You Need to Know this Shocking TRUTH About Your Grip to Hit Consistently Solid Golf Shots

  • This is a life changing golf lesson that will get you understanding one of the most important truths about the golf swing and your grip - and how to hit consistently solid, compressed golf shots. Your grip has a big impact on your golf swing and ball flight. This video will show you everything you need to know to hit solid golf shots with real buttery contact.
Most amateur golfers get into a poor impact position that causes them to hit behind the golf ball or hit inconsistent golf shots that fly all over the place. A lot of golf swing problems can be traced back to the grip. How you grip the golf club affects how you swing the club into impact.
Most golfers slice the ball because of a steep and/or over the top golf swing. To fix this problem, most players change to a strong grip. The problem here is that they fixed the grip when it's the golf swing that needs to be fixed. Essentially golfers put a band-aid on their golf swing by using a strong grip - but this strong grip prevents you from really compressing the golf ball. This video will show you what you need to do to really compress it by thinking about your grip and your impact position.
I made this video in response to the previous week's video "Don't Make This HUGE Grip Mistake (Most Golfers Get This Wrong)" because there were a ton of questions and comments. This golf tip fixes the confusion and gets you to understand why and how your grip is so important when it comes to ball striking.

Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

Now I finally know why Hogan played with a neutral left hand and weak right. I have played golf for 54 years so far and needed to solve the problem of a climbing handicap, now up to 10!!
I think this may be it. I have just reverted to this grip I first used in 1967 and the effect is phenomenal. Plus 10% average on distance, no.more hooked drives and the completely unexpected bonus that I should have anticipated; I can finally flight the ball again!!!

Firstly, I must apologize for getting a wrong first impression of Sagudo Golf. Been golfing for over 60 years, from a single to ham and egging it at 70. My initial viewings of your videos gave me an impression of a wanna be comedian who happens to be a PGA teaching pro. During the last 5 years I almost quit the game. My swing was self taught and only improved because I played and practiced every day for a couple of years, when I was in school. Anyway, before I quit, I promised myself to read Ben Hogan's 'Five Lessons'. This is where I realized you knew what you were talking about and that you simplified what Mr. Hogan was demonstrating, not necessarily saying. Just like Mo Norman, there wasn't high tech slow motion cameras and 3D simulators. So these legends could only explain how they FELT, not what was really happening, until you explained it. I'm back to COMPRESSING THE BALL and even shaping shots. P.S. I now see your humor, but more so, your ability to read your students and explain lessons in a way that we can UNDERSTAND them(for me, dumb it down). You're a good listener, interupter and eloquent communicator without being boring or too wordy(The Brits like to talk). Your lessons are on point and entertaining. I am now enjoying golf again. Mr. Sagudo, THANK YOU.

Apology not necessary but accepted nonetheless! 😎 I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are now resonating well with you.
With regard to Mr. Hogan and others of his generation and prior, you are spot on regarding the absence of technology and therefore our having to rely on what they communicated as their "feels", which are certainly unique to each of them individually just as our swing feels are to us. Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value and continues to do so posthumously. But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in his teachings, applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are obviously tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered.
Thank you again for your comment, keep up the great work, and keep enjoying yourself out there as that is ultimately what this should be all about!!

I am now watching more of your videos Tom, because of your humour BUT more importantly how easily I understand what you explain. Especially, not getting into a long drawn out talk when a few minutes will do. My teaching pro (Stack and Tilt) Dave, also makes this stuff seem easy and with just the right amount explanations for me.
I always had trouble with my grip. Going from too weak to too strong and back again. I never understood scooping the ball was caused by a strong grip until now. I have done it and been told I'm doing it by playing partners. Now I get it and just need to make it consistent.
Thank you for your videos and your time. Keep up the great work!

This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance Stack and Tilt swing system is designed to provide a lifetime of great ball striking, and since it is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everything in between, and inclusive of the best players in the world. I give all credit where it is due - including Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett for analyzing and interpreting the science, and to those who preceded them with their empirical observations of the game's best ball strikers and all their subsequent chalkboard number-crunching. I just do my best to take what they have built and convey it in my own simplified manner.

