Great content as usual! I've always felt like the sweet spot is around 250-300 mf. You can easily achieve that without severely compromising your dmg output and still do runs efficiently, and get a lot of good stuff. Getting too much mf beyond that point will only make your runs slower and the reward is definitely not worth it in terms of drops per minute.

Yeah, but once you have decent gear a sorceress can to get to 3-400 almost without trying it you got 3 piece tals so it for sure depends on your char/build/gear. But maybe I won’t feel “stressed” the next time my javazon only reaches 200 MF
Great video. I think you should also add the time it took to complete the 100 runs. Considering the drop off in dps for more MF, the time taken would put this video into more perspective, and show the efficiency with each gear set used. If the 500mf build took 50% longer than the 250mf build, but only returned 10% more finds..then obviously not as efficient. But if it only took 10% more time for those 10% more finds, then its actually just as efficient, and worth it, if your JUST grinding loot. The change from 100MF to 250MF resulted in a 25% increase in finds. That's probably the sweet spot right there
Absolutely! I agree that this would have made it even more useful, and the plan was to do this in the beginning. The problem is that I couldn’t put together any decently “realistic” gear set ups with the items I had saved on my mules. With the gear I used in this video, the only decrease in speed I really noticed was with the 500% mf, because that’s when I had to start sacrificing skills and fcr for more mf. I could potentially redo this experiment sometime, and then put more time and effort into planning and acquiring more gear
This is some good insight. 0% MF bad. The sweet spot for me would probably be around 200%, as you don't lose as much power. The quality of the items sure increased with the 500% but that would need testing, and the good items and rolls just happened to drop later.
150 and 200% would be interesting too to see when the diminishing returns really start to kick in to high gear. Although it seems to me that the higher mf build seems to find even rarer items more often. So maybe it is not all about quantity but also about rarity.
Ive been playing single player for over a year. Ive found just about everything including Stone of Jordan, Tyreals might, Griffons and a Zod rune. Ive found numerous spiderwebs. I havent however found a Shako (that wasnt etheral), a Hoz, maras or highlords.
@Purriah I farmed hell meph for months when I first started. I got everything else she can drop , ain't worth it for 1 item when there are alternatives.
It’s hard to compete with teleport so unless you have enigma the others struggle to keep up. But in single player with static maps, or for areas with less randomness in the map generation (CS, trav etc.) I think teleport is not as important if you really prefer other classes. I sometimes MF with sub-optimal characters because it’s fun.
One of my buds from mid/high school way back in the day use to run a bot online farming pindle and he always had crazy gear. No clue where he got the bot from or how it worked but more or less he told me he just runs it every night when he went to bed and school gets home from school and all he did was sort out the trash. After playing with him for a bit the game was kinda boring because there was nothing to really hunt for. But before playing with him I use to play so much, hunting gear and dueling people. it was most of what I did in grade 8, 9 and 10. When kids in class talked about d2 back then they say something like "Oh I play that game too" Id say something like "Yeah I made a new guy on Sunday and maybe after 3 hours hes level 75 and ready for dueling." and they just freak out like "WTF 75 in no time?"... Yeah you just rush with a friend and level in hell X what ever was meta at the time(it was cows back then). My other friend from high school that I played with use to help each other out. We farm, power lvl and what not, also duel. It was great. He had this barb that only had 5% small walk run speed charms in his bag... omg that guy was so fast. He could out run a sorc telein. This was a really long time ago when 5% faster walk/run use to exist but they took them out of the game because they where too strong :(
It's hard to put away your mf gear for faster clear speed. But faster clear speed leads to more find numbers faster in the long run. I think ~ %200 is easy to wear for a casual player and good enough unless you're trying to minmax your gear.
Nice analysis! I am lvl 79 sorceress and I was wondering if it is worth to jump from 120 MF to 250 MF but losing like 60 resistance everywhere. Now I know it's not worth the effort. Thanks a lot!
Very nice video... it is never worth it to sacrifice kill speed for more MF. Especially because MF only affects if the given base rolls magic/rare/set/unique. It does not affect what kind of base drops or rune drops. That's why doing more kills over given time is always more beneficial.
