    Thanks Paul for this tip and all your other tips. Since I watched your clip about the effortless golfswing, a few years ago I immediatly wanted tot copy your swing because it looks so effortless. However it didn't work for me then because I was swinging too loose and could not put enough power in my swing even after watching your tips thousand and thousands of times. Then I changed to a tighter swing with stronger grip. It worked sometimes but there was no consistency and too much arm movement. After continously changing my grip and swing of course with a lot of range sessions and getting very tired of all the thinking and tweaking, I went back to the neutral grip and takeaway with a tiny bit of lag and late wrist set which I think you do too. The result is effortless dead straight shots (sometimes but not often a hook). No backpain, no thinking, less exercise and extremely happy. Thanks you so much. Greetings Jan Willem

      Update: took some lessons from a local teacher. He set me back to a strong 3 knuckle grip. It felt great at first, but I’m struggling with a hook and my driver is useless. In order to make it work I have to:
      1: Flare my left foot out
      2: make sure I tuck my right elbow and swing under for every shot.
      3: Rotate my hips hard.
      It’s all just too much to time everything perfectly. Some days it’s perfect, other days it’s awful. Pull hooks and pushed shots. Hit halfway through a round today after hooking everything into the woods and finally had enough. Switched back to a 2 knuckle neutral grip, and finished the round hitting it straight. Too many compensations needed. I’d rather just swing the club, and trust that the face will square.

    I took about a two year hiatus from golf and just came back recently. I binge watched a lot of your vids and really had fun trying to put my swing together again. My best round was an 86 (48/38) at Kapolei GC. Consistency has never been my middle name. I should've watched this vid before I played. I think my uber strong grip is what's killing my swing. Gotta get to the range to make some changes. Thanks for being my long distance teacher!

      Thanks for watching. Yes, get rid of the grip. At some point you have to think it is not working. The hand and wrists are a hinge. They hinge... they rehinge. With a strong grip you cannot have loose wrists. So let's fix that first and see how good you get.

      Well, too many people thinking this stronger grip is going to fix their swing. They slice it and do the strong grip. Then they finally kind of release it and it pull hooks so they think this strong grip is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Why not just do a neutral grip with loose wrists.

  • @georgesealy4706
    @georgesealy4706 4 роки тому +2

    Definitely, a neutral grip is the way to go. As Paul says, if the grip is not neutral then there has to be other compenstations in the swing in order to return the club to square at ball impact. Those compensations require more practice. The grip is the most important fundamental in golf. A player has to get it correct, otherwise they are doomed to lots and lots of bad shots.

    Both pga coaches I’ve had put me in the exact same strong grip. I’ve been terrible ever since but I’ve stayed with it for 6 months. I’ve been steep and hitting terrible fat shots. Broke clubs and hurt my arms bashing the ground. I switched to a neutral grip and opened the club face as suggested by a friend and have hit the ball the best and high and straightest in my life . I thought an open club face would cause the ball to go straight right but I’m dead straight and 15-20 yards farther. My pitching wedge has went from 120 to 140.

    • @paulwilsongolf

      I see this all of the time. Their thinking would be that if the person is slicing it doesn't it make sense to have the do a stronger grip? Well, I don't think this way. I try to get to the root of the problem.
      Who slices? Amateurs
      Why are they slicing? Try to hit the ball with the arms.
      Why does it slice? Hitting leans the body toward the target in the downswing. Hitting tightens the wrist so the face is held open.
      Why do people hit with arms? Human nature of trying to hit the object they are looking at. The harder they hit, the more they lean, the tighter the wrists.
      Why is a slice so bad? This is 2 things wrong. Wrong direction. Wrong spin.
      How do you fix it? You fix the spin first. Then the direction. You DO NOT do this by strengthening the grip.
      So you see, I ask the question that get to the root of the problem. They don't. Keep at it. I told you a while back I would fix you.

Maybe try to take 5-10% (or even 20-30% if you're on the range to really slow things down) off of your swing speed (or effort) and focus on the path and spin of the ball (and your grip and weight shift, etc.) to get back on track. You can do it!

    I am just committing to a neutral grip. My natural grip is a strong right hand too much underneath. I can hit low draws easily but as you said putting the ball back in my stance and holding off the release is what I have been doing. Feel that to take my game to the next level I need this change. It’s not the grip change itself that is hard it’s how it feel in the takeaway and backswing as the wrist angles change as the neutral grip feels weak. But I am determined to make the change. You are correct although loose wrists I find hard as it feels flippy to me.

    • @paulwilsongolf

      Changes can take a while. Change your grip and it can change everything. This is why they say it all starts with the grip. Glad you see the issue and want to fix it. You'll see the payoff in the future. Here is my neutral grip tip:
      ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html
      See the grip and wrists not as a grip and wrists. See it as a hinge. It hinges going back it rehinges down and through. So work it back and forth hinging and rehinging until your wrists loosen up. This doesn't take long to get used to. Then connect this arm unit to your body which is coiling and uncoiling.

