And you’re GETTING IT, you little crybaby. Are we just going to ignore Naoe like she isn’t also a protagonist? A Japanese protagonist??
If only we had a video game where you can play as a Japanese. Sadly, we are still waiting for.
The developers say, ``We made the main character black so that the world can accept him,'' but this is the same as saying ``Japanese people cannot be accepted by the world.''
That is racism against Japanese people, and it is a very cruel, uneducated, and shallow way of thinking.

Also the majority don’t represent the nation, culture and history.
The ongoing editing war on Yasuke's Wikipedia page is absolutely hilarious.
Like bro, Akechi himself said that the Black slave wsa an animal or monster of sorts and is not Human nor Japanese. That is a historical reading of it and it amazes me they chose him out of someone like Yamauchi Taka who is an actual historical legendary Assassin under Hattori-sama in Assassins Creed Lore.
@@pilotman9819 Mark Kern has been posting about it and apparently someone who was a writer for the original story released details about it.
If this is all true, the original story was really cool AND left room for Yasuke to appear as a supporting historical character.
I don't know why anyone would be surprised that people are pissed the two protagonists aren't Japanese. It took Ubisoft forever to set an AC game in Japan, even though Japan was an obvious pick because shinobi.
Instead of a Japanese guy, they picked a flash in the pan Yasuke who wasn't even a minor player in Japanese history, let alone a major one.
@@dksoulstice6040 Man, they already had the perfect one in the Lore with Taka.
So very little, like insanely miniscule was written about Yasuke that this is outright historical revisionism going by so many people thinking there was an actual Black Samurai.
I don't get it. Why must Asian History be used like this when there was many other legendary figures and even ones in the lore already.
@@pilotman9819 This same nonsense happened a few years back when Netflix made their Yasuke series.
People who likely know very little about Japanese history glorify Yasuke and attempt to elevate his position in Japanese history from momentary curiosity to legendary samurai. Just because he was Black.
Japanese history is filled *to the brim* with genuinely legendary figures. To have the first historical protagonist be a nobody is really lame. We waited nearly 20 years for AC to head to Japan, and this is what we got. And it's not like we can expect the AC series to stick around in Japan after this.
@@dksoulstice6040 you guys act like AC main characters are all real and the games are 100% history
As a Japanese, I can confirm that Yasuke is not even mentioned in the Daimyoki(大名記) which record the names of all samurai and retainers under control, including those who made no notable contributions. Yet, they still declared him a samurai.
Our culture is rich, with many stories and notable figures known only to the Japanese. This game could have been a bridge to share that richness, but instead, they chose to focus on a figure like Yasuke, who is barely known and not mentioned in our historical texts, seemingly to serve their own agendas.
We are already aware that other cultures have started casting black individuals in roles that are traditionally preserved by other countries, seemingly just for propaganda purposes, such as the mermaid and Cleopatra. Now, it seems our culture is not being spared; they are merely using Yasuke to push a specific narrative, which is simply common sense.

In the game description of UBI, it says -a real-life historical samurai, Yasuke-, but to avoid any misunderstanding, this is not true.
There are records of Oda Nobunaga and his vassals, and among them there was certainly a black man named Yasuke who became a vassal,
but there is no record of him being actively employed in battle. .
In the first place, those who do not make a mark in battle will not be given important positions in the samurai society.
Also, if an anonymous person achieves success and gets promoted, he is recognized by his lord and is allowed to call himself a ``family name'' as a samurai,
but Yasuke was never given a family name.
Therefore, Yasuke is not a samurai, but just a ``miscellaneous soldier''.
That is enough for Ubisoft

