Good evening Shawn and Sav. I want to thank you for all the wonderful videos. My issue was week shots that did not go anywhere. Today is the first time on the range with this grip. My girlfriend walk up and said what happened. Your hitting sold shots and she could hear the ball take off. Day one gain confidence and 25 yards on each club. Over and over never hit a 7 iron over 130 yards. Today hit that same club 165 yards. Even my driver was maxing out at 220. Today first shot with the driver it flew the 250 flag and I lost it rolling. So I don’t know the total distance. Ok so bottom line is I hope you are happy to make a grown man cry. Tears a joy while smashing shot after shot with every club. The last 30 minute I hand my girlfriend just hand me any club she picked and still hit every ball on the face and felt great not to have t swing out of my shoes to get a greater distance. Tomorrow will be the test Terra Lago in indio. Get a chance look at their signature 15 hole par 3. Over water to a island green. Can’t wait to give it a go.

@@golflessonsShawn just for some clarity of the grip & set-up. I close the clubface in front of me with a neutral grip then I place the clubface squared behind the ball to my intended target line which then automatically has my hands in a strong grip position. In this set-up I then can just 'hammer' (hands hinge & unhinge) in a tilted plane so that I then can return to the ball without any roll of my hands or forearms nor bowing. I can just then 'hammer' up & down on a tilted plane back through the ball with no other wrist movements or manipulation.

@@mplunky1 NICE!!! YOU GET IT!!! Just one thing though; you never want to feel like you are holding off after impact; you deliver through the ball with the hammer and then well after the ball is gone, the weight of the hammer will release the arm anatomy; see “most important video on grip ever shawn clement” for some back up and on our premium channel, the videos you want to see are the “release” videos, the “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series” the “blur of club” and “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” the “match backswing to ball direction” video, and the “fade fine tuning” and “draw fine tuning” videos. You don’t want to feel like you have a “checked swing” beyond the ball.

@@golflessons just a question re hitting the driver with the ball position just forward of my lead shoulder & using the strong grip hammer action. Is it ok to think about releasing (unhinging of lead hand hammer) at the bottom of my swing arc with my lead hand thumb pointing directly down to the ground at this point in the swing so that you are ensuring a slight upwards path to the ball just in front of this position?. Also with my irons is it OK to think of my lead thumb also pointing down to the ball position into impact or is this too early to have my hammer fully unhinged (thumb pointing straight down) at this point. I am asking this because to me the 'thumbs down' is a very easy swing thought to have in my swing. I totally appreciate your advice about not holding off after impact so that you fully release the arm anatomy so that you are still accelerating well past impact.
I'm really making great progress with my ball striking & speed with this change (strong grip hammer action) & fully appreciate your advice clarifying this for me.

@@mplunky1 hey Plunky! You are way too focused down at the ball! You need to get a task that will get you through the ball and towards the target! See “grass whip training shawn clement” and use this task to whip the tip of the tee towards the target with the driver; and down worry about what it looks like! The anatomy places itself and you can’t micro manage the swing this way; it has been proven in science of motor skill learning THOUSANDS OF TIME OVER; we are Pinocchio without the strings! Don’t try to put the strings back on and return the perfect boy to a wooden flippin puppet!!

I’ve been following you for about 3-4 years & no other instruction. I’ve made some gains using your methods from tee to green only to take one step forward & two steps back. I am my own worst enemy, an over-thinker, a tinkerer, never leaving well enough alone. However, this video has clicked; after experimenting with various degrees of strong grips & closed faces, I’ve found it. The proper grip/face relationship is everything! Driving, woods, irons (long & short), pitching, chipping, everything! I feared I’d never find “it” but I have. After 8-9 years of banging tens of thousands of range balls & countless lessons from well-meaning pros, I’ve found it. I’ve watched many of your videos multiple times & unfortunately it took a lot of time & work for me to execute your instructions but here we are, finally. Thank you, Shawn for your passion for teaching & willingness to share it with others.

Thank you for the great video. I quit the game 15 years ago and toward the end of last year, l said why not. Started hitting balls and l was so sore hahaha from head to toe. Now l am out of it and learning a lot about the swing because back then it was very expensive to get a lesson but with your channel and others, we get free info and thank you. Last weekend l was at the range and decided to do the strong grip and WOW WOW WOW l was hitting the bee gees out of the ball. My 8 iron l was reaching 180 and this is without all these knowledge l learned from you and others since then. l have a very strong upper body and muscular and l can't wait to get back to the range with all these knowledge. l was a 5 when l quit and now after 10 rounds so far l established a 10.6 and looking forward to the single digit soon. The way l was doing it was that l dropped my hands straight below my chin and on my back swing l push down with my lead hand as l cocked the club up with my trail hand as l swing to the top and from the top l am set on an inside out path and l just pull with my lead arm/shoulder and open up my body at the same time. l had never hit the ball so good! Thank you for the wisdom.

