@@griffinbaker3509 Korra's romance with Mako ends terribly and gives way to an even worse retread of the love triangle. The conflict is a lot more black and white than both before and since. Amon is great in concept but terrible in execution IMO. Gradually the story stripped away everything about him that was interesting and basically nothing remained. His motivation? Petty, and the tragic elements were faked (down to that cheesy peel-off scar.) His powers? Also faked, albeit with the buff that Bloodbending got. His intelligence? Frankly non-existent in some parts. And his ultimate defeat? A deus ex machina of Korra getting access to Airbending out of nowhere, as though that was separate from her bending in general. Amon is the Goku Black of Avatar; FANTASTIC introduction, weak as heck finish.

I find it very interesting how if you take the avatars in chronological order ,
every one is working on overcorrecting at the regrets of the previous one had.
If one was all work on the physical world , the next would focus on the spirit world to the detriment of the physical one .
(the one who lost his wife to the face thief is the second one)
Aang was took time to run away from his duties and focused on the spiritual side , where Korra egerly runs to her duties as avatar but cant sit down to meditate .

The Red Lotus was an AWESOME concept imo. Whatever problems season 2 had, it did lead to a few really cool villains. We got the see just how IMPORTANT the Air Nomads passivity actually was, when someone without such hangups gains their powers and it leads to a really BRUTAL death. And the no-armed chick with waterbending combat tentacles? I wish she had more screen time, she was so cool.

  • @MDiarmeid

Gotta be honest, i think Korra is an interesting character who got screwed by a surprisingly sloppy presentation and execution. You have an avatar who basically have no real identity outside of being the avatar as a direct consecuence of being trained since such a young age, which is kind of the reason why they used to wait till they grow before reveal their fate to them. With Korra they had her training in a closed and controled enviroment the reason being Zaheer but still was a very negative thing for Korra both as the avatar and as a person, of course she didnt developed any spiritual bond. And my issue is that they finally started to tackle "aspects" of this issue in book 3 and 4, and parts of the first one. And i remember picking up this since season 1 and waiting for them to finally adress it, hence why book 3 and 4 works for me. But it also keep getting sidetracked by other plots thing and the whole thing end up getting diluted....
I honestly like legend of korra a looot, but there is a looot of things that could ve been done better, imo
Once again excelent video, love yout work!

I know Azula & Ozai are understandably considered the best Avatar villains, but I personally love Kuvira the most. Her personality, the way she is a dark mirror of Korra, plus Zelda Williams’ badass voice acting!

    • @Mrryn
      @Mrryn Рік тому +3

I stand by the opinion that the villains in TLOK are all better than in ATLA. Azula is nuanced but is still very much a "deliciously evil" villain like Ozai, and Ozai is just Azula in terms of characterization but with less depth. Hell, any depth with Azula isn't even fully touched on in the series; all we get are just one half a line in the beach episode (that's immediately undercut by her in the same sentence), her breakdown in the finale, and...that's it, until you get to the comics. If anything, she just stands as a juxtaposition for Zuko's character rather than have any nuance of her own actually examined.
*Edit: And that's not saying anything about Zhao, who 100% is more a villain/juxtaposition for Zuko's character (again) rather than the main group, on top of being incredibly impotent and basically "failing upwards." The fact that Stuart included him in the list of "great Avatar villains" in this video made me double-take. lol
With the exception of Unalaq, all of the villains of Korra, despite each one having less time as the primary active antagonist as Azula, are at least as effective (if not moreso) as villains while also being complex characters from the start.

    • @R0-83-RT
      @R0-83-RT Рік тому +4

@@Mrryn Funnily enough I think one of the more nuanced villains in Avatar is kind of dead before the events of the show in the form of Firelord Sozin. Unlike Ozai who just seemed to see the other nations as inferior to the Fire nation, Sozin wanted to expand the firenation into the other nations because the firenation was the most prosperous nation due to its technological progress. To Sozin incorporating these ideas into the 4 nations would spread the firenation's prosperity across the world. Sozin's mentality actually is a similar mentality to Kuvira just at a much grander scale.

