a soul. Others I get without any effort. LOL So...if I am spamming a Guardian Soul and attacking without killing, I am going through the RNG.
Fun fact: Legion soul is missable. Don't destroy the 4 outer shells and kiss that awesome soul goodbye. Sky Fish can only be obtained by using Chronomage soul. Mandragora can be obtained by killing it when it is above surface before it screams.
Fun fact 2: English errors: Curly (Kali), Lubicant (Rubicant), Skula (Scylla), Skull Millione (Scarmiglione), Ronginus' Spear (Longinus' Spear), Zombie Officer soul (you can recover from damage animation in midair by pressing the jump button), Sherman Ring, Gungner? (Gungnir), mid-jump o_o, lid-jump. XD -

Agreed & metroid as well. I hate the prime series...side scrolling is so much better. Hopefully we can see one more brand new 2d metroid before nintendo stops making them...

I wish Nintendo would allow Konami to rerelease all 3 GBA Castlevania games for the 3DS.
Konami doesn't care about it's franchises. That's why Metal Gear Solid is getting a Left 4 Dead clone and it's rumored that Metal gear Solid, Castlevania AND Silent Hill are being made into Pachinko machines since gambling is apparently a big problem in Japan and stands to make them more money then making quality AAA games.
Gambling is outlawed in Japan... You win prizes, not money....
Considering that this is yet another lazy walking simulator, it's pretty unlikely that it will ever get actual gameplay.
DarthSidious63 You can sofmod your New Nintendo 3DS and inject GBA roms as Virtual Console titles using a program called Ultimate VC Injector.
Google is your friend ;)
And it plays exactly like GBA because it's no emulation but pure GBA hardware goodness turning your N3DS into a bonafide AGS 101 and you can even play in pixel perfect mode.

There was no game based on Demon Wars of 1999. Wish Konami got onto that because it would have detailed Julius battle with Dracula.
The background noise in the Underground Cemetery before you face Legion = pure nightmare fuel.
This is an amazing game. This is one of my top 3 favorite Castlevania games; along with Portrait of Ruins & Symphony of the Night.
Hammer's theme sounds like something out of Advance Wars
What a fun game. Music is good to great. Story is just like the other GBA castlevanias. Not much but good enough. Exploration os rather simple, didn't get lost much. Difficulty not much. I found the final boss kinda odd, but the soul mechanic was amazing.

There isn't a castlevania that takes place in 1999, Aria of Sorrow refers to the events of 1999 though

My first and only Castlevania I ever played!! A couple years ago, downloaded it!! The corridor theme is awesome!! Also, I heard that the other Castlevania games play like the other guy in this game...which I did not enjoy...so this is the only one I could possibly like!!

@@kamith3984 I played this when I was 6, but I got stuck at the first ledge with grave keeper because I didn't know how to use souls. I replayed when I was 8 and sort of brute forced my way through everything lmao. I got stuck on Death for a bit becaused I used up all my potions fighting Headhunter. I was able to beat the game later on though, and discovered a few years later that I could get a different ending.
They never made a game about it but yeah, Aria of sorrow talked about it a little. I say the next handheld should be about the Demon Castle war of 1999.

Hey, one of the reasons that I did not get the soul from the Gargoyle is that I did not find the "Claimh Solais" weapon yet. Here I was wacking him constantly and no soul came out!

I'm nostalgic about this game, I had played the other two having heard beforehand about them, but this came to me with no idea that it existed or of it's plot or anything, everything was a new discovery and I was more intrigued for the plot than I ever was with the previous two.

Jeezzz!! I was getting ready to just call it quits for the night because in your video right around 1:58:49 where you have to push that wooden boat down the dry rails and you have to jump on it just in time and right about when the boat crashes straight into a wall you have to jump to make the high ledge above....I seriously must of tried it like 50 times not understanding why you made it look soo easy but I really wasnt even getting close up to the ledge....and I kept just replaying your video to try to see what I could be doing wrong...and that's when i realized this tiny thing that was stopping me from reaching up to the ledge was because after i would push the boat down the hill i would hit the jump button to jump up into it....but then I figured out the important detail was after pushing the wooden boat you just simply walk through the boat and he can still get on it and then that way you still have your normal and double jump to use to make it up there!! Lol I kept assuming you would have to jump into the boat not just keep walking forward and he just hops on but if anybody gets stuck on that part that's most likely the reason hopefully this might help others
i like near the end where Soma Cruz level is high, powerful, Superspeed, SuperStrength, flying, and has all of the powers and weapons, that’s cool
@ThePaulvera Konami has never made a Castlevania game that took place in 1999. It's only referenced in the 2 Sorrow games and mentioned very briefly in Portrait of Ruin.
I would like to see an Castlevania game that takes place in 1999 & how Julius put an end to Dracula & his resurrection. And maybe go back to an style of old school Castlevania instead of another Metroidvania kind.
Not that I hate the Metroidvania style. Oh no! I love it & I prefer it more than the old school style. But at the same time though, I would like to see an old school style Castlevania game returned for once.

This is such a great game, almost the equal of Symphony of the Night, it's just missing a couple of things-- fun/useless items, and special moves for the weapons (and a larger variety of weapons/equipment). If it had that it'd be nearly perfect. The huge variety of stuff, whether or not it was all completely/directly useful, was one of the fun parts of SotN.

@BirdiewasHere he's not a vampire but he was born when dracula was killed giving him one of dracula's powers specifically the Power of Dominance over Souls so when he kills enemies he can take their soul and use it to use the enemy's abilities

Jus finished this game and now I understand the hype for it. Def the 2nd best castlevania game behind SOTN, period. Hopefully we can get more games like this esp The Last Faith is looking to be the closest thing to SOTN modern day.
Grim Guardian is another game coming up, that carries that spirit of SOTN metroidvania in that universe.
How are you getting all those enemy powers? I'm at the same spot as you @ 19:34 but I dont have near as many enemy powers as you got for some reason alls I got is Skeleton: Tiny Devil, Winged Skeleton, Bat, Ghost, skeleton.....and then just a Flying armor, and a Zombie are you supposed to hit a certain button after you kill new enemies to gain their powers? I thought you just earn them after killing certain enemies
I was born in 1999, and when I played this game as a child, and this game said that the reincarnation of Dracula was born the same way in 1999, I thought:
"Damn it, maybe I am the reincarnation of Dracula?"

If you pay attention you can see that he's also doing some RNG manipulation for some of them.
Castlevania Aria Of Sorrow questions: At 21:27 what weapon do you have equipped? Reason I ask is that on my game I'm playing I have equipped the swordblade that does 240 HP damage to the enemies, and while I visited some places I tried over 30 times to get the soul from the POISON WORM in the Underground Reservoir area and no soul flew by. Also in the RESTRICTED AREA, the "Forbidden Place" where you get the mimic soul, there are the Werewolf Jaguar and the 2 gray Gargoyles in this area and I tried to farm for their soul and no soul came up. What weapon works the best and what level of luck do I have to be at to get their souls?
