MKIII Shelby Cobra by Superformance - THE best sounding car I've driven !!!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2021
- Having only just recovered from my drive of the Superformance GT40 and was given the key to another iconic car from the film Le Mans 66, the MkIII Cobra. Although in the film they used MkII Cobras and this is the MkIII it was great to have the connection with the GT40.
This car is sanctioned by Carroll Shelby himself and is a modern restomod of the classic Cobra, powered by the modern Ford Coyote 5.0L V8 and is quite simply the best sounding car I have ever driven.

Thats awesome, it makes a noise the Germans and Italians can only dream of.
It makes a sound like a muscle car, because that is what the engine is. Nothing exotic, just rumble. Not that rumble can't sound ok.
cross-plane vs. flat-plane - as a very much, red blooded American, I appreciate both, but vintage muscle has a home in my heart as that's what I grew up with.
‘Merica 🇺🇸
That exhaust note should be sold as a relaxation CD. 😁
Seeing one of these burbling past the end of the road when I was a boy is what got me into cars in the first place. Still magical.
Love that 👍
Unbelievable piece of kit.
Mega thing 👍
What an epic sublime piece of machinary...reminds me of that great movie "the gumball rally" back in "76"...a masterpiece of a car and then some!!!!
The race up the (so-called) L.A. River against the Ferrari was epic! It seemed like they had to sandbag the Cobra so it wouldn't pull so far ahead of the Ferrari. Once they hit the streets, the Cobra just took off and left the Ferrari in the dust...
what a absolutely beautiful machine
Indeed 👍
I've owned over 70 cars and one of my favorites, out of all of them, was my 1962 Austin Healey 3000 Mk 2 with the triple carb setup (one year only), white with black coves, red interior, black soft top, black hardtop, silver wire wheels .... lovely car. Drove it for three years while I flew jets for the RCAF, then took it back to Montreal where it proved impractical for the harsh Quebec winters. Sold it to someone in the states. Still loved owning it for five years.
Awesome 👏
Thank-you for your service, and then as Petrol Ped wrote,..."Awesome"!!!
My Dad had a TR3 in the Sixties, we had it up until my brother was born in 1972 (I was born in 67) was such a fun car!
Awesome story fam
Thank you for an amazing soundtrack!
That is seriously bad ass, what a sound, man green so green
Proper Bad Ass 😂
Had a smile on my face throughout the entire vid, thanks for sharing.
What a great looking and sounding car!
👍
Worth the wait that one, great video ped. Awesome car and that sound is just incredible
Thanks Adrian 👍
I built my Cobra replica between 1988 -1992 and drove it as my daily driver until selling it in 2002. Wonderful experience and even with a slightly warmed up Windsor 302 producing maybe 320 hp and a Borg-Warner T5 transmission there was plenty of vooma to play with! It was totally tractable around town as well but fuel consumption was impressively high! 18 litres per 100 kms around town, 25 ltrs/100kms open road cruising at 3500rpm/180 kph on one trip of 300+ miles between Johannesburg and Margate!
Sounds cool. Why did you sell it?
@@cameronpoole Mainly because I needed to raise money for a business venture. However that was not as successful as hoped, so ultimately it was not such a good move at all! On balance I would rather still have the car sitting in my garage at home!
Great presentation of a great car and great people! The enthusiasm is real!
Thanks 👍
Great video Pete, really enjoyed that, and the driving experience really came over very well on camera, utterly brilliant my friend 👌👍
Thanks Nick. I was so worried the audio wouldn’t work and was relieved it did 👍
One of the three Ameican cars truly masterpieces in motor racing, the Shelby Cobra 289 and 427, the Cobra Daytona Coupe, and of course the Ford GT 40! the most beautiful American racing car ever, all three creations of the same man , Mr Carroll Shelby, what a man! Thank you Petrol Ped!
Hopefully by the end of the year I will have driven all 3 😬👍
I have had two of the three will get gt40 superior acne one day soon after my panthera
Actually both GT40 and Cobra were British designed and manufactured
@@jase6370 Yeah Carrol Shelby took a base model and had his team modify the hell out of it. but far from an "American made" race car.