Wow. I've been watching your videos for only a week and just went out and shot my best round ever at my local course! I am 51 years young and was a S&T guy who use to finish rounds with sore back, shoulders and forearms. Today I finished loose and refreshed. I found 6 bunkers today and nailed each one - lucky I watched your bunker video last night. My driver went from 230 yards to 275 yards and got straighter as the day progressed. Struggled a little with the fairway woods - I think I focused too much on the ground and not enough on my target. Happy days!

Right on Noah! It is so important now that you stick to a task in the direction you want to start the ball like whip grass clippings or divots into the direction of the flight plan with a momentum and ease and any “positional questions” you have must be answered with: Can I whip the grass clippings that way from here? And lo and behold, THE SWING MAGICALLY APPEARS! 👍👊😀

@@golflessons Thank you Shawn. Took your advice and headed off to my annual golf retreat with my mates and I was smoking them. Bombing drives down the middle and my irons were on the money. Had a couple of grip problems on day one which led to some hooks (was copying Sav way too much) - dialled it back a bit and bingo - had it on a string. I realised I wasn't turning enough on the fairway woods on the backswing, so I deliberately pointed my butt at the target on the way back and this gave me enough space and width to power those woods. It has only been 4 rounds but I feel like my swing has been "let out of the cage" after 20 years - free of tension, free of restrictions and my body has no more soreness after a round (use to have sore forearm, shoulder and side). Need to start working on my 40-70 yard pitches - do you have a particular video that tackles that?

@@golflessons Thank you thank you. I put that into practice over the weekend and the short game was amazing. I don't think I can attach screenshots on here, so here is the latest. Yesterday I shot 43 points and won the monthly medal! So at my local club (a top challenging course), I have gone 40 pts, 43 pts. I chipped in (it's been a while) and my short irons were deadly. My Australian GA handicap has gone down from 13.1 to 11.2 in just 3 rounds (am now an A-grader!). After 20 years of UA-cam videos with other teachers, nothing has had the impact that you (and Sav and Mu) have had. When I got into trouble yesterday, I simply took out the strain and thought "heavy arms". I think this is the "detox" thought for anyone coming over to your lessons because for so long we've been steering, hitting and straining so we need to do the exact opposite until it becomes natural. My head bobs up and down (never laterally) now and I simply don't mind because it WORKS! There is no soreness at all the next day as it is so effortless and natural. Keep up the great work guys!

Wow what a difference. I just got back from the range. Only took my gap wedge and my 7 wood. Using this grip and swing sure made it easier to hit ball first then glance the ground. My gap wedge was my 80 yard club. Now it’s my club for anything up to 110 yards. My 7 wood is a different story. Was my 165 to 175 club. After a few slow swigs and grip change a little on it. Now it’s carry is approx 185 to 190 and total yardage is a little over 205. Thank you Sav, Mo and Shawn for making it fun and easy to swing my clubs. Son I’ll be doing a gapping session at the range with all my clubs.

Hello Shawn and Sav, Thanks for all the great videos! This is one of great interest to me. I am nearing 70 years old and playing since my early 20's. I have not progressed in a steady way over the years in golf but rather have had specific sections of clarity where I would try something different, and it would work for a few months. Eventually, what I had would leave and I would be unable to discover what was different. Back around 1999, I had just purchased a slightly used set of ISI irons and was trying them out. I was never a big hitter and then an average 5 iron was about 175. So, I find myself in the right rough where I have about 195 to the front and 205 to the pin. The problem is that I have a tree right in my line of flight. I can't fly over it with a club I can hit 200 yards. I decide to hit a 5-iron hard and if I strike it well, it should at least clear the tree and leave me some hope to chip up and one putt. Instead of the usual neutral grip, I did something close to what you recommend here. At that time, I set up so when holding the iron out in front of myself with my thumbs straight up, the face seemed 45 degrees closed. The only difference was I played the ball off the instep of my trail foot and set up with this very strong grip leaving the face square to the target at address...it looked like Shawn at 8:31...the ball off the back foot. Another "sensation" I felt with this new swing was that the club path felt more straight up and down rather than around my body. Anyway, the resulting high slight draw cleared the tree easily and finished pin high just off the left edge of the green. This was a good 25 to 30 yards more than my normal 5 iron and much higher. I was maybe a 10 handicap at the time but spent the next 4 months shooting scores in the low 70's and hitting all my irons much further but somewhere I started doing something that changed the results. It felt the same but obviously wasn't. Unfortunately, I could never get that back!