I went from fade/slices to draw/hooks/big hooks when I learned from you to keep the right elbow in more ... it helped me from coming over the top ... but I was definitely flipping through contact. I did have a very strong grip ... getting the grip to neutral has helped tremendously. Now more consistent contact and straighter with a gentle draw. Now I am working at the range to get more comfortable with a more neutral grip. I really like the way that the neutral grip keeps the club more closed on the takeaway ... it just helps set up the contact that I want from early in the swing. Thanks.

Hi Tom, this video is spot on. I have been playing for about a year. When I started I had some lessons, in the first lesson I was shown the neutral grip, but over the months (stupidly) my grip has got stronger and stronger to attempt to stop slicing, which of course was not grip related but more out to in. Now my in to out is much better I am pulling most shots left, and it's all because of the strong grip. Also, the section in the video where you hold the club in your left arm and swing is also spot on. I tried it in the garden, let the club swing slowly like a pendulum, hold the club in the left hand with a strong grip and I hit behind the ball, hold the club with a neutral grip and voila, I hit after the ball. Thanks for the video. Top man.

This has showed me that my transition to a stronger grip has resulted in me having more shots left of target. In order to compress the ball I set up my swing with the shaft in line with my left arm , with my hands over, if not ahead of the ball at address. This couple with an upright swing led to lack of space on the downswing and perhaps chopping at the ball. Though at 67 I’m still shooting around 84. Thanks for your no nonsense advice and lessons.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 роки тому

      That's some solid playing, Arthur!
Yes - if we really want to stick with that strong grip, then we do typically have to make compensations in order to make it work, and in doing so consistency can become an issue. However, as I regularly tell folks, let your ball striking be your guide.

Tom, I don’t even know where to start. First of all your videos not only are funny to watch and keep yah watching you have a great approach on how you teach, I honestly haven’t struck the ball this well for some time now, you nailed it with the grip, my swing as you stated doesn’t allow a strong grip and today I worked on and worked on and more neutral grip approach and it’s unreal the results it truly makes golf fun again, as some have stated relearning hasn’t shown up in score just yet but honestly know it’s around the corner, the swing and the feel of everything felt effortless, when you said a strong grip can wear on the body it’s so true, anyhow I really just wanted to say THANK YOU to you! I will continue to watch and support what you do!

Most welcome brotha, and I will definitely check those out, yesterday I played after being in the upper 80s and low 90s I shot an 83 (I left two birdies on the table 🤦🏻‍♂️) and after the round I honestly didn’t feel fatigued at all, in fact went to the range. but crispy chicken it is #mashed. This summer I believe is going to bring in my best scores
Side note I think one of the highlights of the day is the group I got paired up with said that sounded crisp and just helps validate and confirm that fundamentals are coming together
      Effortless who’d of thought
Game is not easy as it is
So being able to work on these few things already making the face come back to square and the driver I have never seen the ball struck so much in the sweet spot consistently
When I looked at the ground with strong grip instantly I knew that what you were saying showed the face not being there for strike
      Thanks again man!

I sincerely appreciate your kind and validating remarks, Allan!
Yes - with regard to the erroneous notion that we need to manufacture some type of a rolling or flipping "release", given the inability of most folks to spend sufficient time at the range to lock in the required exactness of this action this misguided thought has led countless golfers astray. It's not something that most pros are trying to actively manufacture during the split second that the clubhead is traveling a distance of approximately 6' from parallel to parallel at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The forearms will naturally "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but this should not be construed as a contrived move (although many a casual observer has gone down that rabbit hole). There really ought not be any active manipulation of the hands through the zone and attempts to precisely time any such rolling or flipping - which does nothing for swing speed - have relegated many an amateur to the vast abyss of inconsistency and frustration.
Thanks again for your comment and keep up the great work!

@Ron Keller - I'm glad to know that you were able to swing that wedge without pain! As for the strong grip, I don't have an issue with it - I simply want golfers to be aware of the tendencies.
Also, I'd like you to know that this is a very body-friendly motion as supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my students and online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.

