  • !987-1993 Jeep Wrangler YJ 2.5L with the AX5 transmission which came stock. YJ owners are aware of how issue prone these Combination Clutch slave/throwout bearing combinations are. In August 2017 I installed a new hydraulic unit, Clutch plate and pressure plate. By November the hydraulic unit (slave/throwout unit) was leaking once again through the bottom of the bellhousing. Midway throught 1994 and the last production year, 1995, Jeep changed to the external clutch slave unit. The internal unit requires you to drop the entire drivetrain to access the hydraulic unit inside the bellhousing.I have gone through the unit that came with my LUK clutch kit (Crown) and a replacement (Omix ADA). I am replacing the Omix-ADA with a BRUTE POWER/PERFECTION CLUTCH 360088 Clutch Slave Cylinder from Rock Auto. The components in the previous two units are plastic. I am trying the Brute Power unit this time as it is cast aluminum and brags that it is superior to the plastic units.

    So glad I found this video, you changed this out that many times, I have no words. I'm in the middle of going a different route in mine right now, it's videos like this that help put all the pieces together about problems like this.

    A note about me. I have been wheeling since my K5 Blazer I bought new in 1974. Currently I own three Jeeps. a 1992 YJ with the 4 angry squirrels, a 2008 Commander and a 2014 Jeep Liberty. I am NOT a mechanic by trade. I am determined to do as much of my own work as possible on my YJ. I have learned from UA-cam and the advice and help of friends and members of my Jeep Clubs. When I bought my YJ I only owned woodworking tools. I have had to buy a wide assortment of mechanics' tools to modify, maintain and repair my YJ. It sure has been a learning experience and I enjoy tinkering with it very much!

      Jimmy,
      I know this video is 4 years old, but I am just beginning my own journey into wrenching in the garage. I am very intrigued and enamored by guys who can fix their own rigs, my brother is a Wyo-tech trained mechanic who has built several bad-ass wheelers, from Jeeps to K-5 blazers. He lives several states away and with the advent of UA-cam, I am getting more adventurous in my own challenges. I have found planning and good/right tools make all of the difference. I recently bought a very well taken care of and souped up 93 YJ. Until I saw your video, I thought all YJ's had a external slave cylinder. I ordered everything yesterday and will pick it up today.
      my question to you is this, 1) what is the best one to buy so I don't have to do this more than once 2) have you ever heard of changing out the system to a 94-95 in order to have an external one moving forward?
      if you still get this years later, any help would be greatly appreciated, if not, I just wanted to thank you for the time and effort you put into sharing this video with the rest of us.
      Cheers

      @@jamiegapp3298 Thanks for the kind words. I hope all my videos help someone, sometime. I have a passion for Jeeps and own 4. 2 YJs, a CJ and a 2008 Commander.
      I began wrenching on my Yellow 92 YJ when I bought the stock Wrangler for $2850. I had a $5,000 budget and was amazed at the multitude of upgrades I could buy with the leftover $$$. My deal with myself was that I would get whatever I wanted as long as I could do the work myself ( or at least with some help). I've had a blast with it. I know 10 or 12 other leaf spring mafia people who have helped me through my journey.
      The internal slave is a weak spot and I had to buy a 1994 bell housing plus all the internals to convert. It was not near as difficult as I imagine. It was scary the first time I dropped the Trans, transfer case and drive shaft. Just watch the UA-cam videos and say questions about anything you don't understand. Take your time.
      The clutch and pressure plate were amazingly inexpensive. Buy the best one you can afford.
      My tools are all Harbor Freight. That is my biggest regret. Buy the best tools you can. They DO make the job easier.
      Rent things like a transmission jack. I used an ATV lift my brother had.
      This all is not rocket science. These Jeeps were made 30 years ago. By men who were 50 years old when they built them.
      I own my old Jeeps because I cant deal with the computers and electrical systems post 1996 autos have. Our Jeeps are very intuitive to work on.
      Have fun and post your progress. When I upgraded my clutch and slave unit I never looked back. Write again and let me know if you have any questions.

    Jimmy, thanks for taking the time to make the video. Did the Brute Power hold up or did it have the same issue as the Luk and Omix?

    • @jimmyhaller7187
      @jimmyhaller7187  5 років тому +1

      I experienced the same issue with the Brute Power. The issue seems to be that the "bellows" over extends and allows the actual throw out bearing to come loose and then the leaking begins and shortly after, complete failure. I have spoken to several manufacturers who have stated that these "hydraulic units" were made for Ford Mustangs and others and are sold as a "fit" for the AX5 transmission. But they are not a good fit and I am told they need to be shimmed out from the front bearing retainer plate in order to keep them from overextending.

      @@jimmyhaller7187 Thanks for this. I have my 1990 yj Wrangler in the shop as we speak. I bought it 2 days ago and it had just had a new clutch pressure plate, bearing , slave cylinder etc. installed. This is one of the reasons i bought the beast. After 2 days of street use I pushed in the clutch and heard the pop and peddle to the floor. Not one month old. I am ordering a external slave kit from a company out of Cali and am hoping the shop here will put it in correctly. I am a senior and no longer have the tools or patience to do it myself. From what I understand is Mopar no longer makes the slave cylinder and the after market ones are all junk. The only true fix is the way you did it. I imagine you're a happy camper now?

    UPDATE: In August 2018, I changed out the bell housing and internals from my 1992 AX5 hydraulics to the more modern and MUCH more reliable 1994 bell housing with EXTERNAL clutch slave and throw out bearing, fork, ball, retainer spring and front bearing retainer plate. The old design was simply not supported and was no longer tenable.

      So you kept the ax5, but just replaced the bell housing and internals, correct? My slave cylinder just went on my 89 with the ax5, may go this route rather than keep dropping the trans to replace slave cylinders.

    Jimmy, I have a 1990 YJ and would like to convert the bell housing from a 1990 to 94/95 so I can have an external slave but I don't know the pitfalls you encountered. Can you help?

    • @jimmyhaller7187
      @jimmyhaller7187  5 років тому +1

      Michael, it was more of a matter of getting all the parts and pieces you will need together. You will discard your internal throw out unit, your internal throwout bearing, and hydraulic lines. You will need: New bell housing (94-95), clutch fork, ball and spring, front bearing retainer plate and a pre-bled clutch mast and slave (with hydraulic lines obviously). Then it is just a matter of assembling everything and mating your new bell housing back up to your clutch. I found a couple surprises (but they were financial). Those were the fact that sourcing a front bearing retainer plate was about $150 from Quadratec and the pre-bled master and slave was $160 from Morris 4x4. Other than that it goes together very easily. Good luck!

      My thought process is that since I have a slave cylinder leak and need to open it up to replace the slave, it makes since to change it to an external if I should have a similar issue in the future.

      Where the inspection plate meets the front of the bell housing is where I noticed my leak, It was simply losing fluid from the hydraulic unit and was draining out of the bottom of the bell housing. Are you having to constantly top off your clutch master resevoir? If so, you are losing fluid somewhere. Is the DOT3 fluid running down the inside or outside of your firewall? Is it leaking from the hydraulic line connection near the bell housing? I know I was taking IN air from a bad master originally when I changed out the clutch.

    • @MrJeepin88
      @MrJeepin88 5 років тому

      Jimmy Haller hey I know it’s been a while but no it’s not leaking any fluid and it will not disengage at all now .I’m going to have to put it on on the lift and drop the trans. Again I just don’t understand how it’s not disengaging I’ve bleed it and replaced the master cylinder too
      Do you have any thoughts on it?