Look, while I understand the environment in wich Korra as a whole was created, and a lot of it is understandable, I don't think it is an excuse as a whole for her character, there were many times where we can all agree that the execution could have been way better, she is being put multiple times in a badly written script (season 2 ending being the most atrocious), for example korasami doesn't make any sense, Korra should be one of the people Asami hates the most, since she literally stole her bf, how could the writers skip by that? I do understand the legend of Korra as a whole as a very flawed show with very good ideas and parts in the middle, I really wish we could have the writers in a good environment to rewrite this story to address it's clear problems.

As a fanfic writer in my teens... The term Mary Sue was actually quite well known in that circle... Anyway, that's one reason, the other reason is the scummy moves she did to Bolin and Mako. I only watched half of the first book so I can't give full feedback on her whole character but trying to root for someone this... unlikable kinda rubbed me the wrong way. But I am excited for the adult Gaang stuff. Hopefully it'll be good... Anddddd hopefully they don't default to just keep using these characters all the time.
A new "Avatar" would be fine and I'd still want to see that, but I just wish Korra had more support. As for the Asami stuff, I don't mind it but I want to watch Avatar for the cool martial arts, compelling story and politics of a world there there is a very clear divide between groups of people, sure the OG Avatar had romance plots and stuff, but that wasn't the focus right? Again I haven't watched the whole thing so I can't really say but from what I seen in book 1, the weird love... square(?) was kinda meh and from what I heard from the grapevine, it doesn't get better.

    • @TrixyTrixter

Honestly Korra coulda been fine if people in the world actually called her out on her shit. At no point does she really suffer the concequences of her actions without it being imidiately fixed a second later.
My problem is that through the show I never get the feel that she grows, because her response when a thing don't go her way is just to run headfirst in and try and fight it. Which almost always gets her beat the fuck up. The end of season one almost gave her concequenses but they had to deus ex aang in to fix everything and give her undeserved extra stuff like energy bending and free avatar state control.
There are things I do like in the show. But the poor decisions made overshadows it by a huge margin.
Edit: Love triangle does not get better and actively takes up time that could have been better spent. The end resuly is with no buildup at the last episode Korra turns Bi and gets toghether with Assami... The girl who she literaly stole Mako from... And like a day later broke up with...

  • @novacorponline

Honestly, I think the show would have benefited a lot from just ditching that first scene with Toddler Korra. It added nothing to the show for her to have been able to use three bending styles at the age of 6, but a LOT of people took her "I'm the avatar, you have to deal with it" line personally. There was no context for people to understand at the time that it was directed at the network rather than the fans. Its kind of a risk that comes with lashing out at the network in frustration as you can't be clear about your snipe without getting into trouble and fans will think that the things the shows says are directed towards them.
I think most people who were upset by that scene weren't upset that she was a girl; they were upset that it sounded like they were being pre-emptively called sexist.

Also Varick is the best character in the show, change my mind. Yeah... Probably my biggest peeve from the LoK series was the fact that Korra not only didn't respect Mako saying no, she eventually convinced him to dump Asami for her own personal relationship. Then barely 3 episodes into the second season, she dumped him like a hot potato and then pretended it didn't happen when she got her memories back. Then to rub salt in the wound, she turned around and started dating Asami.
Like seriously, I'm all for good LGBQ relationships, but what she did to Mako and Asami was all kinds of fucked up.
You don't convince a guy to dump a girl, then dump the guy to date the girl you convinced him to dump. There is just so much fucked up with that.
(Edit) Finished watching this episode and going to put my steak into this fight. Despite Season 2's complete flop (and the bullshit described above), Korra was a pretty good addition to the Avatar Lore. It certainly doesn't stack up to the original Avatar character development or story imo, but it holds its own. I'm just salty because Korra pulled a dick move dating the girl that she convinced Mako to dump after dumping him.