Thank you! Yes exactly. If you want to find a Griffon’s (like I do…), you have to find a lot of diadems and that requires a lot of drops. part of why I did this test was to convince myself to not sacrifice too much speed for high mf😅
Yea for that its probably best to just have Horker Barb and spam Pindleskin or Thresh Socket. Both being at about 1 : 25000 with ~350 MF. It can be done with budget gear with little issues.
So 100-150% MF and more is waste of time. Good to know. Thanks for your video. One question do you play mode "players 1" or "players 8" or something inbetween?
Bro... if you take the increase in rare items with 500... you had a rare ring in one frame and the increase in rare items is quite noticeable. When you farm other bosses, like pindle or a5 shenk and eldritch together with meteorb or light sorc... it gets wild ... the rings and coronets and tiaras
Afaik, the magic find only influences the items rarity, not the amount of items. Let's assume a mob will always drop 5 items. Your MF only determines what rarity those 5 will drop.
great video. i love this game. if they accept and make it like pd2 with corruptions definitely it will be best game.coruptions are so great. gives totally new to the game
I had someone get angry and start yelling at me when we had a discussion about this, I resolved it fairly quickly though. Challenged him to a 2 hour session. He could wear anything he wanted as long as it was parallel to his claims; which were... More mf = more items. (he doesn't know about the actual code/mechanics.) He took the challenge and we were off. He had 430 mf on his barb, which was a horker to boot. I had 123? I think. Might have been less. Each one of his pit runs took roughly (4:30) to complete. My runs took (1:22) almost every time, depending on location/density. In the end, I had 4 high runes. Vex, lo, sur, cham. Along with SKullders, vamp gaze, arac mesh, and maras. (best of the finds, pretty damn good) He had 1 mid rune (pul) arach mesh, and a eth ribcracker that rolled lowest % ha. You make the final verdict. My mindset has always been speed > MF. If you can't fly through the content, you might as well be in a game soaking exp at the same time via p3+
91 sorc 360mf still haven't found shako. I also have 75 summon Necro 120mf. No shako. 84 lvl smiter 20mf no shako too. Farming mephisto and occasionally terror zones with the sorc.
What is striking is that it seems to improve the Unique find more than the sets after 100% - but this could be just a consequence of a smaller sample of 100 runs?
Not sure! But one thing that struck me is how many more uniques than sets there are, so even if sets are a “more common” roll, a lot of items simply can’t roll as sets so I ended up finding fewer than I thought I would before doing the runs.
Never compromise your speed and killing ability for MF. It's more fun to move around quickly and kill stuff fast than to dedicate time to killing one monster over and over. Also, you get more chances are Runes popping from more kills.
To find good items is allwas a good feeling, my best finds finding spots are the forgotten tower, 3 yes 3 occus, 1 ber. Then CS there i found 3 yes also 3 spiderwebs, highlords and untill now my best find a Griffons eye. The shako i find 2 times here was diablo nice to me. And here was my mf very low under 100% but the kill speed and clearspeed was unmatched thankfull to the classic javazone with a eth titan 199 ED. The weapon rips everything appart. Sometimes it doesnt need that high of MF, when the kill/clearspeed is very propper.
Thank you for the content. I have a question. Is there any influence on the magic find from the Merc? If he gets the final blow does his magic find count over your? How does this work? Thank you!
Yes! If the merc gets the final blow, his AND your magic find added together is counted for the drop. But if you get the final blow the mercs MF does nothing for the drop.
Ok I agree. I was thinking mostly about end game when I made that comment so imo it’s not an exciting drop to find. But it sure is a good set, I use Angelic’s all the time. On melee characters the ring+amu combo is good to wear through the entire game
The way people call it "100 percent magic find", etc, make it hard to intuitively understand what it means. It's not "X% magic find", its "Chance to find a magic item is increased by X%" You have a base magic find, lets say, 1. When you have "0% MF", then your actual magic find is just that - 1. If you have 100% MF, then it means "chance to find a magic item is increased by 100%". In other words, your actual magic find chance is now 1 + 100% = 2. You are now twice as likely to find a magic item. And so on. 500%? 5 times as likely. 20%? 0.2 times more likely than with 0%.