Shawn - thank you! This really works. I played 9 holes immediately after watching this and what a change! Felt a bit strange at first on set-up (my brain was saying, "There's no way this ball is not going to pull/hook") but I hit every iron shot crisp, straight, and so much longer than normal. I landed a second shot 200m (218y) approach on to the green on a par 5 with my 5-iron. I still shot a 45, but that was only because I was hitting all short my clubs longer. I'll have to re-learn my lengths - but what a great 'problem' to have!

The only thing I still don’t get is when you say we collect the ball here and release it over there towards the target. You have shown slow mo video of the ball leaving the club face milliseconds after the strike as so why isn’t the point of impact where you need max speed so as to transfer max energy to the ball? Keep up the great work. I am spreading your name to every golfer I meet here in the UK.

thanks for the question Dave! look at the swings of Joaquin Niemann and you will see what this means! when serving a ball in tennis, or slashing through a bamboo shoot with a machete, the peak speed is never at impact; what transpires is a transfer of energy that looks like what you and others describe but it is done by thinking through the ball. see the video we did. month ago that talks about a new drill to get through the ball!

I adopted Shawn's strong grip and went from 150 yard 7 irons to 210. And no more pain. Plus more consistently straight. Really interesting concept but it can definitely take some concentration to perform correctly. If one does not tilt the spine as much as you show due to decades of repeating a swing with less tilt, and if one has a tendency to release a bit earlier so the handle is not as far ahead of the club face as you show, and if one has closed the face to hit the nail sideways as you show, then one is going to hit a massive hook. You may make contact right in the sweet spot, hear and feel what seems to be a great swing, but watch the ball go 30 yards left on a 110 yard shot. One has to make the grip and closed face changes that you so clearly and logically demonstrate, but there are still quite a few other changes one must focus on. Both you and Sav rotate the hips strongly and quickly. If one fails to do that to the same degree, again it’s hook city. But I am working on it because you make sense.

With your reply in mind, I spent an hour yesterday at the indoor range with Foresight launch monitor and screen working with a 9 iron and different grip and face combinations, neutral with neutral face, neutral with closed face, and strong with closed face. Ball speed increased a bit with each one. Not surprisingly everything went left with the strong grip closed face. I found I could get the ball to fly straighter with the strong/closed grip if I concentrated on imitating your swing, straight back with flying right elbow and shaft across the line, making sure to turn back fully, and keeping head behind the ball . Also keeping left wrist cocked in the snuff box manner you show and avoiding any tendency to fall back into bowing the left wrist. Will continue work in progress.

I do your lumberjack swing at the ball towards the intermediate target, then ground the club and square the face to the target whilst keeping my grip where it was for the lumberjack strike. Gives me the perfect strong grip.

Love this video. Memories of 5 years ago. Crazy closed face at address resulting in dynamic neutral to slightly closed contact. Anti slice.
Recently have been using stronger grip a la Sav , rather than crazy closed neutral grip ,to prevent hooks. (Slices have vanished as long as getting the ground is first feature of the downswing. ) Seems counter intuitive but mentally I feel it promotes more effortless compressive cut through the intermediate point with a nice loading of the leading foot. Eyes see the ball but brain has to commit to the momentum throw.
If this is the setup and plan it helps my tempo rather than trying to only correct tempo with aberrant set up/grip-club relationship. Comments? Thanks Shawn and Sav.

When I get the club face pointed to the sky I feel so powerful. The sensation I get is I’m about to slam a door as hard as I can. Even though the club face is considered closed at the top it feels like it’s open and ready to slam close on the golf ball with tremendous force.

  • @bobbys4327
    @bobbys4327 2 роки тому

Yup, right on! I have a strong grip and I have always thought it gives more power and I don't have to manipulate the club to square it up. I look at it this way, if I were to smack someone ( which I do not do) but if I did, the leading edge of my left hand ( I am right handed) would be stronger than the back of my hand and fingers.
I used to come over the top but doing the Premium and watching about a thousand or two videos I have pretty much killed the over the top. I think coming down from the top, karate chop, karate chop. Doing this helps me stay on an inside path and this keeps my left hand leading edge like a karate chop. Also it keeps my right hand palm up longer and my right wrist cocked longer.
All in all it is a strong position. Love your videos they have really helped me!

very limber wrists; they get very deep in the hinge like Phil and Bubba; and when I deliver through the ball, the right elbow delivers deep and shallows the club naturally and then the club face gets more dynamically closed; I would not say a word to a student who would do this and release through the ball naturally and who gets it squared without thinking.

Shawn when you say here after you have gripped it strong in the manner you describe then without any hand rotation 'just swing it to the direction you want to start the ball'...does this mean to just swing along your squared body line (feet, hips & shoulders) in a hammer hinge & unhinge action?. Am I correct in saying that I don't have to deliberately swing to 1st base to seek an in to out path. Just trust the grip & setup to hinge & unhinge hammering thru the ball?.

