As this railway was being built, the track laying crews crafted slide boards known as “devil’s shingles”, with room enough for one man and his tools. A walk down the mountain that could take hours in the infamously horrific weather took mere minutes. The first alpine railroad, and the first alpine slide!
That's the funkiest locomotive I've ever seen, I love it! It looks quite ancient, and it's a long slide down the mountain if a shaft key strips, although possibly there is a way to brake without the gearwheels.
There are brakes on the car gearwheels. The car has separate brakes. It is only pushed by the engine and not connected to it. The diesels are quite impressive as well. They were built by the railroad shop mechanics. One of the reasons for diesel is it costs $300 for the coal to get to the top of the mountain and only $30 for Diesel fuel.
Go to Jenbach in the Austrian Tyrol. The Achenseebahn is still 100% veteran steam rack locomotive operated. Also a very scenic ride plus you can usually see the scenery.
Most people don’t realize that Mt Washington has some of the worst weather in the US... Highest wind wind was recorded in the 1930s until it recently lost that title.. The Auto road, I went up in July once.. It was in the 90s at the bottom.. Could only go up 80% of the way as a blizzard was raging at the top..
I went in July too. It is super windy up there. And it got so foggy that we could not go to the summit. It’s scary, road is so narrow, so close the the edge...scarier if can’t see.
there is only 2 trains that this one that make the trip. One at 830 in morning and 3 in afternoon. Be prepared to cash out a lot of money...round trip PER adult is $90.00
Its 75 and 53 for kids and trains run all day try to get there around 9 pr 10am the latest. Do go before may. Watch the weather. Its an amazing experience. Was there yesterday
I rode the cog railway at least twice when I went to summer camp in New Hampshire (five years, 1960,61,62,63, and 65). I enjoyed it because I liked Mountain climbing. I a;lso climbed Mt. Washington at least twice, too.
We were just there 2 weeks ago. Went to look at the leafs. Only went to the half way point at the water tower. 3000 odd feet. Still the view was beautiful. Going back in the summer. If you love trains this should be on your list.
We’re very proud of our Cog Railway. They have since produced a series of diesel hydraulic locos entirely made on site using John Deere power plants. They do still run steam once a day I believe. The first train. If you’ve not visited NH to see the Cog you really need to. John. Chichester NH.
I have gone up the Cog Railway severL times. It it so cool that they still keep the old girls running. They even used to get them fixed at H.K. Porter plant in Boston. H.K. porter used to make Train engines all the way up to the 1950s! My dad used to work at H.K.Porter.
I grew up nearby in Vermont, so I remember riding this as a kid. Neat rail. Frankly, I think Mt. Washington is more fun to hike (climb) but the railway is a cool engineering feat. Also, for people who like this sort of stuff, the ultimate mountain cog rail that I've been on is the on that climbs the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. That is an amazing train.
This ride is so amazing but scary. Can be lovely day at bottom and raining at top. We had good trip up. Walked around for about 10 minutes and out of no where ... the rains came down, and I mean came down! Everyone soaked and cold as breeze were more like take force winds! Kids crying, fussing and laying on floor as train slid on rails in a few parts... I was fearful and hung on for dear life!
I have been to the Summit twice on the Cog, once in the train and once there was a group of us who actually walked up and down tie after tie after tie. It's quite the deal on the train, but you appreciate it even more on foot. They had closed early that year (early 60s) because it was so dry and way to much fire hazard because of the sparks that can fly out with the smoke!
I like mountain railways or cog railways if you want to say it like that but I’d prefer the snowdon mountain railway because of the engines are so unique because the cylinders are back to front and surprisingly the culdee fell mountain railway in the Railway Series is based on the snowdon mountain railway
I rode that cog in 1974. It went to the Matterhorn mountain in Zermatt. I was reading Les Miserable on the way up and started crying. That story still has a powerful effect on me.
Not always the case! But it is good advice to be prepared for cold windy weather at the Summit. On a clear day up there you can see 5 states and Canada, and wish you hadn't brought a coat along!
AWESOME!! seeing this very old technology still in operation brings tears of joy to my eyes! wish I had a time machine to go back to the age of steam an coal powered behemoths

+Rob Dickinson Well, I aim at the quality of your Java Clips. Enjoy the Penang hikes, no steam train but the weather is much more pleasant than at Mt Washington!
Today in 2018, there is only one steam operated locomotive left, the others are biofuels, and cost to ride up mountain are as steep as mountain itself $ 65.00 dollars, just a tad much for a vacation budget.
The Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad in Washington state has 10 GEARED locomotives. You can see their beautiful newly restored ALCO #17 on my channel. Additionally, it's only $32 for a round trip ticket in first class, and they'll feed you, too. It's really quite a fun trip!
Last rode this rail in 1969. Looks like they no longer stop half way up to add more water. Is it that they just did not show that or, is it no longer needed? Just curious. Definitely worth the trip if in the area.

Damn shame! Should be 100% steam. ( burn propane). After the Old Man fell, the Cog is the last remaining state symbol. Don't let the climate change Nazis run the show. Kick UNH out!!
To all of you who say this ride is ‘bad for the environment’ and ‘polluting’ most of these emissions are ash and steam. The ash does little to nothing to the environment, as ash is actually a great fertilizer. Now modern engines produce more ‘greenhouse’ gasses, more than this tiny little engine.
The engine pushes the passenger car up the mountain and there is actually no physical connection at all. On the way down the mountain the car sometimes isn’t even touching the engine as the brakeman uses the car brakes to keep the car speed in check.
So it wont explode, and could go up those grades, a regular engine cant do that! Not even a advance locomotive, only engines with the ability to use the rack rail is able too. And a regular steam engine with a normal position would make the water expose some fire tubes, heating the boiler and eventually, exploding! And no one wants that! So its boiler is angled so that the water is still level. (The comment above already said it, but im going into more detail)

For how long a period of months has this line been knocked out of line’ It seems very precarious
It still runs. WOW. It outlasted my parents. My parents were on there honeymoon and went on this thing a zillion years ago.

Yes, indeed! That railway might be a candidate for UN world heritage.
Always wanted to see those in action, thanks. Saw lots of pictures of them over the years!

Fantastic. I have never seen before this type of small steam engine, from India.
My late grandfather took me there in the early 2000s when one of our summer trips to New Hampshire. We also visited the Conway Scenic Railroad.
I’ve never seen this type of locomotive before. Very unique looking!
Unique to this railroad.
The original hybrid vehicles are still running today. Steam will always be the driving force that powers the planet.

On the day we were there the summit was above the clouds, it was beautiful.
Mount Washington Cog Railway, amazing footage :)
Live in NH and I’ve climbed Tuckermans to the top but never rode the cog.

Why are the trains designed like that? Why is it Face down and the coupling rods are in the front?
The engine pushes the passenger car up the mountain and there is actually no physical connection at all. On the way down the mountain the car sometimes isn’t even touching the engine as the brakeman uses the car brakes to keep the car speed in check.
The boiler design is to keep the water completely over the boiler tubes. Preventing overheating, melting and then an explosion of the engine.
So it wont explode, and could go up those grades, a regular engine cant do that! Not even a advance locomotive, only engines with the ability to use the rack rail is able too.