He had a simple formula for winning.
1. find the lightest car you can find.
2. find the biggest engine that will still fit.
then figure out how to stop.
That's what a V8 should sound like. Just rewatched and run it through the Yamaha a/v amp like watching a film, the sound is making the glass in the window vibrate. 😁.
Good job 👏
Excellent...
It sounds like it will distroy anything on the road. Great video and camera work.
🍻👍🤘
You were right what an awesome car. The sound of the thing absolutely stunning....
WHAT A TEST DRIVE!! Stunning machine!
Thanks Joseph 👍
That is a proper car.Great drive and yes,a great noise too.Thank you.
My pleasure 👍
This could have been a podcast and I'd have still enjoyed as much! Hearing your excitement for the car and that incredible engine made me smile! Another good day at work for Petrol Ped 👌🏻
Thanks buddy 👍
Seen this video a few times and still keep coming back to it
Awesome 👏
The perfect sports car.....sublime sight and sound.
This was fun watching you have so much fun lol. Luv this channel
Thanks Robert 👍
I'm from Massachusetts. Whenever I go to the local modified races, I hear 20-30 cars making that sound all at once. In my next life, I'll get one of these. Thanks for an outstanding video.
That sounds very cool 👍
I enjoyed watching the Video. The best Corba Engine Sound ever
Had to watch this twice it sounded so good through the headphones..Wow!
Great 👍
Love the video and the sound quality seemed really good felt like I was in the car. Would love to drive one of these and the perfect antidote to modern cars especially electric silence
I was so worried about picking up the sound without wind noise 😬
AS YOU START THE ENGINE, IT TOOK ME BY SURPRISE . THE SOUND 💖 WAS MIND BLOWING. SIMPLY AMAZING.
I had to get in it off camera to move it to where we filmed. When I started it it just blew my mind 😯
What a true gent Oliver is, hats off for bringing those beasts to the channel. 👍
I’m sure it’s not the last time he will be on the channel 👍
Thank you 😊 was all down to Petrol Ped being a top chap and good driver!
What a weekend you must have had, first the GT40 and now this. Fantastic sound - WOW ! 🤩 👍👍👍👍👍
Oh yes 👍
the noise ! epic car, excellent reviewing
Cheers mate. It ticked every box for me 👌
My dream car! The sound of that coyote engine coming thru the side pipes is the best mechanical symphony ever! Thanks for a great driving video.👍
Thanks Gerald. I’m just so chuffed I managed to capture the sound OK 👍
You got me the second you started it! OMG that rumble!
Oh yeah 😜👍
What a car! That soundtrack is epic! Will never forget being overtaken by a Cobra just outside Warminster many, many years ago - big long stream of cars and it went past the lot! The best bit was the M3 trying (and failing miserably!) to hang onto his coattails!!! Looking forward to the Daytona vid already 😜😍
LOL 😂
OMG Peter, another utterly epic car 👌🏻 what an absolute beast and another dream car of mine. Fantastic to hear the story behind it and that Carroll Shelby loved what they were doing.
The noise is awesome and I’m sure so intoxicating. Can’t wait for the next one 😉👍🏻
Very intoxicating 👍
I drive mine almost everywhere possible when it's nice out....so many compliments and thumbs up wherever I go...
👍
A Cobra has been my wish list car since I was a kid. Test drove a Superformance 427 Cobra very gently a couple decades ago, but couldn't pull the finances at the time. Now I see one with the same engine I have in my Mustang GT convertible; love that car! Still want a Cobra, but the Mustang is so much easier to get in and out of and I'm grateful for that.
You could count on the fingers of 1 hand the number of cobras I have ever seen. Absolutely love the looks. Reviews like this is why I subscribe to the channel.
Thanks Owen. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Side pipes are great and my daughter after more than 25 years still has the burn scar on here leg and wears it with pride. I have owned five AC Cobra replicas. Mainly AK and a Dax. All with Big V8 motors. Sold my last one 18 years ago and will always miss it.
