I Can't Stop Building These Kits! The Airfix Curtiss Hawk 81-A-2 Plastic Model Kit in 1/72 Scale

  • Developed from the earlier P36 Hawk designed by the Curtiss aviation company, the improved P40 Warhawk saw combat service with a number of nations during the Second World War.
    One such unit that flew these aircraft was that of the American Volunteer Group flying for the Chinese air force against the Japanese. This unit earned the nickname the “flying tigers” due to the teeth painted on the noses of their aircraft, and the news reports of their ferocious combat missions against the enemy.
    Join me in this video as I build and review the 1/72 scale plastic model kit of the Curtiss Hawk 81-A-2 from Airfix. For some reason, this particular tooling of the P40 is probably my most-built kit over the last 5 years of my channel!

      When I was a kid, the old Airfix Magazine always referred to the pilot figures as Mutt and Jeff. I thought that this was a reference to Mutt Summers and Jeffrey Quill (both Vickers test pilots), turns out Mutt and Jeff were a pair of cartoon dogs from the 1920’s/30’s. As well as being Cockney rhyming slang for “deaf”

      When I was 12 years old, I started building a P-40B, and I "messed it up real bad". I could have kept going after I cemented the wing assembly pieces together. I could have just pretended it got battle damage in Hawaii at 8:00 a.m. on 7 December or the Philippines 10 hours later in 1941. But I just left the half built, unpainted kit in the box for decades.
      At 40 years old, I started learning history from UA-cam and Wikipedia.
      I learned that the Tomahawk Mk. IIA is the export version of the P-40B. I learned that a Tomahawk Mk. IICB is the export version of a P-40C. I learned that the First American Volunteer Group ... their planes were painted like Tomahawks, listed as Tomahawk Mk. IIB, but they were made with lots of parts from Tomahawk Mk. IIA. So they get called by all these names.
      Now, I am preparing a diorama with three small wooden crates because that is how each of these airplanes were shipped from New York, USA to Rangoon (now Yangon), in the Crown Colony of Burma (now Myanmar).
      I am going to take my old 1/72 scale P-40B sub- assemblies and paint them to look like a Tomahawk, only I am NOT going to attach the wings or the propeller assembly to the fuselage. Also, to be historically accurate, I am not going to apply the decals.
      I am going to put the propeller assembly (including the spinner) in one open crate, and nobody will notice the issues I had with the propeller shaft, and so forth.
      I am going to put the wing assembly in another open crate, and nobody will notice the trouble I had with the landing gear, and so forth.
      I am going to put the fuselage (with the painted cockpit cemented in it) in the third open crate, and nobody will notice the issues I had with the control stick, and stick forth.
      And I am going to pretend that the crates just arrived in Rangoon in the summer of 1941.
      The crates were opened and the painted, but unmarked, sub-assemblies were assembled at what was then the R.A.F. Mingaladon airfield which is now the Yangon International Airport.
      So I am going to use the partially assembled kit I messed up many years ago to make a diorama with three open crates.

      This comment is to correct a significant typo in my other comment, and then add a few thoughts.
      The Tomahawk Mk. IIB is the export version of the P-40C. (There is no such thing as a Tomahawk Mk. IICB, I just had troubled with the backspace when I thought I had fixed it. )
      The First (1st) A.V.G.'s 99 Mk. IIB Tomahawks had Mk. IIB wings which were better for belly landings than Mk. IIA Tomahawks. But the 99 Mk. IIB Tomahawks that the 1st A.V.G. got ... did not have the plumbing for a drop tank like the Mk. IIB Tomahawks that the R.A.F, R.C.A.F., R.A.A.F, S.A.A.F., and others got.
      You see the 1st A.V.G. with drop tanks in news reels (short movies) because those movies were taken after 22 March 1942 when they got their first batch of P-40E flew in by way of W. Africa and then India. The estimated 30 P-40E they got before they were disbanded on 4 July 1942 had working drop tanks.
      The 1st A.V.G. were replaced by other USAF units that took the Flying Tigers nickname and about 5 pilots from the 1st A.V.G.

    Well done Matt, your model making ethos is the same as mine, as long as you are happy with the end result, then that’s fine. Like you, I try to do the best I can when building a model, but I am less concerned with accuracy of the decals as per the machine intended to be portrayed, and other things. As long as I have done my best and the model looks good on the shelf, then it has done its job. Sometimes, especially in these recently challenging times we live in, the bettering of our mental health by achieving a satisfactory result is the biggest bonus. I am going to try the P40 from Airfix after your recommendation, I love building old and new kits from them, so should be good.

