- DIY Portable Spot Welder for Lithium Batteries
In this DIY video, I will be assembling a portable spot welder in the mots budget friendly but safe manner. I will be using a Car Jump Starter battery pack with 1000A output rating. The spot welder kit is the cheapest but functional, with 5 power levels. I also use a voltmeter to monitor the battery voltage. I test the weld quality of my setup and found it to be satisfactory.

Recently ordered the 800A version of this Baseus jump starter and some EC5 connectors. Thank you for confirming this works! I was guessing it would, but it's good to know for certain!. Also my welder is max 16V and 900A so should be perfect at just under fully charged.. Anyone trying to use an old car battery (60Ah) may think there's something wrong with their welder, as mine would only weld up to 0.1mm. Turns out this battery is ready for recycling due to high internal resistance (50-60mOhm). I'm also, as you are, rebuilding an old ebike battery (Kalkhof) with new cells.
Yes you are right, internal resistance plays a major role in the welding current capability of the battery. All the best for your ebike battery build.
Very informative, thanks for posting.
They have battery spot welders on Amazon for between $45-75 already put together similar to this but it’s used for that purpose.
On my spot welder controller there is bodged reverse voltage protection diode. It probably acts to protect mosfets from back emf. So if you have a board like that - solder it to output + / - terminals (remember to pick correct orientation).
Great little project!
Good job, I purchase the complete kit, thanks
Good video thanks for sharing
great knowledge sharing..thanks
Nice
If the unit is off, do you still measure voltage across the output probes? Mine does and i think it might be broken. That seems unsafe.
Bro there is version 8 version 7 which board should i buy ?
Does anyone know what the key and led pin outs are for? this is one the v8 kit
How thick of a nickel strip can it weld?
how do you get around some jump starter don't allow current to flow until there is a small volt on the leads side (dead car battery side)?
Usually jump starters have a special power lead. Just don't use that.
Am surprised this spot welder and jumó starter manage to weld , I had few of this type spot welders and even using a powerful lipo battery or car battery it was still very weak , but I bought the BIRF brand and that one it’s very good spot welder I can weld even with a 1500 mah 3 cell lipo battery very good
The main advantage of the car starter that I use is that it has higher nominal voltage because of a 4S lipo configuration (4*3.7V). It also has very high amp capability. The higher voltage leads to higher current via the nickel strips and hence better welds. I haven't tried with 3S lipo or a car battery (12.8V), but those have lower nominal voltage. I think any spot welder kit can be used as long as it can support 4*4.2V max input and fairly large current. Thanks.
Where did u purchase the jump starter ?
It was from AliExpress, links in the video description. Thanks.
Is this still working?
10min of fun 1h charge and it costs a lot so yahhhh if u need to make lots and lots of packs u need car batterry