A good way to remember the car 😂😂
Thats amazing information about Superformance: ua-cam.com/video/RQ5karO2PaM/v-deo.html
Suddenly twigged where you were driving (when you went past Worth Abbey School) , some great B roads round there 👍🏻
Thank Pete for sharing rare petrol head contents!
My pleasure 👍
Love this car, great review! Definitely on my bucket list
Thanks 👍
Love that sound. It’s loud but throaty, not raspy.
My ultimate dream car.
Same here man, found out they're actually a pretty affordable dream car. Hope I beat you to it😉
Nice video Pete, reminds me of my old replica Cobra I bought in 2012 and ran it for about 4 years and sold it for what I paid for it. As near to free motoring as you could get save the fuel. Every drive was an event, even just to fill it up which back then cost near £100 but the looks, sound, questions from other motorists etc. However, it was not a practical car by any means, a fair weather only driver. Still miss it and when I see others on the road I always think one day I will have another.
What a sourd…or better i say what a incredible melody…huge thanks for sharing this moment 👍 always on the top 👍
Haha! Yep, I use subtitles a lot of the time and they said "Music"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
My pleasure 👍
Superb cars Pete ,Olivers mum helped my wife for many years with RDA .
Oh wow. I used to volunteer for the RDA 👍
Hi Ian, hope you and the family are all well. Do send my love.
Ped honestly this is the car of my dreams. Honestly when i win the lottery that's what i want. What a thing
It’s now also the car of my dreams 😂
Absolutely lovely sound good job.👍👍👍
Pure perfection 👍
What an amazing car and sound more more more please 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I’ve got a feel for these kind of cars now 😜👍
Love these. Dream car
Wow that does sound epic !!! What a crazy fun ride and Oliver is a true car guy 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🍻🇨🇦
Epic in every way 👍
Thank you 😊
I think that smile said it all. What an incredible machine! Thanks for a cracking video Peter 👌👍
I am still smiling. My favourite car so far 👍
@@PetrolPed for a more 'everyday' option, try a pre Cat 4.3 Griff with ITBs :)
Wow great video! Cheers from the Finger Lakes!
Amazing car. A open convertible cobra is my dream car and i did watch this video till the end. I can never get enough of the cobra. I can spend hours just looking at builds and engines for the kit car cobra. A true petrol head dream.
Oh yes 🙌
My favourite car of all time ever since I was a child in the 1970s. This would be my first purchase for my 5 car garage if I win the lottery.
Great video on a great car 👍 why do American v8s sound so awesome. ❤️
It sure sounded awesome 👍
my sentiments exactly .
US V8s have cross plane cranks, necessitating an asymmetric firing order, which creates the "burble". Flat plane V8s (Ferrari, M3 4.0 V8) have a symmetric firing order, so can rev higher, but don't burble. Cross plane V8s are lower revving but more torquey, because a cylinder fires every 90 degrees of crank turn, rather than every 180 degrees of crank turn for a flat plane. Merc V8s are cross plane, which is why C63s sound fabulous, and why they are the closest European V8 to US muscle.

@@johnosullivan2017 Thanks for the info.
I currently own a cls55 AMG with the super charged 5.5 M113k pre 6.3ltr. probably a different sound to the 6.3 but deemed a bit more reliable for the price bracket I could afford anyway. You are right in saying they are European muscle cars but the the American V8s are still the best. Any V8 is better than no V8 though.
I agree totally with your choice. Shelby Cobra and the Austin Healey 3000. I am pleased it seems you will get to fulfil your dream of driving both... me, unlikely. However, the soundtrack to this video was amazing and sent shivers up the spine and it was great to see how much sheer joy you got from driving this car. This channel is the only one I follow regularly on any topic. Such good quality and honest useful content whilst your passion really shows. Keep up the great work. I can only imagine the number of followers keep increasing.
Thanks Simon 🙏🏻
And yet again another great vid
Thanks Mike 👍
Am about to buy one, I love the sound and look are awesome !
You lucky thing 👍
This car tick's all the right box's for me, Great review👌👍🙂, RWD, manual, exhaust sound, big engine in a small car😯, all weather driving. I'm keen to see the other car's mentioned in the video🙏.