Rather than whether Yasuke was a samurai or not, it is more problematic to hear the baseless rumors that "Yasuke was mistaken for Daikokuten," "Yasuke beheaded Nobunaga," "Yasuke was respected by Mitsuhide," or even worse, "A proverb that does not exist in Japan, “For a Samurai to be brave, he must have a bit of Black blood," “sakanoue no tamuramaro was black” and so on. It is more problematic that there are false stories being spread without any evidence. It's not that Japan is hiding its history or anything, it's just speculation and fabrication without any evidence, and it's a complete false story that can't even be put on Wikipedia because there is no source.
There is no Black man that has ever visited the Sinosphere.
As a Japanese, I thought this as soon as I saw Naoe, prepared as Yasuke's partner or guide, with a short haircut and a Western-style hood. Maybe this game was made without regard for Japanese traditions and customs.
Naoe is supposed to be a woman who works as a Ninja, but in fact the terms Ninja and Shinobi (meaning "one who perseveres and hides in the dark") are new in Japanese history, and the two terms only began to be used in modern times. Kusano mono, Rappa, and Suppa were used in Japan when Yasuke arrived.
Kusa no mono means a person who, like a weed, is inconspicuous and assimilates by imitating the dress and gestures of the people he is hiding out with, and who seeks out and finds information about them.
Rappa also means a thief who disturbs and confuses the hiding place, and Suppa means a thief who quickly steals information.
In other words, professionally, Naoe should be in a position where she must devise ways to avoid standing out above all else and make an effort to assimilate into her surroundings.
However, a woman living in a temple in Japan at this time, or a woman other than a pre-adult child, who wears her hair short like this in her daily life, would be perceived by those around her as an odd person who disregards laws and customs, and a woman walking around town in the daytime with her hair like this, as if she did not care about anything, would have been very conspicuous in Japan at that time. A woman with this kind of hairstyle walking around town in the daytime without a care in the world would have stood out so much in Japan at that time that she would not have been able to fulfill her Ninja (Shinobi) duties perfectly.
Moreover, the traditional Japanese headdress was completely different from the Western headdress, and had a variety of shapes and detailed meanings, as it was a form of decoration that indicated a person's status, occupation, and age.
(Incidentally, up until about 170 years ago, hairstyles and ornaments in Japan were also traditionally defined by status, occupation, and age, and there was a wide variety of styles that could be distinguished in a moment's notice.)
In Japan at that time, the short haircut was the haircut of a pre-adult child or a woman who had become a nun by hiding out in a temple to comfort her deceased family members or loved ones.
Ordinary women would let their hair grow long, tie it up with a string, and wrap a hood or towel around it in a different style than in the West.
This is the traditional Japanese way of dressing for women, which appeals to a sense of fashion and cleanliness.
If a Japanese person of that time had seen what Naoe and Yasuke were wearing, he or she would have thought: "What is a traditional headband? I've never seen such a strange-shaped cape that doesn't indicate identity, occupation, or age. They looked like very suspicious people. We should report her to the elders or people in the lord's castle because we are afraid of some dangerous incident. It would be terrible if the safety of the village or town were to be compromised by her or that unfamiliar foreign man. The two men are very strange and oddly dressed, but where did they come from and who are they?
To be perceived as such by the people around the hiding place is a very fatal and basic ignorance for Ninja (Shinobi).
Moreover, if a person of African descent were to walk around town in Japan at a time when the country was closed off from the rest of the world for so long that there were almost no people from neighboring countries such as China, Korea, or even Russia, people would remember him or her as someone they had never seen before, wearing only a hood that would easily reveal his or her face.
It was very conspicuous in Japan at that time that Yasuke, who was only given the status of a follower to hold the parasol of a famous warlord or a fan to blow air on a hot sunny day, was wearing the armor and armors of a Samurai, a warrior.
Such an act is like a foreigner who is unaware of Japanese customs and social codes, and who is informing the Japanese people that he is an intruder who has come from a foreign country on a secret mission.
This would not look like Assassin at all.
The setting of the story seems to have collapsed from the start.
This is why the Japanese are reacting with discomfort and surprise to this game.
True to the meaning of the title Assassin creed, the production staff should have recreated the Japan of that time.
Looking at the actions of Naoe and Yasuke, it does not look at all as if these two Assassins are assimilating into Japan and acting in the dark.
The clothes Naoe is wearing also look continental.
Why is she wearing a traditional costume from Mongolia, 3,000 km away from Japan (so far away that even today it takes a long flight of 4.5 to 5.5 hours to reach Mongolia from Japan)?
The shape and method of making Kimono is completely different from that of the Japanese traditional costume, so if a Japanese person were to wear it in Japan at that time, people would say, "Where did that woman come from, and is she a Japanese? What did she come back to Japan to do? If a Japanese person wore a Kimono in Japan at that time, she would look like "What did she come back to Japan to do?
It is also quite strange to see cherry blossoms (flowers that bloom in spring) and Japanese pampas grass (a plant that grows from summer to fall and is used in traditional Japanese autumn festivals) together in the scenery in the game.

That black guy was never a samurai. Yasuke (弥助 or 弥介) was a man, likely of African origin, who served as a servant and retainer to the Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga in 1581-1582, during the Sengoku period. He was retained by the daimyō as a koshō (小姓, page) for a period of 15 months until Nobunaga's death in the Honnō-ji Incident.

Among those whose names have been ascertained, he is the earliest African to appear in Japanese historical records, but his confirmed period of stay in Japan was very short - about three years, from 17 August 1579 to 21 June 1582.
It is important to note that despite popular myth and modern depictions there are no historical writings nor evidence that Yasuke was ever granted the rank or title of samurai, he was never given a fief nor referred to as one in any writings. Depends on the story they’re trying to tell. It’s not about having one protagonist or multiple protagonists being good or bad respectively, but it’s all about execution.
On one hand, shinobi-samurai did exist, such as Hanzo Hattori (for that matter, I suppose it should have been Naoe, given that Ubisoft has otherwise kept their historical characters in NPC territory). On the other, the developers for this game were the ones behind Assassin's Creed Syndicate, which also had dual protagonists.
This is the first reasonable thought I've seen on this game. Thanks for that.

So now we know what's up, Yasuke was "retaining" Nobunagas "sword" in his special place
Despite my interest in this game, it's worth keeping in mind that Yasuke was NOT an actual samurai, but was kept as a retainer and as nobunaga's "pet". Despite him fighting in a war, he only played a small part of it and when Nobunaga was betrayed, Yasuke was kept as a prisoner after surrendering and sent back to the spot he was traded from in the first place. Again, I'm (cautiously) interested in the game, but of ALL the historical figures in Japanese history you could've had as a playable male lead with the historical evidence to back them up, you instead choose a figure whose records are mostly vague and sparse at best. Ubisoft please do better than this next time.

I think the same and I am European. You finally make a game of the franchise in Japan and you put a black man as the main character. Yes, it was true that he was there but only for one year serving Oda Nobunaga. And he really was not a samurai, but a weapon bearer. There are not even records that speak of him participating in open field battles. Which I doubt. The issue is that it seems that in the West, Western companies always have to put the predominant Western culture, currently the American culture, even before other cultures such as in this case the Japanese. Full-fledged cultural colonialism.
