  • How To Hit The Perfect Slice Serve In Tennis In 3 Simple Steps.
    In this tennis serve lesson, Top Tennis Training coach Simon Konov will help you hit the perfect slice serve in tennis.
    The slice serve in tennis is one of the most effective ways to start a tennis point on serve for both right and left-handed players.
    If executed correctly, a good slice serve will open the court up on the deuce side for a right-hander and the advantage side for a left-hander.
    The tennis slice serve is also a great weapon to use when going down the "T" on the advantage side for right-handers and also for jamming players into the body on both sides of the tennis court.
    The key to imparting good amounts of spin on the ball is the angle of the racket face at contact. For a typical flat serve you would want to hit the ball more or less flat on with the string bed to gain the most amount of power from pronation.
    For a slice serve however we want to hit the ball on the top right-hand side of the ball (top left for left-handed tennis players).
    If the ball was a clock face, at impact for the tennis slice serve we would want to hit around 1-2 o'clock. This will give us good levels of spin but also allow the ball to dip down into the service box. Some coaches will say to hit the ball at 3 o'clock but if you add any real power to that serve it would drift wide as there is no dip on the serve.
    3 Steps To Hitting The Perfect Tennis Slice Serve
    The first step is using the correct service grip. This is the continental grip, also known as the chopper or hammer grip. This tennis grip will allow you to use supination and pronation on your tennis serve which in turn will give you good control of the racket face prior to, during, and after contact. For the slice serve we want to approach the ball with the side of the racket and open the strings during the contact zone to the ideal position for the slice serve to happen. If we approach the ball with the strings already facing forwards, towards the net, we will not be able to slice that serve effectively and it will turn into a flat serve.
    The ball toss and contact point on the ball. When you are just starting to learn the slice serve it is a good idea to toss the ball more to the right so you can really feel the motion of "cutting the ball". This will allow you to truly experience this service motion and your muscle memory for this serve will start to engage. However, as you progress with this serve, it's better to try to keep the same ball toss for all your serves to increase your disguise on the serve. The more you progress with your tennis game, the stronger your opponents will be and they will be able to read the different serves if you are constantly changing your ball toss on serve.
    Throwing your body into the serve. For a truly great slice serve we want to imagine that our right shoulder will hit the ball. This will help us to rotate fully as we serve and will give us the best possible angle and spin on the slice serve. If we stay side on to the net on the slice serve, we prevent ourselves from using the full range of motion to achieve a perfect slice serve in tennis.

    This is one of the best explanations of hitting a slice serve, bar none. Simon explains not only where on the ball to hit (i.e., between 1:00 and 2:00 o'clock), but takes pains to differentiate between hitting around the edge, and - correctly - hitting on the front face in the 1-to-2 o'clock zone, after the racquet begins to open up (pronates). Too many videos on YT ignore this subtlety entirely. Well, done Simon.

      "But that is just a working mental image for the contact point on the ball in a slice serve."
      Yeah, no kidding.
      "Rather the REAL correct spot of the (first) contact on the ball should be somewhere nearer four or five o'clock and from there upwards or towards 10-11 o'clock."
      That's your opinion, period. Regardless of what AA may proclaim, an overwhelming number of pros and instructors advocate a 2:00 to 3:30 contact point. Crucial to understanding this range is that some players are tall enough to hit somewhat downward, while many cannot.

      Am I missing the part where Jack says this is for a lefthander? Unless I have forgotten how to read my watch, from 4 to 10 has you hitting from right to left. Pretty hard to do for a righty, unless you throw the ball MASSIVELY over your head and somehow hit a reverse kick. Impressive! Then you call the Guinness people, register for the World Record, and then promptly drive yourself to the hospital, 'cause you're gonna need major back surgery, and STAT!

    love the video simon, i like the explanation about what most coaches teach and why it is better to do it otherwise. Also it is very applicable from beginners level all the way to competition players. The comparison with flat , kick and slice serves in the end made it even better. Please do all videos like that from now on : D

I've learned more from them than from any other internet source. Just wanted to say thanks and keep up the great work. Really excellent explanation of technique and contact point for the slice serve!
    One thing about the single position ball toss. Pete Sampras is often cited as the finest example the single position ball toss for any serve technique. Yet in an article on serving which he did for Tennis magazine years ago, he mentioned that this was one of the most exaggerated stories about this game. He stated that even he used different toss positions since this helped to increase the degree of spin for each serve type. However, what was important was to keep it sufficiently close so that it was hard for opponents to get a read on it; ie: choose a balance between increasing the spin vs keeping the disguise.
    I suppose what he felt he did might not be what his opponents saw! Boris Becker certainly said on more than one occasion that Pete had one of the most unreadable serves he ever played against!

