+rdavidr Yeah, but you'll never catch the killer. $40? Yeah that $40 is going to give you projects for lots more videos. Great deal for the snare and stands alone. BTW: those Rock stands are crap. The metal bends and dents.
Nice find! If you're looking for something to do with the toms and bass, it might be interesting to cut the shells down and make a couple of travel/practice kits similar to Pearl's Rhythm Traveler.
My first drum kit I’ve ever purchased was from offerup, and it was in worse condition as this one presented in the video. Taking the time to restore it really taught me a lot about drums, and there’s something very relaxing about taking everything apart and putting it back together. I wish I had the storage space to continue purchasing busted drums but for now, I’ll enjoy the one I restored 😁
This thing reminds me a lot of my first drum set because basically it's the same thing. Mine was a Scott Percussion branded one. Same lugs, same wrap, same 6 lug kick, 5 lug floor and 4 lug mid tom. Mine also had a 4 lug small tom. Probably the same Chinese stencil kit. It's still in my garage somewhere and is probably going to be made into lamps or furniture or something. It's pile of crap but it's what got me into drums and even though it was a pretty bad sounding kit, it was still really fun to play. Thanks for bringing that memory up.
+Bo Diddly The HW store has Krylon spray paint for plastic and it is a little flexible. I've used it, (not on sanded drum wraps), works pretty well. might work. Not a big choice of colors. I magine you would have to sand to bresk the glaze on the wrap, maybe 400 grit??. Then clear coat??
Drumming can be an expensive hobby, but u dont have to drop a ton of money just to have fun. If you want to start drumming, all u need is a practice pad and sticks. You can get that for 25$.
There was a summer storm here a couple of years ago that flooded everyone's basement and you'd be amazed to see how many crappy drumsets like that there were on the curbs. TKO is like toys r us and you're saving grace was that pitted up chrome snare that someone probably bought separately. These kits are barely worth buying new heads for considering they'd be three times the price of the kit. lastly, the hardware especially the lugs are beyond cheap and you didn't snag at least one good cymbal. I love in Craigslist ads where someone bought the cheapest kit possible and the photo has it set up in some cockamamie configuration that says it's never been used. And the kit has top of the line zildjian A's all around.
Despite needing an obvious clean, I think you got a great bargain! I've been looking for a 10" snare with a good brand name that doesn't cost a fortune for ages! Plus the cymbals or the skins alone, with a good clean should fetch at least £40-60 I'd think. Hats off to you sir!
Dude! Holy shit! I KNEW I'd heard of ROC before and now I know why! About a month ago my bassist clued me into an estate sale near me in San Francisco where the guy had a massive garage FULL of drums and parts. I'm talking hundreds of drums and blank shells and WEIRD sizes, too. There was a floor tom that was about 3-4 feet DEEP. Anyway, turns out the guy started ROC and they specialized in affordable custom drums that they would ship to anywhere in the world. You'd send in your specifications (no matter how batshit crazy they were), he'd make them, box them and ship them. I nabbed a sweet sounding 13" steel shell timbale for my kit and an 8"x14" blank shell that I turned into a pretty nice snare drum. All for $30. Had this been anywhere closer to Virginia I'd have found a way to let you know as this was a drum tinkerer's dream. Cymbals, stands, whole kits, 28" bass drums, 6" mounted toms, and racks upon racks of shells, lugs, and rims. Guy even had the shell for a cocktail bass drum ready to go. If my fiancee hadn't been there to reign me in, I'd have run home for our car and cleaned that guy out. This really turned into a tale. Anyway, the tl;dr version is Google ROC Drums and read all about that crazy 80s experiment in affordable custom drums!
Heck of a deal you got there rdavidr! I'd probably buy all of that just for the 10" snare and the ZBT crash! FYI: The nut thingy that the tension rod screws into is called a "swivel nut".
Great Buy David!- I occasionally buy $30-$50 kits for parts only and then toss out the shells. You got over $40 in just the hardware!.....BY THE WAY- That "RocK" Cymbal stand was made by Gibraltar in the 90's. I still have one that I bought brand new in 1996.
You did great my Man! A few years back I bought a Tama red wine color, a smaller Kick than yours. I got all hardware and 2 crash HHK Paiste and hi hat and stand all for 3 Bills. So you did fantastic.
Ha! I used to sell TKO! I think that was St. Louis Music. I liked how we order parts for those drums. A set of legs helped a friend's 80's Yammy FT stand up a little higher. Good ol' generics. 22/12/13/16/14x5 (6.5?). Works all the time.