When are we going to see that Uber run using all the keys you collected? Also, another commenter mentioned in a previous video that the true best MF/rune spot is a room of unique skeletons on the way to Nilathak or something? Would love to see if he was right by testing 1000 runs there.
Sorry to disappoint you but I did the Uber runs with those keys already, and it was a big mess and I didn’t like the way it played out so I scrapped the recording and never made a video out of it. I want to make a “torch from scratch”-video though so hopefully in the future. The only comment that comes to mind was a guy who did pindle runs and then ran all the way to Nihlatak, killing my all monsters on the way and finding some good runes. I am not a big fan of the halls so it’s not something I’m looking to do at the moment. More 1000 run vids on the way though. Thanks for the input 🙂
When I find rare uniques that are great like shanks on sp, I compare it with the others I have and then keep the better roll. Once I have 3 perfects I pick up, Id and drop it.
That's reasonable. Even 3 is more than you should really ever need in SP. Though it is nice to not have to "look" for your shakos on you other characters when you need them :)
it doubles the characters defense but it's a pretty worthless item unless you find it ethereal. and then it's only really useful on shifter druids cause they can zod it and up it to a stalagmite which will reduce the weapon speed but increase damage. this drawback is somewhat compensated by the form. in this rare build and case it's a bloody good item really but as said it needs to be ethereal.
I used to be in an Xbox d2 group, but I got into it with the guy that ran the group because he was convinced that having magic find was a complete waste of time.. he was 100% clear speed and couldn’t understand that there was a balance. He would only use mf if it was already part of the best in slot item. I was trying to give him the most leeway in the world.. agreeing there are diminishing returns.. agreeing his setup was great for runes. But he just couldn’t accept that having a gheeds was ever worth it.. he needed his 9x cold skillers that were each bringing up his damage by 2% 🙄
just a note that this also semi proves is 0mf = more runes. most the 0mf run that got a good drop also had runes no mf runs had rune drops (from what we saw)
you said you done these tests in single player, i am a relative newb to d2r, can i still craft runewords like enigma while playing singleplayer? because i mostly only have time while at work to game (yes homer simpson job) and if i have to go afk it would be so much better to just pause
@@zarfen for that you should consider that if you are not in a real players 8 party that there is really no difference between p7 and p8. also is having 7 players idle in town but farming alone (which IS playing p8) the same as farming with 4 buddies that are near you. also do bosses like meph have a rather small chance of no drops (which is the whole point of running higher player counts - reducing the no drop chance). the more players in a game the lower the chance to drop nothing on a kill. but that only affects white monsters and some bosses but less so. uniques, superuniques and champs have a 0% chance to drop nothing anyways. that's why there isn't really much point in running anything but p1 for stuff like pindle because champs will ALWAYS drop 2 pots and an item that is either magic or higher OR a larger sum of gold and uniques will ALWAYS drop 4 pots and an item magic or higher. superuniques will always drop 2 items and i forgot if 4 or 5 pots. so if you target boss groups in pits or something p1 is the way to go. if you run bosses it depends on the boss but p3 is mostly the best. if you run and kill everything like in cows p8 makes sense for real people farm groups. if you are farming solo then as said p7 and p8 are identical in terms of drops but p8 gives a little more exp. the chance of no drops only changes on odd numbers so p1+2 are the same chance, p3+4 are the same, etc. for bosses on p7+ you will always get andy or duriel drops p5+ you will always get meph, dia or baal drops. but as said between p3 and p5 the difference in drops is only marginal.
One little question... Why do you use the scrolls of identify instead of Deckard Cain?? Is it better to identify yourself if you have good magic find equipped??