You mention ow strong grip with square face causes tension for that student who had rotator cuff issues, and he had a breakthrough with neutral grip and ultra closed face. But Savvy has no issues with strong grip and square face. Any addition thoughts on which method works better for different people? I have been using very strong grip, but do notice a different feel with neutral grip and ultra closed face.

New to the channel. You probably have been asked about this before. But it seems after watching this video that you are not really advocating a strong grip - at least not what a strong grip is traditionally taught. Which would be starting at address with a square clubface and simply sliding the hands over on the club into a strong grip. But rather as you are suggesting, starting with a closed clubface with a neutral grip and tilting back until the clubface is square. The grip on the club is really still neutral. This seems key to me. Curious to your thoughts as to why this produces better shots than simply starting with a square clubface and sliding the hands over into a strong grip?

As I have practiced swinging the club without the ball, my free flowing swing always had an open club face through and after contact. I am now in the process of switching to a closed club face.
Here is my question: what happens to spin numbers and decent angle with such a delofted club? Am I looking at this incorrectly?
    Cheers,
    Mike

Hey Mike! You are still looking at this STATICALLY instead of Dynamically! See “weak grip vs strong grip shawn clement” and “most important video on grip ever shawn clement” and “delofting the club through proper tilt shawn clement”

I have to ask a question that relates to reminder grips, how can you use reminder grips if you are trying discover which group an individual should be using? For example you mention a very neutral grip with a closed club face that one of your students was now using. Surely you cannot then use reminder grips on you clubs as it would be difficult to adjust your hands on a club with a reminder grip?…

Reminder grips are NOT optimal as you need to be able to adjust on a daily basis depending upon your body; we are mot robots and we need the ability to adapt at will!

I know you guys aren’t a review channel but could you maybe show playing the b21 callaway. It sets up a bit closed and I was interested in seeing some strong swingers. I can’t find any lefty demos where I live

They are dropping that line; I recommend you look at the new Rogues which have a “draw” driver in the line up; PHENOMENAL FOR LOW SPIN CAPABILITIES!! We have been testing it and low face strikes are coming out at 2100 RPM which I have NEVER seen before. They have a freakin’ winner here.

Thanks Shawn, great lesson, just double checking near the end of video you said turn club face in, then square it up... does that mean it squares up through the swing or when you set up at ball with your tilt

      I have this same question!

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  2 роки тому +1

Either or! However, for it to square up in the swing, you need to be delivering through the ball and into the direction you want to start the ball and never make the ball your target! 👍😀

Shawn you're channel is awesome! I live in Northern Ontario and if I'm in Richmond one day I'm gonna come and see you! Question ...
If we buy clubs off shelf with standard lie is that good for my height of 5' 11"" ?

    • @golflessons

That can work nicely; see the Ping static fit chart for 2020; make the wrist to floor measurement with golf shoes on and see what the chart says; it is accurate 99% of the time!

Hi Shawn, fantastic lesson as always. I KNOW that using a stronger grip with a closed face setup(hands closer to the left leg) helps my ball striking, the sound is just different, lower ball flight, longer distance etc.
However, I get into trouble where (1) on pure strikes with irons I will hook it like crazy 30~40 yards right to left and (2) driver tends to launch very flat and pulled to the left. Perhaps not enough preset tilt to the right?

Confirm that you are releasing to the right of an intermediate point first and that you are delivering the peak speed well past the ball; then confirm that your backswing matches the target (see how to match backswing to target shawn clement) if you can confirm that, then the grip-clubface relation is too closed!

The lead left hand grip to be strong how far over on the top of the shaft should it come, does the heel pad come over to the top of the shaft or over to the right side of the shaft?

Hello Shawn, are you now endorsing a neutral grip with a very closed face at address? Does the strong grip with slightly closed face get you to the same place at impact?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  2 роки тому +2

Either or! This is why we call it a GRIP AND CLUB FACE RELATIONSHIP. We deliver an action through the ball and into the direction we want to start the ball and see how it flies. Then we make adjustments when we see a pattern.

Shawn , you always have the right wrist in line , never bent at the top of the backswing ? Left wrist looks a bit cupped ?

Just trying to change to this strong grip, tilted setup method and seem to be having problems with heavy contact at times, when it's good it really good and feels comfortable to me but I can't figure why on occasion I get these chunky, ground first contacts.

I have been having problems with a strong grip, if I don’t close the clubface at address the face is open at impact, unless I bow my wrist. It works but I don’t like doing that so I’ve been trying to understand these videos on this

Shawn can this be used with driver if so do you close the face as much as with the iron.
Thanks for the excellent videos and relatable drills. Cheers

Some golfers more closed and some less closed; depends on your equipment. Irons are very different than woods. see “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement”
