I've finally been able to ramp up my modelling a little bit. Got two videos done, and I'm finally building models more frequently and at large numbers than before. Anyway, Airfix's Tomahawk was a pretty fun build. It didn't have too many parts, and with the exception of two areas, I didn't have any fit issues. Combine that with an interesting scheme- you don't usually see P-40's modeled as Tomahawk II's, and especially not in North African colors- and it's a pretty big win.

Great job. I have built two of these with a third one to go. I did a flying tigers, a soviet lend lease, And I was going to do another lend lease but seeing how good yours is, I might build it as the supplied RAF variant. It looks great.

Dont Be too hard on yourself about the shortcomings,there is no such thing as a perfect build or a perfect kit ,been building for 30+ years and i can tell you this from lots of triumphs and tragedies. keep building.

Very nice model W.A.! Zinc chromate is the way to go for wheel wells, Tamiya xf-71 or testors acryl work nicely, I prefer testors over Tamiya for U.S. planes as some bottles of xf-71 say ija interior. Canvas insides of the wells you can get away with khaki or a buff color.

Nice job, maybe one piece of advice - heavy weathering on the propeller is on the rear side - toward the canopy. Look at some images.

You've got to be extremely careful with copyright. A friend of mine lost his channel{ChrisandAlexmodeling} because someone complained about copyright over the sound of a Merlin engine. Lost all vids, ALL VIDS including those complained about. The sponge effect! One of the oldest modeling tricks, always works. I do like the P-40, Airfix, so-so. 1/72 I don't build because I have so much room. Good job on the model.

Hello! I like your build! What kind of Tamiya clear did you use? X-22 or X-35?
22 for paint, matte for final.
Randomly coming across, nice build, perhaps a little more chipping it could have possibly stand - using light grey pastel on walkways, on the cowling, gun access panels...

Out of curiosity, for the best results with the decals, do you recommend Micro Sol or Micro Set first?
The correct order of application is Microset, decal, Microsol. Microset is basically an adhesive- once it dries, it holds the decal tighter to the surface. MicroSol is a solvent- it 'melts' decals, allowing them to be pulled around bends and into corners. You MIGHT get the melting effect by going with Sol first, but placing microset on top of a decal shouldn't do much.

Nice build you did. Have you ever wanted to try some of the detailing photo etch kits? They often have seatbelts, a super detailed instrument panel, flap options, ordinance and stuff like that. LOVE doing that on my kits and you might enjoy it too. Sorry to hear about the copyright strike. Sadly corporations are too greedy and completely missed the fact that playing some of their music in an appropriate vid like yours might generate sales for them. Not many people your age know about Goodwin's "Battle Of Britain" soundtrack. It's awesome and fit great for your vid. Not your fault that they are so short sighted. Keep up the good work m8.
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve have used and am using PR- I’ve got mixed opinions on it. Brass I actually quite like. That silver stuff DML uses is the devil. The reason I don’t build with it more is purely money. I’ll drop some cash for jr in 32nd projects, or maybe large 48, but I just can’t afford to spend the cost of another kit on accessories for a he first right now. What I have been doing more is buying kits that come with PE- accurate miniatures, DML, etc
To follow up, I don’t think I have the patience for protection at 72nd scale lol

Generally i gloss with tamiya clear and flat with tamiya flat clear; but k dont recommend it. I havent found a flat i like, but have heard good things about armypainter. Tamiya gloss is okay but tricky, experiment on scraps till you find the right pressure/consistancy

I'm obsessed with 1/72 ww2 aircraft models. Would love to learn build them this nice. Though seems like a bit expensive hobby..
If you want to get serious about it, it can be. If you just want to give it a shot, it won't cost TOO much. If you've never done it before, this would be my shopping list- Airfix Fw 190 A-8 Starter Set- $13. A fatter brush- $1.5 A set of two sided emery boards, for sanding- $5 Hobby Knife- Exacto knife- $3-$5. WHITE GLUE- basically mandatory. Don't know how much it is, but odds are good that you've got some lying around somewhere. As an option, I would get a can of Tamiya Flat Clear-$8. It's not required, but it helps to seal the decals. So you can get into it, and give it a good try, for about $25 bucks, maybe $30 if you get the clear coat.
Either way, you should immediately watch all of Quick Kits Videos, especially the one about how to paint with brushes.

It works pretty well, and t let’s you get some good ‘folds’. Keep in mind the scale thickness though- for 72nd I use a normal piece of tape, but in 48th I put two pieces on top of each other and then cut from that.

Lightly dampened paper towel with water. Flory wash is clay based, so water is all you need.