It’s a habit I’ve built from thousands of mf runs where I don’t bother going to cain. I definitely should for challenge runs but I forget/don’t bother. No advantage to using scrolls at all
I swear I've done 2k runs on my solo sorc and I've yet to find; shako, (non-eth) viper :(, arachnid, occy, travs. I did find my first ever self found soj and I lucked out and was actually able to defeat Diablo with my somewhat budget smiter (he's got a perfect HoZ, but rolling with an atlantean and treachery) I did manage to find a near perfect eschutas, which will be cool when I'm able to take full advantage of it (res pretty bad & don't have infinity)
The drop rate is one of the things I hate most about D2R. I almost *never* find anything good, or if it's ok then it's not for my character's class. I've literally NEVER found a rune above Ko, and only saw that drop ONCE. I reached Travincal on Hell difficulty with my Fury druid but had to give up playing legit as the council were just unbeatable. They'd kill my merc, heal them themselves constantly and were so fast I couldn't kite them away from one another... absolutely impossible without the god gear I cheated to build using hacked save files. I now use Breath of the Dying and Chains of Honour, with a number of L20 paladin aura charms. The fact that the Worldstone Keep and Baal's minions were STILL a challenge for my hacked build proved to me that I never could have beaten the game legitimately, the amount of enemies and damage dealt was just insane. It took me, my merc and all my summons TEN MINUTES to hack through a physically immune Lister the Tormentor, and of course, I got diddly squat in loot from killing Baal. D2R's difficulty curve is analogous to the dating market as you age... it starts out easy and fun, you hold out for something good, then by the time you've been playing the game for hundreds of hours you realise it's fundamentally unwinnable and you either have to quit it or cheat, then quit anyway.
so for ladder starter. just hit 100 MF by any mean nesscrary , then you can slowly improve to 200-250% MF and chill at that? 250 MF doesn't seem like a big improvement to 100 MF tho like less than 30% for that many extra item slots used for more MF instead of kill speed?
If my calculations are right, there are a few mf points you may safe for other stats, but in general it doesn´t make much sense to max out magic find or waste to much time into calculations, if you just want to have fun. If you would like to go all in - it would be important to find the best mathematician around who would just write down your findings and starting to do crazy calculations on runspeed & turnover. Every time you basically change one single item of your equipment your performance is influenced. So, if you want to MF start with the angelic set, Tal Rashas, but try never lose too much damage output.
That was the plan at first, but I didn’t have the gear to make it “realistic”. For example, 0%mf setup had lower damage than the 100%mf setup because I don’t have a good sorc weapon without mf like deaths fathom or Hoto. But I agree it would have added good info to the tests!
The graph does look very much like the one you can find for Effective MF, meaning the more MF you have the less overall drops are affected, but also the more uniques you get proportionate to set items. But yeah, more than 300 MF usually weakens the build and is not that productive.
Yes, and my expectation for the experiment was that the results should look like that graph, but part of why I did this was just to confirm it for myself.
Does MF affect the quality of drops? Not the rng rolls, but like are unique drops more likely to be rarer uniques with more MF? Or does it just affect amount of drops being uniques
I dont why this format of video is so damn entertaining...I watch every one of them. I barley even play D2. I guess I played it enough to understand how good some drops are.

Thank you! Glad you liked it
Looks like it's still true that 200-300 is the best balance of kills speed and MF
I wonder if this % of unique/set drops is similar in Normal and Nightmare, as well? Very informative view! Just what I was needing btw. Thanks!
Thanks for this video, very insightful and a great resource!
Thanks, I’m glad you find it useful
This is some good insight. 0% MF bad. The sweet spot for me would probably be around 200%, as you don't lose as much power. The quality of the items sure increased with the 500% but that would need testing, and the good items and rolls just happened to drop later.
Thanks for the work man!
150 and 200% would be interesting too to see when the diminishing returns really start to kick in to high gear.
Although it seems to me that the higher mf build seems to find even rarer items more often. So maybe it is not all about quantity but also about rarity.
Because of you, i re-installed RD2......thank you
I wish you good loot luck!
It's interesting how the set items seemed to cap out earlier.
Thank you for posting this!
My pleasure! 🫡
Ive been playing single player for over a year. Ive found just about everything including Stone of Jordan, Tyreals might, Griffons and a Zod rune. Ive found numerous spiderwebs.
I havent however found a Shako (that wasnt etheral), a Hoz, maras or highlords.
Not finding shako or highlords but all that other stuff is CRAZY 🤯
D2 rng is truly rng
Aim for lower level areas if you want HoZ. Hell Mephisto is the guy for the level 42 class uniques
@Purriah I farmed hell meph for months when I first started. I got everything else she can drop , ain't worth it for 1 item when there are alternatives.
Great video as always! Is there any characters that can run farming like this other than sorceress? Seems like only sorc the best.
