    As always please be tactful in the comments. Constructive criticism is fine but all rude, aggressive and out rightly negative comments will be removed. I make for fun, not for competition, and there is no room for hate on my channel as there is enough in the world elsewhere
    Disclaimer: Most of the products I use in my videos from AK Interactive, AnyZ & VMS Supplies were sent to me for free, but with no obligations to promote them. The rest are purchased with my own money and built up throughout the years I've been making models on this channel. Being truthful about the products I use and only promoting ones I believe are good enough to use is one of the foundations of this channel. Statements I make are entirely my own and I have not been influenced to promote one product over the other. I cannot be bought and I stand by this to deliver you useful and informative videos.
    Time lapse video of the full build, painting and weathering of the Airfix's Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale model kit as shown by The Inner Nerd. This video aims to deliver the fundamental and basic skills and knowledge needed to assemble, paint and weather a small scale kit, using Airfix's Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale model kit. These tools can be considered professional, but this video is about the skills of basic modelling using the correct tools that make the job easier.
    This video explains my process in the building, painting and weathering of Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale. I start the video by building the scale model kit using Tamiya and AK Interactive glues and Mr Hobby tools. The key to building the Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale is to carefully read the instructions using the tutorial as a guide. Take care in assembling the scale model kit so the parts fit accurately and align as intended.
    To paint the Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale it is best to use an airbrush. This video covers the airbrush basics so that you can see thinning of paint and application onto the scale model kit. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used in this video along with Ak Interactive Real Colors, Tamiya Acrylics, Mr Hobby Lacquer and Alclad II Metal effect Lacquers. Thinning paint is very important and I explain how to do it using the correct thinners for each paint type.
    Decals are applied with the aid of Tamiya Mark Fit Strong. This is a much more intense product than Micro Sol an Set solution and helps conform even the thickest decals onto the Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale model kit.
    The final part is the weathering using more AK Interactive weathering products and oil paints from Winsor & Newton and Abteilung 502, weathering washes from AMMO by Mig Jimenez and finally VMS Pigments. I start the weathering with an enamel wash to bring out the panel lines on the scale model kit. I use oil washes from AMMO. To seal in I use a clear acrylic from VMS Matte varnish. More detailed weathering follows using oil paints enabling me to add streaks, grime and bleaching onto the model to give it more used and weathered effect. The VMS matte varnish is airbrushed onto the Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale. This matte varnish helps weathering as the matte finish allows more oil paint to stain the model surface. Dust and mud weathering effects are created using VMS pigments to imitate the weathering on tyres and undercarriage.

    Hi everyone, thanks for watching. The modelling stand I'm using is currently unavailable. Sorry for this inconvenience but I plan to make it available again at www.theinnernerd.com
    I hope this video will be able to help you out if you're new to modelling or new to some techniques used when making one. I tried to cover everything that has been asked in the comments sections from my other videos but keep it simple at the same time. Sorry if I don't shut up for a lot of the video, there's a lot to cover! Anyway here I go again...
    Let me know what you think and if you'd like to see more beginner/intermediate tutorial styled videos in the future and if so what should they cover?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  3 роки тому +2

      Okay that's good to know. Just for reference for others too here is my working pressures using my H&S Evo Silverline. The thinning ratios are never calculated to measurement, more paint-by-paint, but if you see here 20:18 and here 21:51 in the video you can see how the paint should spray.
      0.15mm needle/nozzle throughout all paintwork.

      @@hubristicmystic Hello. I would suggest waiting until the next day. Although these AK Real Colours dry to the touch almost instantly, it's best to leave them to properly cure overnight before applying masking tape or it could pull to paint with it when removed

    I've been an award winning aeromideller since the early 1970s (and I was aeromodelling even earlier than that). I know (almost) all of the tricks, but I'm happy to say even I have picked up new ideas today. This video should be promoted by all of the aircraft model kit manufacturers. It is absolutely superb. I take my hat off. Indeed, one of my many professional roles is that I'm a consultant educator. Not only do you really know your stuff, but you are a superb educator. Amazing. Such a pleasure to have found you. Now, all I have to do is to find your name and how to get in touch with you. Fantastic.

      Wow that's fantastic to hear, there truly are 1001 ways to make a model. With the amount of views this video is receiving I hope that one day it will get spotted, fingers crossed. And I appreciate the kind words, I work hard to try to both capture and convey what's happening on screen in an accessible way so I'm pleased to see that is recognised.

I remember I was listening to the Bob Seger Night Moves album during some of the build, great album back in those days and it was a relatively new release at the time. Arguably one of the most beautiful world war II fighter aircraft if not the most beautiful.

    Wow, thank you so much for this! I was a mad model builder when I was a nipper and got fairly good at it, and now at 61 I'm itching to try my hand once more. And what do you know, for my first project I just happened to have chosen a 1/72 Airfix Spitfire (the Mk.Ia kit). I don't expect my finished product to be any near as competently built as yours, but you have provided a ton of excellent info, tips and guidance, not to mention inspiration. Your Spit looks fantastic by the way, a truly wonderful job!