Lacquer thinner? looks good but wondered why you would thin Tamiya acrylic paints with lacquer thinner? Any advantage over acrylic thinner??
It's not generic lacquer thinner, it's Tamiya brand thinner. It works about the same with their acrylics. I don't have a real reason to use it other than a guy at my model club told me it worked better, it cost the same, and I can use it to thin and clean my airbrush for Alclad work. I haven't used it enough to decide it has any real advantage or not.
Lacquer thinner is all I use with Tamiya paints, works great and is a whole lot cheaper than Tamiya thinner.
What did you use on the exhausts\burn on the fuselage?

How did you masked the model so well?
With these small-scale models with these sorts of curves, and really any 1/72 surface that is anything other than relatively straight and equal lines, my go-to is Silly Putty, and I do it mostly by eye. I have been having problems with silly putty for a while now, though, strange interactions between the residue and the paint. I've heard good thing about blue tack. For larger scale aircraft that require soft edges, I would like blue tack rolled. Currently though I draw and cut an appropriate pattern on a piece of printer paper, and then I tape it onto the model only by edges that will not touch paint- for example at the wing, I tape each piece of tape once at the leading edge and once at the root. This loose seal, as long as you aren't dumping paint, allows paint to feather around the edge instead of producing a hard edge like tape would. If I WANT a hard edge, I usually just apply tape around the general correct parting line, mark out the shape I want with pencil, mark any distinguishing panels on a part that won't be discarded, take tape off, cut smoothly with an exacto knife, then reapply to the model.

@The WaggishAmerican - the traditional Japanese music for your (1/48?) build was sublime and I could barely hear it. I loathe most marches so had to replace your audio for the P-40 with Eno or something. The P-40 was protecting folk before America entered WW11 and Chinese music would serve as well or even U.S. swing classics. Aloha. Tora.
I've always been a fan of the marches, but I'll try to take that into consideration. Any suggestions for non-marches that would work well with British subjects? I try to pick the music based on the operating country more so than the specific subject.

If you never listen to any recommendation again please please please I'm begging you to explore the breathtaking universe of Brian Eno from his Ambient 1 - 4 (four early albums) to My Life in the Bush of Ghosts to Apollo to Shutov Assembly to any collaboration with Harold Budd and the 39 other albums he has produced in the last forty years - it is literally the most beautiful (and melancholy) music in the Universe and he is British. He is much more akin to what you played when you utilized the traditional Japanese music. Brit music from the 30s and 40s? I'd stay away from that and pick a modern Brit artist. Not quite keeping with the theme of "Wartime Faves" however you just might find a universe worth exploring. Your fans certainly would not object and they will go "what in the heck is that beautiful and melancholy music in the background?" Or no music at all - that might also be a relief for many modeling fans. Whoever reads this and understand please inform the Waggish American that i'm right on about this subject. Be well.

He is in his element in long non-vocal pieces and oh shit I just remembered "copyright" - forget everything I typed about including a well-known composer in your videos. Check him out though.

You probably get asked this all the time bit I'm new to models and airbrushing and wondered if you had any tips or what putty stuff you use as masks?
Putty stuff is Silly Putty, but I’ve had problems lately with it. Blutack is better. I don’t really have any tips, but if you’ve it specific questions I can try to answer them

Great build i didnt have that wing gap issue with mine I built the desert version, detailed the cockpit with belts then realised it's closed 😅. So i cut it open its a great kit and small bit of filler needed on the leading edge around the bump. only thing I added was brake lines. Your paint job came out awesome

@@TheWaggishAmerican simple mate, I used a old cheap usb phone charger cable you probably have a draw full 😂. I took 1 strand of copper wire out as there thin find a ref pic and just copy the route and bends down the leg into the wheel hub I use a pin to poke in a tiny hole then super glue it in. It's easier than how I explained honestly, takes a few mind to do.
I haven't done anything bigger than 1/72 only built 4 kits all air fix fw190 spitfire mk1 this and the p51d. So if I can do it with only 4 aircraft builds under my belt you would smash it.

@@TheWaggishAmerican zevzda's revell also reboxed it the flanker D is big even in 1/72. The sherman only took a hour and everything is straight so can't complain. lucky i only paid £10 for a battle front set if I looked inside the box i would have asked for £9 change. This set is an avoid at all costs.

Nice job TheWag. 7:56 Silly Putty for the masking? At the end you mentioned the wheel wells had no paint color call out. What I have done when that happens is Google the instructions from another manufacture of the same plane/tank. I use the manufacture and kit number then. Google Images. Silly putty on the fuse because I was lazy, tape on the wings. Super oily putty, messed it up pretty bad. Had to repaint a lot of it

Because British music is hard to come by
the RAF used the Tomahawk in the Western Desert...the Battle of Britain was not the only time the RAF saw combat...the incidental music from the film fits well enough