@@zarfenThanks for your quick reply! You're awesome!
Part of why I wanted to make this vid/test was just to convince myself to not chase higher and higher mf% too hard at the cost of speed
0% = 2:13
100% = 4:18
250% = 6:41
500% = 9:21
Farming Inside Mephisto's $49 Million Mansion
Nice analysis! I am lvl 79 sorceress and I was wondering if it is worth to jump from 120 MF to 250 MF but losing like 60 resistance everywhere. Now I know it's not worth the effort. Thanks a lot!
shako and a few others are satisfying to find for me even when i play solo
A wise man once said (Regular Schmuck) You can never have enough GREEN HATS.
Great video! What players count did you kill Meph on please?
Thanks!
Default/Players 1 for all runs in the video
Do you believe that the magic finding also upgrade the quality of the drops? I had an impression that the quality was far better in the last round...
So 100-150% MF and more is waste of time. Good to know. Thanks for your video.
One question do you play mode "players 1" or "players 8" or something inbetween?
Do you mind doing a video on these MF numbers doing full clears of durance/mephisto? Chests, Breakables, Council, etc?
Bro... if you take the increase in rare items with 500... you had a rare ring in one frame and the increase in rare items is quite noticeable.
Yes, that is correct!
great video. i love this game. if they accept and make it like pd2 with corruptions definitely it will be best game.coruptions are so great. gives totally new to the game
Thanks! 🙂
I have played pd2 for a season some years ago and I agree that the corruption mechanic adds a lot to the magic find end game.
@@zarfen also more variations on builds,more socets,splash dmg .
I had someone get angry and start yelling at me when we had a discussion about this, I resolved it fairly quickly though.
Challenged him to a 2 hour session. He could wear anything he wanted as long as it was parallel to his claims; which were...
More mf = more items. (he doesn't know about the actual code/mechanics.)
He took the challenge and we were off.
(best of the finds, pretty damn good)
He had 1 mid rune (pul) arach mesh, and a eth ribcracker that rolled lowest % ha.
You make the final verdict.
My mindset has always been speed > MF.
If you can't fly through the content, you might as well be in a game soaking exp at the same time via p3+
if your merc gets the kill , its basically +25% magic find from Insight
some of tose runs are +25%
with 100% is sometimes 125% etc
I just now noticed you skipped a Spirit Shroud.
Really good starter armor. Especially given to twink nova sorcs imho.
Never compromise your speed and killing ability for MF. It's more fun to move around quickly and kill stuff fast than to dedicate time to killing one monster over and over. Also, you get more chances are Runes popping from more kills.
I think it’s fun to find and identify items, so I would say it depends on how you like to play the game 🙂
But if you get the final blow the mercs MF does nothing for the drop.
very helpful & informative video
And then there is me finding 4 pincers in a row yesterday
You found more with 0 MF in 100 runs then I find with 300 MF in 300 runs 😂
what would you do with that ribcracker?
after hiting 200% focus on faster clears and survivability but you can still stack those 7mf small charms
Thank you. This helped me a lot.
"no good set amulets" angelic rings, amulet, and body armour is fucking amazing for levelling new toons.
It's not "X% magic find", its "Chance to find a magic item is increased by X%"
You have a base magic find, lets say, 1.
Very interesting video, thank you.
Nice Video Buddy...thx for sharing
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it
2:28: Mizan "Potion, please?" lol
On Ribcracker, does the 100% enhanced defense mean it doubles the Ribcracker's defense to 200? Or does it double your entire character's defense?
it doubles the characters defense but it's a pretty worthless item unless you find it ethereal. and then it's only really useful on shifter druids cause they can zod it and up it to a stalagmite which will reduce the weapon speed but increase damage. this drawback is somewhat compensated by the form. in this rare build and case it's a bloody good item really but as said it needs to be ethereal.
This is not true. If a rune drops or not is decided before mf is taken into account.
Good job mate 😊
gave you a like to keep mephisto happy :D
Mephisto thanks you for your offering! 😁
Excelent analysis
Thank you, glad you found it useful!