I have always struggled with the narrative for using a strong grip on iron shots. I discovered years ago if I use a strong grip with my irons my shots went left. I compensated by aiming right. I recently starting using a more neutral grip with my irons. It was pleasing to see Tom's video validating my confusion. With my driver I use a slight strong grip. I've gained so much control and more importantly consistency after I modified my grip.

This video is very helpful. I have been using stack and tilt for the past few months and my average score has dropped to the low 90’s but I realized watching this that I haven’t been positioning my hands ahead of the ball. As a result I have had to move the ball back in my stance, which makes the contact point steeper, with a few chunky shots as a result. Just trying hands forward makes the whole swing so much more fluid….duh! Looking forward to my next round on Wednesday😀

I had my first lesson after trying to teach myself thru UA-cam videos. I've been utilizing a strong grip as well. I could crush my 7iron 200 yards when I hit it perfect. However dispersion was all over the place.

Definitely give it a try, and be patient with it because it will likely feel very weird at first. Also, make sure that there is no flipping action going on through impact. You may have needed this to keep the ball in play with the strong grip, but it definitely won't serve you well with a more neutral attachment. With a strong grip (eg Shawn Clement) the hands don't flip through impact, the forearms rotate after impact

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 роки тому

There's no timed rolling or rotating of the hands/arms in the swing system I teach. The result is consistently crispy compression, a predictable shot shape, and all the distance you will ever want, without the need for regular practice sessions to keep one's timing sharp. So while I don't advocate a strong grip for the reasons mentioned in the video, I'm certainly not saying that you can't play good golf with it. If that's your preference, then it's just a matter of being aware of the potential consequences and tendencies.
      Best of luck to you!

    Hi Tom,
From Kip’s Dad who now is your biggest fan.
I am playing the best golf of my life because of you!!!! Most interested in the topic today related to the slice. I have discovered that I am crushing it when I am sure to have my right shoulder down, scrunching my right side at impact. But when I was hitting an iron shot with less power exerted I tend to be less accurate and notice I am going right, from my wrist action opening the club face. For years I was thinking my occasional slice was from my swing path going over the top. But now I have discovered, with your help, it is mostly from my errant wrist action opening the club face.
My new focus on my wrist has taken me into the 80s. It feels so good!!! Can’t wait for my first round breaking into 70s. Thank you so much for your coaching.

I keep watching more and more of your videos and really appreciate how much you like to dive into the physics and theory behind the golf swing.
I’m a major scooper/slicer, and even when I do get good compression I’m taking a very minimal divot. I’ve had issues with compression since I started, with short bouts of getting it and hitting it KFC. My old golf instructor would have me strengthen the grip and start with my hands forward, but I felt like my arms got almost twisted trying to make sure everything is timed correctly. Seeing the neutral grip theory is a major lightbulb moment for me.

55 years old. After 5 back proceedures made the decision to move to the front tees. In my younger days I could play in the high 70 s to low 80 s but after so many issues with my back I couldn't do anything with the par 4 s and the long par 3 s and was scoring back in the 90 s. After trying just one of your tips I scored close to par from the upper tee. So I moved back a tee box and shot 88 and then 85. Unfortunately I have another back proceedure soon but that won't prevent me from watching every video you have. Thank you bud.

Sorry about your back issues, Michael, but I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style for this body-friendly, powerful swing are resonating with you!!
By the way, you may be interested to know that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner.
You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.
Thanks so much for your support in sharing your improvement, and I wish you all the best with your upcoming procedure.

Thank you for that wise and succinct assessment, @Bub Bu!! Physics and Geometry are truths. We can either choose to harness them as they are and thereby take full advantage of their combined benefits, or we can try to trick them in order to compensate for unresolved shortcomings. That's not to say the latter can't work, but my golf instruction will reside in the deposit of established natural laws until such time that God elects to amend them...😎

Thanks Pamela - I always appreciate your kind words and support! Keep working at it as your schedule allows, and when ready feel free to send in another V1 so I can have a look at your progress and identify areas that might need some attention.
