so, as much as i really like modern metroidvanias, this one included, something i feel like i have realized after having played a ton of them is that they focus a lot more on frantic combat and a lot less on the puzzle bosses that ive always enjoyed. Bosses like Draygon, who can be defeated normally but are a bit tricky. Arachnus from metroid 2 and fusion, who can only be damaged in certain ways, or basically ALL of the Prime 1 and 2 boss fights. they are bosses that are solved like puzzles. Its not just "learn the patterns, dont get hit." After your first playthrough it becomes "I know the trick now, lemme absolutely obliterate this boss."This also applies to just, generic enemies often taking a large number of hits to actually kill. In metroid, by the time monsters come around that take more than 1 shot, you get an answer almost immediately. Missiles, Ice beam/Ice missiles, charge beam, plasma beam, etc. The difficulty isnt in the enemies have varied and powerful attacks, but that the sheer number of them and their minorly inconvenient placing for platforming will slowly whittle samus down over the course of her exploration, making every room more nerve wracking than the last as you enter with less health, less missiles, and less options. This comes to a head when you reach a boss room. If you dont have a guide, you can *easily* wander into smaller boss rooms without full energy on a first playthrough, meaning your low on resources and the boss is a brutal fight if you want to beat it this try, but never impossible. Lots of newer metroidvanias approach enemies much more like souls games, they have larger health pools and more varied attack patterns, using them less as a challenge for platforming and more as a challenge of your ability to use the combat system. Bosses are slugfests and dont really ask the player to use many of they tools that they have accumulated throughout a run. This isnt necessarily a bad thing, but I do really want to see more games look at what makes a lot of metroid bosses fun, that being the mechanics unique to the boss and its environment, Unique and puzzle like designs that cant simply be approached with brute force, and enemies that dont ask much from the player in terms of skill, but to approach a situation with a keen eye, and to wait for the right time. Combat focused games arent bad, but i think the genre is becoming far too consolidated on that style. And this is also present in Castlevania, originally an action platformer series, even the titular Symphony of the night uses enemies as a platforming or traversal puzzle that players must solve using their ever growing suite of abilities. Am i the only one that feels like this aspect seems to have been slowly forgotten?

Metro/castlemania? You know we already have a way of combining those two right? For one, it's -vania not -mania at the end of Castlevania. As for the word you're looking for, they're called Metroidvanias as a portmanteau of the two games that popularized the genre. Some have started calling them search action games even though that sounds lame and exploraction as a portmanteau of exploration and action is right there.