I am keen to drive them 😜😂
This is one of the most beautiful car. I only wish I can own one.
AC Cobra, my father in laws dream car. He had one for the weekend for his 70th some years ago now. I did have a short ride in and loved it. I can only imagine how good this one must be.. Awesome. You are a very lucky chap Pete. Well done mate.
I am indeed 🙏🏻
DAYUM! Black on black... she's a bad mama jama! RIP and Godspeed to the man himself, Carroll Shelby.
Stupendous! Friend of mine assembles some of these cars and I had a drive & photo shoot with their Daytona Coupe demo car. Fantastic!
Can’t wait to drive that one 👍
Thanks for the video - great fun cars. I have a factory built 427 Dax with an LS7 - 3 years on and still don’t tire of it. It is however very much a 2 hour car - longer than that is exhausting…and in Sydney gotta avoid the hot days
That sounds awesome 👌
Is excitement reminds me of every time I get on my 2022 triumph rocket
Yes Sir !!
My all time favourite car. Fell in love with the style the first time I saw it, when it first came out, back 1963.
The more I see one, the better I like it.
My next favourite is the Shelby Daytona Coupe.
Wow.
Thanks for posting this.
That’s next 👍
@@PetrolPed oh…. Wow !!
The 2 most etherically monster power machines…and their power still eclipses most super cars of this era 60 years later.
A major nod to Carrol Shelby.
I don’t think the he knew his brainchild’s would have such a big and historic impact on the automotive industry a half century plus later.
Awesome.
Hi Ped
WOW👏👏👏What a wonderful soundtrack.Always loved the Cobra and still do. My one enduring memory in connection with this car was marshalling at Silverstone Classic a few years ago. My brief was or organise a collection of Cobras prior to them going out on a parade round the circuit. The lead car was driven by Jack Sears, and I had the honour and pleasure talking to him for for 15-20 minutes. At the allotted time I gave the signal “Gentlemen Start Your Engines”. Some 40 plus Cobras went past me two abreast each side of me. I will always remember that sound🥰
Blimey. Has you hearing recovered yet 😂
Many things make the AC Cobra special but I have to agree , the sound is right up there with the pleasure of driving one , I love mine .
Oh yes 🙌
Sounds Awesome 👌
WOW 😱👍 what an absolutely stunning sound track
So glad I managed to capture it OK 👍
@@PetrolPed oh you did a fantastic job , i think we were right there with you 🙂 It was clear that you enjoyed it 👍 keep up the great work Ped.
Amazing car they've done a great job!!1
My all time favourite car ! There was one at the Silverstone classic racing last Friday in unpainted aluminium, sounded incredible ! Despite the heavy rain it was being driven like it was stolen and must have been a real handful. This Superformance version looks and sounds awesome, great video !
I know that car. It races at Revival and Members Meeting at Goodwood. Sounds absolutely epic 👌👍
@@PetrolPed Race number was 24, it had a black hard top..... had a really good look around it in the pits. If there were any sound restrictions in place that day the car wasn’t listening.... as you say, the noise it made really was epic ! Loving the channel, keep up the great content !
Probably my favourite classic car but would have to have different colour and some chrome , useable and reliable with modern drive train, thanks Ped you've made my day great video.👍
They had a lovely MkII that was that kind of spec and probably the one I would take home 👌
Lovely, lovely car. That noise 😎
Oh yeah 🥰
What a car and a great video! Fantastic car and what a noise!! I need to buy a lottery ticket!
You’re not the only one 😂
Brilliant car. Oliver just comes across as a really top bloke too. Need him more on your channel.
He is a lovely guy and will defo be on the channel again 👍
Thank you Dale. We have a few more cars on order so when done, Petrol Ped will be over for a drive :)
Amazing!! Sounded so much better through my headphones rather than the Macbook! lol
I’m just pleased I managed to capture it 👍
Stunning Sound
Indeed 👍
*AWESOME SOUND.* LOVE THE COLOR
Hi Peter, What a car to enjoy on a hot sunny day and that throbbing sound it's just perfect. I would love to spec one up if I had the cash . Great Video Peter.