      Thanks! I hope you enjoy this one! Yeah, i do very much try and build for fun but also present a (slightly) unbiased review to help fellow modellers pick up some good kits. At the end of the day, we need to vote with our wallets and tell the companies what we are willing to accept in our kits - get the good ones and leave the bad ones

    I had that kit but it was one of the 100 I sold. The P-40 on its way to me this week is the North Africa theatre Starter Set (old type starter set, not the simplified click fit kits Airfix call starter sets going forward). I have an early WWII RAF example built.

    Have a try of this method for masking. I’m building the Airfix Wellington at the moment so I’ll use that as an example. Measure the model (or get the figures off the side of the box), now measure the drawing of the scheme on the box (Wimpy has a separate sheet for this). So then divide the kit length by the drawing length. 272mm / 163 mm = 167. So on your photocopier print ratio should be set at 167%. But let’s confirm those figures by looking at span. 365/221=165%. Pretty good, split the difference at 166%. Paint the undersides of your model, then the palest top shade. Now cut your photocopy out and fasten it to your kit with blue tax blobs the size of a grain of rice and spray the dark shade. Bobs your mothers brother.

    This is a great kit, and you have done a fantastic job on it, but one small thing that should be noted is if youre going for realism, you should refrain from making the panel lines look dark as irl the only panels that have dark panel lines are ones that get opened a lot eg. engine cowling (atleast for jets). I know how hard it is with airfix kits and their really deep panel lines. Anyway you have done a fantastic job, and for the price of the kit it definitely is understandable how you cant stop building these lol. Please keep bringing these videos as we all love them lol

    Great model you've done there. I've only built the RAF 112 Sqn version thus far and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just a few things I'd like to add if that's okay? The exhausts would look a little better if the mould line was removed and the shine was taken down a bit. If you're feeling a little brave maybe drill out the exhausts holes too. The green camo on the wings should go around the roundels. The reason for that is because as mentioned these aircraft where meant to go to the RAF and the RAF roundels are bigger than the Chinese ones (look at the Airfix painting guide on the left wing). White tac sausages are better than blue tac due to the high oil content in the blue tac. Also the size of the sausage will dictate how much of a "hard" edge you'll have, the thinner the sausage the harder it will be. If you look at the right side of the vertical stabilizer/rudder at the bottom, the green camo has a weird blended edge. This is because you've airbrushed at one angle to the white tac sausage then gone over it at a more vertical angle and not given the first coat its second coat. I so hope that makes sense! Apart from those little nitbits, it's a great model and better than my version of the AVG P-40 as it has been built! 🤣 Only other bit is about Airfix doing the roundels the same colour, the underside would've been darker than the top due to the sunlight, but that's a moot point.
    I am surprised it wasn't mention that Walt Disney drew the artwork for these aircraft. As far as I'm aware these are the only ones he ever done. But I do love how you can see your skills progressing from the first P-40 kit to the latest AVG kit. I won't say anymore as I feel like I'm being an arse when that isn't my intention. Keep up the good work!

      Thanks for the tips - the exhausts were previously mentioned in another comment, but to be honest I only really noticed them in the video during the premiere and thought i should have cleaned them up. They aren't massive parts so the camera just helps to show off those errors because it zooms in better than my eyes haha!
      I did notice the camo around the roundels on the box instructions, but for the moment couldn't figure out the best way to replicate that so decided to do the scheme that i ended up with - in the future I'm thinking of scanning the instructions into the computer, scaling and then printing them out - but I guess we'll see

    • @Dazziosan
      @Dazziosan 2 роки тому +1

      @@ModelMinutes when I get around to my one, I'll probably use a compass cutter to do the roundel out of masking tape then thin white tac sausages for the rest. If you haven't got a compass cutter, you can get a decent cheap one in "The Works" if you have one near you? The exhausts aren't bad, they are just noticeable because of how shiny they are in comparison to the rest of the aircraft. I tend to dirty mine up with Tamiya weathering powders which helps to hide any mistakes I've made. I also forgot to add that Vallejo paints are pretty famous for lifting up. They really do need a primer - found that out the hard way personally, but apart from that I love them.
      Looking forward to the next kit. :)

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  2 роки тому +3

      Why would that be offensive?
      I buld 1/72 for a number of reasons - they aren't that expensive, the level of detail can be quite good, they are usually much more easier to purchase and not so much a strain on the bank balance, they don't take loads of time to build and don't take up much storage space
      Larger scale models cost more, take more time to build and thus make videos on, and also are more difficult to find storage space for. I do build other scales, I just have more in this one...

    The broad panel lines are exaggerated. It would have been better to fill them with putty, sand them and perhaps rescribe some of the grooves with an exacto. It takes much longer, I know, but the result would be clearly better. The depiction of chipped paint on the wings, for instance, is a bit unrealstic too, as you place silver spots more or less randomly where paint would hardly flake off during maintenance...
