Im going to explain it in a short way - As much MF as you can, without losing on kilspeed, is the correct answer. In first instance, game checks for: unique --> set --> rare --> and finally magic. On EACH stage, the whole MF is being checked, that means game check your MF 4 times - for unique, set, rare and magic quality. Furthermore, the best strategy for MF is to hunt champions / elite packs / superuniques in areas of lvl 82, 83, 84 ad 85 over and over again on players 1, because they will always drop 1-2 items, no matter what player count is. Thats why zerker barbs and sorcs are the best chars to MF, because they can stack over 700mf with good killspeed. There is also 2 very important factors - each item has its own rarity ( for example, tc87 items in higher lvl areas ( 82, 83, 84 and 85 ) such as archon staffs, sacred armos etc - they have a chance to drop from around 1:1k to 1:4k in MAGIC quality from elite monster) and UNIQUE quality of an item is the rarest, so most of the time its RNG and being lucky, but high MF always helps in a long run. I always enjoyed my MF barb. Just slap some good main dps weapons on him, and have him duel wield 2x baba with ist socketed. Grab some gear that has MF on it but doesnt nerf you too much. Then go on a trip around the world: Eldritch > Shenk > Pindleskin > Council > Countess. Not ideal for the greatest drops but they all have mobs around them with pretty good item drops, a load of gold drops too, and none of them are too difficult to kill (council being exception based on their auras). Not the most effective farming (I think I got around 300mf), but its fast, relatively safe, and very easy. Ideal to find some stuff for trading or to give to toons or friends.
You can actually open up your inventory then while you're dragging the item to put it into your inventory, the item is actually on your cursor, so you can exit a game with the item still on your cursor. When you join a new game, it will still be on your cursor and you'd be in town, so you can move it to stash then. Or just tp, then clear your inventory temporarily so you can pick stuff up. Makes much more sense to dedicate some space for picking stuff up though... Personally I'd go around with identifying scrolls, either in the belt, or a book of such scrolls. This way you can figure out if it's even worth the inventory space for an item. If not, simply drop it back on the ground and look at the next item.

"Optimal" according to what metrics? You want to have as much magic find as possible while still being able to clear enemies quickly without dying. You get quite a bit more set/unique drops going from 300 to 600 magic find. The idea is that you gain more magic find going from 0 to 250 than you do going from 250 to 500, so you get the biggest bang for your buck the first 2 or 3 hundred magic find. It's still optimal to juice the numbers up to 600 if it doesn't affect your clearing speed / survivability.
portal scrolls in the belt.... now it changes everything. When you put your portal on the last square, you are putting a safe to you come back town. nice, awesome.
Mercenaries cannot get to level 99 FYI. Also this is completely untested but if you got charms with poison damage can it get the killing blow on monsters? I know it cannot in PvP but I am not as versed in PvM. If it cant then you could get all 7% MF Small Charms with Poison damage and it would get the enemy to 1 health really quickly?
I need a little advice. I'm a returning player after a two year absence. I usually always play only as a Barbarian, sometimes summoning Necro. But this time I decided for my first time ever I would roll a Hammerdin. My question is, what gear is the best MF gear for an Act 2 Merc? Thank you
When doing an actual magic-find build, the main component is having a solid 300-600% magic find with fast clearing speed. It'll only slow you down to invest in magic find on your mercenary, waiting for him to last hit every monster. Keep in mind that mercenary magic find only comes into play if they get the last hit in which case the magic find used is the sum of theirs and yours. Otherwise, only your magic find is used. In the video, he invested so many resources into his mercenary, because he was trying to figure out the maximum magic find possible - not to be a useful magic find build.
Couldn't a barb merc have two 6 socket axes? Also I can't believe that you didn't use antidote potions. They don't just cure youthey also give 50 or 100% (can't remember how much off hand) resistance for a few minutes.
funny thing : I had some 100500 runs Andi NM for SoJ`s and with 400mf almost everytime she drop green rings, time to time x2 at same run. When I drop MF from 400 to ~220-250 - almost everytime she droped unique rings (from x20 only 1 was SoJ). conclusion: no reason in high MF for unique items. Biggest MF need for set items ps: ye ye, my english lvl suck
Diablo 2's loot really triggered that reward centre in the brain. JUST rare enough that you want to keep trying. Diablo 3 kind of made them drop too often I think.
The most hard-to-posses thing in this build is not even items, that were used, but having lvl 98-99 BARB (!), that have lvl 98-99 merc. Precisely 146+ str to carry eth monarch LOL
Damn I can't find any of my posts, my ebay profile no longer has the description, and my memory is shoddy - but this isn't the experience I recall with my MF Merc Barb. First of all, it was always the act II Merc (jab/Polearm) and killing stuff was not this difficult. I used it long before I was level 99. I don't see anything in this guide about using Necro wands to boost power and make the merc basically invincible (I guess it's totally different with a spellcaster). I am going to have to troll google until I can find my posts or gamefaqs on the matter because to disagree with my Mandalorian friend this is NOT the way. I played D2 for like... a decade. I didn't even know you could portal scroll in the belt...
@Eviscerate Been playing for 20 years, still didn't know lol.
portal scrolls in the belt.... now it changes everything.