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  3 роки тому +2

      Sampras' toss was a rainbow shape, from the right side of his body to the left, in line with the baseline. He could make contact at various locations along that rainbow, keeping his toss the same for every serve yet allowing him the flexibility he wanted for different spins/serves

    The explanation and examples are insanely well done and I've been practicing the kick serve after watching this video yesterday in the afternoon.
    I'm not quite sure if I'm doing it correctly when it does come out. But, whenever it does go over the net it has this semi-high arc and quickly dips into a high bounce. Am I doing it correctly, or where am I going wrong if I am doing it incorrectly?

      That sounds good, a good kick off the bounce indicates good spin levels which is crucial for the high bounce that you want

    Watched this once again. You hit some killer slice serves as they were good pace and bounced into the side fence. Just about as good as Sampras who would go to that power slice and back it up with a killer volley ( if it wasn't an ace). This is the best step by step instruction for the slice serve. Even ATP players should refresh themselves with this. I watch a lot of ATP guys serve crappy slice serves that don't go short in the box and hang up in the returners strike zone and get crushed. As an ex pitcher in baseball it's exactly like a hanging slider that gets shit on.. Lol😮😢😂

    i like a slight eastern grip, and then adjusting the wrist a bit, before contact, to get the desired amount of slice.

  • @maxpowers3732

    Can you explain more about what you do right after contact? I was always taught to go around the ball at 3 and don't understand how approaching the ball on edge and then opening the racket face works. Wouldn't that lead to more of a kick if you're swinging from left to right after you make contact? How do you let your wrist snap after in a way that creates slice and brings the ball down?

    Thank you for being precise and to the point. Just a request that if as a ratio out of 3 videos could you focus on left handers as there are hardly any techniques taught keeping left handed players in mind.

    11:05 very true. Also, if the opponent is reading the slice, and moving to the right, you can still hit the slice down the T.

    I found a pat cash's video here in youtube ; he said that the trick is to change the grip from continental to eastern,for slice.

      I've also heard him say that you should drop your head prior to contact on the serve and that you don't need to watch the ball. Wouldn't listen to everything the guy says. . .

      @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial you got it nailed Simon! And I get it some great players will tell you the way some quirky way it works for them. But won't work for most . Mac stood side saddle to serve. Worked for him..... Probably the disguise and opponents not used to it factor.

    Great video as always. I have trouble making contact with the ball at the desired point, e.g., 3 o'clock, etc. Any recommendations to hit a specific point on the ball rather just making "general" ball contact?

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  Рік тому +2

      For the slice serve focus on the top right edge, if you imagine the ball as a flat image it would be easier to make contact there. If you’re trying to hit the side of the ball, it could become a problem

    Great Lesson. You might not get back to this question since the video is from the past but I struggle with framing my slice serve at times. Dumb of me to not be fully aware, but I am unsure if I am framing with the leading edge or the trailing edge. What am I doing wrong and what can I do to correct it?

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  3 роки тому +1

      Make sure you're really tracking the ball onto the strings, so keeping the head up for longer.

    Good video and you have a pretty good slice serve from the deuce court with very good placement and control.
    When I try the slice serve from the deuce court it goes in the doubles alley if not out of the court.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching. If your slice serve is going wide, it probably means you are hitting the side of the ball (3 o'clock) too much instead of the upper right hand side (1-2 o'clock). Try to change the angle of the strings slightly as you make contact and you'll see a difference.

      Whereas my natural swing tends to take the ball to the opponent's backhand, I struggle to slice wide to the forehand.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  6 років тому +1

      @transklutz - Try to open the shoulders more prior to contact and aim wider. Common issue is slicing the ball but staying side on to the net for too long. You'll get the slice but not the width.