People may be divided on Korra, but no one can argue about the good it did in ensuring that The Last Airbender wouldn't be a "one hit wonder", we never would have had Amon or any of the upcoming Avatar projects, had Korra not happened the way it did, hell, as pointed out, it was influential even outside of it's own series, we may have never gotten the same versions of other shows with LGBT couples, like Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and honestly countless more, even if you're not necessarily a fan of Korra, you're likely a fan of something that Korra influenced, either directly or indirectly, by making these entertainment companies more open to taking risks, albeit small ones.
Whether it lived up to it's potential or not is a matter of debate, but it's undeniably left it's impact on pop culture as a whole with it's risk taking, iconic and memorable characters, and a megaton of internet thirst.
It's impacted not just the Avatar world, but ours as well, and even if you don't like it, you gotta respect it for breaking every boundary people set for it. It takes guts to follow up after something like Last Airbender.

My opinion on the Korra Seasons
Season 1: Fine. Not excellent but not bad. The Equalist plot thread could have been handled better (showing up latter beyond the token non-bender leader for one). But overall a fine season.
Season 2 (first half): Fine. Had potential...
Season 2 (Back half): ...that it did not live up to AT ALL. Terrible ending to a season.
Season 3: A few characters are being idiots (mostly the president of republic city) but overall a very good season with a VERY compelling villain. (so compelling that if he dialed it back from 11 to closer to a 7 or 8 more people might have agreed with him)
Season 4: I love season 4. Parts of the story are messy, I see three reasons for this.
One, network meddling. As mentioned in the video the network did not believe in this project and messed with it in multiple ways.
Two, lack of a plan from the start. Season 1 was a "one-shot" that became a full campaign, they had no idea where they were going. And by the time they did the Network was ready to pull the plug. I believe that these two reasons (meddling and no plan) are responsible for Korra/Asami not being as fleshed out as people would have wanted
Three, and this one is important... Some of the plot threads in season 4 were SUPPOSED to be messy. Disconnecting from friends for 2+ years then meeting them again. Some of the relationships. Korra's entire trauma storyline. None of those things are nice and neat topics, so make it messy.

I find that looking at it now I can see how the nick executives tampered and harmed the show. I while still loving it wish it had gotten the chance to be as good as it's predecessor and that nick would have given it a chance. I wonder how it's reception would have been if nick stepped back and let the crew do their thing

Honestly, I think the show was pretty okay. I have some issues with it, but these have hardly anything to do with Korra. My problem is with the execution on themes in the different seasons.
Three of the four main antagonists are clearly based on real political ideologies: communism, anarchism and fascism. And I honestly think that that could have been a pretty good idea. But one thing went terribly wrong. The writers didn't seem to understand the ideologies they were trying to portray. And before someone starts complaining: Stories are political, get over it.
Amon with his color scheme and propaganda about equality was clearly meant to symbolize communism. And yes, the main idea that most people have of communism is "taking away money from the wealthy", but that is a very superficial and also false idea of the ideology. But the actual ideology (not necessarily what happens in communist regimes) is more about redistribution and making people use their resources for the common good. And yes, you could have an actual communist villain who doesn't just delete people's bending abilities. How about forcing benders to use their abilities for certain ends (portrayed as the common good)? Or taking bending abilities away from people who uphold the system and giving them to more "worthy" people?
Zaheer was supposedly an anarchist, but the writers portrayed his idea or anarchy as pure violent chaos. And that is not what actual anarchists strive for in any way. Actual anarchism wants to tear down systems of rulership so that no single individual stands above another. It is the strict rejection of hierarchies, not necessarily of laws or rules. Yes, you could have a good anarchist villain who sows the seeds of chaos unwillingly because they use the wrong methods or they underestimate the potential for violence in humans without a governing body to keep them in check. But Zaheer was all about chaos from the very beginning.
Kuvira's strict militarism, iron fist, and other aspects seem to bear a strong similarity to fascism. But just like the first two examples, this is nothing more than a surface level understanding of cliches that have hardly anything to do with the actual ideology. Fascism isn't just "We have a strong military, so let's subdue everyone else". Fascism has very distinct features like an extreme focus on patriotism, anti-intellectualism, othering, indoctrination, and an eternal fight against a paradoxical enemy. Kuvira's actions made the earth empire look fascist at the beginning, but overall it was hardly more than a really badly planned military dictatorship with imperialist tendencies. A good fascist villain would be a populist, not just the guy with the biggest stick who makes everyone bow to him by force.