I bought an Excel 5 piece and a Pearl 5 piece made of maple and a lining of acrylic for $125. It came with Sabian Xs20's and some really nice factory crap cymbals that I worked on and made into effects cymbals.
That is the same kit as as my first drum kit, it came with an 18 inch zildjian planet z crash ride, 14 inch sabian B8 hi hats, tama titan stands, a pacific double bass pedal, and a ludwig black beauty snare drum for 250 dollars.
I'd buy it to cannibalize parts to create an ultra portable suitcase drum kit. A full kit, even a small one still takes a shit ton of room for someone who just likes to hold together a few acoustic instruments for after dinner beer and standards.
Really good deal, those hats and the snare alone are probably worth $100 on ebay. Great find! Have you given any thought to constructing a super small pocket kit for portability? And I'm still crossing my fingers you'll attempt a dollar store glitter and polyurethane finish!
Great find and yeah, definitely worth $40. I'm always amazed and a bit saddened when I see gear mistreated like this. You can get a brand new Gibraltar hi hat clutch for $8.99 from Musician's Friend including shipping, so why the cheap foam and zip tie treatment? The former owner obviously has no respect for the craft. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this project.
+Arthur Vyncke (Ephora) I bought a ludwig kit about 2 years ago and I clean it a few times a month and already the wraps are already starting to warp. I'm afraid if I re-wrap my drums it'll look worse than it does now.
Hey man, great channel. I built a drum out an old clothes dryer drum when I was a kid. It sounded like a big timbale since I only did one side. I always wanted to pair it some normal timbales in an auxillary set but unfortunately my dad accidentally backed over it with the car when he was pulling in the garage one day after work. It was built from scrap and spare parts so no biggie. Anyway, just thought I'd throw the idea out there.
Nice score! I'd keep the hi hat stand and snare stand, sell the cymbals and snare and at least double the 40 bucks spent. The rest I would give away for free after I've striped it for any useful parts.
yhu should use the toms for snares or repair the whole drum set from before and after so yhu can so yhur talent also yhu could make a rack with the hardware it will be awesome. ...I would buy it to make a new project or something but awesome ideas you have.. keep it up
you're the only person I've ever felt like subscribing to on this thing, man. im into what you are doing and may hit you up for help on some shit if i could. thanks
I got this same kit off freecycle but in much better condition with some vitage hardware also in pretty good condition only one good cymbal but very happy as I've only just started my drumming journey :)
rdavidr it is time to do another bass drum beater video! make a bass drum beater out of bone! Metal AF!!!! ima copy and paste this on all your sheet until you finally do it!
could you polyurethane the inside/outside of cheap drums as a project? i did it a few times with success, but would love to see your take on it. great work and channel!!!
sweat deal! hey the Rock stand is a Gibraltar. Rock is a mid-price line I guess. Also, can you do a video on removing rust from hardware? would be great!!
Fix it and give it to some local kid who can't afford drums.
Nice 👏
@Anonymous not really, most kids arent even interested in music
@@deadiwtd1858 Yeah im sure no kid within a 50 mile radius wants to play or learn the drums

Hate those 5 lug drums... oddball.... don't forget to show em the heat gun & paint trick on those worn heads... ;) Great find BTW...
The right way to put on a HH clutch... smh ive been doing it wrong all these years
Hell yeah $40.00 worth of hardware parts at least, then the cymbals make it bonus day.
It's worth 40$, for sure. I think the Mapex snare alone might be worth around 40$, so anything else you could use is just gravy. Good find!
I bought a 60's Trixon kit two days ago for 50$. Fantastic sounding kit that had been sitting in some attic for years! Buying second hand is it!
The throne is probably the best part of the kit! Can't wait for more vids on this kit :D

TKO PERCUSSION! Oh my gosh I can't believe it. I have stack made with one of their terrible cymbals, AND I LOVE IT! Great find bro! hahaha.
$40 bucks for that snare and hi hat stand alone is a good deal, with that 10'inch snare included it's a steal.
The Rock hardware was made by Gibraltar. It was their single braced hardware line. I used to have a couple of those stands
The snare and snare stand are worth $$$!!! I would totally buy that kit.
a kit like that is around 100€ over here, so yeah i´ll buy it for 40$
+SuperVistaprint Here in Serbia, I would pay around 300-400€ for that kit with cymbals and everything...
Scale Plastic Workshop Yep, in Croatia too
I really love the technique for setting up that hi hat clutch