When you put your portal on the last square, you are putting a safe to you come back town.
nice, awesome.
U can up the goldwrap to have additional pot spaces
was this done on 7 player game?
How likely is it that there are any uniques left you did not got after you got 20 ITH runes?
But can u kill andy with 1 skeleton
MUCH BETTER quality of D2 videos!
Lol this is Xtimus's alt
Did he say the merc must get the killing blow in order for the magic find to work?
In order for the merc MF to apply yes. The merc must get the last hit. The characters mf always applies.
nicely done Xtimus! Still going strong in 2019!
beside item drop, and magic find, there are also mod rolls. we notice these controllers variables back in old days and now they are all shown in poe
wait ..you use an act 2 merc?
Why u dont start play today pd2 season 2?
Mercenaries cannot get to level 99 FYI. Also this is completely untested but if you got charms with poison damage can it get the killing blow on monsters? I know it cannot in PvP but I am not as versed in PvM. If it cant then you could get all 7% MF Small Charms with Poison damage and it would get the enemy to 1 health really quickly?
Forgot about putting tps in belt. That’s such a good space saver
They wonder why people bot and buy items, ain't nobody got time for that.
@randomguy8196 what's an inventory hack? What would that have to do with this?
@randomguy8196 I wasnt even going to respond.. but I wanted to tell you "that's stupid!"
@randomguy8196 why would you play anywhere other than ladder, you loser...
So Xtimus I was wondering do you have any recommended ruin words for Amn ruins
spirit sheilds
@@nerdlord2288 tal thul ort amn
Magic find doesn’t affect rune dropping rate… did you find a single high rune?
How come the goldwrap wasn't upgraded??
Cant believe your not playing pd2. Literally star struck. Pd2 is everything we have been asking for and more.
Except for stable servers!!
whats pd2?
Wouldn’t you get more mf if you use act5 merc? Dual 6ist pb sword skullders and 110mf tiara of luck?
very cool. Was your andy glich bug'd ? EDIT: nvm I see she was not wen I see the stanima potion drop.
are the d2 servers still up?
not the ressurected one but i mean the og one
Yes Thousands of players still there
Nice 😄 next try to do same but with extra gold, must see how crazy stacks will drop 😄
Just found out that you have already done extra gold video, fun stuff
crispy fried onions how do I upgrade the belt ?
Roberto Nuno you need to find a specific rune and use the cube to upgrade it to its exceptional/elite version.
I used have a warcry gf baba and rip trav runs
Roberto Nuno Go to the website "ArreatSummit", bookmark that shit. Its the best informative D2 site out there I believe
So in other words, between 200 and 400 MF is more then enough?
Damn I want to get back into diablo 2 but I haven't played since 2003. I wouldn't know where to start.
i made tacos last night New ladder season just reset so everyone is starting fresh!
You have thorns damage affecting enemies when they hit you. There’s a chance you are getting the last hit FYI
450mf seems to be fine. RNG still reigns supreme.
I also was always running 400-450 MF, seems to be a good spot. But was nice to see 1700% MF as experiment.
Couldn't a barb merc have two 6 socket axes?
Also I can't believe that you didn't use antidote potions.
They don't just cure youthey also give 50 or 100% (can't remember how much off hand) resistance for a few minutes.
yes and it helps the effectiveness of all them health pots hes burning, even regular rejuv would be better
u forgot to switch weapons on mephs death
Assassin is like am I a joke to you. Because they can dual wield claws and Wrist blades and katar. And they can also be socketed.
Do the kill once, then just skip to the last second of a kill on the rest. This got boring to fast.
That's exactly the point, the video shows that this build is not viable and boring to play.
funny thing : I had some 100500 runs Andi NM for SoJ`s and with 400mf almost everytime she drop green rings, time to time x2 at same run. When I drop MF from 400 to ~220-250 - almost everytime she droped unique rings (from x20 only 1 was SoJ).
conclusion: no reason in high MF for unique items. Biggest MF need for set items
ps: ye ye, my english lvl suck
Thanks for the good info!
Nice drops, thank you for posting.
Yeah. Very nice drops 😂
Best game ever. I love maximising the possibilities of this game in a legit way.
yeee
Diablo 2's loot really triggered that reward centre in the brain. JUST rare enough that you want to keep trying. Diablo 3 kind of made them drop too often I think.
link to guide in description please. always link your sources.
The most hard-to-posses thing in this build is not even items, that were used, but having lvl 98-99 BARB (!), that have lvl 98-99 merc. Precisely 146+ str to carry eth monarch LOL
Do this on Path of Diablo, you can get way more of due to corrupting items to max sockets based on the base item type.
Path of Diablo is garbage now.
I played D2 for like... a decade.
All that aside - nice video :D Just passing by because I'm totally stoked for the remaster of D2 :D
This was an example of absolute max. Act3 merc holds a shield, so it gets more MF
how do you pick up items lol
You can potion your merc btw, there's also a hot key.
So... a video about using a hero editor, cool
And now whos experience curve from level 89 to 99
has grief and last wish weapons but doesnt up the belt for 16 pots?!?! however, TP scrolls in belt = mind blown.
oh you're running PlugY, that makes sense with the version number hadn't any letters