Her motivation is that she sees tarlok as an oppressive force and now that her eyes are open to the evil he's willing to go for political power she feels the need to confront him. However her methods and mindset are weirdly old fashioned. If this was the aang era directly confronting royalty in private while coopereting with the laws publicly would definitely be maintaining peace while still confronting injustice and shes still in this mindset what people will listen BECAUSE shes the Avatar. Which she's wrong about.

In my opinion, Korra is three (or arguably two) different characters. Season 1 Korra is *fine* as an immature teenager high on herself. I didn't really mind her, although she didn't really strike me as interesting. The way season 1 ended is not a fault of character so I can't hold it against her as a character no matter how much I think the last few episodes of that season was a poorly written and directed mess. Whilst I understand the reason for her introductory scene, I also found it to be exceedingly dumb. Which I suppose is par for the course considering the problems behind the scenes.
Season 2 Korra is a character I loathe. Season 2 was an idiot plot and I cannot stand how she acts there. Korra in this season wasn't the same character as she was in the other seasons in my opinion.
Season 3 and 4 Korra are really cool though. Great growth and change leading her to become a great exploration on struggling with and overcoming trauma. She's very different from what we see in seasons 1 and 2, but not entirely unrecognizable.

The term "Mary Sue" was definitely thrown around back then. The reason why Korra wasn't called one is very simple: she wasn't one.
Mary Sue isn't about the power level. Was Korra OP? As the avatar, yes, definitely. But that doesn't matter. One can be the most powerful character in the setting without being a Mary Sue, or one can be a completely powerless human in a setting with superheroes and still be a Mary Sue. What matters is that she was a flawed character who made plenty of mistakes stemming from her character flaws, and these mistakes had consequences. _This_ is why she wasn't called a Mary Sue.

Majority of people I know who have a problem with Korra's character don't really care about her gender, disliking the character by her gender alone seems stupid in itself regardless considering Avatars the last airbender had a good balance of both well written and fan favorite male & female characters. The thing I heard most people dislike about Korra is that she's overly stubborn and ungrateful, which can turn people off to the character. It's also why I think season 3 is many people's favorite, it tended to keep Korra's abrasiveness & stubbornness, yet still keeps the character likable throughout the story. It also helps that the love triangle wasn't really focused on in season 3 which I don't recall anyone really being invested in when the show was going on.

At least, I _think_ the dark spirit is supposed to be change/chaos, but it's only shown to be destruction and evil.

Shes impulsive, selfish to a fault, makes absolutely terrible decisions, isn't the best at any bending except arguably water and gets her ass handed to her CONSTANTLY. Shes a fabulously flawed and HUMAN character. Yes, the shit around her is less than great writing, but the core of the character is despite her massive gaping flaws she tries to do good. The point of her is that she's supposed to be a bit high on her own farts but that she learns a bit of natural humility and restraint over time then combines that restraint with overcoming some really terrible trauma and growing from that to be respected for her accomplishments and the wisdom of "seeing some crazy shit"
If folks want to say that she's an "Overpowered Mary Sue" (which, hey, I get it, it's not fun to watch such characters), I would say that she does a good job of stepping away from that trope and grows into a relatable and contentious hero for everyone to respect.
Do I like the original series a little better? Sure, but that has very little to do with Korra and more to do with the setting and struggles that the group of kiddos had to deal with as they essentially go on a D&D campaign for three seasons.

this may be extreme, but i would not mind a korra reboot whatsoever. on one hand i see why thatd be bad, it doesnt look good when you backpedal on 4 seasons worth of story. but on the other hand, good looord i hate the damage LoK did to spirit lore, and how absolutely scuffed pro-bending was, and the spirit kites and--
    ive said too much