      Thank you for watching it :) I'm pleased to see that you're back to the hobby once more! This kit is a nice little starter. Some of the panels don't fit that well but it's a nice easy model to get back into things.
      One thing to take away from this video is that you don't need to follow every step I do. The sanding after decals and some of the weathering processes aren't exactly necessary to complete the model, but are there for reference once you are. Hope you enjoyed and good luck with your builds too!

      @@TheInnerNerd Heh, I certainly don't intend to go to the lengths you do right off the bat - I'll be happy if I can get the model to look at least halfway decent! This will be my first build in over 40 years, and I want to ease myself back into the swing. Your videos will be tremendous sources for advanced techniques further down the track and for what equipment I should consider acquiring in the future. Thanks again!

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  3 роки тому +7

      Well as I mentioned in the video this equipment is what I've built up over the 5 years I've run the channel and been modelling. I'm doing this alongside a full time job unlike some of the other UA-camrs. But I hope the message got through that you don't need the most expensive tools, just higher quality ones combined with some good techniques and processes can make a relatively good model at the end. The skills throughout the video are what is needed to make a model to this standard, whether people think that is good or not is another debate. But there are many more processes that I missed out or simplified in an attempt to keep the video beginner to intermediate friendly.
      The only tools to make this were the ones shown at the beginning at the video. So some snips, a pin vise, sandpapers, tapes and an airbrush, then of course the paints of your choice. If you're new to modelling you don't necessarily need all of these immediately to make a model, but you will to make one turn out like this. Thanks for watching :)

    This let’s me go back to the end 70s beginning 80s where I was really into modeling! Especially early ww2 aircraft. I won many IPMS contests, reaching 1st place in 3 US state’s. It’s astounding how one stagers the search for more authenticity and perfection. Does squadron Green putty still exist? Or Flowquill airbrush paint’s?
    Airfix was in it’s mold details quite coarse, hasagawa and Tamina was the none plus ultra at that time. But not all models came from good mold’s and one had to adjust the details. One tends to over weather or detail , I think this is where the perfection starts. Often to large rivets or panel joints. Less is often more !
    Question does a silver paste still exist? I used it for creating bare metal optics, it’s somewhat oil based so if oversprayed one can use a piece of tape to pull of bits of deck paint on leading edge areas to simulate chipped paint.
    Nice to see that modeling is still going good. I wonder if kids still get into it? Or has the PlayStation taken all the room ?
    Nice vid

      So many of us older guys seem to be returning to this fabulous hobby. Speaking from my own experience, I tried to introduce my own children to the pleasures of model building but they just didn't get into it, in part because there are so many alternative attractions (including PlayStation and other video games) and also because they didn't have the same affinity for those classic World War Two aircraft that those of us born in the decades after the war felt. There was also an issue with patience! Back in the day, if the weather was too nasty to allow us to play outside, there really weren't that many other ways to enjoy play time but building a model aircraft was most certainly one of the most appealing ones for many of us.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you for watching :) Starting cheaply and simply is a good method. You'll need to learn the basic techniques I outline in the video before trying them all out with the more professional equipment. The basic tools in my opinion would be; Snips, Tweezers, Sandpaper, Extra Thin Cement, Paint, Brushes and that's about it. That is the bare bones of what will help you make a scale model. All of the other stuff is to add the effects like weathering and to get the decals to sit properly - but isn't entirely necessary if you don't want to - that can come later :)
      There is a link in the description to a good starter setup for an airbrush. Don't go expensive straight away - learn the ropes first before you splash out on an expensive brush. And also a more expensive brush isn't actaully necessary. The airbrush in the description is easily good enough as long as you keep it clean. I think it's a myth that a super expensive airbrush will do a bette rjob. In my experience the quality comes from the paint and thinning along with pressure adjustment. Unless you're painting miniatures an expensive brush is a little bit overkill.
      I hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

I will use some of the equipment and techniques from this video in my next build and will probably return again to this video in future. So yes, for a simple build using paints, glue and a single brush from a starter kit, this video is over complicated but for a beginner who wants to take the hobby seriously and produce a decent finished model this video is probably the best of its kind on UA-cam

      Start simple; Tweezers, Extra thin glue, snips and some paint -the rest can come once you have the foundations of building a model. With each model try something new, something that’ll require you to get another piece of equipment. Over time you’ll soon build up an arsenal of equipment that you can use to make every model. I hope this helps and inspires you to start with the simple steps. Thanks for watching and good luck :)

      Thanks, I am hilarious aren't I. Getting used to talking into a microphone a little more now so can be myself whilst talking into an inanimate object. Thanks for watching and I'll be making more as the year comes to a close.
