    A complete time-lapse build detailing the build and painting process of the new-ish tooled Airfix Bf-109E-4. This is a very good kit, with minimal fit issues. Some parts were a bit finicky, such as the weapons in the wing, which were prone to breaking or bending. Panel lines were good and deep, capturing my panel line wash well. I used an aftermarket decal set for this project- this was a lot of fun, and I had a great time with the process. These decals are thin, with clear carrier film, and very detailed and clean printing. Overall, it was a lot of fun. It's a cheap kit, and well detailed for the scale.

    I have this exact model in my "to do" stack. I recently built the FW 190 which went together very nicely. The canopy plastic on these Airfix planes are sooooo fragile however. I am currently building the 1/72 Bristol Beaughfighter and the only issues so far are the engine cowling assemblies......3 pieces that just would match or align sufficiently without some light filing. Good video and narrative. I have been building military models since the 70's and these internet videos are such a great guide. Thanks.

      @stevethefishdotnet 5 років тому

      Thanks. I'm not a builder who merits having fans, but I appreciate the sentiment. I'm not sure how I stumbled upon your channel, but I've been considering getting this Airfix kit. It looks like only the aftermarket decals come with the swastikas, am I right?

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  5 років тому

      That is correct. Airfix is one of the companies that refuses to print the swastika- it makes sense, given that their primary market is Europe. If you want a 109e at this scale, there aren't many better options. Aftermarket decals are pretty much a must, though.
      While I've enjoyed many of your builds, I'm honestly a bigger fan of the fact that you are a modeler who isn't afraid to be politically outspoken. Most politically public modelers seem to be like Spencer Pollard, and it was very refreshing to find a modelmaker with views so similar to mine.

    • @stevethefishdotnet
      @stevethefishdotnet 5 років тому

      Thanks. I never said much about politics or society until the Wikileaks bombshells were dropping in the fall of 2016. With the email leaks exposing the Clinton Foundation's involvement with child trafficking as well as the Satanic "Spirit Cooking" rituals and even pedophile sex abuse and child sacrifice, I felt I had to say something. Especially after seeing the Instagram pictures and artwork belonging to the people involved that depicting child sex abuse, I knew the USA would be doomed if that nasty woman and her cohorts were running the country. And the response to my speaking out has been far more positive than negative. Sure, I've probably alienated some snowflakes who can't stand differing opinions. I'm just waiting for the military tribunals to start. I don't know who Spencer Pollard is, but you and I are not a minority. The Left likes to pretend that they are the majority. When they call for boycotts for Chick Fil A or In & Out Burger, people line up around the block to eat there. But when Nike makes some stupid ad campaign pandering to SJWs, they lose billions of dollars.

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  5 років тому

      Spencer Pollard is the editor of Model Airplane International Magazine. And, he is a very good modeler, with several helpful videos on his channel. However, he spends virtually all of his twitter time bashing my president, and being loudly against Brexit. All other points I agree on. The entire Kavanaugh process is the most infuriating thing to hit the political circus lately. Honestly, it's more terrifying to me than anything that happened during the election. This could happen to literally any of us. It is totally a question of due process vs public opinion, and it all rests on the constantly changing, totally unreliable word of a woman who was allegedly maybe assaulted 35 years ago, funded totally by Soros-connected individuals. These sorts of lies can hit any of us at any time. It blows my mind, and make me petrified of even TALKING to women.

      yeah... that was a mistake. somehow I didn't put the file into the right folder after recording. I taped off the surrounding area, only exposing the damaged panels. then I cut away the parts on the outside that were pushed up. finally, putty was applied to the whole area and the sanded to match the tape. Then the panel lines were rescribed with a resin razor saw, and the whole thing was polished to match the surrounding plastic with finer and finer sandpapers.

  • @argentinianspotter
    @argentinianspotter 6 років тому +3

    The model ended up looking great, specially after repairing the glue damage.
    I´m not a big fan of Airfix, their models have really thick sprue gates on some parts, such as the ones on the Bf 109E´s slats in 1:48.

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  6 років тому

      Argentinian Spotter The spruce gates are annoying, and I’m not a massive fan of the soft plastic, but as far as fit/detail/price coming together, (and top-shelf decals), Airfix is pretty good. It’d be nice if they had a bit more variety in the range though- it’s mostly common or safe wwii subjects.