I wouldn't have started her off as chaotic good, I'd accept arguments for true neutral - but I would have placed her at chaotic neutral.
She had no personal code of ethics, she was flippant, she was highly self righteous/egotistical/arrogant, she sought power for self aggrandizing reasons. That screams chaotic neutral to me.
Most of the things you labeled as chaotic good I would have called chaotic neutral. Most of the things you called chaotic neutral I would have called true neutral or chaotic evil. You also skipped over A LOT of her manipulative, petty, callous, and downright sadistic behavior through the show that oscillates between lawful evil and chaotic evil. She constantly manipulates and abuses her friends. She is quick to explosive acts of unprovoked violence. She brazenly acts with no consideration for collateral damage - often deliberately destroying infrastructure for slap-stick humor.
By my score she ends the show firmly evil and riding the line between chaotic and neutral. As for the inevitable claim that she saved the world, therefore she can't be bad - no, bad people can be motivated to do some good things. They can even be motivated to do good things for good reasons and still be bad. This isn't a Bethesda or Bioware game. You can't fix nuking a city by giving a homeless man 20 bottles of water.
I'll admit, that I only watched the show. However four bumps of Lawful Good from the epilogue comic would still leave her just over the line of neutral evil. Again see aforementioned manipulation, abuse, usurping peaceful order, sociopathy, sadistic tendencies, rancorous destruction, and generally being horrible and petty to everyone to amuse herself.

Ngl the whole Avatar One Good vs Evil spirits breaks the world for me. In Aang spirits were not good or evil, they had different morality. They didn't get corrupted by satan kite... That's the main issue I have with worldbuilding

Season one of Korra is good, but they could have spent less time on the love triangle. Season two of Korra has some pacing issues, starts slow, and spends far too much time on the love triangle that should have been done away with in season one.
Seasons three and four of Korra are better than Last Airbender. They just are.
Amon, Tarrlok, Zaheer and Kuvira are better written and thought out villains than Zuko's sister and dad. Across the board, the use of real world political factions and ideologies forming the motivations and designs of Korra villains makes for better story telling than "Vader with daddy issues" and "Palpatine but voiced by Mark Hamill" that typified the bad guys in Last Airbender. Sure, shamelessly copying Star Wars lead to Dave Filoni being hand picked by George Lucas to helm Clone Wars and by Disney to helm Star Wars TV, but if "Evil Empire is Evil" is your definition of peak fiction you have serious problems.
As for the backup dancers, Naga the polar bear-dog is way more fun on screen and useful in combat than Appa ever was. Naga's fight scenes and occasional jump scares are fantastic. Lin Beifong, and Tenzin have better character arcs than Iroh. And yeah, Mako is a pain in the ass that sucks the fun out of all his undeserved screen time, but Boilin and Varrick more than make up for that.
As for love interests... Asami is just a better all around character than Katara. At best Katara answered the question "What if Princess Leia was less sassy and spent most of her screen time moping about her dead mom?" I'll take Asami being the crew's getaway driver, heist planner, and tech expert any day.
    Which is the better story?
A girl from a poor village finds and wakes up the chosen one, and is then whisked away on a globe spanning adventure to save the world from the evil empire.
She has nothing to lose, so why not take a chance.
    Or...
A girl is born into unimaginable wealth and privilege. She loses her mother, but still grows up to be the obvious for inheritor of her father's empire. Then she bumps into the chosen one who picks fights with her and accuses her father of war crimes. She's completely surprised when her father actually turns out to be evil, captures the chosen one and her crew, then offers his daughter all the wealth and power imaginable in the new world order. All she has to do is let his minions kill the good guys. To everyone's surprise, without a moment's hesitation the daughter saves the good guys and sacrifices all the wealth and power she was born into.
She gives up everything because it's the right thing to do.
Last Airbender tells a simple story about children going on a road trip to fight the evil empire.
Legend of Korra tells a more complicated story about young adults being forced to face real world issues, real world politics, and suffer through the consequences of their actions.
