The only reason for a diode in a dc circuit of this type would be to protect from any back emf generated by an inductor such as a relay coil but short circuiting a battery is definitely not recommended. That is a universal instruction that accompanies all batteries. An 18650 spot welder works on low voltage and high current usually by the discharge of a large value capacitor to give a short duration high current pulse.

    Appreciate the efforts but there are some disastrous design flaws which you can work upon. Sorry for being a critic, but this can get dangerous to viewers who may try to copy you.
    1. The SS nail literally melted. What are some better alternatives?
    2. Should've used proper battery connectors instead of directly soldering on the battery terminals. The battery material (chemicals) get damaged due to heat, thus reducing battery life.
    3. Diode alone is not sufficient for protection, how about adding a fuse of appropriate value?
    4. How about PWM switching control (using maybe MOSFETS) for variable output power control and efficiency. Also when it gets touched it should automatically disconnect after few milliseconds for a precise spot weld, after that even if it stays touched, it won't be connected.
    5. An assembly setup with a handle like how vertical drills work. If the two terminal probes touch each other by mistake, then it will blow.
    6. How about Using an 1:1 isolation transformer between battery and system?

      This switch can be a MOSFET, Relay or other any other electronic switching device suitable for this application.
      (Suitability depends on factors like maximum current rating, polarity, switching speed, triggering circuit specs, etc.)

    Hi
    Does it have to be 6A4 diode or any diodes ?

    • @joemann7971
      @joemann7971 2 роки тому +4

      I don't see the point of the diode. You could probably omit it. It does reduce the voltage a bit but you'd likely get stronger spot welds by removing the diode.

    • @simjang-9171
      @simjang-9171 2 роки тому +1

      Its for safety, because in theory works as current limiter. If I don't remember incorrectly 6A4 stands for 6 Amperes 400v. So actually, I would like to get one around 2 to 4 Amps max since this would reduce the chances of the battery exploding in my face.
      If u want to do this, make sure u put 2 diodes in series so if the first fails and short circuit, the second will buy u enough time to disconnected the terminals.
      Edit: No, losing 1v doesn't matters, if anything it will help u to avoid sparks when welding.

    • @joemann7971
      @joemann7971 2 роки тому

      @@simjang-9171 Diodes don't do any sort of currently limiting. The current you're mentioning is just the max those diodes can handle continuously before they burn. The main thing those diodes will do is provide a small voltage drop, which would reduce the current but its not current limiting by any means.
      The main reason for such diodes would be to prevent reverse current but you're dealing with a DC battery, not AC, so, diodes are unnecessary. Besides, you're building a spot welder. You want higher currents. If the current is too low, nothing will happen. So, why would you want to limit or reduce current? If its too powerful, just reduce the time the spot welder is on. Instead of 1 second, you do 0.75 seconds or 0.5 seconds. The less time the spot welder is on, the less likely you'll damage the cells, so you have nothing to lose by having a more powerful spot welder.
