    I live in S Devon. All this is brutal but true. We have NO 'affordable' homes. I do not agree with second homes at all. Till everyone has a first home, no second homes, thank you. It is a financial nightmare here.

      I sort of agree that the world works better for some than others. But we should be a free country and be able to buy and sell whatever we want to and do and be whatever we want to.
      But all that requires £££. The best way to acquire £££ is to be born lucky into a good home environment, listen to your teachers and make the most of our schooldays, maybe further education but that's not for everybody. It wasn't for me. I did ok but not so well to buy a second home.
      I was lucky, as above, and brought up in a N London superb so the world was my lobster. Doing ok in retirement in a village in Central Europe where the cost of property and living is so much less but a bit boring as after six years I still miss the culture and vibrancy of the UK.
      I enjoy your channel as you keep me in touch with my homeland.

      @@philiptownsend4026 interesting to hear about your experience of living abroad. I don't like the way England conducts itself but I do love where I live and of course, my friends and family. the best way to get money in this country is to inherit it! I think there may be possibilities for communal living.

    Great video Mr Towns! We absolutely LOVE Woolacombe. We live is Stoke, a TurdTown in the true sense of the word, but leave our caravan in Woolacombe over the summer and spend at least 6 weeks of the year down there (before dragging the van back to Turd Central for the winter). We're not at all surprised by the average house price, as the stock is dominated by large properties with a sea view. There are a fair few family homes set back, but a 3-bed town house will still set you back £450k, which would buy you a 6-bed detached home in Stoke. We like to go out of season, and we hear a lot of the locals moaning about the tourists, having returned after letting their homes for the summer! Let's face it, they wouldn't be there without us... co-existence and respect is the key, and thankfully, Woolacombe pulls it off admirably. I'd live there if I could afford it 🙂

    • @Merret22
      @Merret22 2 місяці тому +5

      I live in Woolacombe and you've got it absolutely spot on. I must say 2 things, firstly most people that comes across as a local moved here at some point because they loved it, and there is a very small amount of people that are born and bred here. Second that it's only a very small amount of (narrowminded) people that don't like the tourists, and unfortunately they are the loudest. It's a fantastic place to come on holiday and its a fantastic place to live. And you're right, its outrageously expensive to buy a home here.

    I know why Bigbury and Thurlestone are on this list - The coast there is stunning. I live next to Lustleigh - Beautiful chocolate box town that's like stepping back in time, it's also no wonder that its on this list, but it's not as isolated as you'd think. The moor and many touristy areas are pretty much on its doorstep. Moretonhampstead and Bovey Tracy are both a stones throwaway in either direction, even if the road is a bit pants. If you're a cyclist, you've got the Wray Trail running right through the town, following the path of the old railway. There's even a big department store (Trago Mills) that takes about 20-30ish minutes to cycle to from Lustleigh which is really easy to get to, for those inclined and know how.

    Come to Stoke on Trent for the next turd towns, the city could be an episode all to itself with the 6 towns (although Longton is starting to improve) and there are other smaller towns/villages within Stoke that could feature too such as Abbey Hulton, Blurton, Chell, Northwood and Smallthorne. Could do a few around Newcastle-under-Lyme as well like Silverdale and Chesterton.

    It strikes me that with Salcombe, and other seaside towns and villages, they aren't best accessed from the landward side at all. You don't need a car. You need a boat. In fact many of these places were originally fishing communities. Their economy and raison d'être was based on the sea. Owning a boat would certainly be fun, and might even be quite practical. Motor or sail along the coast to a bigger place like Plymouth, park the boat in the marina, and catch a train to London. If that sounds expensive, that's because it is. These aren't places for poor people.

    First part of the solution is to get rid of the regulatory, environmental planning controls and let houses be built where people want them. Too much nimbyism and worry over newts, ‘affordable housing’ and limiting drive space. The second part is far more difficult ; the very low mortgage rate coupled with the low rate of return on savings is forcing people into the only asset which is appreciating which is property. As the planning bureaucrat’s restrict the building of property in areas of high demand, it has become very expensive. Of course no investor in such assets wants a fall in the value of their property and therefore there is an enormous incentive to restrict building and support the environmental lobbyists in doing so.

    You'll be happy to know that Devon, Cornwall and Somerset councils are now enforcing something called the Localisation Act 2011, which means you cannot rent or purchase a property there unless you meet the same conditions as wanting social housing -- must have connections, such as relatives locally, a job in the local area, and have a family history there.
    For my own nomination, I think its time you ventured into the Midlands, especially the East Midlands, around Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. Lots of it is run down, but we also have a number of posh areas. Theres a lot of ex-mining communities (check out the aptly named Coalville, complete with closed colliery in the town centre!) so theres a lot of places to explore.

    • @forceninewinds
      @forceninewinds 2 місяці тому +1

      yes and no. For example, in teignbridge and east devon you need to have a local connection to rent social housing, but you don't need that in Exeter. anyone can just go onto Devon Home Choice and bid on a property in the city without a local connection criteria coming into play. A few properties may have a covenant on them for a local connection in the city, but that is few and far between.
      I have known quite a few people move into the city because they 'think it's nice' and because 'they can get to the sea and countryside easily' from Exeter, but then complain bitterly about the cost of living, how poor the transport links are and how badly paid the majority of jobs are compared to the area they moved in from (usually the midlands and the south east).

    This happened to Cornwall when I was a kid, it's shit to realise that you'll probably never afford a house where you grew up. I had to move all the way up to the grim north, near Tiverton, but even round here prices are rocketing up even though there's not a lot of amenities or anything.
    If you get yourself out of the towns/villages, like up onto the moors or whatever, there are loads of places to park up over night.

But it seems to me (only really getting the horror of this in my 50s) that money truly is purpose on the planet. I'm all for kindness and alturism but if you don't earn you don't eat or have a place to sleep. It's all so horrible.

    So many of these coastal places are ghost towns in the winter (I've been to a few and, as you said, it's like 28 Days Later!) I'd like to see 2nd homes so heavily taxed that it dissuades people from having them (Ideally banned altogether until our awful housing situation is improved), and a ban on Air B&Bs. If houses aren;t first homes and occupied most of the time they need to be sold or run as proper B&Bs. I'm sick of the rich selfishly ruining towns because they want their own holiday homes.

    I live not too far from Budleigh and it is very nice and always feels quite genteel. But according to a few people I've talked to there, living there is not so great. A lot of people retire here but there isn't really a whole lot of community to it as people keep themselves to themselves it seems, or just within the community of incomers. But of course, as you well know it is arse-puckeringly expensive to live there.