    Bill

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  3 роки тому

      I generally don't like putting figures in/on things that are not in a diorama. I don't know why, exactly, but if I had to try and put it into words I guess...
      A model without a person feels like a miniature of the real thing. But as soon as you include a person without a scene, it feels, to me, like a toy. Instead of a study of the thing itself it is something else. To include a figure does not properly contextualize the subject.
      So with very very few exceptions I prefer to keep unbased models unmanned. The only exception to this rule in the entirety of this channel so far has been my Seehund, and even then that *was* based, just not in a diorama.
      If a figure is particularly nice or interesting, I will make sure to make a base and include it. In the shelf, for example, I've got an X-15. That pilot is unique; no matter how many models you build, not many will have that distinctive pressure suit. So that will definitely be getting a base.

    • @origamichik3n
      @origamichik3n 5 років тому

      Sadly, thanks to some arseholes this millennia old symbol is now firmly associated with nazi regime.
      In some countries (e.g. Germany) swastikas are forbidden by law in any context. You don't even see them on an actual aircraft in a museum. Forum moderators will politely but firmly ask you to either photoshop your model pictures or take them down. And so on. So companies come up with solutions like this to make their models "safe" to sell in any country (some don't provide swastika decals at all). Half of the swastika is not swastika. What you do with those halves is not company's responsibility.

      @@origamichik3n I heard that Germany lifted the ban for swastikas if they're related to nothing else but history, anyway, damn. History accuracy in models have nothing to do with nazism or shits.

      @@mariebcfhs9491 I didn't know about this. But even so Germany is but one country and companies want to play safe. Because there is law and then there are people who interpret the law. For example in my country soviet and nazi symbols are allowed as long as it's used for historical or educational purposes. Still, two reenactors, one with soviet and one with german uniforms, were arrested during officially approved event, their gear confiscated, and had to waste many months in courts until they managed to prove that they did not break any law.

    Just finished one of these last week (although it was the starter kit E-3 version) and its the worst model i have seen yet. There was massive amounts of flash all over the sprews and parts, there was multiple spots where the plastic was malformed or had chunks missing. The entire interal oil radiator piece was missing, clean from the sprew and the bag was sealed so it mustve been stolen at the factory. One of the notches for the landing gear was completely mishapen and i had to carve it out to get the damn thing to fit. Thankfully *most* of these issues aren't too noticable and the model looks quite good. Nonetheless amazed at the lack of quality control.

      ?

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  5 років тому

      I have no idea what exactly this is in reference to- It takes me anywhere from three weeks to a month and a half to finish a model aircraft. I can't remember if I mention the fact that I build four-five models at a time in this video, but that's the only thing I can think you would be referncing so I'll just answer assuming that is your question.
      It's a combination of a few factors.
      One, I hate having just one project going mainly due to drying time. If I have at least three models going at once, and I stagger each project's start by a couple of days, I will never have a time when all of my projects are stuck in some stage of drying.
      Two, I find it actually saves me time and helps fight off 'bench fatigue'. Sometime I will be crusiing along in a build, and for whatever reason I just can't bring myself to turn on my airbrush. I could build for years, but resigning myself to painting is a challenge. With multiple kits running, even if I get like that with the same regularity, more work gets done when I'm okay to paint.
      Three, saving material. This has been bigger lately as I've been doing more and more paint mixing and airbrush weathering. I don't have a means to store paint, and even if I could the quantities I mix are small and the colors are always different. Running multiple projects at the same time that use the same paint helps me actually use all the paint I mix. And on some of these projects I could throw away half a mixing cup becuase I made too much and didn't have anything to do with the leftover.
      Four, the amount of time I have in my life to actually do things. I don't talk about it too much on the channel, but I have a number of other things that eat my time. I'm a fiction writer, RC flier, sailor, motocross racer. sailing/moto eats up most of my 'long' time on weekends. Weekdays are filled with the other ones, and models where I can fit them between work, dinner, and sleep. So when I have time to work on models, working on several at once is pretty much the only way I'll get any number done.
      Four is a particularly notable problem right now- for algorithm purposes, I've been preparing two seasons of a weekly model show for months now. I have about forty days until I move and lose access to my airbrush for the next year. If I don't have three or four projects going at full pace, pouring as much of my time into them as possible, there is no way I'll get this show done (and it's still really unclear if I can pull it off), AND I wouldn't have any time to work on non-show models, which would tank my channel even worse than the three months here without a video has done.
      I don't know if this is what you were refering too but if anyone was wondering that is why I try to build several models at once.