    I noticed that my shots would start on line but turn over a little too much especially when I got to my mid irons like 6 and found it difficult to control my longer irons. I would crush my driver and fairway woods but those would overdraw on me as well sometimes especially 3 wood. I found out my right hand grip was strong so I put it in a neutral position. At first I started having trouble with squaring the face and solid contact. After using this grip a little squaring the face improved with irons but not with my driver and fairway woods. I hit slices now with my woods I can’t square face. Fat shots are still a problem they’ve improved but I still catch them heavy at times. At first my fat shots would only travel about 30 yards now when I catch them heavy I’ll get get enough ball to reach green sometimes it would turn out pretty good depending on pin location.

    Others like “Shawn Clement grip” are using strong grip because it provides more compression and is anatomically in a better position that the neutral. Strong grip is similar to a hammer or to knife if you want to go to the target through the ball and not at the ball. How do you get compression with neutral or weak grip????

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  4 роки тому +3

      If you do that grip and hit it straight it is because you locked your wrists. In doing so the shaft is way ahead of the ball creating the compression. Good luck doing it consistently without practicing. Now with a neutral grip you will get compression by having the right fundamentals in your swing. You set up on one angle. You hit it on a more tilted angle. That creates the descending blow. Need loose wrists too. I will be doing a tip on it soon. In the meantime you can watch this tip. I explains enough that you will get it: ua-cam.com/video/avE8KOSh_vs/v-deo.html In making a statement like that you would be saying that a neutral grip can never create compression. I compress it just fine so I have to be doing it somehow. Like I said in the tip, I don't want you to have to hit balls every day.

      Exactly yet people keep telling people to do a strong grip. Truly mind boggling what is out there. Your hands are not hands. Your wrists are not wrists. It is a hinge. Hold on tight so your wrist do not hinge and rehinge. That would be locked. Hold on tight then hinge the club to it's maximum at the top of the backswing and rehinge to a 90 degree angle into the through swing that would potentially be loose. Mine are super loose. So if you were to grab my club (which I always have students do) they swing it back and forth with zero resistance. Just like a hinge on a door. I have super strong grip and as result big in to out path, I’ve been playing 18 months and have got pretty decent but I still have a hook and block that can ruin a round ! I have committed to neutralise grip but feels so alien to me and I struggle with consistent contact and am really embarrassed at topping ball so I would used to rather make contact but hook so I don’t look as rubbish, but now if I make poor contact it is still straight and in play so I have made par with short game where as before it was out of bounds. I do get points where I feel completely lost but I played my best round yesterday only 9 holes and all par 3 but one par 4 and I got to the 9th hole level 😬 and pull hooked it into trees and made triple bogey 🤮 like you say it’s 2 swing faults and it’s always there you just don’t know when it’s coming and like they say no pictures on score card

      You are new to golf so it is the perfect time for you to do it right. Yes, changes take time. When students come to me and I change their grip they hit some shots right because they are used to a strong grip. I get them to hinge it back and forth and within a few minutes they are hitting it dead straight. So you need to place the grip on. Hinge and rehinge the club. Tee up your ball to make it easier. Then hit shots. See your hands and wrists as a hinge NOT hands and wrists.

    What if i use a strong grip but i still fade/slice the ball as my miss.... Would you promote this type of grip in my scenario?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 роки тому

      This would be you really tightening your wrists. I would promote a neutral grip to anyone. Strong is wrong. You cannot have loose wrists with a strong grip. If you do you will hook every shot. Then you will add another flaw/compensation. For you, start to neutralize your grip.
      Just start backing it off and slowly get it to more neutral:
      ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html
      Do these wrist drills until you are hooking it on purpose:
      Here are the drills (wrists):
      ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/5_O0H2QNFo0/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/Xk7t9yHCO-I/v-deo.html

      ua-cam.com/video/7olBqwXF3Ik/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/jEWe9Gaoqxo/v-deo.html
      Remember to roll it from the top to get it hooking. Forget direction. You only care about the spin. Once you can hook it on purpose your wrists are unlocked and working. Now you need to fix the direction. You do that here:
      Trigger: ua-cam.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/v-deo.html
      This isn't even going to take long. If you were standing in front of me for lessons this wouldn't even take me an hour to get you hitting it dead straight or with a slight draw. Just start working on this at home then apply it at the range.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому

      They are pros. They have other flaws or compensations in their swings which is exactly what I said in this tip. They practice constantly so they can time them and hit the ball on target. If you want to do a strong grip go ahead. Just realize that you will need at least one other flaw or compensation in your swing to get the ball back on line. If you're not prepared to practice a lot, then you will be inconsistent. Don't believe me? Take out your 7 irons. Tee up a ball. Keep your wrists super loose and hit it. If so, you will hit a massive hook. So why would you want to keep doing that? You wouldn't so you will add one of 5 flaws to your swing to straighten it out. Once you do, it will register what I was saying in this tip and you will see the benefit of a neutral grip. Let us know how you do.

      I would think you are not doing the grip right. I've had a few people tell me this in the past then I put the grip on where it should be and it doesn't hurt as the swing. Strong grip proponents state a strong grip is a more natural position. When one bends over and dangles their arms, they see the palm facing slightly inward and 3 knuckles ie. a 'strong grip' on their lead hand. Certainly this is true for me. I do not not see one or two knuckles ie. what would constitute a neutral grip. I actually have to consciously turn my wrists to see only one or two knuckles on my lead hand so this becomes problematic as this becomes yet something else I have to think about when completing the downswing.
