  • This morning I was rather rudely awakened by a very violent earthquake. Today I interviewed some local Taiwanese people about how they felt and if Taiwan is prepared for earthquakes.

I want to apologize to the elderly couple I interviewed in this video for the poor framing of the video. I'm using a new camera and I didn't notice the lens wasn't looking at them. They were such a kind and lovely couple and I also want to thank them for their time and their openness to speak to me. I'm rather introverted so approaching people like this was difficult for me; however, this couple made me feel very much at ease and they were amazing to talk to!

The first young man, you interviewed at 2:10, apparently never experienced catastrophic 921 earthquake, so he was seemingly just feeling fun. He didn't realise the deadly quake like today's one is a nightmare for all Taiwanese people. Anyone who had experienced 921 would never like this massive quake to hit Taiwan again. As well as that, today's quake was really reminiscent of 921 earthquake. Honestly, 921 heavily and completely destroyed many cities in Taiwan. Anyways, i don't think it was fun.
i know people in Taiwan are used to living with frequent seismic activities. That's part of our life. Having said that, it's still very scary when confronted with a devastating earthquake.

      There's a saying in Taiwan:
If it's a small earthquake, you don't have to run; if it's a big one, you can't run from it anyway.

Our education teaches us that we must remain calm when a situation occurs. Panic cannot help us assess the danger but might make things worse. During an earthquake, we always calm down and consider what we should do: stay or leave? If the situation is not serious, then we should just stay, avoiding panic and causing others to misjudge the situation.

    Awesome video!
The biggest earthquake I've ever felt was of this same size and it's the only earthquake that made me actually feel truly afraid. I stayed under my bed during it though and the only thing that happened to me was that my desk lamp feel and the lightbulb broke. I was only 50 miles (80.5 km) from the epicenter. We also had a 6.5 aftershock but it was several hours later. However, that one was closer to my house but it didn't really scare me because I figured it was an aftershock and probably wouldn't get as big as the first one.
It's not always wise to assume that the first earthquake that gets your attention is the biggest one though. The last noteworthy earthquake I was in was a 7.1 and it was preceded the day before by a 6.4. So when I first felt the 7.1, I stayed sitting at my desk because I thought, "Oh it's just an aftershock and it will be gone before I can do anything about it." But then it didn't go away and got bigger, so I took shelter. That earthquake shook for nearly two minutes where I was! It never shook all that hard because that one was more than 100 miles (161 km) away from me but it shook a long time because the epicenter was so far away and the waves tend to spread out. In any case, had it been a larger earthquake with a closer epicenter, it sure would have been a mistake not to take cover with the assumption that it's just an aftershock.

Prozzie thanks for this quick video. You were the source of some international news reference. However I want to remind you that this earthquake is magnitude 7.2. And the intensity scale depends on where you were at. The Chinese translation of magnitude(規模)and intensity(震度)scale are different.

Hey Prozzie - I’ve been following your channel for a few years. I’ve always loved your authenticity, your honesty, humour, insights and warmth. I just wanted to let you know that I’m so impressed that you’re taking the leap into becoming a full time You Tuber. That’s a huge accomplishment. I can see the extra time and effort you’re investing in your videos and learning more about your life in Taiwan along the way.
Today’s revelation was your fluency in Mandarin! Woah. I knew you spoke Mandarin, you’d have to after living in China and Taiwan for such a long time, but I’ve obviously missed previous episodes where you displayed your proficiency within an extended conversation with a local.
You and Allen have both kept my interest in Taiwan alive, and because of you both, I finally visited Taiwan a couple of months ago with my wife. Time was limited so we explored Taipei and Tainan, as well as Jiu Feng and the surrounding area. I thought that this would tick my “must visit Taiwan” box, but instead it just added fuel to my desire to explore ALL of Taiwan. Not only did I enjoy the areas I visited, but I absolutely fell in love with the Taiwanese. What beautiful, gentle, open hearted people (well, at least all those that I interacted with).
Righto, that’s all from me. Thanks for all the interesting, amusing and insightful content. I know I’m going to enjoy watching you and your channel grow from strength to strength.

We in the lower mainland of British Columbia can expect a major earthquake as high 9 magnitude at any time. We have been upgrading schools and bridges and other infrastructure for the big one. Everyone that lives in a earthquake zone should have an earthquake kit in there home that includes a transistor radio,flashlight,first-aid kit, medication, water and non-perishable food there’s a lot more things to many to list.

That was no good sign for me because I know normally taiwanese people will stay calm 😂...so I felt its a real serious situation.