Nicely made video
From my experience without counting anything above 200% MF does very little so I try to keep it around there.
you said you done these tests in single player, i am a relative newb to d2r, can i still craft runewords like enigma while playing singleplayer? because i mostly only have time while at work to game (yes homer simpson job) and if i have to go afk it would be so much better to just pause
It'd be interesting to take these same builds now, and compare their performance in different player counts. Would be pretty simple to do in SP.
I probably wouldn’t do all of them, but a players 1 vs players 8 video is on my to do list :)
@@zarfen for that you should consider that if you are not in a real players 8 party that there is really no difference between p7 and p8. also is having 7 players idle in town but farming alone (which IS playing p8) the same as farming with 4 buddies that are near you. also do bosses like meph have a rather small chance of no drops (which is the whole point of running higher player counts - reducing the no drop chance). the more players in a game the lower the chance to drop nothing on a kill. but that only affects white monsters and some bosses but less so. uniques, superuniques and champs have a 0% chance to drop nothing anyways. that's why there isn't really much point in running anything but p1 for stuff like pindle because champs will ALWAYS drop 2 pots and an item that is either magic or higher OR a larger sum of gold and uniques will ALWAYS drop 4 pots and an item magic or higher. superuniques will always drop 2 items and i forgot if 4 or 5 pots. so if you target boss groups in pits or something p1 is the way to go. if you run bosses it depends on the boss but p3 is mostly the best. if you run and kill everything like in cows p8 makes sense for real people farm groups. if you are farming solo then as said p7 and p8 are identical in terms of drops but p8 gives a little more exp. the chance of no drops only changes on odd numbers so p1+2 are the same chance, p3+4 are the same, etc.
for bosses on p7+ you will always get andy or duriel drops
p5+ you will always get meph, dia or baal drops. but as said between p3 and p5 the difference in drops is only marginal.
Interesting how little magic find actually helps set items due to the number of failed set items.
No advantage to using scrolls at all
@@zarfen thank you!! Now that I have you here... Any tips for a hardcore sorcerer to grind fast but without dying?
@@danielcebriancalvo1045 Sorry, I'm the wrong person to ask for that! 😅
I swear I've done 2k runs on my solo sorc and I've yet to find; shako, (non-eth) viper :(, arachnid, occy, travs.
I did find my first ever self found soj and I lucked out and was actually able to defeat Diablo with my somewhat budget smiter (he's got a perfect HoZ, but rolling with an atlantean and treachery)
I did manage to find a near perfect eschutas, which will be cool when I'm able to take full advantage of it (res pretty bad & don't have infinity)
I kinda seems like the quality of uniques and sets gets better, not just the quantity. Is that what you thought?
Doubt the arachnid mesh falls without 500%mf.....
so for ladder starter. just hit 100 MF by any mean nesscrary , then you can slowly improve to 200-250% MF and chill at that?
Would be cool to see how long the runs took (on average) as a result of decreasing kill power too.
That was the plan at first, but I didn’t have the gear to make it “realistic”. For example, 0%mf setup had lower damage than the 100%mf setup because I don’t have a good sorc weapon without mf like deaths fathom or Hoto.
But I agree it would have added good info to the tests!
@@zarfen fair, but even a spirit and FCR rings would've been better than suicide branch lol
@WooliteMammoth haha yeah, I could have done much better with some more planning. I wasn’t even wearing any rings for the first 100 runs 😁
250-350 is my usual go-to.
The graph does look very much like the one you can find for Effective MF, meaning the more MF you have the less overall drops are affected, but also the more uniques you get proportionate to set items. But yeah, more than 300 MF usually weakens the build and is not that productive.
Yes, and my expectation for the experiment was that the results should look like that graph, but part of why I did this was just to confirm it for myself.
its probably most efficient to run between 100%and 250% magic find
It depends so much on what gear you have to choose from but I think around 250 is a good and relatively easy target for most characters
Does MF affect the quality of drops? Not the rng rolls, but like are unique drops more likely to be rarer uniques with more MF? Or does it just affect amount of drops being uniques
No, just increases the chance that the items that drop are unique
@@zarfen interesting! good to know! Great channel/videos BTW
am curious what is the return in item quality vs magic find from these runs. quantity is nice but quality is better !
Magic find does not influence what kind of items that drop, only makes them more likely to be magic, rare, set, and unique.
300-350 MF is sweet spot for many years experinece.
