I watched this last night to refresh my slice serve and played today. Remarkable. Thanks again! Best slice serve instruction without the fake instructions. I found that tossing the ball a little more to the right...at about 1h30 and lower helped with power and consistency in getting a good, accurate slice serve that does exactly as intended!! THANK YOU.
The Slice serve is by far my absolute favorite! The only thing I like more than your helpful step by step improvement guide is to watch the opponent run after the ball everytime you absolutely nail your slice serve.
Another excellent clear easy to follow lesson from a great coach. I am certain your own game is improving. You must be following your advice & getting a lot of practice.
Perfect timing, I've been working on my slice serve the last few months. Much great information here that I didn't know about. Thanks for posting Simon!
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Hi Simon, I would love to see some strategy videos in singles. Point construction, patterns, shot selection, etc. to win when you're either serving or returning. Your videos are some of the best on UA-cam. Thanks!
Thank you for the great tips. Showing the ball with clock was really helpful. May be you can show a dot on the ball as to which area we should hit. In this video it was clear that, not on the side but the face we’re facing to create the power along with the spin.
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I'd love to see the first and second serve differences, the actual snap positions for both serves (including forward momentum vs. staying sideways ) in gradual progressions - Thanks.
Loved the video and content. I’m a High School coach and will be sharing it with my tennis players... only request: show slice on AD side up the tee, how to hit the slice into the body on Deuce side and how far into the court do you toss the ball.
Excellent instruction as usual. Being a lefty I love taking the serve wide on the outside. The problem I have is serving from the deuce side when going up the tee. Any suggestions
@@glenberberet8418 I would focus on carving the ball and really focusing on the spin rate, as opposed to going for power. The spin will give you extra control
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial that second drill in particular was an eye-opener for me. I feel like I can finally hit a good slice serve now! Thanks for the great post.
Hi Simon, thank you for the great video as always. Your explanations and examples are the easiest to understand. One thing though, could you please turn up the volume of your voice or maybe get a better mic? Your voice is soft compared to the much louder sound effects (and commercials). Thank you!
Thanks for watching. My shotgun mic seems to be low on the past few videos, I noticed that too. It could be time to get a new one, have used it for a few years now so it makes sense. Are there any lessons you would like to see in the near future? All the best Simon
What would be a reason I get a lot of spin on my Alice serves but not soo much pace? I’m assuming it’s because (left handed) I’m hitting the ball more around the 9 o’clock instead of the 10-11 as you mentioned here. Thx guys! Greet video, as alway!
It could be that or you could be cutting it too much, contact point being too thin. Imagine on your forehand when you're going for spin with power, you want to brush the ball but also extend the racket through the ball to produce some power. If you simply brush up, you'll get the spin with no pace. Similar to the slice serve, you want to cut the ball at 11 o'clock in your case but also hit through the contact point for the power. All the best Simon
Great video but can I just clarify more on what appears to be over rotation of the shoulders as most online instruction tells us not to on any serve. Thank you
I've met Mark and watched a few of his demos. Some good stuff, but I'm sure he'd agree that to hit a short angled slice serve, you'll want to open the shoulders at the same time you use the shoulder over shoulder motion
A question: Is the set up for the slice serve identical to any other serve? The direction change comes from the opening of the shoulder, thus disguising the direction/type of serve?
Wow thanks I had no clue about this, all I saw where videos saying keep the body side on and make sure you don’t fall to the left off your serve. That was more for kick serve and is that for flat serve too? Also do you supinate on slice serve? It feels awkward to do that, but I’m not sure if it’s right
I do great shadow swings, plenty of racket drop, when I do real serve, still throw racket at the ball, lose grip but the racket drops very little, is this common with those you give lessons to, any common reason?
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Hi Simon, actually yes...you & Alex may have done something similar already but it would be great to see a video on tactics around building a point and creating space to hit clean winners. Love the channel- great content! Cheers
interesting wording - "Throw your shoulder forward" I always thought " Hit through and across into the pocket" for the slice outwide on the deuce. My problem would be opening the shoulder too much and then going out.
Thanks for watching. When you throw the shoulder into the ball, it really opens up the shoulders for the slice serve. Are there any lessons you would like to see in the near future? All the best Simon
If you use the eastern backhand grip for the slice serve, you can get extra slice for sure but you won't get the same power and won't be able to fully pronate. Much easier to use the continental grip and focus on the right elements - ua-cam.com/video/TzUvhOBrdnM/v-deo.html
Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons agree, though with more spin the serve is more secure and slice serve is often used as second serve or as trick for first serve, in which case I also prefer to have it shorter and with more spin, as opponents usually position themselves further beyond back line
The first drill is just carving ball and there is no pronation, right? is there pronation on the second drill? It's difficult to transition from just carving the ball from the outer edge with no pronation ( drill one) to putting slices on the ball with pronation(drill 2 and 3). That's where I really struggle.
Thanks, I can understand pronation better for flat serves than kick and slice serves, im not getting lots side spin and top spin when I pronate, your vidoes will help, I will practise more. @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
1 o'clock will help but more advanced opponents will pick up so it's a good idea to keep the ball toss the same as for the flat serve but change the mechanics slightly