Thanks Alan. I am now saving up 😂
Love the car but it would HAVE to be the 427, “Ford Racing” engine for me, much closer to the originals, the “Coyote” is just too modern!
Yep, the 427 has a totally different growl, just like the original.
I love and raced FE s but that new motor just pulls for ever and forever is a long time
@@cooperparts You're killing me! Trying to decide on a 427 or the coyote. Based on your experience, which is faster 0-60?? Thinking of stroking out a 427 to about 700H.P. Would love to get your thoughts.
427 fe stroked with 428 crank 454 cid great but 427 Windsor the one I had in my cobra better because it is lighter the coyote winds higher that is what I want in my gt40 anyone of them would be great make sure it has 500 hp that is the key to value dyno proven 500 hp cars lot more value superformance is the best the # is on the hood hinge backdraft 2 nd no other one compares
@@cooperparts Interesting! I currently have a windsor stroked out to 500+ at the rear. Recently went from an 850 holley to 750. Seems to have lost a little of it's ummpff, but maybe it's just me. I'm thinking my expectations of a 427 big block are too high. Thanks for the info.!
Shelby Cobra is so awesome, I wish I could let my father have a drive for his birthday, That would be the best present for his age
This Is twice in a week that I've had to say, you lucky, lucky Boy. 1st the GT40 now this. WoW
Very lucky 🙏🏻
Recently got to have a dream passenger ride in a cobra replica with the 427 engine and you need to hear it/try it. The thing goes like hell and the sound on idle, slight rev, downshift, hell even upshift, it is truly the most raw and incredible sounding car I've ever heard.
Nice 👌
Epic with bells on….!!!
Oh yeah 👍
This video was so enjoyable. Now I have to figure out how to get that sound out of my MX5!
Can a Coyote V8 fit in an MX5 🤔😜😂
Trade it in for a SLK55?
Ohhhh
Slightly jealous!!! (again)
Great sounding beast of a car and I kinda like the 'blacked out' look. I'd have the blue with the white stripes over the top though.
Well done!!!
It needs stripes 👍
Just watched this for the first time it made the hair stand up on the back my neck must be watched wearing headphones 😁
Stunning.
Nothing like a V8! Driving refinement perfection in Any V8!
“Batman’s daily” lovin that and the car!
Amazing! And Oliver seems like a lovely man.
He’s a top bloke 👍
Thank you 😊
Liked, now time to watch the video!
LOL 😂 👏👏👏
Definitely get her done! 🤘
Having built three Cobra Replicas I can confirm that they are indeed addictive and the best fun to be had on four wheels. Apart from in the rain. For the best sound you also need underslung exhausts not sidepipes.
Really ? Interesting 👍
@@PetrolPed Straight pipes down from manifolds, balance pipe just after gearbox, with very small silencers just before pipes exit under rear wings. Almost silent when tickling along, starts making the lovely warbly V8 sounds from 2000 revs, and really howls when opened up. Dropping a gear or two and mashing the throttle in tunnels is just sublime. Thats using modern V8's like BMW or Lexus. The Coyote engine would be similar.
I drove a Dax Cobra down to the south of France in one hit and I can tell you that with sidepipes you get the sound bouncing back off the armco so much it will drive you crazy! Not only that, but because you mainly hear one side of the engine, it never sounds like it's running right......
Ahh, no. MUCH better sound and louder with the side pipes. No brainer.
What a fantastic sound.
Oh yes 🙌
Got to drive a Dax cobra when I was 18 that my uncle built. His friend had a GT40 replica that he built in his front room and had to install patio sliding doors to get it once built.
Love that 👍
I bet he had to really twist your arm!!! 😁😁🏁I'm glad you were there petrol ped, I bet nobody watching this video would like to be a test driver for this car! It's a dirty job but someone has to do it! 😁Keep up the great work! I especially enjoyed the classic monte carlo mini video as I'm a mini fan, also a cortina mk1 fan, so if you get the chance. 👍👍🏁🏁🚗🚗🇬🇧🇬🇧
